✓ Great Purchase 5 StarsI just got this today and while I've only solved about 15, I can already give this 5-stars. Very nice user interface, one of the cleanest looking chess sets on the iphone. The puzzles are great, some were very challenging for me as a 1100 player (and I'm only on 2 move mate, I'm sure 4 move+ is going to be insanity). My end game is pretty rough, I have trouble seeing mates, if this is you, you need this app. It will teach you different mates and I'm confident with practice you will recognize them in your games and help defend against a sudden check mate. This program gives you so much respect for these players and there's something cool about seeing the problems you face were historic games, not computer generated scenerios. The price is a steal at 99cents. I will probably buy the other chess puzzles this author has. 645 puzzles in total..Version: 2.6

✓ Fun, addictive, and challenging for keen chess noobsI'm a weak chess player with a terrible endgame, and I really think this app is improving my skills. I can't wait to play a game to see if I'm right. This app is challenging even at the two-moves-to-mate level for me, but it is addictive, and I've finished them all over the course of two days. The three-moves-to-mate puzzles are killing me! Sometimes I'd like to see the game history played out a move at a time. For example in puzzle 137 the ending was so straightforward I couldn't understand how a grand master (mistress?) had let herself get into a situation like that. You can see the game history but only in chess notation, which I would have to play out on a board to understand. All in all, an innovative and worthwhile app that lets me really enjoy an aspect of world-level chess games that are usually way over my head. A big thumbs up to the developer!.Version: 2.6

✓ Excellent and very challengingThis is a great collection of exercises on the tactical side of chess. They are organized staring with mate in two, then three, four, and so on. You can skip around as you like and I'm currently at the mate is five section. There's still one mate in four that stumps me though. I love that the computer will play any variation, so you can learn why "your" idea doesn't work. Puzzle hero, another great collection, doesn't do this. I recommend both. ✓ A great collection of mating nets, and the app can be improvedThis app collects over 600 mating nets from real games, from two-movers up to over 15 moves. (Top-flight players resign when the net becomes obvious, but this app gives you the chance to administer the satisfying coups de grace, if you can find them.) would that we could find these positions over the board! The app has some rough patches that can be fixed. On my year-old iPad Air, it still crashes if I tap "Previous game" even when there is one to select. There are undocumented functions, such as the mysterious "Figurine notion" I'm still trying to observe. Landscape mode, which it lacks, would be nice. A little editing of player names would improve things; I suspect some of the players with different names are really the same ones. (A previous review commented on the delay when you make a "wrong" move, but I can explain that one: there is an evaluation engine that kicks in and generates a response if you don't make the right move.) It would be nice to be able to search for mates by your favorite players. (Mine is Lasker.) All in all this is a very nice collection and a fun app for any chess player to have!.Version: 3.2.1
✓ Make it historicalMy major complaint: once one proceeds beyond 'Mate in 4' the computer starts thinking on its own, beyond whatever the actual outcome of the masters' game it's supposed to depict. If the idea is to learn from the recorded game, then what's programmed into it should reflect the actual game's notation, not allow it to respond with other possible solutions, even if other moves are possible. At such a point, there's no way to know what the master players' actual moves were..Version: 3.2.1

But I am finding it a useful way of getting back into chess as I have not had the opportunity to play for sometime. Further review - I have struggled with a couple of mate in 4s only to discover that the programme offers no solution. Disappointing. I would also like an option showing the solutions move by move, or the notation shown with the board in view. Is there an error in puzzle 403 solution? I don't think the solution matches the play.
