✓ Classic Action Adventure GameA classic action adventure from 1991 gets a makeover for the iPhone/iPad. It's great to see such a fantastic and challenging game offered once again to a new legion of players. The reason this game is so good is not because of nostalgia but simply because very few 20 year old games can stand the test of time and still be this great. The only negative I have is that it's a little bit pricey, $3 would have been more appropriate..Version: 1.2

✓ Excellent port of an excellent retro gameThe magic of the original - art, sound, gameplay, and most importantly in this case, atmosphere - is captured here in an excellent port of the original game. The graphics updates are just sufficient to underscore the original art style without destroying its character, while the touch controls fit the iOS platform (in my case, iPhone) really well. The game itself is an atmospheric side-scrolling adventure, with a fluid animation style that was revolutionary at the time and is still respectable these days. It is a strong contributor to the atmospheric character of the game. The game is on the shorter side, coming in at no more than an hour if you do everything perfectly, but that doesn't spoil the entertainment value. Regardless of platform this is still one of my favourite games of all time, and the dev team have done a great job with this port. Now, time for a sequel Eric!.Version: 1.1

✓ Top NotchAn exceptional game which I loved playing 20 years ago. Great updates which actually add to the game, rather than detract from it. It's a bit less frustrating than I remember - though I will admit to being stuck again. I managed to finish the original, so it's just a matter of time. I like the ability to select D-pad mode, as I just wasn't getting the updated controls at all, and that would have been a deal-breaker for me. Controls are responsive, and this game holds up VERY well compared to modern made-for-iPad games... Let alone the Amiga I originally played it on..Version: 1.2

✓ RadicalThe Gameplay, is frighteningly hilarious and the puzzles are equally frustrating; making for an excellent game, in my opinion. A game that you simply can't put down; even though you want to throw your expensive iPad/iPhone/iTouch out of the window, because you can't get past those 'dog monsters'. The graphics are simple, yet refined in this version, but the game play just seduces you. Its fast, yet you move through at your own pace, somewhat of a paradox I know! After hours of play It still forces you (without apology) to continue self inflict this simple concept upon your (by now) fragile mind. The more you sit there nervously dreading what lies around the next corner or cave or darkened claustrophobic tunnel, the more you desire to beat it and not your head against a wall in your living room, next to the picture of a family member. That said, its a winner, with the right amount of 'pull' and 'thought' to keep you fighting for the Professor, with (little, yet) timely 'helping hand' moments from your partner monster. It was great 20 years ago and it continues to do the same today. Get it and see for yourself, if your brave enough, that is! (Ps. I’ve recently upgraded to an iPad Pro, and for some reason all the sound effects now play at a really slow speed (“Anushka” “My-tho-bah” etc, and all the gunshots and FX). Great minimalist art style and strong pacing makes this quite an enthralling, albeit short adventure. The difficulty is brutal. ✓ This game brings back old memoriesI remember getting this game for my birthday. Playing it for 30min and hating it. I had no idea what was going on or what my objective was. The dislikes out powered the likes but something kept luring me back. What a technical achievement this game was for it's time. Remember, we are talking about 1991 and a team of one. Eric Chahi. Yesterday I purchased the iOS port for my iPad and just finished the game. This is so well done that it took me back to my childhood. No crashes, no issues whatsoever. I enjoyed the HD graphics. ✓ Great gameAbsolutely wonderful game from head to toe. This is an older game so don't expect a hold-your-hand, checkpoint-every-3minutes experience. You will lose a bunch of times over the same part but the game is not hard at all. It's just everything has to be timed perfectly or else it's game over. The music and sound effects of the highest quality. There is no talking in the game but you still understand everything that is going on. My only gripe with the game is that it's really short. Less than 2 hours on your first play through (depending on how many times you lose) and once you get good and you know where to go 45 mins max. But it's probably the best 3/4-2 hours available on the iPad. In short you gotta buy this game. *Spoiler Alert* When you interact with the black tentacle things at the beginning of the game holding down and pressing the action button is the quickest way to dispatch them. ✓ A True ClassicI’ve first played this game on an old PC in the early nineties. It was in French and I knew it by it’s original title “Another World”. When it was released in the US, it was called “Out of this World”. This game is an instant classic. I’m was written, coded and developed by one man. The story is simple and short. There’s only about 10 levels. The controls on the phone are a little difficult, but all you have to remember is the four directions, shoot, and jump. This game is one of the best there has ever been. The new difficulty choices add something extra for those already familiar with game and the controls (as with Flashback) work perfectly. ✓ Perfect translation of favourite game from my youthThis game was brilliant and frustrating 20 years ago and it remains so. Graphics and sound are incredibly atmospheric and authentic to the originals but with more pixels. I see people complaining about the controls. I find myself swapping controls between touch and keypad (keypad can be moved from top to bottom of screen btw) in order to tackle various sections. The updated graphics are perfect, they don't take away from the old, they just add texture to what was already there. I remember playing this game using s keyboard when I was a kid, and the controls were fiddly, and frustrating, this version doesn't fix that! It's still as awkward as ever, otherwise it would have 5 stars. This is definitely a game I'd recommend to any sophisticated gamer, or old timer with an iPad. The game itself is atmospheric and beautiful, the gameplay can be frustrating from time to time, as each section of the game is super deadly and you need to work out how to pass it without enjoying a cinematic death! ✓ Another World (aka: Out Of This World)I was thinking about this game the other day, and how much I enjoyed playing it on the SNES system in '91. This game is 'almost' how I remember it - minus some incidental music that appears to be missing, which will hopefully be restored in a subsequent update. The enhanced graphics are stunning on the iPhone's retina display, and it's cool to be able to switch back and forth between the original resolution and the new look. The game is also still challenging to play, and remains frustratingly difficult in places. All in all, a sweet purchase for $4.99..Version: 1.1

My friend also had this on the Sega Megadrive, which contained a totally new level (which we could never get past!) and I've never seen this level again since. ✓ Great Game / Horrible Business32-Bit App Alert, Warns Older Apps May Slow iPhone Getting alerts like crazy. This is not cool. Why did Apple let me buy an app, with no warning, and then flash me a warning while I am running the app, stating that it's bad for my brand new iPhone? Why not just remove it if it's actually slowing down my system? I understand enough about architecture to see how the statement is true, but this just pisses me off. This just leaves me worrying about the health of my devices, and developers and users alike will be angry. I get what Apple is trying to do, but scare tactics will just drive people away from the platform. Die again and step and repeat....it's enough to make you swear like a trooper. Touch controls take some getting use to too. I believe this was the first to tell a story in that minimalist Half Life sort of way. Aside from the trip down memory lane, this is one of the better games you can download for your iPad. I don't believe it's too hard, but it is a nice mix of challenge and pacing. You die often but it's almost part of the game and it doesn't send you way back usually. $4.99 might be a little high for the length of the game relative to others but it's also a better game than many others out there. They have done an amazing job of capturing the magic of the original without overdoing it by being TOO flashy. The new controls work perfectly well!!!! Much better than using a horrible onscreen dpad. Very intuitive once you get the hang of them. Any fan of the original will love this as well as new comers. If you have played the original it won't take you long to complete, I was amazed at how much of this game I remembered, even after 20 years..... I'm showing my age here!!!! ✓ 3G IssuesGreat game as I remember. Two issues worth mentioning. On an old 3G, the hires mode is not worth playing as the game runs very slow. Maybe the devs should have mentioned this. Run it in it's old low res and it looks fine. Secondly, the help screens are bugged. When you scroll the pics left or right, they don't align with the screen properly and you have pics that are half off the screen. Apart from these, a fine release. By the way, Flashback is already out on the app store. The sequel 'Heart of the Alien' can be played by using a Sega CD emulator on a PC with the disc image which is available on the net ;).Version: 1.1

This is a meticulously crafted game, its chief characteristics being a very distinctive & fresh style running through every aspect, and the complete lack of padding: no gimmicks, no diversions, no repeated mechanisms. In literal mechanics, it's a screen-by-screen platformer in the vein of the original Prince of Persia — with individually illustrated set pieces in the pervasive blue-and-brown-hued geometric style — revolving around a fast-paced escape adventure broken up by strategic puzzles and tense tactical gun fights. The overall experience is beautiful, compelling & immersive. The touch-based control mechanism (as opposed to generic D-pad overlay) may be frustrating at first, but eventually comes to feel incredibly intuitive. The graphics revamp is masterful — updating the original to take advantage of hi-res and a broader colour palette without sacrificing the low-range angular style (you can toggle rendering mode back and forth at any point in game). All in all this is a triumph that needs playing, if not for its significance as a landmark in gaming history then as an incredibly well-executed iOS port that handles better than many competent games built specifically for the platform . ✓ Great game, fine in this formatPlayed this game around the time of its first PC release. It is, as others will have said, a gaming classic. The original playthrough was a formative experience, so my feelings of nostalgia alone could give this a positive review. Using iPod touch 4th generation on 4.3.3 firmware the game crashed on first attempt to start from the main menu. Since then, it appears to be stable. The character [Lester] can be controlled using touch or pad controls. Found using touch awkward to start, but after a few tries of the first scene I feel it's reasonably acceptable. That doesn't mean I haven't died many times already. This doesn't really diminish my enjoyment - it didn't prevent me from appreciating the game in the early nineties and I couldn't say it has now. It is an unforgiving game in that respect. This is a great game. If you've experienced it before, you've quite possibly already downloaded it. If not, you'll find an enjoyable, time-killing retro adventure, to say the least..Version: 1.1
