Tsumego Pro (Go problems) for Negative User Reviews

What is happening?Maybe it’s because I am a beginner in Go, but I just don’t get it. The app just has some inbuilt problems, and no explanations at all. What does it mean to solve a problem? When is it solved? What is the problem at all? There are just some predefined moves which are need to be made for some unknown reason and if you are not following them, you are wrong. Maybe some instructions would help..Version: 2.19

Useless for beginnersIt’s great. The problems offer ‘correct’ solutions but they seem to contradict what I’m learning about go, and no explanations are given whatsoever! Not a good beginner app..Version: 2.19

SingularI can see how this is a good way to exercise thinking and strategy in Go, but it is based on the assumption that the opponent will follow the counter moves and that it is possible to “solve” the situation. When really, the possibilities are as unique and diverse as ones opponents!.Version: 3.05

Learning goI do not understand whe question button. When you do a problem, you press the question button so it will give you a hitn, then a red dot appears on a point, but when you press the dot it says ‘wrong.’.Version: 3.05

No explanations, problems seem to have arbitrary solutionsFrustrating Missed opportunity to make a great app. Adding explanations would make it worth 4 stars at least.Version: 2.03

Not very helpful for meMaybe I’m too new to the game but I do understand the rules and this app has no dialogue box to give hints or reasoning in words as to why one move is superior to another. It maybe more useful for higher skilled players but for me it wasn’t very helpful. I’ll come back and try the app again after a bit more practice..Version: 3.05

Decent practice, far from greatFor a free app that provides daily baduk (go) puzzles, this isn’t bad. But a few things. If you’re not already familiar with the rules of baduk, then this won’t be for you as there’s no explanations on how to solve the puzzles or why you’re wrong. Second, all too often I’m given a puzzle that has more than one solution, but the app will only consider one correct. Third, often times the “correct” solution requires the opponent to make specific moves that don’t make much sense. And forth, sometimes the solution the game says is correct is not a solution at all. My stones are still unsettled and can become dead depending on the next move your opponent makes. This, this app assumes you’ll be playing morons. But, not all the practices are bad, I’d say only 1 out of 5 actually has the above issues. And did I mention its free with no ads? So, 3 stars for me..Version: 3.05

Tutorial missing???I saw some playing the game and was curious enough to find an app to see how the game is played. I love the simple problems to solve, and the daily updates, but still have no idea what the rules of the game are that govern the strategy and make one move wrong and another right. I kept thinking I would figure out by seeing what works, but I haven’t yet. I ordered a rule book, but it would be helpful to have explanations-for good moves and bad. It seems that if there a problems to solve, the problems have solutions based in rules and strategy and it would be a great learning tool to have bad moves explained. I’m just spitting in the wind right now, landing by chance on a good move after several wrong moves with no idea why. Every problem is hard without knowing the underlying rules and strategy, so advancing from one level to another is meaningless to me right now. This app is only for people who know the game, but not people trying to learn..Version: 2.18

Manque les explicationsBeaucoup de problèmes, mais comme débutant, je ne comprends pas pourquoi c’est résolu ou non...ni tester pourquoi (si c’était possible, ce serait top).Version: 2.19

Needs workSo I downloaded this game. Although it gives lots of problems to solve, it doesn’t tell me why my move was correct or how I solved the problem. When I ask for a hint, and then move to the recommended spot, the game tells me it was a wrong move! So then I go through and try every available spot all are wrong, then I pick a spot I already tried and it tells me I solved the problem?!? So no this did not help me to learn go, just made it even more confusing..Version: 2.19

Nice interface, faulty contentThe interface is very reliable and easy to use. Considered as an app, this product is very nice. Unfortunately the quality control on the actual go problems is not great, especially at the Intermediate level. There are a number of duplicate problems. Solutions that clearly work are marked wrong, while suboptimal solutions are marked correct. It would be great to add a feedback channel so that there is some hope of correction..Version: 2.19

❌wrongThat’s all It’ll tell you when you Make a wrong move and then if you make a correct move all it does is allow you to keep going. It doesn’t tell you what you did wrong, doesn’t tell you what the correct move was or why it was correct. You just literally have to keep guessing, makes no sense. I’m not able to learn anything! No explanation! No help! Oh don’t bother pressing the ? In the bottom right corner because it’s just there for show leads nowhere. waste. of. time..Version: 3.05

It works, but it’s not a good option for a beginnerFirst off: this app has not crashed on me or spammed me with excessive adds or notifications. That’s enough to get three stars from me. It also has daily updates for new problems The problems don’t seem to be organized in a way that’s meaningful in terms of difficulty. The easy problems don't seem any easier or harder than the basic problems or the intermediate ones. It does say when a move is “wrong” or “right” but there are no explanations why or anything like that. If you know what you're doing and just want a bunch of problems, maybe this is fun. If you're trying to learn, maybe try another option first..Version: 2.19

Lacking feedback, errors, & lack of controlThe often tells you that something is solved or wrong with little to no feedback as to why. Similarly, there are problems where "wrong" is actually a survivable situation, or when the "right" solution is vulnerable, or a better solution is available. Without the ability to play each side from the beginning it's also impossible to play out each possible scenario..Version: 2.19

Good, BUT...Love this app, BUT the bookmark function doesn’t work properly. It bookmarks problems then won’t do any new ones. Is there an upper limit?.Version: 2.23

Learn the game firstLots of people say they don’t understand how it works. That’s because Tsumego is for people that know to play the game. Step 1 is the learn the rules. This app is step 5. That said, it’s pretty good, but does have some problems that are incorrect. One of the daily problems today, White can easily survive, but the app places a white stone in a stupid place. Double check your tsumego problems!.Version: 2.19

Incorrect problemsI don’t know if anyone else has this problem but some of the problems that appear on the new problems page are incorrect. When I figure out the problem such that it says solved, I would continue with white and I don’t see a way for the problem to be solved for black. Not sure what that’s about, and pretty annoying.Version: 3.06

Great program with some problems.I really like the Tsumego program and even purchased the complete All-Access Pass for extra problem sets. The purchase was made on my iPhone but they do not appear to be transferring to my iPad. I've contacted the support and will increase my review based on the outcome..Version: 2.10

No good for beginnersIt does not tell you the rules of go or allow you to play a game from the beginning. This app is a waste of time for beginners.Version: 2.13

Crashes when trying to get more problemsGood as far as it goes with the built-in problems, but it crashes if I try to buy more problem sets..Version: 2.02

Huh?First of all how do I play? This is weird second if you can play with your family how? Third this is confusing and can you say instead of saying wrong can you say nice try? Because maybe you are new and you don’t get it? This app is a money grabber you have to pay to get. more levels and there is only like 6 levels for free! Lol.Version: 3.05

Nice but unreliable dataThis is a lovely App but seems to be let down by buggy coding of examples....e.g sometimes there is no right answer and the supposed correct answer shows as wrong if you enter it yourself. Kind of let’s it down but would otherwise be great..Version: 3.05

For beginners: it’s okayMost of my use from the app is in the beginner puzzles section, so I’ll keep my comments to that. I find the beginner puzzles very difficult to solve, and to echo what another reviewer said, I often don’t know what “solved” means. If you already understand the principles behind the moves, then great, because the puzzles pretty much assume you have that knowledge..Version: 2.23

What it does and what it doesn’t...Tsumego Pro is ill-equipped for novices to the heuristics of the game. What this is good at doing is providing exercises and telling you either “Solved” or “Wrong”. What this is REALLY bad at doing is telling you why you are wrong. An opponent can tell me that I won or lost a battle. A teacher helps me understand why I won or lost. This is not a tool to help you learn strategies or heuristics. It’s just a puzzle book. And by merely saying “Solved” or “Wrong”, without any explanation, all you have is Trial and Error, 99 ways not to win, and uselessly-memorized patterns without heuristics or learning that will be worthless against an actual player..Version: 2.19

ObtuseDoesnt explain any expectations in the challenges, just bats you over the head with ‘wrong’ until you brute force it. Even then, it’s suggested solutions don’t work. I don’t get it.Version: 3.05
