Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro for Positive User Reviews

Pretty complete music educationHaving played and studied music for decades now both independently and at school, I think this app is an exceptional music education on its own. Pairing the sound (i.e. emotion) directly with the core of theory (i.e. explanation) in example after example is extremely effective. Just bought it last night and have spent an hour with it—stunned..Version: 8.5.2

5 stars and beyondIf I could give more than 5 stars, I would! Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a game-changer in the world of music theory apps. It's like having a personal tutor, patiently guiding me through the intricacies of tonal harmony..Version: 9.5.5

Five stars, BUT…On the whole, MPTH for iPad is an astonishing piece of software, but there is one aspect of its UI that is utterly frustrating: inputting chords. For instance, yesterday, I was trying to create a chart for Paul Desmond’s version of “A Taste of Honey”. Its first four bars are made up of these chords: |Fm |Fm/E |Fm/Eb |Fm/D C7#9 | Having spent 5 minutes battling with the awkward process inputting the slash chords entails, I then set about searching for the C7#9. Despite using the Complete Map and Any Style options, and pressing all the C Dominant/Alt chords on the map to view the alternatives available for each, I couldn’t find a C7#9 and had settle for C7b5. After this, I gave up… The reasons for wanting to write the sequence into MTH was so I could use the analysis and upper structure functions, but inputting chords is just too exasperating. All of could be solved with a simple chord input panel, such as the one included in iReal or Chordbot. Maybe in the future this could be offered as a purchasable add-on like the Upper Structures and Target Note enhancements. There’s also the limited number of ‘styles’ (I’d really like a straighter groove for pieces like Maiden Voyage), but this isn’t such a deal breaker. Yes, I understand MTH is geared towards those who’s understanding of music theory is more advanced than mine, and that such people will have a greater knowledge of chord relationships represented on the Map, but this (what I feel is a) limitation in MTH’s interface is a real issue. Edit: Another *really* annoying issue: there is no option in MTHP’s option to bypass the auto-lock on my iPad. The only way to prevent it locking is to disable the function in iPad’s system settings, which really is a faff..Version: 8.9.1

Awesome! My fav music app. I have used it to play along with, and as an arranging aid for doing big band charts. Love it!.Version: 9.3.5

A master course in theoryThis app is a power house for anyone who has a need for becoming more skilled in music theory and harmonic analysis. And it also works as a backing track too! This is my go to app for anything music..Version: 9.5.5

A musician's best friend! This app is becoming my musical companion. Whether I'm composing, practicing, or analyzing music, Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is guiding me on every step. I couldn't imagine my musical journey without it!.Version: 9.5.5

Love it!Easy to use and does more than I expected!!! Happy with purchase. :).Version: 7.9.2

A Music Theory Playground!Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a playground for music theory enthusiasts! I spend hours exploring its features, experimenting with different chord progressions, and discovering new harmonic territories. Get it, you’ll learn a lot, no matter where you are in your music journey..Version: 9.5.5

How is this app even real??If you’re serious about learning music, I don’t know how you can’t buy this app. Ten bucks? And another 10 for over 1300 jazz standards? I’m appalled. This is not a joke. This is the real deal. I don’t even write reviews, but I had to for the this one. If you care at all about music theory, get this app right friggin now..Version: 8.9.4

Unbelievably Amazingly FantasticMapping Tonal Harmony Pro is by far the best app for serious musicians and composers wanting to understand existing chord progressions, or to create your own compelling changes. It’s an amazing app for play along, with thousands of existing tunes with incredibly great-sounding backing tracks. It’s everything you ever wanted to know about tonal harmony (but we’re afraid to ask). It’s iReal Book on steroids, and a whole lot more. It’s worth every penny..Version: 8.5.2

BrilliantThe reharmonisation option is amazing, the target notes add on is really cool but the upper structures are incredible and so much fun. My favourite app by a mile..Version: 8.5.2

Harmonic Analysis made easy!Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro has simplified harmonic analysis for me. Its powerful algorithms and user-friendly design allow me to explore tonal relationships with ease. This app has taken my musicianship to the next level!.Version: 9.5.5

Great teaching app!I have been using this app for over a year and it has helped me immensely. By listening to the MDecks video lessons and using the app I have become a more adept musician and have become more proficient at jazz improvisation while, at the same time, have been learning higher level music theory concepts. Love it..Version: 9.5.5

Give it a chance. Superb after-sales!!Well, had I written this last week just after buying it, I may have been tempted to give 2 or 3 stars. I am an experienced musician (classically trained in the main), so I was delighted to see this app which seemed to tie in my background with jazz really nicely. Warning number 1: After you download the app, to make it a useful play along for songs, you need to buy some songs. I decided on 1000+ jazz standards (£20 I think). The download is easy enough, but watch the YouTube video to show you how to import the xml into the app. Then it works like a dream!! The charts are easy to read and the analysis which is very comprehensive, can be turned on and off. Warning number 2: If you are using the app on your phone, be ultra careful when changing parameters on playback like tempo and style. You need to stop the playback before you change it. When inside the menu to change, again be careful to give a ‘long press’ to exit this mode and go back to your playback song. Please note: The problems I had were due to me jumping to conclusions and expecting the app to behave in a certain way. HOWEVER, when I contacted app support, the conversation online was second-to-none! The app developer made me personalised videos to take me through the app’s working feature and answered all my queries. Superb after-sales!!.Version: 7.5.2

:)Amazing app, nothing else like it!.Version: 6.3

So underratedAmazing app to learn harmony.Version: 9.7.8

Needs a control to turn down the drumsI need to be able to turn down the drums overall volume. I’d really appreciate it being in a new version..Version: 8.9.4

Incredible composition and harmony toolThis is the best app to study Tonal Harmony today and it gets better on every update. I highly recommend this app for anyone looking to compose, analyze or teach harmony. The upper structures and target notes are really useful if you want to learn how to improvise and play over chord changes. I would certainly recommend watching the videos to get a better idea of all the things you can do with this app. This app gets better and better. Saving performance settings is a great new feature..Version: 8.9.1

Great AppI love it but it’s a while to figure it out.Version: 7.9.9

Different take on harmonic analysisI have a number of music composers, chord progression apps but this is so different in its approach. I love experimenting with this program and have gained a lot of insight into chromatic harmony..Version: 6.16.2

The only app of its kind. Do not waste your time on anything else.I have a masters in composition , and BA in piano performance / music theory. I am able to distinguish gimmicks from valuable tools. It is clear the développer is a musician and theorist. This is not a gimmick. I am considered a Pessimist and rarely recommend anything that isn’t absolutely ground breaking. This is so many things. First off, the only comprehensive digital aid to help learn harmony showing how chords move in all genres. It is also a fantastic tool for backing tracks. It is a phenomenal tool for generating your own personal chord progressions in a quick way using built in algorithms to practice different concepts. It provides voicings , scales …. I have seen them all. Every app. This is the only one that made me reconsider developing my own a few years ago. It is updated very often and altho it can still use a few tweaks, it is just not comparable to any of the apps that claim to do the same..Version: 8.6.5

Pretty GoodI think some of the reviews on here are a bit harsh. I’m a wannabe jazz guitarist and this app gives me the ability to create play alongs for exactly the tunes I want and in the key and tempo that I need. It’s true that the interface is not intuitive but there is a decent manual and video tutorials. I’m not particularly tech savvy but after spending half an hour with the manual and basic video I was ready to create my first jazz standard jam track which took me about an hour. Not bad for a first try and I will be able to do it in a fraction of the time now I’m familiar with the app. I’ve given it 4 stars because of the interface (which is actually fine when you get used to it) and I would have liked a wider range of rhythm styles. With lots of jam tracks bundled with the app and access to a community of users on the cloud this app is very good value for £9.99..Version: 6.16.2

AmazingThis app opens up a world of opportunities that I didn’t know existed. The chord diagrams mean this is the only app I need now!.Version: 9.5.5

Best Practice Tool Ever! For me this is my favorite practice tool. It can do so many things well. I have never regretted this purchase and have added all of the iap options..Version: 9.5.5

Brilliant! The developers of this unique, innovative app are to be heartily congratulated! Mapping Tonal Harmony is a most intelligently designed and powerful app with a host of potential uses. These various possible applications are well demonstrated by the many excellent Youtube videos made to support the app. My own reason for purchasing Mapping Tonal Harmony was to use it as an aid to learning music composition. I have found it’s really helping me to develop a much clearer, more coherent understanding of harmony that successfully integrates (i) important overarching theoretical concepts with (ii) how various chord progressions actually sound. It’s invaluable to all those would-be composers who don’t happen to be pianists. The fact that the creator of MTH is clearly an experienced and highly capable composer himself means that the app has been designed by someone who really knows what is required. The capacity to explore progressions and then export them to Sibelius via a MIDI connection is invaluable to provide a basis for further compositional work. I believe that a forthcoming upgrade will also provide a ‘within MTH’ facility to produce notation from these chord explorations, something that will be of enormous value..Version: 6.16.2

SatisfiedTo the reviewer above....... it may be a little pricey, but musicians who use this, it’s well-worth the cost. A lot of time has gone into producing such a fine program..Version: 8.1.22

Great!.Hi, thank you for this app. Excellent app for composers and improvisers..Version: 9.5.5

Highly RecommendedThe latest versions of this app have taken it to a whole new level for both education and songwriting. If you have no formal training in music theory like me, its a bit overwhelming at first, but if you spend time with the newest tutorials and the manual, things start to gel in time. You can learn as you go. This is a deep app with lots of functionality and levels, so expect to dedicate some time to learning how to get the most out of it..Version: 6.7

Good appHelped me fill in a few holes in my theory knowledge. Also a good reference for things like, “How do I functionally write a subV again?” 4 stars because I’m on iPhone 6s and I don’t think it’s optimized for this device. This is a big app that suggests closing unused apps. A few screens hang or otherwise are a bit hitchy. Support was helpful when I needed it. I recommend it..Version: 8.5.3

The new user experience is awesome! From a user experience standpoint, this latest version of Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is top-notch. Navigating through its features is now smooth and easy. Kudos to the developers!.Version: 9.5.5

Amazing app for music enthusiastsMapping Tonal harmony is an absolute gem for musicians that want to delve deeper into music theory. With the new features and intuitive interface in the new version, it’s a dream come true! I really recommend this app to any musician willing to learn music..Version: 9.5.5

Great app but needs to be able to import xml sent from irealproHi This is quite an amazing app that really tidies up your jazz improvising mind. Great to play along to a tune and actually follow the movement on the map. However It really needs to accept songs sent from irealpro in xml. I dont want to have to rewrite every tune I want to play in full when Ive already got the chart in irealpro. So far the first 3 tunes I looked up werent in the app and I paid for the extra 1000+ songs thanks Adam.Version: 8.9.4

It’s so close! This is such a revolutionary concept for understanding harmony, substitutions, and more. It’s just that it really requires you to study the guide videos because there are some design choices that make using the app harder than it needs to be, with lots of icons that are not explained. This is an advanced tool to be sure, that well reward practice and extended use..Version: 9.5.5

User id entry impossibleTried to enter various user ids but kept being told already in database. Then tried to recover and told no such user id in database? Gave up after trying a dozen different ids..Version: 6.7

Finally ready for prime timeI’ve had this app for quite a while but hadn’t used it ... earlier versions seemed to me to be brilliant and intriguing but also frustrating. The core functionality was obscured by bad UX/UI. I stuck with iRealPro which is more modest in its aspirations and simpler to use. I don’t want to interrupt my practice time to monkey with an app. The harmony map is a cool idea but I don’t find much use for it. Finally, MTH has matured to the point it’s really usable, especially if you buy the 1000 jazz tunes in xml format and import them. The developers are responsive to comments. I’m sure further refinements are continuing. I’d recommend this for any serious student of music, either classical or jazz-based, or any player who wants to deepen their understanding of tonal harmony. Exporting backing tracks as MIDI creates amazing options. You can make a backing track in MTH and export it to your DAW to orchestrate it, or export it to MuseScore and see/edit it as a score, to use the backing track as a basis for a band arrangement! A forum to share user-created backing tracks would be a killer addition. Maybe the developer could be persuaded to create a companion app: mapping atonal harmony pro!.Version: 8.5.1

AmazingSuch an amazing app and keeps getting better. There is nothing like it..Version: 8.1.22

Harmony Made ClearMTHP 6 boils down abstract harmonic relationships into an immediate, hands-on audio/visual experience that makes exploring harmonies within any musical genre easy and fun. The app adjusts to suit a novice or Beethoven himself by contracting or expanding the harmony map, rewarding new understanding with new harmonic relationships. MTHP 6 adds new features to assist in composition and recording, even midi. This is one of my best iOS purchases ever. If you have ever struggled with theory or simply want a great tool for applying the knowledge, buy this..Version: 6.0

WowA workhorse app, combining harmonic analysis, visualisation, play-along and a built-in Real Book..Version: 7.20.2

Looking forward to using this beauty with the improved Audio EngineWas great before, but nice to see they went to work on the Audio glitches....Version: 6.0

A Music Theory professor's delightAs a music professor, I can't recommend Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro enough! This app is an invaluable teaching tool, offering my students an engaging way to grasp complex concepts. It's like having a theory expert in your pocket, and awesome to teach with..Version: 9.5.5

Wonderful softwareI have been using this for a few years. This latest update is fantastic. Even though it’s geared toward Jazz you can easily change that in the extensive menus for pop or classical. You can also select from a variety of styles to get many different chord voicings . Based on a simple and straightforward graphic of tonic/subdominant and dominant zones you can select what you see and what chords you can pick from. I tried “goodbye yellow brick road”...”life on Mars” and Faure’s “in Paradism” all where decoded with ease. It’s a fantastic tool for breaking down and studying harmony. Best Ed.Version: 8.6.1

Midi out is back! Just wonderfulThis is the most in depth theory app out there, and the UI keeps getting better. Now with midi out it again becomes a learning powerhouse, I use it to help learn chords on a Linnstrument, showing the chord on leds and sending midi to sound source of my choice to hear chords. It’s brilliant! Also works with NI Lightguide keyboards as well as qunexus. Worth every penny and then some. Hoping the rootless chords information gets added as next iap. This is the kind of app that can make an old iPad or phone useful for decades. Thanks for great stuff.Version: 8.6.1

Perfect for improvAs an improvising musician, Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro has enriched my musical vocabulary significantly. It's like having a treasure trove of harmonic possibilities at my fingertips. The target notes are my go-to feature for sparking creative ideas!.Version: 9.5.5

Harmonic Wizardry!I feel like a harmonic wizard with this app! The ability to visualize complex chord progressions and harmonic movements is nothing short of magical. A definite must-have for serious musicians..Version: 9.5.5

Truly ExcellentLove the UI and find everything super easy to understand. It’s deep...not for dunderheads or children..Version: 7.9.9

Guitar teacherExcellent software for teaching chord harmony with play along function. Mapping very clear and intuitive..Version: 7.9.9

Mmmmm....Update. The app is top of my iPhone XS battery use list, using up 64% in a day. I don’t even use the app on my phone, mobile data is off ! Any idea what is causing this? I’ve deleted the app from my phone, no issues on iPad. This app’ is well thought out and a great way to explain harmony visually as well as audibly..Version: 8.6.5

Fabulous composition toolI wish I would have had this app years ago when I first started studying composition. Starting with a key and simple diatonic chords, you can explore chord changes through related keys, borrowing chords from other keys, easily auditioning different ideas. You can also put together a chart with your chord changes, then have the app play back your progression with accompaniment (piano/bass/drums) in multiple different styles, with different variations every time. It’s like having a skilled backup band to instantly play through your changes. Once you have something you like, you can easily export to a DAW like Cubasis. The developer is very responsive. I’ve emailed him several questions about various features and he’s been back to me with informative answers promptly. I was a bit put off when first installing the app, and it asked me to create a user ID for an online database. I realized that all I needed to do was create a nickname and password - that was it. When I’m creating progressions, I simply mark them as ‘private’ and they are not shared with the community. But if you wanted to share them with other band members or students, you could easily do so. I’m still exploring and learning, moving through the constellation of related chords and tools. The online database of chord changes is like a dictionary of familiar progression fragments, a very useful and inspirational resource. Highly recommended..Version: 6.1

No longer a beginnerI always loved jazz but when I listened to jazz musicians talk about about jazz I felt I was listening to another language. So I began to study it, this app was recommended by a music teacher friend. It not only has helped me play and now understand that language I feel the music that I have always listened to in a much more intimate and understanding way..Version: 9.5.5

The best app I know of for exploring harmonyI’ve always thought this app was interesting but a little clunky, the recent updates completely fix that. The interface and sounds have been vastly improved, the additional of virtual players has added a new level of voicing exploration. I’d advise anyone interested in harmony to spend some time with this app - it’s helped me to discover and create harmonies which I wouldn’t have otherwise. **Original review for older version** I understand people’s complaints about the app being hard to understand (it is) but once you spend some time getting to know it, it becomes a useful tool for exploring classical & jazz harmony as well as creating chord progressions. The ability to send midi is great for jamming out chords into your DAW. Could definitely do with a GUI overhaul and clear in-app documentation..Version: 8.5.2
