Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for Positive User Reviews

FabulousBrowsable score that plays along with a professional orchestra that’s at your beck and call. Multiple recordings. What’s not to love?.Version: 2.0.12

ExcellentWould be 5 stars except for one irritating flaw - no matter what I do the 'Insight' videos can't seem to be expanded to fill the screen. The video of Bernstein conducting the 9th does fill the screen so I don't know why the other ones don't. But apart from that it is a great app. Four versions of the 9th plus commentary and history for £9.99 is actually good value. The ability to follow the score is great, especially for choral singers learning the piece..Version: 1.0.2

Absolutely superb, but not for everyoneIf you aren't a real classical music lover, you won't appreciate this app. If you're a professional classical artist, you won't need it. For anyone who fits neither description, it's perfect! And well worth 14 bucks, the real cost of the app..Version: 1.0.0

Love itHave been using this app with delight for several years and still love the Bernstein video, changing from one conductor to the next mid-recording, libretto, guide and background options..Version: 2.0.12

Beethovens 9thHow exciting to see all aspects of the music. So wonderful for both experienced and buddng musicians. A delight!.Version: 2.0.12

A bit more hopeI think The Furtwangler’s great addition can be included in your app..Version: 2.0.8

AmazingThis really does add to the enjoyment of the 9th, superb.....Version: 1.0.3

Excellent - be sure to read app info before downloadingThis is a great app that gives you 4 classic recordings of Beethoven's 9th as well as commentary/backstory. It's great to not only hear the music but watch the score as it moves along as well, and as with other touch press music apps, the 'digital orchestra' feature is cool too (the app shows a diagram of the orchestra and each instrument section and as the music plays it indicates instruments that are playing at that time - its a unique way to see how a piece of music moves around the orchestra and how different sections counter/support each other in a piece).Version: 1.0.0

Best app I’ve ever purchasedMy first app review ever. Absolutely love this app. My favorite symphony comes to life in ways in ways I would not have thought of. I’m completely satisfied and I don’t usually say that about anything..Version: 2.0.9

Re-learning musicThis app is awesome! The interaction makes learning much easier than just reading a book and the real time score playback makes score analysis a dream come true. I sure hope Touch Press will release all major classical works in this format. And although £9.99 is easily justified by the amount and quality of the content, I hope the price of future releases may be a touch lower. Very much recommended to all music lovers, students, musicians and beginners alike..Version: 1.0.0

Beethoven 9thBest application I have in my iPad!!.Version: 2.0.12

Outstanding!Wish I had discovered this app sooner. Putting four simultaneous versions together and being able to seamlessly switch between them is nothing short of genius. And not just any versions at that! Friscay is my favorite. Karajan’s ‘62 version with the same orchestra is thought by many to be his best, though I prefer his ‘77 version. Bernstein’s ‘79 video shows his heartfelt emotions better than any other. Finally, Gardner’s version with smaller forces and faster speeds is, to me, a wonderful counterpoint to the more traditional versions preceding it. I know I will spend many hours exploring this fine app. Many thanks, R. Scharf.Version: 2.0.11

Classical Auditory JoyThis has to be my favorite app by a long shot. What a joy to be able to be a fly on the wall, as it were, to listen to such a wide variety of musical giants interpolate and pull apart and explain and guide the listener through this most wonderful music. To be able to compare and listen for the intricate differences between conductors expression and to now be able to listen to this music with much deeper and fuller understanding. What a privilege to have been exposed to this rich education and to come back to it again and again. Worth every cent. The app works beautifully and allows you to switch around and come at the music from so many different directions. Thank you to the creators of this app for bringing me such joy for deepening my experience of my favorite music..Version: 1.0.3

Hours of endless fun trying to download updates. The app is quite good but huge in size. Will probably take up more storage than all your other apps put together. The app downloaded without trouble but updates are a real problem. I've been trying to download the current release for 8 days now, without success..Version: 2.0.3

Superb app for a brilliant masterpieceOf course, the app's content and the masterpiece within it is absolutely beautiful. On the app itself, it's amazing. This type of source is what separates apps from books, lectures, or CDs. It reminds me of how well the National Geographic app works interactively compared to just reading the magazine. You you sample it, you'll know what I'm talking about. The next step up would be like a virtual reality experience or something. Wish there were a lot more of these supporting other works, but then I'd be dead broke since it is a tad pricey. Great job, otherwise. I recommend this for all classical music enthusiasts..Version: 1.1.1

GreatI love it! Thank you.Version: 2.0.5

This is how technology should be usedWonderfully thought through presentation and analysis... more please of other works.Version: 2.0.12

Blown awayWow. This is the most effective music teaching tool I have ever seen. It combines and synchronises: * 4 real performance recordings in parallel * 3 views of real time score, including auto-condensing mode * music theory descriptions that follow the music * responsive colour coded navigation strip * colour coded visual scheme of seating arrangement making for a very detailed, real-time, visual representation of the work. The “engine” behind this app opens up amazing possibilities for music analysis and general education. I can’t imagine the amount of work that went into this app, yet there is also further untapped potential. Applause..Version: 2.0.11

Good butThere's just not much to it as a casual user. Otherwise it looks great and is user friendly..Version: 2.0.2

Worth every cent many times overOne of my favorite apps. I am not a musician but have played a number of instruments in my life and as much as I have struggled reading music in order to play it, I love to follow the score while listening to the 9th. It is a lot of fun. It is also wonderful to compare and contrast the different versions. Also, the beat map is a lot of fun..Version: 2.0.0

Good app - sloppy designVery good when just viewed on the iPad, but even after buying the 'full' experience, when streaming the video version of the Bernstein performance over Apple TV you can either stream the video or the music but not both at the same time! You can use mirroring to get sound and audio but this isn't the same as being able to stream full sized video. Pity because this distracts from the experience of a fascinating app..Version: 1.2.1

Worth every pennyAnother fantastic, aesthetically stunning, intellectually stimulating, brilliantly entertaining app from Touch Press. Sophisticated from start to finish, not lacking in any area of the app, and a very pleasing experience. Excellent..Version: 1.0.0

A Spectacular AchievementThis is a fabulous gift for the music lover. It is no ordinary recording of the Beethoven's Ninth: it is an education worthy of a busy semester in a top-flight music school. If you are a pretty advance music listener, and you would enjoy developing better understandings of one of the great masterpieces of music do yourself a favor and get this. This would not have been easy to do without the iPad: it gives you four of the great recordings at once and people like Sir Elliot Gardner helps you to understand the music better, great Leonard Bernstein explains the philosophy behind Beethoven's music ... and it you have Karajan's recording, too. Oh the price? Considering the amount of work went into making this music seminar, it is worth 20 times more. It will I crease the value of your iPad. A music lover.Version: 1.0.0

Stunning - wish there were more pieces done like this!Extremely enjoyable way to experience one of the best pieces ever written. I upgraded quickly to the full with no regrets. My four year old loves learning the different instruments in the Bernstein video. Only wish they had videos for each of the four recordings and more pieces done just the same way. A real win for any classical music lover!.Version: 1.0.0

GreatI've never been that into Beethoven, but after unlocking the full app it's great the level of knowledge and insight you can get on this single app. The ability to just hop from one performance to another really gets you to appreciate the differences and uniqueness of different performances. The reason for a the 4 star, if I go off to do something else on my iPad it shuts down, where with such good performances it would be great if the music just kept on playing with the app working in the background.Version: 1.0.0

Brilliant! This is amazing value: 4 great recordings plus two types of score and a facsimile of the original score that was used for the World premiere of the piece. I love the video recordings and found the essays really interesting too. Could we have some more please: Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’ would be amazing if treated under this kind of microscope. Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the end if time’ or Bach’s ‘Brandenburg Concertos’ also come to mind. The interplay between the soloists and the concertante would really come out in an app like this. Well done guys!.Version: 2.0.11

Astonishing valueThis app is outrageous! Four full recordings of Beethoven's 9th symphony, the score, the original manuscript and a whole book and a whole load of other features. Music has never been so engaging..Version: 1.0.0

ExtraordinaryOnly exceptionally do I write reviews of apps. This application is a music lover's dream. It provides for four different interpretations of the same musical score, it allows you to read the score and the libretto and it permits you to jump from one interpretation to another to compare them in real time. Great. I have seen that some users complain about the cost of the app. Having the four versions of the same musical piece for 13 dollars is not expensive. And in addition you get the video of Karajan's conducting. A bargain! Two suggestions: What about Bach's St Mathews Passion? Would it be possible to select variable music sections (from bar a to bar b) and play the different versions in sequence?.Version: 1.0.0

MasterfulAs a classical music listener and amateur pianist, there is one thing I love above all else: reading the score as the music plays. This app, like The Orchestra app, takes that experience to a higher plane. The video commentaries are insightful and polished. And the text is worth reading, especially given the embedded music clips that amplify key ideas. Five stars because it is the benchmark by which all other music apps will and should be measured. Meticulous, engaging, and with four recordings of Beethoven's 9th, only one of which I have, this was worth five times what it cost. Touchpress, keep these coming..Version: 1.0.0

Wow.I first became a fan of the nineth 40 years ago. First time to actually understand it on an intimate level. Just wow..Version: 2.0.12

Great app celebrating a great piece of musicMakes Beethoven’s 9th accessible to even the most unmusical person. Multiple performances, videos, interviews, a curated score, a commentary… wonderful for following those subtle technical details that go into a full orchestral performance, or just lying back and enjoying one of the world’s great pieces of music..Version: 1.1.1

Absolutely mesmerizingPerfect, from the sound quality, to the captivating Bernstein footage, to the comments and commentary ... This is fun, optimism, breathtaking beauty, sheer excitement, and heartfelt emotion, all wrapped up in the perfect app experience. This one is worth every penny. Please give us symphonies 1 through 8 next, I'd but them all in an instant..Version: 1.0.0

The best gets better.Top notch, love it..Version: 2.0.10

A great listening and learning experienceI have used this app for years and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony while watching the score scroll by. What a fabulous way to observe Beethoven’s orchestration techniques while you listen to his inimitable style. As long as I’ve listened to Beethoven, 59 years at this writing, I have never ceased being amazed at his synthesis and invention. It is all simply too marvelous to overstate. I’d love to find other apps like this for similar works..Version: 2.0.12

Well worth the costI am a passionate about Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. This iPad app came out a couple of years ago, but the price (about $15 as I recall) was too much for something unknown. I checked it out yesterday and they'd dropped the price significantly - to $5 - so I bought it. I'm glad I did; there is a ton of information about the work, an English translation of the libretto, and four different performed versions by different conductors. You can hear the differences a conductor makes, and in real-time watch the score. And a lot of commentary, some historical, but mainly on its interpretation and variation in performance. Wonderful stuff. This is the kind of iPad content that makes learning engaging. I highly recommend it..Version: 2.0.2

Very enjoyable experienceThis is a great app for anybody interested in better understanding this piece of music. Being able to listen to the performances while seeing the corresponding information being dynamically displayed on the screen is a very enjoyable experience. Yes, the app is a little more expensive than the average app on the App Store but, in my opinion, the app is well worth its price..Version: 1.1.1

One of my favorite apps!I absolutely love this app! Very inspiring!.Version: 2.0.9

SuperbI have had this app for a couple of years now. I played it for hours non-stop when I first got it. The whole thing, how it is programmed and arranged just fascinates me. The freshness has not disappeared though I don't listen to it as frequent as I had. Best value for the money. But again, who can really place value on a master piece like this, just simply well done. I wish Touchpress will create more pieces like this..Version: 2.0.1

Magnificent! Sublime! A great great app. This lovely app, contains four perfect interpretations of that towering work of art that is the ninth symphony of Ludwig Von Beethoven. That would be worth twice the price but included are scores, notes, phrase by phrase comments that take you through the music like your sitting with a major conductor. What a privilege to climb into these great minds. Bravo, brava, bravissimo.Version: 2.0.5

GénialTout simplement génial, a quand d'autres pièces. Un peu cher et a besoin d' un peu d'ajustement sur le suivi "karaoke style" qui n'est pas toujours sur les bonnes notes mais l'idée est génial..Version: 1.0.0

Thank goodnessThank you for your help and I hope you have a wonderful day today..Version: 2.0.12

AstonishingThis is perfect. Synchronised scores, four performances (one with video), commentaries, video interviews with performers and critics, even a facsimile of Beethoven’s original score! Please develop more!.Version: 2.0.12

Awesome. The best ipad app I've come across.Brilliant..Version: 1.0.0

Excellent in Every wayThis just happens to be my favourite pice of music of all time. Better than any other piece of music either classical, or modern so what a gift this aap is. Four renderings of the piece with full sheet music, commentary as you watch and expert opinion complete with a potted history of the great man himself. if you have a yearning to understand musical structure in the slightest, then this app is a must. Would i prefer to pay less than a tenner for it? yes of course, but that is not to say it is not worth every penny. When can we get a similar app on the magnificent 5th? or the 6th? dam it, lets get all the 9 symphonies in on the Act! I'm up for it are yo?.Version: 1.0.0

Amazing!I just got this app and am dazzled by it. (I do not experience any jerkiness --it runs very smoothly for me.) What a delight! Four orchestral versions, and you can switch instantly from one to another without interrupting the music. You can watch the live players, or a diagram if the orchestra lighting up as each instrument plays. Two levels of commentary-one streaming along the edge as the song progresses, explaining things to listen for in simple, yet precise and illuminating terms for the average listener; and a second longer explanation of the piece is also available. You can follow along with the score for any and/or all instruments, and you can follow the ORIGINAL handwriiten score as well. There are a number of commentators, and other resources with info on Beethoven's life and career, and how the 9th came into being. Everything is gorgeous. $13? It's a steal for what you get when you get the full version. Hats off to this great app!.Version: 1.0.0

Brilliant - please can we have some more?I have only used the app on the iPad, and on this device it is brilliant. It has taken my enjoyment and understanding of Beethoven’s 9th to a new level. The technology works beautifully - both the real-time score and the commentary - and the recordings sound great. Please can we have the other symphonies, and maybe the piano sonatas… and then perhaps some Mahler?.Version: 1.2.1

A work of art worthy of the 9th SymphonyThis is an amazing app. For a $14 in app purchase, you get 4 complete recordings of the symphony, as well as a video of one, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. That alone, generally speaking, isn't a bad bargain, if you look at comparable prices for the 9th on iTunes. But, of course, this app doesn't stop there. You see not only the entire score, shown exactly in time with the music, but also several fascinating visualizations and commentary that help your understanding of the piece. And to top it all off, video and written commentary about the piece is included just for good measure. Pay no attention to the ignorant or disrespectful naysayers here, download the app and try it yourself. This is hours of content, combined beautifully and packaged together in a comprehensive and interactive bundle that will leave you enriched and encouraged..Version: 1.2.0

Pure JOY!!!Thank you.Version: 2.0.12

App for a lover of the 9thIf you love LvB's 9th this is a must have. The four recordings of the 9th are legendary. The fact you have the score and can see what is being played helps with the more quieter instruments. The teaser app gives you a chance to test drive it before you buy the full experience. A little pricey but you have four records, a video of the 9th, and a lot more. Would love to see this applied to other works in the future..Version: 1.0.0

So great!!!!!I love this app! It gives me all of Beethoven 9! I’ve been thinking of duplicating myself into a full symphony orchestra and performing this outdoors! 😀.Version: 2.0.12

Excellent but not for everyoneThis app is a must for only Classical and Beethoven lovers !!!.Version: 1.0.0

There should be more like this!If you love music and seeing the orchestra play this app is amazing! Different options and some very interesting interviews also available in the the full edition! Definitely recommend it to music lovers!.Version: 1.1.1

The best Classical experience on iPadThis by far is the best Classical music app I brought for iOS, I can only dream one day Mozart's Requiem, Mahler's Symphonies or even Wagner's complete Ring cycle will be presented in the same way!.Version: 1.0.0

Possibly the best app on iPad I have ever usedThis is the Mercedes Benz of iPad apps. A beautifully constructed app by Deutsche Grammophon that truly utilises the power of synchronisation and screen layout to augment and enhance one’s understanding of the music. Very well designed app that has intuitive controls and great content. I rarely buy apps, but this purchase was well worth it..Version: 2.0.12

PerfectThere is nothing else to say..Version: 2.0.12

About language. How should I change the display language to Chinese? Thank you!.Version: 2.0.3

Bs 9thEnjoyed put me asleep never slept better. Do you have more choices?.Version: 2.0.10

WowThis app is perfection in the essence of the creation of its content it carries. It reinvented my love for music and even challenged me to furthermore expand my capabilities I have stubbornly obtained through the 20 years of my music making lifestyle. It was not boring at all and it didn't have that irritating backround hue I went through the app completely refreshed with knowledge of my love for music. NUFF SAID'. Th1ng Kh1ng Dav1d.Version: 1.1.1

This is just a fantastic app, even without the in-app purchaseThis is just a fantastic app, even without the in-app purchase I stil have Deutsche Grammophon’s wonderful records - yes i said records and grabbed this app as soon as i saw it and i was not disappointed. The app offers four performances of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and you can switch between these as you listen with just a single tap. A Graphic showing the groups of instruments in the orchestra, that’s synchronized to all the performances complete with a real-time note-by-note commentary, With score and insight sections and a video among the other features of this great app. This is how an interactive app should be made.Version: 1.0.0

Well DoneAs an ex Music major, I found this a rare treat. Love the ability to compare performances, listening through my sound system. I already have several recordings of this work, but being able to compare the interpretations phrase by phrase is simply amazing. While $14 bucks isn't cheap by iOS Apps - compared to what I paid per college lecture it's a drop in the bucket. Just which they'd do the same for Bach - with an emphasis on harmony..Version: 1.1.1

A stunning idea perfectly realizedI bought the full version of this app a few days ago, and I’m so happy I did. I can’t recall the last time five dollars gave me so much enjoyment. This is brilliantly designed and executed; it’s a great thrill and very highly recommended. And it supports background play (I’m listening to it now, as I compose this). I thank everyone who contributed to making this little miracle..Version: 2.0.11

Joy of Beethoven’s creative journey through the 9thWonderful insight accompany the phrases through each movement. Learning so much!.Version: 2.0.12

ReviewSo beautiful l, it will be lovely to have more music with the score at the same time. Please developers will you include more music in your app?.Version: 2.0.10

A dream come true. Not often I encounter something so carefully and lovingly conceived and executed. Bravo!.Version: 2.0.12

Stunning!Fantastic app, well worth the tenner for the full version. The attention to detail is excellent, to be able to switch between versions on the fly is great. Also the interviews are really interesting. More of these please..Version: 1.0.0

Totally amazingThis app is totally amazing, showing the full multi-media potential for iPad apps. And when you consider that you get the equivalent of nearly 4 CDs of music, its a bargain. This will provide many, many hours of enjoyment and worthwhile study, listening, reading the explanations, watching the visualizations of the orchestra players currently playing, seeing the sheet music in real time, etc..Version: 1.1.1

Great AppThis app is fantastic! The various version, videos and overall product are dry well put together. I ensure that every time I upgrade my phone and pad I add a copy of this app..Version: 2.0.12

Finally, a Great Music AppMost app developers seems stuck in the quick & cheap mindset, so I was genuinely thrilled to find this, the fullest demonstration of the iPad App's potential I've come across so far. Obviously, this one's only for classical music buffs, and with four different full recordings of the symphony, it's heavy on memory usage. (And yes, it's kind of silly to have to download the full thing just to test drive two minutes.) But assuming you're the sort of person who would want to own more than one recording of any Symphony (I barely qualify here -- prefer chamber music), I can't imagine better value for the money -- presumably DG has decided to use this to promote the concept rather than to make immediate profits on their back catlogue. I'm looking forward to more in this series, and hope musicians in other fields try this form -- recordings by Nick Cave, David Sylvian, and the whole ECM gang would be perfect candidates..Version: 1.0.0

Endless contentFour fantastic recordings, at excellent quality, a video recording, the full score, endless notes and analysis, and hours of interviews - the volume of content in this app is unbelievable! I don't understand the comments about price, the value for money is great. Compare it to the price of just one audio recording!.Version: 1.0.0

Expensive but well produced for the 9th fanThis app features four complete performances of the 9th (audio only) The inclusion of Berstein the Clown is a disappointment, but the other 3 performances are classics. There are four interesting short essays on the piece and its innards, and a few short video interviews of musicians and critics. The performances are curated with different views of the score, including the manuscript, all synchronized!.Version: 1.1.1

Absolutely amazingThe 9th symphony brought to life, this is pure genius!.Version: 1.0.0

Brilliant!!!I bought the paid version and it's truly BRILLIANT!!! You can imagine how much effort the developers put in this app. Definitely worth the price for anyone interested in the 9th symphony. A great experience of learning, listening and understanding. Almost phrase by phrase analysis! Looking forward to more apps like this!! I made in-app purchase so App Store doesn't allow me to write reviews for the paid version....Version: 1.1.1

FantasticPlease make some more just like this. Maybe some Brahms or Sibelius symphonies as well? :-).Version: 1.0.0

Fantastic musical experienceQuite possibly one of my favorite musical apps of all time. Just beautiful. A few other reviews mentioned the "high" cost of enabling the content (whatever.. $14), but to buy these recordings individually, not to mention copies of the score, interviews, and videos would easily push over $100. Loving it so far..Version: 1.0.0

BeethovenThe very definition of genius. Man has no greater achievement..Version: 2.0.12

Best App I've ever bought.Read all the other reviews for previous versions this is the most enjoyable couple of hours you can have on your iPad if you like the 9th. Joyous..Version: 1.1.2

GroundbreakingA truly fantastic app - for the music scholar and amateur alike; this truly allows you to peel below the layers of (almost certainly) the finest symphony ever written. Highly recommended..Version: 2.0.5

Wonderful app for the musically curiousWhen it comes to classical music I'm an interested hack - I regularly go to concerts but I'm not musically trained. As such, I loved this app. Totally understandable for someone like me but scales up to the full orchestral score for someone who actually knows what they're doing. Really enjoyed the vignettes from people presenting different perspectives about the piece. All in all an innovative and engaging way to experience one of the most important pieces of music produced by humanity..Version: 2.0.5
