Another World - 20th for Negative User Reviews

I WANT MY MONEY BACKThis game, obviously designed for PCs and consoles, is NOT made for mobile devices. It could absolutely be redesigned for a phone or tablet, but isn't. It's clear this game was hard on it's original players, but due to the awful controls on handheld devices it is impossible on all levels of the word. It is a disgrace to the original game an the developers and should be removed from the App Store until it is revised and all purchases should be refunded..Version: 1.4

TediousThis game looked appealing, so I got it. However, after a while, it got VERY tedious and it took more than 100 tries literally on some extremely hard parts. If you don't like tedious games that make you think or take a huge load of trial and error, this game would be a waste of money and time! The controls aren't very intuitive, and the game itself isn't interesting enough to use hours to figure out one section of the puzzle. If you are like me, please don't get this game. I want my money back! :(.Version: 1.4

FrustratingI am still intrigued by the concept of this game, but the default swipe touch screen controls are terrible. They're way bad. I finally switched to the control pad, and that was a little easier, but still, I usually felt like there was a disconnect between what I was trying to make my character do and what he was doing. In a game that basically requires you to die over and over to figure out the right thing to do, this became extremely frustrating. I stuck it out, and I'm glad I did because I never played it on the PC, but I would not recommend this game. Not at full price, anyway..Version: 1.4

Total Rip Off$1 does not equal £1, stop completely ripping off your uk customers. The devs have purposefully increased the prices for uk customers for absolutely no reason. Complete price gouging. I will never buy another game from this dev or publisher..Version: 1.4

Worst port everThat game was nice back in the time… now what we get… an awful port with unresponsive controls… not to forget that the game doesn’t support controller it’s a shame I wasted money on that last time I purchase a game from that company.Version: 1.6

Don't even get to the good stuffWhy pay for this????!!!! You get to the escape and that's it??? Controls are rough, switched back and forth between the two types.... But dang... Where's the rest??.Version: 1.4

I paid for this.I paid real life money for this, hard earned money. Why does it not work with the latest iOS. Why have you not updated this app? Have you stolen my money?.Version: 1.4

Error messages !! Please update !!Developer please update this game we all paid money for!! Every time the game starts there's a big old ugly message " this app may slow down your phone " !! Why can't you just update it, nobody wants their phone slowly down because of your app!! Thank you.Version: 1.4

Nostalgia Is A Powerful ThingRose-tinted memories have led to the unanimously high reviews here. These people are more in love with the time of their life when they played this game than the game itself, and are confusing the two. The controls are both loose and and non-responsive, the art style is vaguely interesting but certainly not the tour de force it's made out to be, and the gameplay is unforgiving and unbalanced, giving you zero indication what to do or what is coming up next. This is an exercise in rote learning, not gameplay. Being too young to remember this game I can say there is nothing for you here if you're coming into this thing fresh, and the price tag (set high to take advantage of 30-somethings) is ridiculous for such an unsatisfying gameplay experience. I'm writing this to warn others that might waste their money like I did..Version: 1.1

Incredibly frustratingI remember how popular this game was when it originally came out back in 1991. The updated graphics are lovely, but unfortunately, the game itself doesn't translate well to the touchscreen medium. The controls are clunky and unresponsive, which makes many parts of the game incredibly frustrating, as fine precision and quick responses are required to get past the challenges. Often, the game gives you no indication on what course of action you should take in order to proceed. I don't expect games to hold my hand, but there's no fun in trial and error. For example, at one point you have to roll through some air ducts, and there's no way to tell which is the right way and which way leads to a long drop and death. You've just got to keep trying over and over, watching the same death animation again and again. That's not fun -- it's frustrating..Version: 1.4

MehClunky, frustrating and very short not worth the $5.49 price tag. Stay away!.Version: 1.1

Terrible controls ruins what could have been a great game!I was so compelled to right this review after beating this game for one simple reason...horrible, poorly designed game mechanics. The story and the artistic style are very good but ultimately the entire experience was ruined for me due to frustration over the controls!.Version: 1.4

20 years on20 years in and I’m still annoyed that you have to go back to the water scene when I die. Please add more save points. Other then that. Great game. Well thought out..Version: 1.5

Don't buy the hypeThe game is a reasonable port, but it isn't really approachable by today's standards. You are left to repeat segments as you keep dying with no hint as to how you should proceed. Yes there is atmosphere, but today's gamers aren't use to finding out how to play the game. I'd say unless you already know you love it, or really watched vids if the gameplay, skip it..Version: 1.2

Nt real goodNo info for controls , can't move or jump or find weapons to fire what's going on.Version: 1.4

Not workingPlease update so that it can be enjoyed on 64bit devices..Version: 1.4

Can't get it to open!Just downloaded this as it had great reviews but can't get it to work!!!! The app starts followed by two logo screens then for a split second it goes to the opening page of the game then it closes and returns to my apps screen. Have tried a restart of the phone but still doesn't work. Please fix or give me my money back..Version: 1.4

Very difficultLovely game, brings back good memories, but I'd forgotten just how hard it was. The controls are ok, but also occasionally let you down at bad moments. The save points are few and far between, so you achieve something really difficult, then accidentally die and have to do it all again! I'm about 30 minutes into the game and the frustration level is almost too much. More save points please! UPDATE: I managed to finish the game, giving in and using a walkthrough. The controls were slightly easier using thumbs on either side of the screen. It is a very frustrating game and you have to do most things in exactly the right order but with a bit of luck and replaying some sections 20 or 30 times, you do get some sense of achievement when you finish the game! :) I would have given 4 or even 5 stars but for the difficulty level..Version: 1.2

Save problemGreat game, took me right back. Few bugs in game, one being it doesn't always save your progress and you have to replay a lot of screens to get back to point of death. Mainly around the cave levels. Please fix.Version: 1.4

Classic game, fiddly controls. If you were a PC-gaming dork in the '90s, you remember this game and probably adore it. It's already seen one cleaned-up/higher-res release on proper computers, and now here it is with touch controls... still pretty, still atmospheric as all get out, and still maddeningly frustrating in places. The muddy speech is a bit jarring on the few occasions that anyone says anything, but the worst surprise is just how mushy the touch controls are; platform/jumping games really do require split-second responses at times, and it's all but impossible to pull them off when you're tapping and swiping at your iPad. Maybe it becomes more natural with practice, but I've just spent twenty minutes repeatedly falling on spikes and having my legs and/or head bitten off, and that gets old after about five; I can just imagine how much I'll want to put my fist through the screen once I reach the crazy back-and-forth gunfights. Some things just work better with physical keyboards, you know?.Version: 1.1

App doesn't will screen on iPad proAmazing game, but app desperately needs updating to fill the screen on iPad pro...Version: 1.5

Horrible touchscreen controls, great translation of classicThe touchscreen controls must be fixed. Update the app with a control fix. The touchscreen controls do not work in any sort of acceptably playable manner. Maybe the devs need to make onscreen buttons not an option but the only choice. I'm not sure. Either that or make the touchscreen controls more obvious and user friendly. There's no reason for the character to turn around half the time, yet it will turn backward wth no warning. BUT if you choose buttons for control, it's pretty close to the original. The look and feel of the app really are true to the original game. The buttons took about a half an hour to get used to them. Once I got used to it, I found that most of the old twists and turns from the game came back to me like riding a bicycle. It was quite a joy to play through the ale again after so many years. Bravo to the team behind the translation to newer formats. Really well done. Just fix those darned touchscreen controls! :P.Version: 1.4

Great look, horrible feel. The rush of nostalgia I had when I learned of this re-release was enough to make me purchase it immediately. Right away I noticed the controls were far less responsive than the already clunky original but I wasn't completely discouraged. It doesn't take too long for things start to get more challenging then you realize more and more that this is definitely "not" how it use to be or should be. Lester even just barely jumps and certainly not on time like the original(which is crucial) Im sure the developers take pride in their excellent visuals and sound design but with a control system this horrible they've managed to make and already tricky game 1000 times more frustrating. PS - I want to break my iPhone in half now..thanks. All in all the the graphic work and ambiance are incredible, but you'll more than likely never get to see it all of it(or your money's worth) by sheer flaw in design..Version: 1.4

MrI now remember why I ejected this disk from the Amiga and threw it in to the garden, all those years ago. I was really hoping they had fixed the original, jittery, poorly responsive controls which send you waaaaaay back every time the poor guy winds up on the spikes. But, no. Just count the amount of times you say, "Damn it, I pressed jump".... It will probably equal to the amount of times you delete and re-install this game..Version: 1.4

Looks good, awful controls...Despite great retro graphics, this game is awful to play - the controls are terrible, it makes it such a frustrating experience..Version: 1.4

NostalgicDefinitely one for the nostalgia buffs. Unfortunately, this game does not compare with contemporary games. It is simply trial and error, filled with confounding, illogical puzzles. Two stars for the atmospheric opening, no stars for gameplay..Version: 1.2

"good deal"5 bucks to play 5 seconds before crashing. Good deal..Version: 1.2

PLEASE FIX BUG @ PalaceThis game is a great redo of an old classic. I appreciate the subtle updates in detail, and the controls aren't terrible when you switch them from the touch controls. However I encountered a bug in the palace level where you take two teleporters down to disable a power source (after killing one guy) to supposedly blow a hole in the floor of the stained glass room (with a staircase, and people are shooting at you). The hole in the floor does not appear, but flashes red with the gunshots..Version: 1.4

Sound is brokenSound is totally messed up. Considering it's such an integral part of the experience it needs fixing asap. No point to play until this is done..Version: 1.4

Missing Original AudioThe amazing original Audio is missing and has been recreated for the version. Shame, as that was a big part of the original experience..Version: 1.6

Loved this game back in the day. Would be good if...It’s an okay game. The only thing I would change is maybe adding a save point after the water scene as it’s bloody irritating having to go that far back and start again, especially with the controls the way they are.Version: 1.5

Good but bad controlsThis is great for those seeking some nostalgic fun but the controls leave a bit to be desired. They just don't translate well for these classic games. It becomes frustrating when you keep missing a jump because the action won't register. Flashback was plagued by the same issue..Version: 1.2

Sound issueSo I recently purchased an iPhone 5s and an iPad air 2 and discovered that this game on both has a sound issue. When I play it on my iPod 4g there is no issue but on the other two devices certain sounds are played slower than they should be, thus making them sound like slow motion. For instance the beast in the beginning, after he chases you to the vine his growl is slowed down and deeply guttural, and then when you are in the cage, the guard starts shooting up and his voice is off, slowed down, as well as what your partner says when he taps you on the shoulder immediately after breaking free. His voice is not the same at all and he doesn’t even finish saying what he’s supposed to say because it’s so slowed down. the laser shots are completely off, especially the super shot. Essentially the sound is really screwed up. I saved version 1.2 and when i play that on my iPod 4g no sound issue, but no matter what version I play now on my iPhone 5s or iPad 2 the sound is completely screwed up. Really love this game and hope to have the issue resolved soon. Other than that it is a great game.Version: 1.5

Stupid Controls!I remember the original with a mixture of fondness and annoyance. Twenty years on, and the fondness has gone. For me the controls in this new version were a disaster. Double taps to run simply made the character do a little jerk. Tapping on an enemy to fire the gun made the character stand up and get shot! The game always was a low frame rate lagfest. You'd think they'd at least fix that, but the same old fashioned graphics and gameplay remain. They were all we had back in the day, but come on! I really don't understand the positive reviews here. I got this for 69p, and it wasn't worth it..Version: 1.4

Another worldI would have loved this game if the controls weren't unusable ..Version: 1.3

They killed matzuba?!The iconic matzuba sound effect of the alien after the cage falla was replaced by some dreadful grunt. For goodness sake devs put the sounds back to how they were..Version: 1.5

Bug in game where your character gets stuckAt the part where your buddy reaches down from the ceiling to rescue you, nothing happens. Have played this game before and bought this version for nostalgia. However, it's broken. I have mailed the developers through their support link but haven't heard anything back. Will update this review if and when they fix this..Version: 1.4

Tedious and aggravatingToo often the player must go through monotonous parts that involve running and jumping--moves that are at the mercy of inadequate, slow controls. If the developers still care to do it, I suggest they push an update that allows the player to save his progress manually, so he can avoid endless repetition of difficult and tedious tasks, such as the escape from the underground canyon. Thank you..Version: 1.4

What happened to Flashback??Really preferred Flashback, I was on the store a long time ago but is no longer available, at least in the uk store.Version: 1.4

ControllPlease, support ps4 dualshock controller.Version: 1.5

Does Not Work with ios 11Can’t play game with latest apple update ios 11 64 bit. Good game but your wasting your money. Shocking behaviour from developer DotEmu. Avoid at all CO$T!.Version: 1.4

Please Update!Another World needs an iOS update pronto! The audio is badly effected and overall it's not working too well. Buddy’s famous “matsuba” quote sounds like crap and the entire sound effects have this awful low pitch tone to it..Version: 1.5

Dreadful controlsWell I’ve just wasted my money and got stressed so overall terrible experience, I’m trying to get past some dangling things while jumping over some other stuff that also kills you, trying to do this with the iPad controls system means you’d need to be an octopus to use all the areas of the iPad correctly and even then I’d still die, poor controls have ruined what looks like a decent game..Version: 1.6

Broken DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY UNTIL FIXEDThis is one of the coolest games in my childhood. Harrowing. Beautifully made. Ahead of its time. But the controls are completely broken and trying to get past certain areas can be basically impossible. Either fix the controls or update it so that the character comes back closer to the point where he dies. It's totally frustrating to see this masterpiece sitting in my iPhone because I KNOW I can't get past some stupid jumpy sections and even if I do and die immediately after I'll go back to the start. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY UNTIL FIXED.Version: 1.4

Terrible controlsI wanted to love this classic, but the controls are sluggish, imprecise and awful. And then you die without any idea what you were supposed to do differently. All you know is you'll have to watch a 10-second non-skippable death cutscene, before you can have 2 seconds of play and die again. You won't even live long enough to figure out how to steer. Not fun..Version: 1.4

This is sloppyThe goods are that it’s the original game, that’s about it. The UI is clunky, no controller support. Terrible touch controls. I could do better than this in 24 hours and I barely know python. I do not recommend this. Go buy a raspberry pi and run it using retropie..Version: 1.6

Horrible!I never played the original so I don't know if this is just a bad port. Lovers of the original have stated that the controls are problematic. And I agree. The game in general is non-intuitive and if it wasn't for the walkthroughs online, I'd never have made it as far as i did. If you opt to use the newer touch controls, be aware that at certain points in the game you have to switch back and there is nothing to alert you of that fact except hours of trial and error frustration. This is one of those games where you need to do everything exactly right or you have to kills yourself to try again. I finally got to the end but was unable to finish due to the non intuitive controls. I'm not exactly sure how the original developers even expected players to figure out certain portions of the game. All in all, the game makes very little sense ..Version: 1.4

Frustrating trial and error platformingI really wanted to say I enjoyed this, but when virtually every screen transition results in instant death the game becomes increasingly frustrating to play. Controls are fairly well done, emulating the swipe controls of Mirror's Edge quite well, but jumping often feels unresponsive. Certainly a high difficulty in games can be rewarding, but most hazards in this game are unavoidable the first time you encounter them, resulting in the game devolving to a time consuming and frustrating one of trial and error. This might be more bearable if the death animations could be skipped, but they have to be endured every time before the player can retry. This is all such a pity too, as the atmospheric and unique visuals look fantastic and really do convey the feel of being on an alien world, the sound effects complement this perfectly too. If only something could be done about the gameplay....Version: 1.1

Evil! The controls are terrible and so is the checkpoint system. I was playing the sane 5 minutes of game for an hour because he cant freaking jump!.Version: 1.2

AwfulReally quite a horribly terrible game, or at least an attempt at a game. Difficult controls in a very basic 'plot' which involves a guy jumping over some kind of leech or something. Don't spend your hard earned money on this exceptional waste of pixels..Version: 1.4

Where's the music?????The gameplay is on point ! But where is the epic music during the gameplay??? The music was the most memorable part of the whole game for me!!! Please make an update WITH MUSIC!!! ITS NOT THE SAME.Version: 1.2

Massive nostalgiaShort and sweet review. Brilliant game, well suited to iOS but sort. The. Saves. Out. Only buy if your willing to bang your head against a wall when you die. My ipad has very nearly has a flying lesson!.Version: 1.4

I wanted to like it...I really like the graphics and was exciting about playing it but the controls are really bad. I tried over and over but the lag was just too bad and I gave up. Fix the controls and I’ll try again..Version: 1.5

I want to like it but...Like most reviewers here, I loved the original and so it was with great excitement and anticipation that I waited to play the iPad version. I want to love it, I really do but the controls are amongst some of the worst I have experienced on the iPad resulting in endless deaths that I don't feel at all responsible for: double taps that inexplicably don't register, the character running in the wrong direction even when I'm tapping on the correct side. It's all just very clunky and almost unplayable. That combined with the fact that game design has really moved on a long way since the old days, meaning that the die, repeat, die, repeat gameplay feels antiquated. I can only assume that everyone else reviewing here is doing so through extremely rose tinted spectacles. On the plus side, the graphics have been carefully and beautifully updated. I can't really recommend it except for those who want to relive the original, and even then perhaps it's best to leave the memories intact..Version: 1.1

So much potentialVery disappointed. Horrible controls and horible check points. You will die over and over and over and over at the same place due to horrible game controls, finally beat the hard part, advance screens ahead, be attacked from off screen and die, then start over before the hard part that took so long to get past. This game will make you want to smash your phone. Buy something else..Version: 1.4

CorruptedApp will not download & crashes my iPad every time I try. Other apps download fine. I've been charged for this but unable to play. Fix or refund please!.Version: 1.4

Could be betterNeeds a better save mode in game, and controls are not the easiest to use..Version: 1.4

Can only play it onceIt's just problem solving and once you've finished the game once u don't play it again.Version: 1.2

Nightmare modeVery hard platformer to play. Unlike other games that are more forgiving, I find I had to do a lot of trial and error just to get through the levels. Oh and you die many many many times. How is that fun?.Version: 1.1

Controls are bad; sound is brokenOnce upon a time, I beat this game on, I believe, a 286 PC. It holds a special place in my childhood memories. However, this port suffers from controls that are awkward to the point of being nearly unplayable. In addition, the sound effects on my ipad 3 are slow and low, like an LP record being played at half speed. Plus one star for a great game, but minus three for terrible controls..Version: 1.4

Too difficult, no save, not funFor a new player of this game, it's really annoying dying and redoing the same levels again and again. ugh. maybe 20 years ago this was the norm, but now it's just boring..Version: 1.2
