CycleMaps for Negative User Reviews

CrashesDownloaded latest update, now cannot open app, just reverts to my home page. Main culprit is in settings, if you attempt to set the app to google maps the only way you can use it is to delete the app and download again. DO Not select google maps..Version: 13

Seems to avoid cycle routes!Downloaded for Sydney, and amazed at how effectively it seems to AVOID cycle routes! On a map littered with cycle paths and routes, this app will unerringly head straight for the main road. Waste of money.Version: 12.1

Apple watch app very disappointingI was originally very happy that I found an app that allows cycling navigation using the Apple Watch. Except that, unfortunately, it doesn't – and it's due to trivial problems that indicate the developers haven't really road tested their app: 1. Why do you get some random orange dots instead of a line on the watch to show your way – I assume that this for some technical reason but it's not intuitive at all 2. For some unexplainable reason, the developers have chosen each route segment to be one straight segment. So, on the watch, you will always see the route until the next crossing. That's where the last of the "orange dots" is. Then you're left to guess – right, left or straight? No, the app won't automatically show the next segment when you arrive at the crossing, it will only show that a while later. So each time you arrive at a crossing, you try to guess only for – TADANG – the app to tell you 30 seconds later that you went wrong. This app has probably caused the most frustrating cycling experience I have ever had in London. Quite frankly, it's easier to just use Google Maps and look at your phone at every crossing instead of using the Apple Watch app. Luckily I was still able to return my money..Version: 26.1

Not intuitiveThis should be much easier to use. It feels clunky and cheap..Version: 24.0

Cannot sign upAt the sign up screen all I get is a screen to reset password. Says to check my email. Am not receiving an email. How can I sign up?.Version: 41.1

Not easy to figure outI thought I would table to enter a route and see the bike path and hit go for navigation. But I can’t even figure out how to enter a destination. Forget about the more complicated things like modifying destinations or sitting via points Too bad… I really wanted to like this.Version: 27.4

Loss of import facilityI’ve enjoyed the app for several years successfully but in the last couple of months have been unable to import gpx files as the option to “open with Cyclemaps” no longer is listed when trying to either share a file or open it as an email attachment - is this due to using a newer IOS version on the iphone?? (13.2) - as I have often imported files this is seriously limiting issue at the moment.....Version: 29.2

Bought premium, but doesn't work on Apple WatchI bought the subscription, but my Apple watch is still showing the demo and asking me to upgrade! It's not clear how to get customer support either. Tweeted at them, but no response. If it worked I can imagine it being pretty useful though! Update: I did eventually get support via Twitter. I love the routes it selects - really good for cycling. A lot better than Google maps. I do think the user interface could be improved, but it seems like the best product in the market for now..Version: 28.6

I do like this ap but......Does this app know about how UK roundabouts work ? Today I was trying out the app on a really short stint. As I hadn’t used it before I was very wary as although I live in a relatively quiet area near Cardiff, Wales, there are some major link roads that have to be crossed or joined via roundabouts. I got to one such link road this morning and knew that I needed to exit the roundabout via the 3rd exit (essentially turning right). However, the voice and the map said to take the first exit. When I looked later it was because the app was trying to take me down the first exit some way, cross the road presumably on foot and then go back the way I came and straight on (the way I should have gone in the first place.) Today was okay as I am local and know where I am but I dont think I would have the confidence to use the app on adventures to places I dont know as a moments hesitation could lead to potentially life taking outcomes. On a lighter note, the voice used makes me chuckle trying to pronouce Welsh place names ! Diolch, Hywl yn fawr..Version: 31.6

Good with room for improvementUse it a few times a week for commuting. It’s the best option at the moment and with a bit more work could become a must for everyone as pricing is very reasonable and core ideas are great. A few things hold it back 1. Voice navigation stops working at least once a week. The only way to get it back is remove app from watch and reinstall. Annoying when out travelling. 2. As others have said voice instructions can be late. Knowing what is coming next would be super helpful. It announces stay on this road for 400 yards but doesn’t tell you what’s next until you are on the junction. Why not “stay on this road for 400 yards and then left onto that road”. This would increase the safety of the app greatly (so no looking at Watch). 3. Watch and phone give different results. This is quite frustrating as getting results from phone to watch can be slow and there is no indication that something is happening. Despite the issues I will stick with it and hope the improved update the helpful developer has mentioned makes it even better..Version: 31.8

It would be nice if the did what it said it didI don’t understand the strategy of saying this app does something when it just doesn’t. I get you want more downloads for the add impressions, but it’s just a frustrating waste of time..Version: 40.2

UnsafeMain bike path is right outside my door this app used main roads instead. Refund please.Version: 36.1

RubbishSlow, crashes, hard to plot, no navigation, struggles to keep up when riding, bike maps just don't load quick enough. This app needs heaps of work....Version: 20.0

Needs to improve a LOT!Now that Strava has introduced route planning (only currently available online, not within their app), the competition has stepped up the game for everyone else, including Cycle Maps. I've got the paid version because it looked promising and I use routing a lot out on the road and for planning new rides but having tried to use it for a few weeks I've identified some really annoying problems: 1. Once you've built a route, sometimes the app doesn't give you the option to "Ride This" as it does if you load a route from saved routes. I guess that's a bug but the functionality hasn't been thought through as there should be much more control about starting, stopping and pausing routes (a la Strava). 2. The route planning could do with some work. Strava has the benefit of thousands of users so the amount of data Strava can dive into to help build a route along popular bike paths is far better. Cyclemaps does throw up some strange route options but at least tries to stick to established bike paths defined by google. 3. The screen layout, graphics and usability are very 1990's. Thin weedy fonts are used that are very hard to read, graphics and fonts overlap in tacky ways and amazingly, none of the usual iOS layouts/button functionality seems to have been implemented. You do have to press around the screen a bit to select an option as it's only text without any buttons. Perhaps the app is a port from a different OS?.Version: 29.2

Not goodDespite the numerous "improvement" this is still very clunky. Nothing is easy or intuitive. Redraw takes forever even on 4G. The new version still only get one star..Version: 14.1

Doesn’t work without GPSYou shouldn’t need location services to show me a route between two points. I’m capable of typing that in myself. The app does not respect this choice and constantly spams requests for access to location services..Version: 31.12

An okay App ... but ...Unfortunately, there’s no Bluetooth connectivity so unless you have a phone mount on your bike you’re “sol” unless you print out the route on paper and tape it to your handlebar. Additionally, there are roads which are no longer thoroughfares and I’ve ended up having to back track and figure out a reroute I. Order to get to my end destination..Version: 27.4

Still uselessPrompts to turn on location in every screen..Version: 31.10

You have left the routeVery simplistic app. The map was accurate but the voice controls were not. The first ride it didn’t know where I was and it kept telling me to return to route - for 15 miles! The return trip was better but the voice guidance would tell me to turn after I passed the intersection. Many roads were unnamed roads to the app. I had to rely on voice because the map was too small for me to see all the turns. There isn’t a way to enlarge the map without messing the route. I’ll try the apps interface with google maps tomorrow to see if that is better. I wish I could change the app volume or his voice. Hard to hear. I wish there was a way to listen to the voice before I paid for the service. Big regrets so far..Version: 39.5

First time userWas good for directions picked a decent route. I was hoping to have directions spoke to me through headphones is that an option? Also the tracker for time and miles was broken up into 3 workouts none of which look accurate.Version: 27.3

Mobility Scooter UserI use CycleMaps for my mobility scooter journeys and for the most part it has been very useful. One problem though has been curbs, cycles can traverse them but scooters can’t. I had to make a major diversion which doubled my journey time and made me very late for my appointment. A mobility scooter option would be great. Another potential problem is rough or unpaved pathways. So far I have been lucky but I am now wary and check out on google before taking a chance. Unpaved paths are also weather dependent and can be impassable to mobility scooters in wet weather. Specifying paved and unpaved would be very useful. Being able to create a route without internet access would also be very helpful, especially for creating a return journey. Several times I have needed a reverse route to get home but haven’t had an internet connection at my destination. Finally, it would be nice if the speed used to estimate journey times could be changed. I use both 4mph and 8mph scooters, one for bus journeys and one for others. It would be useful to be able to swap between them according to the one I am using, especially when catching a bus. These features would be worth upgrading to a subscription version..Version: 40.2

Good but would be great with audio promptsI really dig this app. Tried it out after looking for a better route home than the death trap google maps wanted to send me through. I loved how it kept me off the busy roads and took me a safer way. Only thing I wish it had was audio prompts. Hope that’s coming in later updates..Version: 26.1

Stopped working—can’t plan routeUsing for a few weeks though voice navigation keeps repeating I’ve off the path even when I’m on it. This morning the app stopped working: can’t create a route. Notified the site but they continue sending a canned response. Not a particularly useful or feature rich app. I’ve cancelled my subscription and will look for a better cycle map app..Version: 31.8

Annoyingly slowThe only things that load quickly are the annoyingly animated advertisements. The map loading is very slow, and route selection is no better than google maps .. which is nice and quick.Version: 19.1

Nice App. Should be more intuitive.Three stars because this app works better than the usual basic map functions found on the cycling training apps where mapping functions are a second tier after thought. I have several quibbles with the heavy traffic street and route selections in my urban area, but if one is careful with the route planning feature, which is nominally spot on, construction zones, mis-labeled streets and dangerous intersections can easily be avoided. As a retired systems developer, my major beef with this app is the user interface in it’s entirety. I have attempted to use the app as would a normal, semi-technical recreational rider who wants only to set a route from origin to destination, ride the route with several detours and other departures, and then save it to a catalogue for future use and incorporation as part of a larger personal route map overlay. This completely normal expectation should be intuitive from on screen controls and proper on screen prompts and user documentation. I will stick with this app because it is very useful. I am very impressed with the multiple map selection and basic simplicity. Five stars when the onscreen controls, comprehensive user interface and full documentation are completed..Version: 31.5

Where have the routes gone?Downloaded this a couple of weeks back and it instantly showed me tonnes of cycle paths which I was completely unaware of. Now though, with your switch to Gmaps, I don't see a single path marked on the map. You seem to have turned a useful app into an implementation of Google Maps with less functionality....Version: 2

Miserable experienceThis app was giving me wrong directions And was very hard to use. I even payed for the upgrade vision from the start big mistake!.Version: 27.4

Can not figure out how to make routes!!I have a red and green pin on the map and there’s no way to say go. The “create new route” simply clears the pins :o. Also it would be super fantastic if one could say “start from here” or dropped pin and give me a 15 mile or 25 kilometer route..Version: 28.4

Good cycling GPSIt’s good, but, there is room for improvement. The positives... * clear directions, easy to read when cycling & audible instructions. * easy to add a destination. * option to set to fastest or quietest route. * good crossing points for busy roads. The negatives... * Not confident in the quietest routes after being directed through housing estate connecting footpaths which didn’t look like cycle paths. Occasionally being directed to cycle on private roads with no public right of way. * The voice keeps saying ‘you’ve left the recommended route’ when cycling approx 2 feet from the side of the road. * It would be nice if it acted as a cycle computer and stored all the trips (ie accumulated mileage). * sometimes when adding waypoints it got confused and added it to the end of the trip (sometimes it worked okay). * when you stop moving the map spins. I’ve used it for four 40+ mile cycle trips so far, maybe I’ll get more familiar with it addressing some of the issues raised above. In conclusion, I think it’s very useful and wouldn’t want to be without it, but, I don’t completely trust it so I use it to help plan the route and double check on Google Maps..Version: 32.3

Ads get in the way of functionalityOverall a good app, when you can get it to work. I understand the need for ads on the page, but they cover up the icons to start, edit, or view details of the route. Please make the ads smaller or the screen moveable so that users can see and use these options. It could also do with being able to plot waypoints with a pin drop, as sometimes searching a road gives a specific point on the road which re-routes you in a totally illogical way..Version: 31.8

Not use friendlyI downloaded the free version to try. I watched to tutorial. But the features the tutorial indicated were not easily found OR I never was able to use. For instance, it allowed me to put a pin a location but would not let me choose the route. It chose. And it wouldn’t let me factor in like a round trip. After 30+ min of messing with it I thought, meh I’ll just go. Since my phone was on my arm and there are no verbal directions I got off course. It said “off route”. Again I thought, meh, I have pedal tracking on, maybe it will just show me where I went so I can see how far I road. Nope. Once I got home I couldn’t even figure out how to get it to stop. Anyway even this review is taking to long to write all my frustrations. Won’t be purchasing..Version: 27.3

A few nigglesI like the app, particularly since I can use a variety of different map settings, so I bought the premium version. But there are two niggles: 1. The app freezes when I try to download the map to use online and 2. The detail map doesn’t show a breakdown of miles along the route, so I resort to using a different app to get this info (I need to know when to plan my stops). A fix for number 1 would be appreciated..Version: 39.3

UnreliableForget this and save you money. I tried it in our local area, if I followed the suggested route I would be cycling twice as far..Version: 6

Not what I’m afterI’ve had this app for some time and I’m not as impressed as others. I’ve only actually tried to use it twice in almost a year. Both times were short trips to test it. The first time it insisted that I go down a footpath which was totally unsuitable for cycles (it had gates to pass through). The second time was a 2 1/2 mile trip where it suggested I take a route that was 3 miles instead. I tried the option of fastest and quietest but got the same result and they were both similar types of road. I applaud the developers in trying to get this app working as it’s a great idea but I’ve had a 100% fail and have cancelled my subscription. What I was hoping for when I subscribed doesn’t appear possible anyway. I wanted a way to design a route starting and ending at home so that I could plan my exercise without worrying about getting lost..Version: 31.7

Crashes nicely, but doesn’t do anything elseIs this app supposed to just spend 30 seconds at a logo, show a map with an ad banner for 5 seconds and then crash? If so, it does that really well...I just don’t find that useful at all..Version: 28.2

I know it’s free but:Spent a long time trying to find an app that would be my right hand man when out cycling, this app almost pushed all the buttons. Just a couple of tweaks I feel would make it a lot better, voice instructions for one, this would save having to keep looking at the screen especially in wet weather when your protective cover make the screen hard to see, and route reverse so when you just go off on a whim you can get back to your car..Version: 25.2

Generates route okJust down loaded and asked some basic directions calculated an accurate and direct route. I'll reserve judgement for when I get home and really can use it..Version: 4.1

Needs some workIt's nice to have a cycle app that hooks into Maps in iOS 6, but the interface and features are sorely lacking. No overlays of bike lanes, bike friendly streets, or paved off-street bike paths… No way to view alternate routes… No way to have multiple destinations, or calculate routes going past certain points-of-interst (like parks, bike shops, etc). On the interface side, I can appreciate the minimal overlays on the maps, but the info panel just seems like a bunch of buttons thrown on a gray box. Also, on the iPhone4 and iOS 6, I'm not seeing the options for fastest/quietest route types..Version: 7

Bike trails not defaultThis app is meant for cycling. I live in an area with an extensive network of bike trails. I dropped a pin off of a trail in a neighboring city (which is completely reachable by trail only). This app directed me to take a busy avenue. Not worth the money without this feature. I paid for the ad free + Apple Watch bundle. It was not worth the money..Version: 25.7

Brilliantly app with some rough edgesHaving started cycling since lockdown last year and increasing distances, I needed help with navigation. This app does the job well and have upgraded to the subscription option some months ago. Some rough areas: Handover of data to the activity app is glitchy and not all of the data is transferred about half the rides. Planning rides: difficult to see previous routes, and having the ability to edit them would be really helpful as I often “mix and match” routes depending on the time/distance I would like to do. When recording a ride, only the distance covered is visible with the option to stop. Would be helpful to see the route covered on the map and additional data (av speed, calories)..Version: 34.4

Very poor appHave used it twice and both times it has taken me down paths that are not fit for bikes. The path today took me down an off road track that ended in a large fence into a field. Even a runner would have found that hard going. Last time I used, it kept telling me I was off route but unless it wanted me to carry my bike across a field, there was nowhere else for me to go. Would also help if it spoke directions which it doesn’t so you have to keep looking at your phone. Will delete this from my phone as not reliable..Version: 31.5

So disappointingIt’s such a shame that this app is unusable because the idea of a dedicated cycling navigation app is such a great one. I even purchased a special bike phone holder so I could navigate on unfamiliar paths using with it. As far as this app is concerned everything about it is fantastic except for one thing. The map redraw rate is so ridiculously slow that the entire app cannot be used. The only reason I haven’t dumped it is that I live in hope that this problem will be fixed in a future update..Version: 27.5

RidiculousThey do not offer a clue as to how this app is to be used. I still don’t know ANYTHING about this app!.Version: 31.6

No spoken directions over BluetoothIt selected a nice route for me, however on a bright day my iPhone SE screen is hard to read even standing still, never mind in a top tube case while riding. I was expecting spoken turn by turn directions but it remained silent. Additionally due to the London triathlon many routes were closed and instead of redirecting me, it merely displayed “off route” and stopped directions. I switched back to Google maps and got to my destination. Promising but needs work! ========================== So ten months on, a new very London-Specific issue. I need to cross the Thames. You can't ride through the Blackwall Tunnel or the Rotherhithe tunnel, so the app suggests the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. It is true you can take a bike through it, but only by pushing on foot all the way, riding is forbidden. However the Emirates Air Line cable car does permit cycles (albeit it's not free unlike using the foot tunnel), and brings you out next to the O2 on the Greenwich Peninsula. For now the workaround is to do two routes - one to the Royal Docks Emirates Air Terminal, and while in the cable car, plan a second onward route to your destination. Just saying.....Version: 28.6
