23andMe - DNA Testing for Negative User Reviews

App Doesn’t Work GreatThe app is refreshing every 20 seconds so you’ll be reading something halfway down a page but if you can’t get it all read in 20 seconds the page refreshes and starts you back at the top so you have to scroll down like 20 times to finish reading something. It wasn’t always like this but after the update like 4 months ago this is how it always is now. I find it too frustrating to use the app which makes me very disappointed. And I don’t love that I’ve paid into this company and now they want more money to give me updated features, people who’ve paid $150 for their test should just get any updated features as they come for free. I like the idea of finding out what I’m made of and finding family who I didn’t know I had but the app is refreshing so much I can’t even use it, wish I could. This company has a good start but they seem to be going downhill fast with apps that aren’t working properly to now charging more for information that should have been included in the original costs..Version: 8.58.0

Useful, but in a buggy and ad laden sort of wayThe app is nice in that it offers a good deal of information but must I be inundated with ads after I’ve already spent a hundred bucks for their kit? A subtle reminder that additional services are available would be lovely but 23andMe’s approach is somewhat like your cleaners starching the crotch of your suit to remind you that they also do dry cleaning: embarrassing for them and irritating for you. Furthermore, it would be pleasant to be able to complete a survey - for which I get nothing - without the app going down like a five dollar escort. If it’s going to crash as often as it routinely does, upon relaunching it should at least have the grace to take me back to where I was before it fell on its sword so I don’t have to dig through its DNA-soaked underwear to find my place. Thank you.Version: 9.34.0

FrustratedI registered my kit and sent it away. Now the app is saying “no profile found” when I go to enter the barcode in it says the barcode is already being used. I have no idea what has happened with my DNA..Version: 9.29.0

Top choice STILL requires extra payments?Holy crap, choose the premium package and STILL required to make additional payments in the app annually? What a SCAM.Version: 9.50.0

Money ScamI paid nearly $500 for this, and now your going to add perks that we have to pay additional funds to get, out of our DNA! What’s up with that? Yet you have ALL MY DNA, do you understand that is everything I have, and now you want more money to give a little bit more information to me out of MY DNA!! Very disappointed in 23&me!! It’s more like 23 & MORE MONEY without the PLEASE!!! I wouldn’t recommend 23&Me to anyone, anymore Period.Version: 10.7.0

One of the unlucky ones...This is not a bad review for the app, but for the entire system of 23andMe. I seem to be one of the unlucky few that has very little DNA to be sampled from my saliva. On both attempts to submit samples I expressly followed the directions; in fact I did it first thing in the morning after waking up. Not only did the first attempt take forever to actually get to the destination for testing, I had to wait forever to actually find out that it failed. And now with the second attempt I am completely discouraged with this entire experience. I was really looking forward to finding out more about myself through genetic testing, but it is not meant to be. Perhaps I will try through another competing service and actually find out if it’s my problem or theirs. I also find the lack of direct customer service contact through the app a huge disappointment, and can’t help to wonder if it’s because they want to put the blame on the participants instead of their services. I will take my refund and gladly not participate in any of their services again..Version: 6.16.0

Shared matches are not seeing each otherHi I hope you and yours are doing well! I and many other DNA matches are having issues. We show matching to each other but not all us? For example: I show that “A” is matching to me and five other DNA matches but “A” goes to look at those five DNA matches to see how they are connected to them, 3 of the matches are not showing up for A? When clearly on my end I’m showing that they should be matching to them because the system shows that we are shared DNA matches, over 20cm. Another example is I am a profile manager for my uncle and he is showing shared matches to one family line. I reached out to one of the persons on that line and asked them if they could tell me how they show matching to my uncle but they can’t pull him up but I clearly show that he is matching to them. And it’s not just happening to me there have been other people saying they are seeing the same issues. Is there a fix in the works? thank you.Version: 10.33.0

Greedy companyIt’s a disappointment of an app. Not worth several hundreds, sorry boys. It just isn’t there. + You can’t even be sure the infos given are correct. & 23&me decided to show you infos once you click on them: Surprise surprise! Another charge: 40$/m! Are you serious man?.Version: 11.1.0

Great concept... just not enough!! GgggI was so psyched to do the 23 & me DNA test... specially since I don’t know my heritage... family... health predispositions!! I received the kit as a gift from my friend, which makes the disappointment allot less painful. I thought that I would.. like the commercials show.. solve mysteries, gain this incredible new insight... etc. The results are minimal & somewhat cryptic. I was happy to find out pretty much what I already knew.. I’m white, if I eat too much I’ll get fat & have high cholesterol & by age 90 I’ll lose my marbles!! The health information portion is even more-so cryptic & vague I suppose to keep the hypochondriacs from having a nervous breakdown. So I bought the 23 & me plus... which further fueled my frustration. Anyway long review even longer... between Prometheus & Genomlink I’ve finally unlocked my DNA’s deep dark secrets. I do give 23 & me the credit for processing my saliva into letters & numbers!!! Btw.. the app works great!!.Version: 9.19.0

So inaccurateAll my ancestry results were wrong…. My traits … my relatives … everything…. I can actually trace my family and where we come from and 23 and me was 100 % wrong. My results were as far fetched as telling someone from India they are not Indian but all their family is from Ireland… or telling someone from Ireland their parents , grandparents and great grandparents are all from west Africa… when I questioned a supervisor about my results they were not accountable, and had no logical explanation, I honestly believe 23 and me is a scam. It has a rating of 1 at the bbb better business bureau, and I wish I checked this before using. I do not recommend!! Save your money!!! Do not buy!! This is good for someone who doesn’t know anything about their relatives and will then believe anything that is told to them… not for someone who knows… they are either blatantly lying or making guesses… some may be correct but mine is absolutely wrong! You have a better chance doing Google searches or using Facebook to do ancestry searches and find relatives..Version: 10.2.0

Horrible new interfaceNavigation got horrible. App became much worse..Version: 11.2.0

Overall disappointedThe services themselves are great, loved all the information provided with my results. However, very disappointed that I paid almost $300 for Ancestry AND Health results, yet when I finally received my results in order to view 90% of my health related results I was forced to pay an additional $40 for “23andme+”. If I had known this prior to purchasing my kit I would of simply gone with Ancestry or any of your other competitors that don’t prey on you financially.Version: 10.11.0

Use and function is lacklusterThe information gained within the app is stellar. The app itself lacks ease of use- messaging and personal information updates in particular. Had a conversation going with a probable family member going through the Relative page. We confirmed we were family and the message history didn’t transfer to the Family Connection page. Also, there wasn’t a notification of any sort on the app showing new messages. Updating family information is also a bit clunky. Seems there should be a space for adding to known family history in the profile section or a specific link in the tray. Shouldn’t need to navigate through a few links to adjust that info. Updates to genetic background seems solid. This rating is based solely on functionality of the app..Version: 5.2.0

I will never recommend againI used to encourage people all the time to share the experience in learning about their ancestry. Ever since they started the premium +, now I cannot see them as anything other than a cash grab. When I purchased my kit, I paid for ancestry AND HEALTH. I already paid for those results. To demand more money for more results because you as a company saw “and opportunity to grow your revenue” with a “now popular and common business model” says a lot. Some people’s results mean a lot to them, and this feels like financially preying on people who are desperate to learn things about themselves and their families..Version: 10.9.0

Unreliable delivery timeWe’ve sent two kits from the same address on the same date, my other half has received his, I haven’t, and have just been advised that my results will be delayed by two weeks (they keep pushing the date further). Obviously no robust triage system in place so don’t count on the date that they initially quote, you might be disappointed :-(.Version: 7.5.0

Bait and switchEntice you to part with your DNA, then add paywalls after the fact. Then you don’t have any bargaining chips left, and they will sell/analyze the aggregate data and monetize the discoveries in a way that only the very wealthy will benefit. Cost of breast cancer testing is a case in point..Version: 10.12.0

Poor supportDon’t waste your money with poor support My account has been locked and nobody supported and responsible..Version: 11.2.0

Limit on family I can enterI found this a waste of a lot of my time and the money paid for it. Why would you limit us on how many family members we can enter. Not much sense if not given the room to make the connections. Disappointed.Version: 10.1.0

Good but disappointedIt does tell me a lot about my genetic makeup and where I come from, however it tells I’m over 20% “Eastern European”; but doesn’t tell me where exactly from Eastern Europe. If I click on populations tested it says something like “not detected” on ALL populations from Eastern Europe, but still says I’m 20% from those countries. I’m confused, as far as I know now is that a big chunk of my heritage and genes come from a group of 15 to 20 countries however don’t know which ones exactly :(.Version: 11.4.0

They keep wanting more moneyThis app is designed to keep taking money from you to access features you should already have with the hefty price you pay!.Version: 11.38.1

Worst Support EverI tried to contact support about my storage accidentally being chosen to be discarded. There is no warning message and it can be easily and accidentally clicked on. There’s no option to undo it if you do accidentally click on it. I asked support if they can undo it, they took a while to escalate it. Then had a question about the surveys but was disconnected. When i tried to connect again to ask my second question the next agent didn't let me talk at all and said i see you talked with someone already have a good day. Two other people did that… i don’t know why i cant even ask a second question. It was very rude and repetitive. I finally got connected and when i went to log in for verification they left the conversation and the chat disappeared with my question. It was overall a bad experience and made me lose trust. Waiting for either a refund or new kit. Customer service was the worst-Lei was not helpful at all. Win and sophia didnt even let me talk. I feel really disappointed and unheard when i have questions about the application user experience and my sample. This is not okay..Version: 11.28.0

No real value for the moneyWell if you are reading this now it’s likely too late to stop you from wasting your money. As you will notice sooner or later depending upon how absolutely slow they are at processing your results, the real value of this test is only opened to you if you pay a monthly fee on top of the original purchase. For those of us that are needing to be more careful about our money the fun is over. You wait a long time and they sprinkle a bit of information and hold their hand out again looking to sell you the rest of it. Thanks but no thanks..Version: 10.26.0

SMALL FAMILY TREE CAPACITYI was having so much fun researching my family and putting them into the family tree on the app. I found that I really need the diagram to keep all of the names straight. The issue is that I have a very large family and the app won’t let me add anymore names into the tree. All that work for nothing!.Version: 11.30.0

Ugh! This is infuriatingSo I’m trying to register my kit on my 23 and me app. I received the confirmation email and clicked on it. It said that my email had been confirmed, so I go back to the app and it doesn’t do anything. I reread some of the instructions and found out that if you are using the Gmail app instead of the Mail app, the confirmation address should be copied and pasted and put into Safari. No big deal, I did that. It said that my email had been confirmed and I go back to the app once more. Finally it did something, until it said “oops something went wrong try again”. I tried this dozens of times. Every different way I could conceive of confirming my email and having it go through to the app. This has been unsuccessful. I’m not sure if it’s the app, or if it’s me, or if it’s the website. But I am not happy and I would like some help dealing with this. P.S. This hasn’t happened to just me. My dad is having the same troubles as I am..Version: 8.24.0

FrustratingIt could be so great but lately I’ve found this app more and more frustrating. When scrolling down and reading through eg paternal haplogroup information, as I pause to read it refreshes the page and sends me back to the top. Also the predicted family tree seems very poor as I have connected with my dad and yet it won’t display any of his side of the family and connections. I’ve already messaged about this but no reply. If only they can correct these problems I would probably use this app as there is a lot of good information in there..Version: 8.24.0

Refuse to refundThe company charged my husband and I for our account long after we had successfully cancelled our subscription, and refuse to refund, claiming they can’t refund anyone. Watch where you put your money.Version: 11.39.0

SatisfactoryI did my test a few years ago and whilst my French/German result has remained consistent, it still hasn't been drilled down to either or, nor have regions been identified. I have family who also have French/German results and their results further tell them which they are. Mine do not so I am tempted to go to Ancestry to get the results I need. Otherwise, a very good site and full of interesting information and the health report is excellent..Version: 11.5.0

Wrong on the hair colourI am 100% pure red hair, blond eyelashes, fair skinned and it says I am 95% chance not a red head. Makes me wonder what else they are so very wrong on?.Version: 10.10.0

New Updates Make Ancestry Less AccurateThe past couple updates at 23andMe have increasingly made the ancestry information less accurate and less informative. With each new update, it seems that although we get more detailed genetic trait information (hair type, cilantro taste, etc.), the ancestry part of this genetic test that I actually paid for and wanted information on gets dumbed down to the point of only one country and ethnicity being shown and no other information exists that used to be available. Before these updates, my ancestry information was more accurate to what is known in our family history and even included some interesting possible other ancestry and now that part of my known ancestry plus all other data, except one, was erased. 23andMe has been making a lot of improvements in their genetic traits and medical information features and that’s great but if they also continued to make improvements on their ancestry feature and not dumb it down as a result, this ancestry/genetic test company would be great and I would highly recommend to others that are curious about their ancestry and genetic traits. As of right now, I definitely would not recommend the test for ancestry and would only recommend if you’re interested in seeing your genetic traits and health information..Version: 9.13.0

Not terribly usefulYou’ll get no revelations about who you are, just random trivia about the likelihood of you having some inane phenotype. I have a 28% chance of disliking the sound of other people chewing? Great, what do I do with that?.Version: 9.24.0

Not bad but could improve some functionalityOverall it’s a good app. User friendly for the most part and a beautiful interface. That being said, it could use some improvements. There’s no actual messaging section so if you want to message a relative, you have to go to that persons profile and click message. It would be great if there was a section totally dedicated to messaging where you can access them at the same time. There’s no notification that tells you when you get a new message either. You just get an email which can get a little excessive. Also sometimes when you try to send a message, the messaging function will randomly just close out in the middle of sending a message. Same when you try to put anything in the “how can we improve this feature” section. When you try to enter cities relatives were born in it doesn’t always work. You’ll select a city and it disappears similar to how the messaging function just closes you out. There’s also A LOT OF INFO so sometimes it’s kind of hard to find your way around because some sections are sort of arbitrarily labeled. I sometimes struggle to remember how to get back to things I’m looking for. These things don’t keep me from enjoying it though. It’s just a bit frustrating and I feel they could be easily fixed. When you consider the amount of information you get in this one app, these issues are minor and I hope 23 and me will fix them in the future because it could be great..Version: 7.6.0

Ancestry resultsI have done the rest a few years ago. My ancestry results were totally different then what makes me doubt the accuracy of the test. I had 40% different ethnic backgrounds then when I checked 4 months ago after a long time. I had for example many 3 rd , 4 th Nd 5 th cousins in Italy with exact names that I could have contacted. I had 15% Italian origin and 8% Balkan as Greece and also 2% South American and many others. Now there is 0% of the above mentioned ethnicities. I asked how this is possible but did not get any convincing response besides telling me that the DNA is constantly updated. How can I get so different results from almost 30% of ethnicities that suddenly are vanished. I lost my confidence in the company..Version: 9.21.0

23 and Me app dead!?23 and Me is not responding. After opening the app and waiting only for it to crash and then watching this repeat like a sad song stuck on a single note, I decided to check for a pulse by updating the app. Still, there was no response so I pulled out a defibrillator by deleting and then reinstalling the app. After several attempts to no avail I am regretful to declare the app has died as of 28 February 2023. What can I say about 23 and Me in light of this recent tragedy? Prior to this, the app was easily worth 4.5 stars. I will miss being able to look at my ancestry and health reports. It was a nice feature to be able to find relatives through the DNA testing and comparing our results. It’s also good to be aware of any underlying health problems. I only wish I had more time to learn about these things with 23 and Me. But alas, the only thing to do now is decide what to do with it: cremation or burial?.Version: 11.17.0

Useless and obviousThis app was extremely unclear on what their capabilities are.i got this kit to learn more about generations way before me, and see what areas of the world I could have links to from centuries ago. I am Indian , from Africa, and my family history is from all over the world though badly documented. Those at 23andMe were accurately able to discern that I was from India 2 generations ago, and were incapable of finding anything further than this. All the information I got I could have got from my grandfather for free. At no point before purchasing the kit did they convey that their data relies on only samples they have already collected voluntarily from the USA, not a broader database, of which Indians at such a tiny portion that it’s obvious they would have very little data. Extremely disappointed with this, it was a complete waste of time and money. If you are not from a well documented race/group of people, this is absolutely pointless. Would not recommend..Version: 7.5.0

Payed for nothingI’ve done the 23 and me test a long time ago and the first results were correct. Then when the results kept updating everything disappeared. For example I’m part Serbian and I wouldn’t have known that if I haven’t done this test. After the first update it said that there is no evidence that I am part Serbian. I joked about being part Serbian to my uncle and he said that yes we are because our family immigrated to Romania during the war. So they got it right the first time. Now after all these updates, it just says that I’m just Greek and Romanian in which I already knew. I payed so much money to tell me that I’m just that? I’m very disappointed. Also I know I’m more that just these two ethnicities because my family did move around in the Balkan areas, so there’s more to my DNA that just being Greek and Romanian..Version: 9.46.0

-23 not meSo I feel like I’ve just open my horoscope…50/50 on this and that and most percentages just flat wrong. This is a waste of money..Version: 10.3.0

Extra features aren’t worth itI paid the extra 150$ and I just don’t feel like it’s 150$ worth of health info.Version: 11.28.0

MehThe app lags, and it’s really complicated to use in comparison to another DNA test/app I’ve taken. I tested here because I wanted haplogroup and to see if there was more info on my indigenous ancestry from Mexico as well as my African ancestry. The data wasn’t anything exciting but the app was able to match me to two of my half-sisters that I knew of, though it was nice to have the dna confirmation. I just really feel like this app is not user friendly. I have a hard time navigating. I messaged someone earlier and now I can’t find my messages. So I’m sure I’ll have to go back to Google to find them. Clicking on dna relatives takes a really long time to load — I think I have like 5000 though so that may be it. I don’t know. I just wish the tree was easier to look at and the menus for navigating were less difficult..Version: 10.2.0

Family Tree connectionsI paid a lot for the kit, including the health option. I was excited when the results were in and I could start making connections with other users that share a percentage of the same DNA. However, this is impossible because they have a limit on how many generations back you can go and how many relatives you can submit into your family tree. This is the whole reason I bought this and should have just went with ancestry. I wrote them explaining how I hadn’t even gotten to my mothers side of the tree and already ran out of space. People had a lot of kids back in the day. So to link that second cousin you pretty much have to already know them which makes this a useless feature if you’re serious about lineage. Their canned response is what prompted me to write this review. They basically said “sorry you’ve reached your max” which I knew obviously but answered no other questions. I answered every questionnaire they had 1049 questions to help with this system and improve its accuracy but I feel I was just taken for a sucker. If you want a general map of where you cane from this is fine, but if you want to map a family tree and your relatives had more than one child, don’t use 23 and me..Version: 8.35.0

Appalling customer serviceI have unfortunately deleted my 2FA authenticator app with all the entries by accident, was able to recover all of them in an automated fashion, apart from the one for these crooks. The only way they are willing to disable it is by me buying another kit! I have proven that I own all the registered emails, provided them with literally tens of clues connected to my ancestry results that only I can know (haplogroups, percentages, names of connections etc) they were only pinpointing at the one element, my date of birth wasn't matching with the one registered. Awful double dippers. Be aware if you activate 2FA..Version: 9.21.0

It's OKSince bugbear things first. Weight in reports is based on the outdated pounds that pretty much only north America uses. Rest of the world moved on to KG a long time ago. Originally I created a profile on the website then logged in via the app and it made a 2nd unwanted profile. The initial dump of information is overwhelming. But given time I'll learn. They really need a feedback feature on the website for paid members to be able to quickly and easily raise suggestions for improvement. It's like free business consultation. It's all really interesting info and tempting to get family members to buy into it. The health side of it is far more interesting than having some random fit contact me because we have all of 3% matching DNA. I think also is important that users can mark reports to be accurate or not. I find almost 50% of what the reports say about my traits are inaccurate. That's the equivalent to guessing on a multiple choice test which leaves me to question just how good is this service really!.Version: 7.20.0

HmmKind of disappointed.. I already know what colour my hair and eyes are… I guess I was hoping to learn more than that without having to pay a monthly fee..Version: 10.8.0

Use as a ToyPlease don’t use this as chiselled in stone information, but rather just a toy. My father was born is Austria, and so was his father’s father, father - you get the point ! And yet these guys say I have more Irish and only German. My mother was born in Canada and her father was born in Ireland. “ An entire DNA sample is made up of about three billion parts, but companies that provide ancestry tests look at about 700,000 of those to spot genetic differences.” So there not 100% spot on ! Enjoy the Toy..Version: 8.27.0

Check with what family?I bought 23andMe because I’m adopted, and I wanted to know my history - specifically my health risks based on my genetics. All the results tell me to “consult my family history.” I can’t; that’s why I purchased the kit!.Version: 10.9.0

Money grabbing con!I bought two kits, with full ancestry and health. Now 23andme wants us to pay extra for new features that have been introduced. These features should be part of the price already paid. My DNA is the same and already in the database, why should I pay more to find out potential life-threatening conditions? Shame on you 23andme!.Version: 9.52.1

Hi thereI have done DNA test with another famous company and was much more accurate that your recent updated one I believe that the first result was much accurate than the up dating For example my results from the other company showed 0 South Asia whic I believe was correct comparison to your latest up date one. However, I appreciate your efforts and hopefully in the near future I will get much more accurate update results. Stay safe ..Version: 9.13.0

Isle of ManNeeds to be added, all my paternal family is from there for many generations.Version: 11.26.0

Forget the bells and whistles and make something that works.I gave you three stars because my I did “receive my results” on the exact day you estimated. But I say that in quotes because honestly, I would have preferred to wait; and receive results I could actually read thru. I'm half in tears over here because it says I may be a carrier for something pretty ducking serious but. But here I am spending what's now been 20MINUTES letting the actual information page load. Pretty much the only page that will load is the one with the vaguest results. Nothing that actually sheds any light on anything works. Just little loading dots while you sit around crying and panicking if you have early onset Alzheimer’s. I just wanna read my results guys. Should be the easiest part of app development. I have more questions now then when I didn’t know anything..Version: 7.0.2

App is malfunctioningYou App is constantly showing “whoops pls try again”. As I have paid for and received your kit, unless you solve your App problems my money will have been wasted. Please rectify the fault. Viewers considering buying might wish to use another service. I read this morning that 23 and me were announcing Manu redundancies (I feel sorry for those involved), maybe one of them spiked your app? Please help.Version: 8.26.0

Potential23&Me has outstanding potential. But that’s the issue it’s just waiting to be taken further and explored. I love the predicted tree, but there’s a limit to how many you can add and there’s an issue with the design. I like the coloured line idea because it shows easily who you are and are not related to, but the way the lines all show up I often find myself tracing the wrong line when I’m looking for someone in the tree. A way you could approach this is by using the same kind of square-based portrait design that Ancestry uses, it’s a lot easier to follow. Too much of the map is on show all of the time and its difficult and time consuming to find people on your tree. To combat this you could show maybe 2 or 3 generations of direct ancestors/descendants and in any one of those generation groupings have arrows (also like ancestry and FamilySearch) for those with children meaning that the direct line is more accessible and so are their immediate families while making sure to limit the unwanted number of family on display. 23&Me has outstanding potential. But that’s the issue it’s just potential at the moment. You’ve conceptualised it now you need to realise it. Although I love Ancestry and still use it I would prefer to use 23&Me as my main hub but it’s just not there with the fine-tuning..Version: 8.33.0

No FrenchThe app is great but I bought it for my dad as well and he only speaks French! It’s ridiculous that the information is not available in French, don’t sell to places where the predominant language isn’t English if you won’t force yourself or are to cheap to offer it in the language of your customers. Also trying to get people to pay annual pricey fee just for additional information is super cheap. Do better!.Version: 11.29.0

Family treeHaving trouble entering members to my family tree. I try to enter my grandparents and and can only enter step brothers etc.Version: 10.9.0

Zionist AppDoes Palestine not exist to you? My mother and father and grandparents are all born in Palestine Territory. There was zero mention of my DNA showing this. The world wants us Palestinians erased. Be warned if you’re Arab do not trust this company..Version: 11.39.0

Update ruined itThe latest update removed any reason to purchase this product making it only provide you with top line information of the last few generations. Many people incredibly disappointed with the update with no comment from 23andme. Gone from the best to the worst DNA kit on the market, do not buy.Version: 9.2.0

Heart, cancerI had a cardiac arrest at 62 with no history of cholesterol. I have now 4 stents, high blood pressure. We have family history of heart disease, cancer. I wish we had more info on it. Why do I have to pay more yearly for that?.Version: 11.4.0

ScamBefore I paid, they confirmed that I would continue to get access to future tests for my original fixed payment. But then they created a ‘premium’ service, for which you need to pay an ongoing subscription. Now, I only receive the ‘basic’ tests, which are the least important. They were also belligerent and rude when I asked them to honour the original agreement. This experience has made me not trust them and fully regret giving them my DNA..Version: 11.31.0

Change in dna and no replyReally weird thing happened after I got my first results. A few months after my dna results (which were accurate due to me knowing my ancestry) changed with no heads-up. I sent a note to understand why and no response. Till this day I haven’t heard from the company. Reason I give 1 star is because my Germanic and French ancestry goes back multiple gens but then was eroded to something less. Looks like they just rounded up on some other info after I gave my heritage info..Version: 11.20.0

OverwhelmingI’m not sure what I’m doing must be a trait. I wish there was a better way to communicate with head office..Version: 11.28.0

May be the best option for someThe app works well, I have had no issues. I removed two stars based on changes to information received. I have the health and genetics package and spent time taking surveys that provided my health information. Unfortunately, 23 and me came out with a new more expensive package that gives health information the health package I purchased can’t receive. The greater annoyance is the new health information I don’t have access to used my survey of health information that I provided. I would give this five stars if they stayed true to the health option plan, entitling the customer continue to receive all health information. Who knows what additional fees they will come up with. To those reading this, I would strongly consider AncestryDNA (I also have that) but research 23 and me, along with their history of changes before you make the decision..Version: 9.9.0

Not what I expectedI paid for DNA and Health, information I received on DNA is no more than I already new and the health is less, if I want to know more about the health I now have to pay an annual fee.Version: 11.11.0

23andMe greedy moveI am very I pleased at the fact that 23andMe have added a premium membership. It is already an expensive thing to do, and I was always happy at the fact that they would give you new information at no additional cost. But now they have added a premium membership for 40bucks a year, and you can’t receive very important health info unless you sign up. I think that is a very greedy and unethical move on their part..Version: 10.1.0

Waste of timeReceived the kit, it invited me to download the app to register my kit. So I did. The e-mail confirmation link failed to work a couple of times, but i made it work switching from phone to desktop (not very handy). In the end, I could not register my kit because it is « app registration is not available in my region ». My region is the capital of the United Kingdom... Instead of wasting Englishmen’ time maybe update the kit to remove mentions of the app?.Version: 8.23.0

Low functionality, high styleIt’s an attractive application, but its functionality as far as user autonomy/interaction is low. There is no in-app messaging feature (so connecting/staying connected with DNA relatives is difficult). If you message a relative and they message you back, if the app doesn’t notify you that they responded (and it doesn’t always), you won’t know that person has messaged you unless you circumnavigate the labyrinth of features back to that particular user’s DNA profile. Another one of the biggest failures of this app is that it does not orient based on how you’re holding your mobile device. It only works if you’re holding your mobile device upright. So if you are using a tablet on its side, the app doesn’t adjust to that orientation. Overall, all it really does is passively allow you to absorb colorful information with your mobile device when you’re holding said device in an upright orientation. Don’t expect to be able to interact with the application or actively use any of the information with it..Version: 7.0.2

Alternative providers have to be better.Great detail on the initial report and app. However, I suspect this is aimed for the US market where most immigration has occurred in the past 200 years, as the breakdown of ‘nationality’ is quite specific within this date frame. If you are British or Irish then don’t expect any further analysis other than you are a Celtic, Saxon, Viking ‘soup’. My criticism of this company is that the DNA updates can alter your results hugely. In my case 14% German being totally replaced by 0.6% Sardinian!! I suspect that this is due to the European customer base being comparatively small which means as more people are added, their ‘algorithms’ change. If I had my £80 to spend again I would use the Ancestry. com alternative as it is the UK market leader and will give better results for this market..Version: 9.10.0

Matching ResultsMany of the outcomes of DNA do not sound familiar or match my experiences. My horoscope is more accurate and that has no scientific foundations? Did another DNA test and results are very different. App is American and very few European connections were my personal heritage is from. Meh!.Version: 8.48.0

Update and having to pay , again !For the amount I’ve paid why do I have to pay again for the updates ? Shouldn’t these just be free for the people who have already paid full price.. please don’t tell me you guys are going “subscription” on top of lying for the testing .. if so , yea I’ll just delete the app right now !.Version: 10.4.0

Racist application!!! Beware!! Discriminates against minorities...I was pretty happy when I got my 23andMe thinking this will be the most accurate way of finding out my ancestry and more about myself and my health, however, when I saw that 23andMe PURPOSEFULLY excludes Palestinian origin I was extremely appalled. As a person who always tries to see argument from the other perspective, I don’t see how denying me from my heritage is benefitting any agenda. I hope someone reads this so they can understand how unbelievably discriminatory this is from a supposedly “secular” company. “Science is about the truth, and only the truth shall set us free”.Version: 9.6.0

GreedyThey want a monthly subscription after I already payed premium for the dna results..Version: 11.3.0

Accessibility problemsNo accessibility repairs have been made in the research section and t is September 8, 2018; the first part of this review I wrote in August of 2017. I logged in using voiceover and found out I’m going to need sighted assistance again; that was needed to create my account in the first place. The reason the health survey profile questions do not speak with voiceover and the paragraphs do not speak either. I’ve already read one unuseable review on this app and I didn’t write that one. Accessibility improvements are needed here and some programmer will hae to audit this app with voiceover turned on to find all of the errors. So what do you do with a research question that asks what do you do when it has a yes or no answer attached to it for VoiceOver users? No accessibility improvements apparent with updates since I wrote the original review; this resarch question is by way of a supplement to my original review..Version: 6.11.0

BUY OUR MEMBERSHIP!!!!!Ever since they introduced their new 23AndMe+ membership program, the app is basically just one big paywall for 23AndMe+. Want to read all the news articles? Subscribe to 23AndMe+! Want to see all your relatives? Subscribe to 23AndMe+! Want to see new test results? WHY HAVEN’T YOU SUBSCRIBED TO 23ANDME+?!? Totally not cool..Version: 9.50.0

DNA is accurate but format is a messCompared to Ancestry.ca, both the website and app are a mess. Very crowded and difficult to navigate and full of bugs (the app). Though the DNA results are accurate, you constantly have to pay more for different health results, compared to Ancestry where there are two DNA kit opinions, PERIOD. Payed over 100$ to have access to traits and health, not including the original amount $ for my standard test. Only to figure out many of those traits required an additional 39$ membership. Wow..Version: 10.26.0

An utter waste of moneyI’m not reviewing the app here, I’m reviewing 23andMe. And as per the title, it is a complete waste of time and money. A family member of mine as spent the last 15/18 years researching our family history/bloodline and heritage, and 23andMe hasn’t hit or found a single one of the people or given me ANY information that matches what my family member has found out, and yes I trust the information they have researched over the nonsense 23andMe have rustled up! Don’t waste your time, money or data. Do the research yourself, it’ll be way more fun and a whole lot more accurate!.Version: 11.30.0

Hard to loginI tried to login with my email but it wouldn’t let me!.Version: 11.8.1

DisappointingAs part of a discussion with my husband we decided to get our DNA tested. I was really excited to use 23andme because I'm adopted and wanted the health reports since I didn't have that information. My husband on the other hand opted for Ancestry and we have been debating on which service is better. I've been trying to defend 23andme since I know that it's a fairly new company and I do think you started the edge with the health reports. But now other companies offer health reports so it doesn't make it so competitive anymore. It's also extremely disappointing that you can sell users information to drug companies but cannot update their profiles regularly. My husband's DNA on the other hand is updated every three months with Ancestry. I do hope with the money you received from selling your users information, you can further your databases because if I'm being honest I'm close to just getting Ancestry. It'd be enjoyable to actually get valid and consice information about your DNA.Version: 8.23.0
