CycleMaps for Positive User Reviews

Best App for Quiet RoutesI love this app for finding quiet routes in cities. It finds back streets & cycle lanes. It does take me down subways & up steps occasionally but I can forgive it that. I tend to use it to find my way initially & then when I gain confidence I use some of the quiet route & mix in some quicker sections. It’s always good to know an alternative route if the traffic is heavy, or a road is blocked. With this app I have learnt my way around Birmingham down streets I didn’t know existed even though I lived there for decades..Version: 29.2

Favorite Cycling AppI've tried many cycling apps and CycleMaps is my favorite. The routes it generates are much better than the others, the phone navigation screen is uncluttered so easy to follow when mounted on a bike, and the map selection and search function are excellent. I live in the mountains so the Terrain map and the elevation charts are invaluable, and saving the maps for offline use means I can still navigate in remote areas. The Apple Watch app is where CycleMaps really stands out. There are two watch views: a large arrow showing your next turn and a map view that can be zoomed in or out. You can easily send a route from the phone to the watch and rely solely on the watch for navigation (with or without voice instructions) or you can use both the phone and watch apps in tandem. It's worth viewing the tutorial (the Help option) and I would plan on spending a few minutes learning the app before starting your first ride. It's easy to use once you understand the interface..Version: 34.4

Was skeptical, but now pleasedI read reviews before installing most anything, but I also notice the dates of reviews… there was a lot of legit negative stuff for CycleMaps from years back, so I figured I’d give it a shot—I mean, I’ve already tried so many chiit bicycle navigation apps already, what would be one more? WELL!! Let’s just say I ended up so pleased I bought the lifetime family package. As someone who voluntarily lives without a car, this dedicated visually clean app is just what I need. Thank you devs!.Version: 39.1

So goodThis app is really helpful and easy to use.Version: 16

Amazing app!Google maps watch app is gone but through this app I can get the trails or maps from google or Apple maps or both. It is quite amazing for anyone who likes bicycle trails built in to their gps..Version: 24.0

Works great! It’s a great app and the updates have been useful..Version: 40.2

Very good and worth the subscriptionThis is a ‘simple’ app that just does its job - it dispenses with all the nonsense leaderboards, challenges, plans, etc of other apps. Really like the free cycle button. A few refinement like being able to pause the free cycle would be great. The voice navigation has a little bit of annoying habit of telling you that you have gone off the track while you haven’t. But that is probably outside of the apps refinements. The voice navigation is a very good feature but it is a little bit ‘brutal’ in how it kills music or podcasts to make its announcements. Maybe a bit more gentle blending of the voice navigation and whatever is being played? With those refinements (for me) the app would be a five star..Version: 31.0

Best app for cycling routesI downloaded several, trialled and compared them and this is by far the best. Consistently finds safe routes so I feel much more confident getting to unfamiliar places (unlike others which seem to end up on dangerous roads and chaotic junctions). Love the options for quiet and fast routes. Elevation profile shows the hills so you know what to expect. Accurate prediction of time to destination can help tired legs on the last section. Ability to add waypoints and edit routes is helpful to go via or avoid certain areas. Battery drain is much less than other maps. For me, this is an essential whether dotting around London or out in the Kent hills..Version: 31.11

Generally very goodI’ve only just really started using the app and I really like it. Found some great routes that I would have otherwise never known. Suggestion for improvements are to have an option to favour national cycle routes (some routes it suggests go parallel to designated cycle routes), if I deviate from the route suggested I’d like the app to re-route me rather than tell me I’m off the route, and also allow the app to force the phone to auto lock when using it as a map and not following a route..Version: 28.2

Best cycling mapping app availableThis is the best mapping app I have found and I’ve been using it for over 4 years. It is the best app for plotting your own tailored routes, using waypoints that you can be add to the map, so that you can have your own bespoke route. Or you can get the App to pick the best route for you automatically. Either way it’s great. Very easy to then follow the route while you are cycling with a really clear map and direction/turn by turn guidance. Much better than using a Garmin, which are way to complicated and not easy to follow. The developers keep improving it and listen to users feedback too. Great guys who are really interested in making this app the best it can be..Version: 27.1

It’s a grown up sat nav for cyclists.I’ve only used it once with voice directions, but I have to say it’s brilliant, well worth the subscription . I needed to pick a route home through the suburbs, avoiding my usual route that was strewn with glass, and that’s what it did. There was no way I could have done it using written directions without having to stop all the time. Now I’m going to try and go different places using the route planning. Would have been 5 stars but I haven’t managed to save my ride to other fitness apps for analysis. Still it’s all about enjoyment..Version: 29.2

Love the app but need helpReally loving the app for my regular cycles during lockdown. It’s great to be able to plan circular routes using different waypoints you can just add with ease. I just have one issue I could do with some help on. I have recently got a new iPhone but I’m using my old one on my bike. I purchased the subscription on my new phone so that app is ad free but this has not transitioned to the app on my old phone. I’ve tried various combinations of deleting on either device and reinstalling but no change. The version on my old phone has an upgrade option but even if I were to choose that it then tells me I already have a subscription! Yet it presents as the free version. Any advice?.Version: 31.3

Bike trail savvyBeing new to the area, I did not know about extensive trail system. This app helped me rout my ride to work for 20 mile commute. It does take the battery down so much plan to recharge your 5S..Version: 24.0

Incredible app!! But room for improvementThis app is perfect if you’re a cyclist with an Apple Watch. Look no further. Searching for POIs is great — you either scribble or speak. It’s super fast and reliable. The directions are also great. Big arrows for where to turn, and it’s just so nice to be able to glance at your wrist and see what the next step is. The actual navigation also seems to be pretty spot on. A couple times it has taken me a weird way, but it’s mostly great. One thing I’d love to see is increased street name font. The big turn arrows are great, but legibility of the actual street names is tough when you’re moving fast and want to catch it at a quick glance. I’d also love to see ETA. They show you total miles but that’s it. This app is definitely worth it! Excited to see more improvements!.Version: 31.12

Easy to plot routes across the cityEasy to use, and much, much easier to follow than other similar apps. Love that i can save my favourite routes and access them again quickly. Would like to be able to rename the routes - to make them more memorable, but thats a small downside. The new upgrade lets you rename favourites! Yeah! Very responsive team at CycleMaps- making a great app even better..Version: 24.0

Best London cycle route plannerI’ve tried many cycle nav apps and keep coming back to this one. Just paid to remove ads to support these guys. The routes it uses are great and it’s easy to follow when cycling. Love that you can select different maps from cycles lanes to google and Apple. And loads of useful options if you dig through the settings. For me, getting around the cycle routes of London on my (often changing) commutes this app delivers..Version: 27.1

A must for city ridingSad that google maps isn’t on your Apple Watch? Scared when apple maps in walking mode sends you blithely up the wrong way of a one way street? Terrified when apple maps in driving mode sends you into a highway tunnel? Get this. Bicycle mapping. As it should be. On your wrist. On your phone. Very open so you can use the routes in other workout trackers. Super..Version: 28.0

Great routes, clunky UIHave used the app several times to plan long-ish point to point rides around Yorkshire (50-80 miles) and it always comes up with quiet routes that are a pleasure to ride. It finds roads I’ve never used even quite close to home. Where Google Maps is a lottery for cyclists - you often find yourself on fast A Roads or on rough tracks on a road bike - CycleMaps is extremely reliable. I like the fact that you can toggle cycle paths on and off, depending on your choice of bike. Battery usage is reasonable for an app of this type. I’m less keen on the UI which I find quite counterintuitive. Each time I come to use the app I’ve forgotten how to plan routes (ie not just starting from where I am now) and it can take several minutes to figure it out. Not sure why I get so confused, but it suggests that the app could be built better. Google Maps is *much* better at this - indeed any other Navigation app I’ve used. Finally, I’ve noticed that the app occasionally freezes while searching for routes, but I’ve not had this problem while en route. I haven’t yet paid for the ad free version, mainly because of the UI issues, but I would like to support the work the developers are doing, so I will do so now. Keep up the good work!.Version: 27.4

Great App! Only want to see one improvementSince this app costs money to download - I would say the only feature I wish it had was the ability to draw your path or route so we could see what we biked if we perhaps didn’t plan a route..Version: 26.1

Excellent! The interface is simple to use and I love the elevation preview. But the real brilliance of the app is in the routes it finds. I've done 6 rides now and have explored lanes and pathways that I would never have discovered otherwise. Setting up an account enables the ability to save routes, this is excellent for planning future rides. For longer rides I carry a power pack in my front pannier. The app doesn't seem to use too much data to work, which is a big plus. Other all, excellent value. CycleMaps has opened up the landscape around me for exploration..Version: 31.12

Good Melbourne coverageSeems to have good coverage of the bike path network across Melbourne, Australia - including the main yarra, bay and city trails plus on road cycle lanes..Version: 1

Easy to use with great routingI’m a leisure cyclist and sometimes the suggested routes, even on the Quiet route setting, are on so called cycle paths on busy main roads that I loathe cycling on. I would much rather take a longer, more enjoyable route on quieter roads. Would it be possible to add in such a feature, perhaps allowing the user to generate alternative proposed routes before choosing one? Thank you.Version: 39.4

Needs Voice Navigation on Apple WatchHas worked pretty well at finding directions. It needs voice navigation so you don’t have to constantly look at your wrist to get the next turn..Version: 27.3

The perfect Route PlannerI know this app has cyclists in mind but I actually was looking for an app that could allow me to create a route that avoided busy streets since I am using a 50cc scooter to transport around and where I live drivers aren’t aware of motorcyclists so this gives me the piece of mind I am looking for so I can ride my moped through the backroads without getting lost!.Version: 26.1

The best cycling route planner for Apple Watch.Used this for all my commutes in nyc. From Astoria to south slope and Manhattan to Jamaica etc. This app will recommend you the best cycling routes in a snap. Not just that, turn by turn directions and map access on your Apple Watch so you don’t have to take your phone out of your pocket to check directions/map. Simply glance at your watch to know if you’re on the right track. If you are looking for an app that provides turn by turn cycling directions on an Apple Watch look no further.Version: 27.4

DeliversIn the last update the freecycle button disappeared. Can’t find any way to contact the developers other than writing a review. The email address provided in the app is invalid. Thanks so much for reading the above review and for fixing the bug that caused the freecycle button to disappear. I updated the app and it’s all good now..Version: 31.5

A great option, some cool features!I have only used for about 50km of riding, in EU, but it promises to be great. I have often used G***le maps for its offline feature, but that doesn’t allow bike layers in offline mode. This also allows different map options, so it will be fun to try bike routes with Apple and OpenStreet maps. I like the bike computer function, fun to see how fast I go down some large hills and to moderate my pace on rides I don’t want to get all sweaty! The health integration is great, as is the privacy approach! The auto stop/start seems great for tracking to reduce distractions at the more dangerous times (intersections for example). Two critiques so far, when stopping to inspect the map a few times, it seemed to start flipping orientation randomly. This was an intermittent error. Also at one point the map started flashing as if my screen LEDs were in strobe mode, perhaps a bug conflicting with the outdoor brightness function of the phone. Thanks for the single family purchase option, keep up the great work and thanks for this great resource!.Version: 39.6

Unique cycling appEasy to use planner. No other app compares. Shows speed etc when riding the route, just subscribed so looking forward to using the premium features. Comments for developer....In the free version the turn by turn works great unless you miss a waypoint, quite heavy on battery a black background for turn instruction without map would save power!.Version: 31.12

Great appUse this app to find new and interesting routes.Version: 26.1

Why does it zoom out when you're nearly there????!!!!!!Great app, however with a major floor!! I use it for bicycle courier work, and when you're close to a specific address, maybe within a 100 meters or so, it zooms out and says you're there....but your not yet! It also doesn't remind you of the address you're trying to find. It would be great if these things could be fixed!!.Version: 28.1

Good reliable cycle mapsReally good at picking out great cycle routes - avoids canals and other annoying routes that google maps often leads you down. Some issues with routes occasionally; once or twice it has led me down roads that are no longer there or onto A roads that are not cycle friendly. This, however, is rare and I think that this is a really useful cycle routing app - well worth downloading..Version: 24.0

Couple thingsNeed to double check some routes for appropriateness. Map has taken me on busy streets with narrow emergency lanes and no sidewalk. If I have to go a mile out of the way so be it. I’m alive! Second wish the map would adjust to best route if you go off course. Otherwise, Great!.Version: 27.3

Great alone or Apple WatchI have always liked his standalone app to give me good routing, including trails and other routes that cars can’t take. I just got an Apple Watch, and it worked perfectly with my ride. I tried to trick it by going off course, and every time I did it came up with a new route within 10 to 15 seconds..Version: 27.5

Great elevation tool - road cycling problemI used CycleMaps this year to plan a route from Toulouse to the Monts de Lacaune. I was carrying 7 kilos so wanted to avoid multiple serious climbs, as I did two years ago coming from Carcassonne through the Black Mountains. Being able to view the elevation profile is an important development and makes it easy to plan better routes. One serious problem, however. The suggested routes often include terrain only a mountain bike could handle. If the data enables this, it would be a signficant improvement to distinguish between road and MTB routes. On the other hand, having now understood how to include new waypoints then reorganise their sequence, I have discovered a much better road route for the future which provides a slow valley climb between the same start and end points. If the problem of road friendly routes can be sorted, this app will be the best route planner available..Version: 24.0

Pretty good!Half an hour to plot a 200 mile four day route than I’ve ridden six times. Doesn’t know about the Ozaukee County Interurban bike trail..Version: 26.1

Fabulous routesSends us down roads and paths we wouldn’t have found otherwise. Great for avoiding car traffic and traffic lights. Occasionally the off road options are a bit crowded with pedestrian traffic but then it is easy to reroute. Love this app..Version: 40.4

Don’t use it in your pocketI earlier rated the app 2 stars but have changed my opinion. My biggest beef was that the audio directions often were given too late for me to follow. The developers left feedback about not having it in my pocket. So I bought a £10 phone bracket for my bike and the app works really well - I can see in advance of turns and the audio guide gives me prompts in time to navigate easily. It still sometimes tells me I’ve left the preferred route but this doesn’t happen often and is easy to ignore. I’m a much happier customer and cyclist..Version: 31.8

Love this.I used this three times today for the first time. I never once felt in danger, as the app directed me to roads that weren’t too busy. My only feedback: add pins/dots to the map to significantly bike share docking locations. That would be super helpful..Version: 36.1

Showing potentialI like the app, as it seems to offer more flexibility than google maps, but like some other reviewers, I have found the interface confusing at first. Having used the app continuously for the past 6 months, I have noticed substantial improvements. Occasionally it will still try to direct me onto something clearly only suitable for a pedestrian (stairs, very bumpy terrain), but overall it seems to perform better than the competition. I wish there was an option to avoid roads with speed humps....Version: 29.1

Seems ok.Giving it a go..Version: 38.1

Finally a cycling navaid that worksThe fact that it actually works already puts it ahead of any other cycle navigation app I've tried. I ride with my phone in my pocket, relying on voice aids to guide me. This is backed up with having the route on my watch, so I can see the distance to the next node if I need to. It's not perfect, granted, but bug reports and feature requests are responded to with vigour, so anything that is wrong with it doesn't remain that way for very long. Best £9 I've spent this year..Version: 28.0

Finding some magicWe have been using the App to help us explore London. Using the quiet setting has led us through woods, parks, by rivers and canals all while crossing central London. Our last ride took us to the front doors of the Hilton Doubletree Hotel, through the lobby, past reception and out the back doors on to the ferry to Canary Wharf. The view was amazing and the moment felt magical..Version: 40.4

So far, so goodInitial setup went fine. I’ll take my first ride with the app and update with the results..Version: 26.2

Great Cycling AppThe app is easy to use, well-written and stable. Displays while cycling are clear. This app has supported me through the first few months of being a born-again cyclist: the routes it calculates match my preferences of ‘quiet’ very well and I have enjoyed many days out discovering bits of countryside I never knew existed. I switched to the subscription version during my first long ride using it, while sheltering under a tree from a downpour! I particularly like the choice of maps: I change which one I use depending on whether I’m in an urban or rural area and the weather (some are easier to read in bright sunlight). I’m also delighted with the devs response to issues: their support is first-rate! As soon as I finish this review, I’m back to planning a 60 mile route for tomorrow!.Version: 32.10

Great app for cyclingGreat choice for cycling Solid app, no issues, very reliable and easy to use..Version: 26.1

Great appOnly used this a couple times since downloading but has all the relevant features I’d need when cycling in a new area. The only suggestion I’d make, to improve the app, is for the option for the route to automatically redirect when the user makes the wrong turn or goes the wrong direction, particularly on roads when it’s unsafe to stop or turn around. Other than that perfect.Version: 40.2

Work in progress?I love your app because no matter what people say google and others DO NOT understand what it means to have a quite/safe cycle route. I think this app has loads of limitations and there are loads of things you can do to improve it which is why I’m glad you’ve got a paid version and I’ve just paid for the full subscription. I’m pretty sure we don’t get the best when things are free. Looking forward to this🤞.Version: 39.5

Pretty good with a few small changes to make it greatGood: Excellent routes away from main roads. I really care about this to avoid pollution. Apple Watch app that works pretty well. Customer support is extremely responsive. It’s like someone is sitting there just waiting for you to email them! Bad: Not the best UI on the phone, but it works Apple Watch app shows dots instead of lines in the route. Apparently Apple doesn’t allow lines. Dots are far apart making it difficult to see the route clearly ahead in map view. The Apple Watch app is still useful as it tells you when to turn anyway (i.e. you go straight until it taps you and says turn left) but when junctions are complicated the map is needed..Version: 26.1

Sandra and FreddieWow I downloaded this app and just started playing with it - decided to test it from Rutland To Bowness-on-Windermere and when I analysed the route couldn’t believe how far you could go on cycle paths - Freddie my 13 year old and I did the route on mountain bikes and had the most fab 9 day adventure this summer ever - I’ve fallen back in love with this country and as a complete novice to mountain biking am hooked and can’t wait to plan my next adventure 👍.Version: 31.12

Give it a shot...It works as advertised.Version: 27.3

Best cycling app with great potential yetAfter trying multiple apps I feel this app is certainly one of the best if not the best for identifying, designing and planning cycle routes. it does this smoothly and intuitively with a very efficient interface. I believe there is still room to improve the app which would make cycling anywhere a great ease especially for new cyclists with low confidence. The app has the potential to be a revolutionary tool for cycling. The features I would like to see added: 1. Add the option along with quiet and fast routes to select cycle/foot path only routes 2. Add an option to auto generate circle routes and leisure routes based on time/distance possibly with landmark, hospitality etc filters if possible 3. Add the ability to be able to drop a flag by freehand 4. Add the ability to grab and pull routes in a certain direction updating as you do so.Version: 31.8

Cycle the world with this appI love Cycle maps- from navigating on quiet streets around London to route planning and cycling in Spain, Australia,France or Switzerland. The only time it’s been a bit short is lacking some cycle paths in the New Forest. I use it constantly for route planning. Easy to use and great to see the route elevation profile ahead of time..Version: 27.5

Slow down!! Watch for cyclist.Turn by turn directions for all your cycle quests..Version: 31.8

Feedback pleaseI thought I already wrote a really positive review a few years ago but can’t find any trace of this now. There’s some caveats to a full glowing endorsement however and I’d like to outline a few here and hopefully get a response please. Then I could write from a more informed perspective. 1. I can’t find how to reverse a journey anymore. I used to do this easily but I’d forgotten until I saw it mentioned in another review 2. It would be great to have alternative routes offered for journeys. Sometimes I’d prefer to avoid the cycle “superhighways” 3. I’d frequently like to give simple feedback on minor route improvements I see as I go along but it looks like one always has to writ a review of the app to do this - not the most user friendly way to communicate. 4. I’m sure I upgraded from the free version but am not sure. There’s no ads but I can’t seem to find anything in account info. (Perhaps I haven’t looked hard enough?) Also, I’m considering taking out the subscription but can’t find anything actually outlining the Ezra features available - except voice directions which I’m not particularly interested in. Is there something on this available? (Nothing in the AppStore I can find. Lastly, just thank you. It’s a great app I use almost daily as I go to different parts of town for jobs. I have seen so many new routes and parts of London which I never knew existed or where they were, and it’s just very functional as is required..Version: 28.6

Long time and still happyI appreciate when an app doesn’t collect any data It’s important because there’s so many trips and there’s info there. So that makes you beautiful and respectful. I paid for thee no ads subscription and I would pay for whatever premium membership because you’re great. And I like the way that is explained through the trip. Easy and pretty. Thanks!!!.Version: 39.6

Best Bike AppI always recommend this app to everyone I talk about cycling to. When I’ve taken them on routes using the app they can’t believe the route is so much better than their usual commutes. I commute 7 miles through London and hardly ever a use main road. Newbie cyclists have told me they love the app as they feels so safe using their routes than their other maps and it’s so easy to use..Version: 32.3

This is a great bike navigation toolTook my first tour ride 250 miles. Not a single problem with this app. It takes you on less traveled roads and I think it watches elevation changes too, not sure. Then it will put you on a bike trail if it works. Really easy to use as well. I’m 60 not a techy really intuitive..Version: 31.10

Easy to use while ridingI found it easy to navigate and hopeful to cycle us as opposed to just another version of Waze.Version: 31.12

Great App for cycle navigationI really enjoy using this app when I am out on rides. It helps me to stay on path and takes way less battery than using google maps. But more importantly it has much better knowledge of cycle friendly routes than google maps. The only thing I would say is that the advertisement at the bottom of the screen makes it hard to use sometimes. I understand there needs to be ads but it would be nice if they would be positioned slightly better..Version: 31.8

Good appI just have to get used to it. How do you save a route?.Version: 39.3

CycleMaps has opened up London to me in lockdownYou app has been an absolute eye opener for me during lockdown, showing me quieter, more scenic and safer routes than the ones I had unthinkingly been taking over the years. And paying for the upgrade well worth it for the voice over and the rerouting function. I also like the free cycle function which just shows you where you’re going and records your statistics - it shows you all the cycle routes so you can focus on that if you want. And it learns your cycling speed etc so does a pretty accurate calculation of your estimated arrival time. One additional functionality the app doesn’t currently have is the facility to follow a national cycle route - maybe this will come further down the line?.Version: 31.8

Best route planning out there!I wrote the following review back in 2015 before all the improvements were made. And now it’s even better! This is all the navigation you’ll ever need, trust me! I *love* cycle maps and always recommend it to new cyclists. I have a Garmin, but so often return to Cyclemaps because the routes it comes up with are so well chosen. I used them every day (as BikeCam) during the 2012 Olympics, and they successfully guided me through London's busy streets, avoiding the more trafficky roads. I also used the App when on holiday in Mallorca in 2015, and once again the routes were spot on. There are one or two improvements that would make the App even better (auto route following for example) but even without these I'm a big fan!.Version: 28.0

Just what I wantedI’ve been looking for a cycle map app that works more like a car navigation app - with turn by turn instructions and a map that moves as I do. I’ve finally found it with this app (though it can go a bit loopy when you’re waiting at a junction). I paid for the full version as well which changes your route if you take a different road, and also gives voice directions..Version: 31.12

Changed how I rideLoved this app from the moment I downloaded it! I hate riding with my phone attached to my bike, or having to stop to take my phone out of my bag, I only take my Apple Watch now when I ride with my husband, I can call, text, pay for things and get excellent directions with less of a distraction and am able to enjoy riding much more!.Version: 28.0

Liberating my cycle ridesI have gone in adventures and down quite roads which have filled me with awe. It has taken me on 50 mile trips to places I could not have done along motorways and main roads. Fabulous. - thank you. May I make a note to the designers. The royal blue line is not different enough to distinguish from the cycle routes. Could you change the colour of the route to say orange. I am now a life member and cannot recommend it enough. Well done. 🙋🏼‍♀️.Version: 40.6

😀😊great.Version: 28.6

Very good but..For the choice of routes is the best app by far.. but it gives info on where to turn/what to do in complicated crossings far too late if you go just a little bit faster. It would be great if it could tell what street to take a hundred metres before the turn, not two metres before. Also when I’m on long roads it tells me I’ve left the recommended route, even thought I haven’t, so it was a bit confusing at first. Otherwise I love it!.Version: 31.12

Very good app for a cyclist! Its really useful for me..Version: 29.2

Love the app but I’d like to be able to track a routeI love this app, the directions are clear and the fact I can use different maps is just great. I do use another app called Bikemap that tracks your route from the moment of peddling. If this app could do that I would have given it 5 stars. I don’t always have to go somewhere, sometimes just a nice bike ride is great so to be able to track my route and maybe share it with a community would be a good idea..Version: 28.6
