✓ One of the Greatest Games ever created!I remember playing this game way back in 1997 and thought it was simply fantastic. Thankfully it seems quite at home in this new iteration as an iOS port. Even back then I felt that it was truly ahead of its time by literally letting you star in a story told in 'real' time. Hence the action unfolds itself around you as you play! You are immersed in the role of an American playboy set on the famous Orient Express at the brink of World War 1. Highly intelligent story telling and great acting make up the core of this murder mystery game. It's definitely not a game for the impatient player but if you give it a chance it can reward you with one of the most unique and fulfilling experiences ever conceived for the computer game genre. ✓ Works on an M1 iPad Pro iOS 14.5 as of July 2021Really happy to find this classic on the iPad. It play naturally with touch since it’s a point and click adventure from the 90s. It used motion capture to animate people and the game plays in real time you have to move the clock if you make a mistake to go back but sometimes you will have too many wrong decisions and need to restart :). People on the train have their own schedules and so you can witness events based on the time in the game. Hope the developer keeps this working into the future!.Version: 1.12

✓ Too real time?It's looks good and the voices and conversations are brilliant but I'm finding it really hard to navigate and really hard to keep up. The pace lets it down because its the kind of game where you want to absorb everything that is going on and it's near impossible. I've already had several "game over"s and I felt they were all pretty unfair and very frustrating. It is a really charming game and its got so much more to offer then your average game, I just wish i didn't feel so rushed. EDIT: I played through with a walkthrough in the end and really enjoyed it. ✓ Tough, immersive, intriguingI'm only a part of the way through this game and i must say it's tough. It's not like your average adventure game. Everything goes on around you and you have to keep up with it. I'm sure I've missed out some key parts already! With the game just being set on a train it has a very real and almost claustrophobic feel. New subplots emerge and keep you guessing and investigating. Also there isn't just one solution to the game which means i'll be back for more. The look of the game could be somewhat divisive though i feel. Some of the animation is good, other parts are really jerky, but on purpose. I think it would have been nice if it had been given a bit of rendering to make the appearance smoother. It looks a bit dated nowadays. I'm kind of used to it now though and if you can look past that you're in for a treat. I vaguely recall this being released on pc and thinking it looked interesting and I must say I'm very pleased I finally gave this a go. Should keep me busy for a while..Version: 1.02

✓ A hugely entertaining experience, let down by a few flawsI've been meaning to play this game for years, and finally picked up this new iOS release. This is a game full of great ideas. The story plays out over a few days and different events happen at different times - you have to be in the right place at the right time to experience it all. A time travel feature lets you replay portions of time incase you missed something, this is nicely implemented and encourages further playthoughs. There's a decent script, and great voice acting. Having multiple sets of passengers talking at once is often confusing, but it really helps create a more believable world - the other characters don't drop whatever they're doing to talk to you. Visually it's very interesting (though the quality of the character graphics is a little uneven in places). The experience is marred by a few flaws: Touch controls seem inaccurate - I frequently found myself going around in circles because the game decided I'd tapped to go in a different direction than the one I actually wanted. There are some bizarre user interface decisions - for example, when you pick up large objects, they obscure virtually whole screen, making it a pain to see what you're actually doing. The biggest problem is the game's difficulty - I would have found it impossible to play without the built-in hint system (a very useful feature), because some of the puzzles are beyond obscure. It's frustrating to have to keep wandering up and down the carriages looking for what you're supposed to find next, and when you use the hint to discover what you're supposed to be doing, you realise that you'd probably only have stumbled on the answer by pure luck otherwise. Flaws aside, this is a hugely ambitious attempt at a different kind of adventure game, and it mostly pulls it off. A must for adventure fans..Version: 1.02

✓ If Alfred Hitchcock made a video game....It would surely look and sound a lot like this! The Last Express is a socio-political thriller that is character driven and relies on investigation and conversation. It features only a few highly tense action sequences, It is how great adventure games should be. It has been available for a while now in a version compatible with modern computers, but this is the first time it has been released for mobile devices. As for the iOS port, the unique art nouveau visuals are still here, unchanged, as is the phenomenal soundtrack. Unfortunately they've added in an (optional) hint system, this will take away a lot of the fun of having to really think your way through the game. I recommend new players try the game without any hints, at least for the 1sf play through (and trust me, you'll want to do many!).Version: 1.02

I was very pleased to see the Last Express and find it it was of this genre. ✓ A Clockwork FirebirdI am not sure how to do this game justice in a review. How do you adequately praise a work of art? This is the closest thing to time travel I’ve probably ever encountered. If you’ve never wanted to take a train across Europe in the days before WWI, you may not enjoy this game, and that’s fine. But if you ever have thought, “Gee, that would be neat,” this game is the closest you’ll get. Some of the gameplay is challenging, even frustrating. But this is a big, Art Nouveau astronomical clock of a game, with so many moving parts—really as immersive as anything I’ve played. The passengers on the train each have their own stories, and speak their own languages (Russian, French, German, Serbian!). At one point you must have a character translate a golden manuscript of The Firebird into English from Russian. The conversations between the socialist student and the Count’s granddaughter, or between the English girl and her Central European companion, are just exactly right. If you love travel or history, if you love art or character, try this game. If these things do not excite you, enjoy the thousands of other games that are made for people with no appetite for the extraordinary. The world we enter as Robert Cath is complex and rich. It is full of intrigue and phenomenally well-written, well-acted and massively believable characters. Every small detail adds to the immersion; be it a newspaper left lying in the dining car or an overheard conversation in a language that Robert Cath doesn't understand. Each and every time I've played this game I'll overhear a different conversation, piece together a few more character details. The ambience, acting, attention to detail and scripting are top notch, and make the Last Express an enduring game and a must for anyone with a love for immersive thrillers. ✓ Nostalgic...About ten years ago, I remembered seeing this game played on a cousins PC. At the time, I was wowed by it. The then, I left the house and never saw or heard of it again. Until now. At first glance, the game appears to have aged very poorly, and is complex to the point of being overwhelming, but after playing for about 20 minutes, the whole system will start to come together. And than you can get started. How is it? AMAZING. THE WHOLE THING PLAYS OUT IN REAL TIME WITH GOD KNOWS HOW MANY DIFFERENT ENDINGS, AND TWISTS ALONG THE WAY, AND ITS NUTS. Literally every decision you make has weight to it. That's not something you can say about most modern games, putting this in its own league. You've never played anything like this game. ✓ Like no other game I've ever playedIf you enjoy classic adventure stories or simply enjoy an amazing story, then this totally delivers. Allow yourself half an hour initially to get used to the controls and the layout of the train and you will start to love this game. Absolutely absorbing atmosphere in the different carriages and the rotorscoped actors seem totally life like, even though characters are not fully animated. The voice work is very impressive also. ✓ Brilliant, mature, but a bit clunkyThis has always been a fantastic game, and this iOS version is presenting the game in the best shape it's ever been seen. The story is sophisticated and well thought through, the mystery fascinating as it's unravelled. There's really not been many mystery games this sophisticated in the intervening years, it's going to stand out as something brilliantly unique if its your first time with it. And it has a unique rotoscoped visual beauty that you'll appreciate more and more as you progress throughit. Be warned though; this had a brave interface originally, but it was a bit of an evolutionary dead end. ✓ Best graphic adventure everThis was one of the greatest PC/Mac adventure games ever created and won countless "game of the year" awards when it came it --back in 1997. Cool rotoscope graphics, dramatic soundtrack, good voice-over acting, compelling mystery story and interesting characters. Truly an interactive movie where you play a key role in unraveling the story. DotEmu has converted it to run as a native iOS app and it works great. I use the iPad version and have had no problems. Controls are super easy, animation and sound are smooth. Note that this game is much more about the story, characters, clues and timing than about action. For $5 it's a great bargain..Version: 1.03

It is unique because the other characters go about their business whether or not you decide to take action or not. This is different than most adventure games, where only your actions affect the events going on, but in this game, characters move and events unfold in real time, making it all the more immersive.
