Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro for Negative User Reviews

Virtual midi pleaseI don’t use my ipad with external midi devices yet i have many apps that can receive midi.please add virtual midi so i can send midi out to them..Version: 8.6.1

Target notes does not workUpdate to first response: okay target notes work. But no instructions on how to make them work. Why not a simple explanation on your web site like this: ==== To enable target notes or upper structures: 1. Go to the TOOLS menu (click on the hammer icon on right panel) 2. Select target notes drop down 3. Turn on target notes by selecting, single, combined or lines. Note that you must click to the right of the “off” button to select on of these options. Otherwise, the options are no clearly visible. 4. Choose one of the target note types below. Options are guide tones, tensions, chord tones. Follow a similar procedure for upper structures in the TOOLS MENU. An explanation like the above would save so much time. I spent time doing this so all you have to do is paste on the app and web site. This app does a lot of nice things but doing a lot of nice things means it has a complicated UI. Therefore, any add-ones need instructions. I’m upgrading to 4 stars. Would be 5 if you just provided instructions like I did. ====== First response: Added target notes under staff presets. Notes do not appear for any of the songs listed on your site. Examples: Afro Blue, Afternoon in Paris. I did rebuild the catalog..Version: 8.6.5

Misleading and OverpricedThe barebones app is $25, but it’s roughly $80 extra to actually get all the apps features. Complete rip-off..Version: 7.19.1

Could be goodThe basic idea of the program is solid and really helpful for developing progressions, but! There appears to be no way to midi export and the app is different from the screen shots and currently is way more limited in functionality than it states. There is no way to print out any progressions you write either making it fairly useless. A real shame as the actual core part of the app is solid and really useful for writing progressions it’s just not that practical to use often until these issues are fixed..Version: 7.0.3

CrashesCrashes on numerous occasions in song mode particularly. Gmail of mDecks is not valide and there’s no way to get support from the developper(s) on the web site. Hope that this post will get some attention from them..Version: 8.9.4

Not bad, not great. Not as easy to use as iReal pro. Repeat signs are non functional in ios as far as I can tell. Contacted support several times, no solutions or tutorial were offered. The map is fun to use and the playback styles are cool..Version: 8.9.4

Interesting app but feature doesn’t work properlyThe app itself with the maps and the play along backing tracks is great. However the advertised feature of airplay that came in an update doesn’t work as per the instructional videos on youtube, I’ve messaged and emailed the app developer on Facebook several times but no response for technical support and can’t see any other ways of contacting. Considering I need airplay to make the app useable I’m very disappointed. It could be a great tool but seemingly the app developer concentrates on YouTube advertising rather than responding to issues with the app.....Version: 8.5.3

Absolute garbageDrained both iPhone and iPad battery, even when killed (via app switcher). Used 100% CPU, non-stop..Version: 8.6.5

Absolutely direUsed to be quite good; now it is absolutely dire. A good example of modern software development - three steps forward and ten steps backwards..Version: 8.6.1

Not well supported on iPadI bought this app entirely on the idea that I could import jazz workbooks into it. App cost and workbook bundle later (50$) of stuff, turns out I cannot do any of that... what a ripoff....Version: 6.16.2

Needs ImprovementThis app needs to be simplified, why is there not a metronome for the play along. Menu diving, gets old real quick..Version: 8.9.4

Features for iPad are not the same as listedThe features in the list are for the desktop version, not the iPad version. You can’t browse “hundreds” of standards, there is maybe a dozen and you cannot import the fake book xml files that contain others, as you can on the desktop version. So, it has interesting features but unless you want to enter a bunch of songs by hand, you are stuck with the songs and progressions that are already in the app. Kinda a drag because the accompaniment play-along ability of the app is great, way way better than iRealB, better sounds and better comping. Hopefully in the future you can import files on the iPad version and load up the xml fake book files provided by the publisher. update as of 06/22 sooooo many bugs and inconsistencies make this program more frustrating than useful, in v8 slash chords do not work, there is no “pedal point” option when you click on the chord per the docs. The documentation does not reflect different platforms, it talks about right clicking…on an IPad??? This program has reached Band-in-a-Box level interface crime, it’s probably only useable by the guy who wrote it, or someone that wants to devote a lot of time to figuring out how things work via trail and error. Better off getting the free player app instead for simple playback..Version: 8.9.1

Doesn’t work on iPhone! Still!First time opened after latest update. Rebuilds ok. Got intro this time. Then... loading interface - crashes! And then crashes every time on startup. Fix this bug!.Version: 8.3.6

Needs instructionsMight be worth £12, I dunno. Can't figure out how work it. Desperately need some sort of manual or tutorial. Says it can record chord progressions. How? The stuff about analysing Bach etc is very misleading. As far as I can see, I have to have the tracks already, they are not built into the app..Version: 6.9.7

Editor too complicateI’m not able to find Dø7 in the chords mapping. The strangest is that my review doesn’t matter for the global review, which remains at 5 starts..Version: 8.6.5

It’s way too complicatedIt seems like you have created something incredible, but the UI is impossible to use. I have no idea how to use it, even after watching all of your YouTube tutorials. I even went to the manual on the site, but there is no information on how to use anything. I don’t know what any of the side buttons to on the UI, I’ve clicked every button, but I can’t seem to get rid of the song editor. The buttons don’t really do what I think they would do. I am overall, just very confused. It seems like a revolutionary idea though to have all chord progressions in one page, and it seems like you put in a lot of work into this. But I think not many people understand what this is… If the UI can be better explained, and if you can explain to beginners what this is, this would be much better. I know quite a bit of theory, but I still do not understand which is a shame. I really would like to understand it..Version: 9.5.5

Bug: Reharmonize feature closes appOne of the biggest reasons I bought the app, the reharmonize generator, crashes the app on use. Everything else works and looks good. Still a little disappointed but willing to update review once fixed..Version: 8.9.4

Complex interface, Steep learning curveThis app looks like it may, at some point, be a great learning and composing tool. But it suffers from a complex, confusing interface that makes it extremely difficult to understand and use without investing a ton of time experimenting, watching videos, making mistakes, etc. I think the average person, who wants to be at least somewhat productive immediately, is not going to have the patience to become proficient in using this app without getting frustrated and mad first. But I do recognize that under the covers there are some powerful features that I would love to be able to use more easily. And if the developers brought in a study group of average musicians who sit down with the app, picked a key and started to experiment while the developers are observing their frustrations, I’m sure improvements in the interface could be made to make it more intuitive. Personally I don’t have the hours to waste trying to learn this app. So for me, the $9.99 I paid for this app was not spent very wisely..Version: 6.16.2

Great app, zero customer serviceI reached out to them prior to purchasing their app to get some information, and was never contacted. A year went by and an app of theirs went on sale the play along version of this particular app I bought it and paid for all the standards. Not long ago, the pro version went on sale, which I then purchased. But apparently the IEP does not transfer, so I have to manually send each XML file to the new app, should be an easy fix, reached out to the company, crickets…..Version: 9.5.5

Paid $15 so I could buy the rest of what’s advertisedDon’t waist your money..Version: 9.7.8

Interesting idea. Terrible UXThe UI is extremely buggy and unintuitive. Especially for writing your own chord progressions (which is what I wanted it for). I hope I can get a refund. Maybe it’s better on Mac OS.Version: 7.5.4

Great App! Needs Looping ImprovementThe core app, it’s design, functions, operations, and exceptionally good add-ons I have only praise for, BUT, like Achilles, it has one crippling flaw. Looping some chosen measures of a tune for focused practice is a complicated, many-touch, tedious drill-down though hidden menus every time you want to do it, which for me is many times a day, every day. Fixing this one thing cleanly (ala iRealPro, for example) would make MTHP my all-the-time go-to app, which it can never be without this fix..Version: 9.5.5

2nd time aroundI purchased this app a few years ago and was disappointed with what seemed to have a lot of potential. The developers did actively reach out after a few updates, so I decided to give them some time to grow. It would appear by the recent reviews that this software has begun to fulfill its potential, so I figured I would try them out again. Unfortunately, I was greeted by the need for me to repurchase the product for my MacBook, which is something I am simply not going to do. That is absolutely ridiculous and I’m sad to say that I won’t be bothering with this software. I’ll give you one more star than before because apparently you have made the application much more appealing. Those efforts should be recognized regardless of my issues with your marketing..Version: 8.5.2

PoorExecutionThis ought to be the killer of clunky-sounding old iReal Pro, but its poor design choices and ham-handed execution make it almost unusable. I bought it to use on an iPhone, and on that platform at least, the UI elements are far too small and fiddly to use. Perhaps a fairer trial would involve a tablet or a laptop, but nowhere did I see a 'Not Suitable for iPhone' warning. MTHP crashed several times in the course of ordinary use, losing the work I was attempting. The existing library of tunes is partially pay-walled off, you cannot edit the ones that the platform does provide, and there is no reservoir of freely available ones to download. This kneecaps the app's usefulness. MTHP is a cathedral, when it ought to be a bazaar. It certainly does a better job than iReal Pro of being a rhythm section — far better. And its scope and ambition is also far greater than iReal Pro's. I believe, however, that it’s as an alternative to iRP that most users will approach MTHP, and they will be frustrated by it. MTHP's developers must first make their app far more usable along those lines, and make its other capabilities secondary to that. Getting rid of its wrong-headed approach to repertoire/catalogue would be essential. I gave MTHP two stars instead of one, only in recognition of what it's *trying* to do..Version: 9.5.5

Voicings Keyboard still not workingIt’s been over a year and I can’t believe you still haven’t fixed this. When the keyboard is loaded on the panel it doesn’t show anything..Version: 8.9.4

Not transposing on May 2022Today May 3rd 2022 the app is not transposing. It does change the chords but when you play it, it keeps playing in the original key instead of the new key. Also, I set 4 repeats for one song and it’s affecting all of the other songs. I was hoping to use this app in a gig next week but it’s unreliable. Beware!!.Version: 8.9.1

Midi malfunctionThe app advert claims midi export of arrangements - an attractive feature for iOS musicians. It doesn’t mention that export is limited to iTunes library, access to which requires a separate PC. This is a serious omission and flaw, if not a mis-sell. Other apps have the ability to export midi to other compatible apps - if you advertise such a feature, it should be present and able within the app and upon its own platform.Version: 8.6.5

Background Activity, serious battery drainThis app is bordering on being useless now. I have written directly to the developer to no avail, re battery drain due to Background Activity, a couple of times now. I charged my iPad Pro (it has the M1 chip) to 100% in the last 24hrs…left it in my bookcase, and the battery has dropped to 19%. Background Activity at 97% for this app. Total power drain by this app. I need to use my iPad Pro just now and can’t because I forgot to check if it was left open. My workaround has been to shut the app down and reboot each time I use it. A tiresome and a terrible way to use this app. APPLE SHOULD REMOVE IT FROM THE AAPP STORE UNTIL IT IS FIXED. This app costs quite a bit of money with the add-ons and this sort of thing shouldn’t happen. I would have thought that good power management would be elementary. I have the latest release of the app. No more excuses please. Please post, and FIX it..Version: 8.6.5

DisappointedThis app looks like a great tool for jazz musicians but after trying to figure out how to download the 1000+ jazz standards for my iPhone as a better replacement for iReal pro I couldn’t figure out how to import the songs to my iPhone and why I have to pay on PayPal with my card and not through apple. It would be nice if there was a way to download the songs from the app like the iReal pro forums. I’m trying to get a refund but I’m not tech savvy enough to figure out how to do that so hopefully someone has a game hanging answer or the dev team finds a way to help me. Otherwise I’ve just wasted money and I hope anyone who sees this will not waste their money as well. Thanks. Update: the developers got back to me a week later and sent me a link to a step by step guide to downloading the jazz sheets. I guess most jazz players are tech savvy these days but it’s a few too many steps for me. I’ll wait until they come out with an easier way. Good luck to anyone who attempts to make this app work for them. Thanks.Version: 7.5.2

Nice, a bit lackingI prefer the sound of the play along on this app way more than the iReal pro which can get pretty corny at times. However, I can’t figure out why on certain songs the bass can’t play a simple walking bass line after the first/second chorus of a song which is what you’d normally expect while playing with a backing track. It would be great if it could also play in the background and not only while you’re on the app like the iReal does. The last thing I wish the play along could do is be able to change the style of the song. Many jazz standards can be played in a variety of contexts so it would be great to have that option readily available like the iReal does. If they could fix these things I’d happily change my rating and use this as my main play along for shedding. Thanks..Version: 7.10.3

UI nightmare to navigateAfter having purchased Tessitura which is a fabulous app I bought this one. After 1 minute of use the sound effects are so cheesy and annoying that I wanted to switch them off. Try finding a settings button. Not obvious if there is one. I a manual it is one of the first things you introduce the user to. The GUI in general is clumpy, chunked and animated by the useless UI sound effects. Didn’t get as far as making any sense of the app. Doesn’t seem possible this is by the same developer as Tessitura.Version: 6.15.1

Great samples, awful user interfaceThe developer offers great samples, appealing voicing/chords and very nice percussion sounds but the goodness ends there because the whole program is just not ready to accomplish its full potential. The user interface, its functionality and ease of use are way, and I mean way below par. It’s a great app if you just want to play along but if you push it to write your own stuff in a simple concise manner, this app will be exceedingly frustrating. Expensive too if you buy the Real Book. In short, whoever designed the user interface was really out of touch and in his own world, unreachable. Sounds great but practically worthless for a creator that’s wants to be precise and truthful to his own creativity. App receives a resounding F grade..Version: 8.6.1

Great idea, egregious executionI don’t write many reviews, but couldn’t hold back here. An expensive and highly aspiring application which should never have been released to the public without sufficient beta testing. Not only is the UI laborious and non intuitive, but the program is incredibly buggy seemingly without any effort from the developer to address obvious concerns. One basic example would be that the program does not automatically open selected items. Rather, the user is forced to manually close a a screen view before he/she can work with a selected item, ie. song file in a portion of the program/different screen view. Screen icons are tiny and unintuitive as well. It really is too bad because the program would be a fantastic teaching tool if not for the horrendous UI, essentially rendering the app useless..Version: 8.5.1

No editor how to videos, pdf, just ignored.,The app does have value especially to keep one focused on the musical relationships of tonal and functional harmony principles. It also has porential to be a great app. My biggest dissapointment is the editor features are completely ignored and neglected. NO EDITOR INSTRUCTION pdf or video. I needed to erase left over measures and tried to guess what the symbols do, some are intuitive but others are not. I could never find editor functions instructions or a video. For the price, and all the videos and books, in app purchases mdecks pretends to sell, it ought to include a decent editor and support. Mdecks spends much effort on making promo videos. If the consumer is willing to spend and pay tgeir asking price, mdecks should lusten and give the buyer an editor and support..Version: 7.20.2

Disappointed with support. Regretting buying it.I have both the iOS version (on my iPad) and the MacOS version (on my MacBook Pro). I bought MTH Pro to learn more about harmony/chord function. Having watched a series of MTH videos ‘decoding’ the harmony in a popular song, I was unable to download the song from iTunes, as instructed in the videos. I followed the instructions, but it simply did not appear in iTunes. My main complaint is that, apart from an initial enquiry in the YouTube comments (which did not resolve the issue), I have received no further reply at all from mdecks, despite sending several emails. Not good enough, mdecks! In addition, overall, I have found the interface and basic functionality clunky and unwieldy, and frankly, I’m regretting spending $46.99 (AUD) for the iOS version, when mdecks don’t respond to a query regarding the very thing for which I bought MTH. Update, 12 December. More unanswered emails. Do not expect the courtesy of a reply from mdecks. Downgrading my previous rating of two stars to one star, based on total lack of response..Version: 6.16.2

Needs an updateIt is very far behind the Mac version. It needs an urgent update.Version: 6.16.2

Could be cool….butI got the free Play-Along version of this app and liked it a bit more than IReal. I then paid $9.99 to download the 1300 song jazz catalog. It is for the most part a very comprehensive catalog. I then read on the app that if I bought the Pro version, I would keep all of my songs and be able to use them in the Pro version. This does not seem to be true, or it is not entirely evident how to get them to show up on the IOS version. I found this to be highly disappointing and am now considering this a waste of money! I really wanted to like this better, but the fact that I can’t access the songs that I ALREADY bought from them seems like wack. I emailed the contact information for the company and never received a response either. When I go to files on my IPad, there is no file under these two apps with songs in them???? Where are they? I could change my opinion on this I find out that there is a solution. I also find the “information” dialogue box that pops up every time you touch practically anything on this app to be tiresome. Perhaps there is a way to make this blue box stop popping up? Also, for the most part, on the IPad, I just want to play some songs for practice and have them sound good. I appreciate that the app does some better stuff than IReal, but I don’t really see the benefit of the whole mapping visual display of the computer thinking etc. since it is really quite small and I am trying to play while the song is going along..Version: 10.1.3

App crashes a lot, very poor technical supportMapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a fantastic idea, and has many wonderful attributes. It is well worth the price. However, be aware of a large learning curve, and next to no technical support. Currently my app will not load and I am on the verge of losing a lot of work, and they are proving no help. There’s a lot of tutorial videos, but it’s very difficult to search for what you are looking for. Also, email support is all but non-existent. There are many bugs and UI issues that, when solved, will make this a wonderful tool. For instance, every time you save a new progression and then tap play, the program crashes. If you have saved your work, you will not lose anything, but a pain in the neck to deal with. The play button is tiny, and any transpositions you want saved with a progression do not save. If you are looking for a much simpler and consistent play along app iReal Pro is still your answer. MTHP might get to be your best choice, but still has work to do..Version: 8.6.5

Overpriced and better optionsThis app is way to overpriced when there are much better options. iReal pro is much less expensive, and actually comes with the music. If you want any more than about 5 music backing tracks, it is another 30 dollars. Unreasonably expensive, and wish I got a refund while I could!.Version: 7.10.3

Avoid this terrible, terrible appWon’t save settings, have to tap tiny buttons numerous times and fiddle around aiming your finger to transpose, set loop points, press play, and do the most basic functions. Very slow and inefficient compared to iReal. If you are a jazz musician you will have to pay for the app a second time to get the standards library. Tonnes of totally useless features and awful tiny graphic design. Even loading a tune is a hassle with the several tiny button pushes it takes just to do that. Extremely disappointed..Version: 8.6.5

Like the idea but! This looked so intriguing in the App Store but fails with poor ui and not load tracks into the app properly feeling very frustrated. specially for £12 this is a very poor app.Version: 6.9.7

So much potential but..There is so much depth in this app and the quality of the player audio is better than the other app I use regularly. But the user interface is dreadful. Things you need to press all the time are tiny and hard to find. Large chunks of the screen are wasted on things that I don’t want to see and I often can’t figure out how to get popovers and menus to go away. Things you need to access frequently are squirreled in deep menus and I feel like I need new glasses just to use this app. The UI should just be redone completely with a focus on common use cases. Ironically I saw an ad for this app and clicked through only to realize that I had purchased it years ago and gave up on it then. I had forgotten about it and decided to give it another chance. My main feeling when I’m using it is just confusion. I’m sorry to be negative about something that is a labor of love for someone - it’s just very idiosyncratic and arcane to me..Version: 8.6.1

Not user friendlyIt is not user friendly. Eg. to write down a song title, you have to touch an empty bar. Adjust the number of bars, only worked once, then stopped working. When I saved a song I create, It wasn’t in my preferred folder. You can only save it inside your phone. I have not been able to do an 8 measure song in a week. Menus are not intuitive. Sorry guys. In one sentence, the app is difficult to use..Version: 7.9.2

Very Poor User DesignThe design of the app is so complicated and frustrating. I spent $20 on an app which is very expensive, and was so excited to use it. I opened a song and could not close it at all. I had to delete the app to get back to the main menu. I am very disappointed for this reason. The other features are great but something has to change because it is nearly impossible for me to figure out how to exit the song or staff. I just wanted to get back to the map..Version: 9.5.5

Incredibly Poor Customer ServiceI initially downloaded the free “play-along” ap and purchased the 1300 song ad-on. I figured I would probably upgrade to MTH and since their info said I could use my add-on purchase for MTH, I figured it was safe to get the add-on. After I upgraded to MTH I found that the add-on would not load (contrary to their info). I contacted them and their initial answer (from Mario) was to remove and re-load MTH. That did not work. I was then told that my issue would be sent to their developer team. That was several weeks ago. I have made a number of attempts to get an update. There is nothing but crickets. I am being ignored. Are the developers so inept that they can’t solve the problem or do they just not care. I am very disappointed. I strongly recommend thinking twice before paying money for any of there products. If an issue can’t be solved be reloading the app they seem to lose interest in you. So sorry I gave them my money..Version: 8.5.3

Fairly uselessHere is a further update to my review of 22nd November. 1. I have been unable to get the zipped file to open. 2. I have not heard anything more from the M decks music. Here is an update to my original review 22nd November 2019 I purchased the zipped file to enable me to set up the play along capabilities. The link didn’t work and I emailed the developer who kindly supplied me a another link which takes me to the home page of the Mdecks website but no sign of a file to download. I have use I real Pro for ages and it works really well as does Anytune Pro+ which is use pretty much every day. So far I have made no progress with this and will probably chalk it down to experience. Very disappointing, I will post a further update to this review if I get anywhere. As an adjunct I keep getting advertising on YouTube telling me how great it is which is really starting to irritate me as I cant get it to work. I bought this programme and really can’t make any sense of it. I have tried to find a simple guide to using it. I have not managed to download any of the jazz standards onto it as the pictures on the tutorial are completely different to how they look on my iPad. I am not going to spend more money downloading the various user guides as I have no confidence in the product. All I want to do is basically input progressions and then re-harmonise them as well as well as looking at jazz standards. This programme interface is very poor. Do not waste your money unless you have a lot of time to spend on this..Version: 7.9.9

UnintelligibleI have taught harmony at university, am an experienced jazz player and software developer, but I cannot understand how to make most of this work. The on-line (NOTE not in-app) manual is either out-of-date or for a future release. Angry frustration kicked-in before I could get any use out of it. Pity, as the musical aspect looks interesting..Version: 6.14.2

Hard to understand, unable to useAll i wanted is to have an app that can build me chord progressions for noodling with my guitar.. bought this because of reviews, but i found the app very hard to use, i dont understand, and creating my own chord progression is very hard to do.. even when saving it, it returns the groove to Jazz, when I set it to rock. Tried to look for step by step tutorials on these and its hard. I dont play jazz and this app is very jazz centric. I feel i wasted £19.99 as u really am unable to use this. If there is a way to get a refund, that would be great. Already deleted it on my ipad..Version: 8.5.2

Frustrating - not worth the moneyI bought this app as an alternative to iReal for its high quality and customisable playback. Maybe the app is not solely intended for this but the playback is great and it could be a really useful practice tool. However it costs an extra £20 to import the library of jazz standards and creating your own charts from scratch is not straight forward - often not even possible due to arbitrary limitations and flaws in the UI which is needlessly complicated and counterintuitive. The various options for editing charts and playback seem randomly placed throughout the various drop down menus. There are loads of specialist options for some things but very often the simple one you want just isn’t there and you’ve wasted five minutes looking for it. This app is not well thought through at all. The developers need to go back to the drawing board..Version: 8.5.2
