Steam: Rails to Riches for Positive User Reviews

Great for a quick gameI've been playing Steam and Age of Steam since it first arrived as a board game and love it It's not always possible to find friends with a few spare hours so this app fits the bill admirably. No pieces to set up and put away, this is ideal for a quick fix. Plenty of maps add to its variety, and some of the later AI opponents play a mean game!.Version: 2.2

Great, but a little rough around the edgesFirst of all, the core experience is great. Good presentation and artwork, great gameplay with no bugs or glitches. There are a few things that could be improved though... •The initial download takes a while, and you can't exit the app while it takes place. Took an hour or so on LTE in North Atlanta. •The app doesn't even multitask on the iPhone, which is bonkers. But with the game saving your progress after every move it's an annoyance, not a deal breaker. •The game manual is a link to a PDF instead of built into the game. •Tile placement can be a little bit finicky. In summary, if you really want this game, go ahead and buy it. If you're not totally sure, waiting for the first major update is completely reasonable..Version: 1.0

A Good Work In ProgressInitially the servers were swamped as the first surge of buyers clamoured to download the maps simultaneously. Now the maps and extras download (on a moderately fast connection) within a minute. The music is quite good and with a few different tunes. they didn't have me reaching for mute button as some games do. I don't have a real world 'paper' copy of the game so I'm still learning how the game plays but it all some quite slick. The designers have stated that more features will be added soon and more maps can be purchased soon that should help extend the game's pad-life..Version: 1.0

Board Game Goodness! This is a faithful adaptation of the board game by Martin Wallace. Steam is a slightly streamlined adaptation of the classic game Age of Steam. There is a very basic version and then the standard version which includes bidding for turn order and bonus actions. It’s a great little thinky game and you can get through a match pretty quick on the app against the AI. The puzzle changes each time you play as the cubes available change colours at set-up, requiring different long term and short term planning each game. The artwork looks identical to the tiles and boards in the board game from Mayfair..Version: 3.3.1

Excellent implementation!Great app version of this game! I've heard some say the AI is too easy. I'm still having trouble beating it, but I'm relatively new to the game..Version: 2.2

Love the game, iOS version has flawsSteam is one of my all-time favorite games. But: the iOS version has a couple flaws. The first is that track laying is fiddly. If you don’t drag the track just right, the game complains and doesn’t give you a chance to correct it. Second is that the AI is *very* disappointing..Version: 1.1

Solid gameThis is a good representation of the Steam board game. The game play is solid and the maps look like the original board game. There are a few issues with it freezing occasionally but I like the game and hopefully with time those can be fixed. Worth trying..Version: 1.0

Not impressed so far. Unable to load on iPad Air.Continued "404 unable to connect to Internet" While connected......Version: 1.0

Ride The RailsThis game surprised me as to how good it is. As a fan of Carcassonne, Steam is like a distant cousin with trains and merchandise. I enjoy it so much I bought all the expansions when they went on sale. Good stuff!.Version: 3.0.1

Bug report NE mapLatest map, Northern England, will not allow user to complete Urbanization action. Cannot then continue. Also, feedback link won't work either..Version: 2.2

Well done and engrossingStrategic yet relaxing train game. Colorful graphics and nice background music. The additional map to purchase is cool. A definite for fans of Age of Steam or Railroad Tycoon..Version: 1.1

Great gameOne of my favorite board games ever turned into a wonderful app. There are a few bugs and still waiting on the online play but overall this is a must own..Version: 2.2

Great game but a few bugsWorks fine on iPhone 6 but probably best on iPads. As others pointed out, the tutorial has a bug and can't be completed. I played 4 games but couldn't finish the last one due to a bug (old graphics suddenly got loaded and I couldn't complete the unloading of my train). Great game, well balanced, and good enough graphics..Version: 2.1

The board game is magnificent. The application is acceptable. What a great, great Wallace board game this is. Truly fabulous. The app implementation has some issues. Purchases on one device do not automatically show up on another; there are rare but occasional hangs, but the brilliance of the underlying game overcomes these flaws..Version: 1.0

Great app and great game!!!!!This is a great version of the game and they did a wonderful job. The updated version takes care a lot of the flaws from the first..Version: 1.1

Incredible Game! After they fixed some of the release problems, this game is awesome! A very good strategic railroad game. This is an excellent port of the board game..Version: 1.0

Crashes instantly - seems to be a temp issueGame is unplayable. It attempts to download your initial map but gets an http404 error and then quits. Wherever they are storing their map is down. 1 star for crappy delivery and inability to play. It is my hope this is just temporary and will be resolved soon. Update. Next day, map downloaded in 3 seconds. No issues, no crashes. This app just had a very bad first day. Don't let the first day reviews scare you. I changed my rating from 1 star to four. It is now working great..Version: 1.0

Updated- MUCH better.Issues corrected. Plays very well now. Highly recommend. *old review* Takes several hours to download resources for the game, and if your device goes to sleep in the process, you're back to square one. Wait for an update before purchasing. Unplayable at the moment..Version: 1.0

Love it. More maps please. As a board game lover and someone who appreciates a good strategy game, this one rocks. If you like Ticket to Ride, Catan, or any of the all time greats, this is for you. Only complaint is a couple of bugs but nothing major and I want more maps as soon as possible. Download this game, take the time to understand the rules, and you will not regret it. Oh, and I never do reviews so that should tell you something..Version: 2.2

Good gameI'm really enjoying this game, up there with ticket to ride..Version: 1.0

One of the best board game implementations on iPadWith the release of version 2, Steam: Rail to Riches has matured into an excellent iOS game. The various AI persona provide real challenges and approach the game with different strategies. The game plays quickly and is always a great experience. Can't wait for the next version with online multiplayer..Version: 2.0

Download TimesThe download time issue was only there for the first hours the game was available on the iTunes store. The download is now nearly instantaneous and the game works perfectly. It deserves 5 stars....Version: 1.0

Great titleI have never played the board game version of this game but I can tell the mechanics will transfer very easily. I got this app to practice for a Euro-League I joined recently and I can't wait to put my practice to the test!.Version: 1.1

Looks great so farThis loaded fine for me, including the map and the rules pdf, so apparently whatever issues they were having at launch have been resolved. The graphics look great and the UI is polished and intuitive. And (hooray!) they included a colorblind-friendly graphics setting, a huge improvement over the original cardboard game. It remains to be seen whether the AI plays well, and there are still a number of features waiting for a future release. But so far this seems to be a worthy addition to the IOS board game genre..Version: 1.0

As Good as it GetsThis iPad version of Steam is every bit as good as the physical game and the AI is very competitive. Definitely worth your money..Version: 3.2.2

Missing one key feature. This game is almost a perfect port but is missing one very important feature...... The ability to see what other players did on their turn e.g. What track they built and what goods they moved. Please update for the perf cat experience..Version: 3.0.1

Great implementation of a great board gameNot much more to say that that..Version: 3.2.2

Enjoyable GameI recently bought this game. I wasn’t going to because of so many bad reviews. But surprisingly it was really enjoyable once I learned how to play. I must admit the tutorial does need some work as I had to watch a YouTube video on how to play the game. But once I did watch the video, I picked up the game very quickly and had fun playing against the computer. It’s not perfect but still fun to play..Version: 3.2.2

Great game - minor bugsThis is a brilliant implementation of Steam, now played about 20 times. However, a couple of problems. First if one of the players goes bankrupt, the game locks up. Second, you have to use undo button to cancel placing a city, you can't just slide it back on the pile, otherwise you get a random city tile covering te track tiles in later turns..Version: 1.1

Finally--Steam!I own the board game but have never played. After playing 3 games of this implementation, I'll twist arms to play the board game! Really enjoying this version. Looking forward to playing others online and buying expansions. Plays very smoothly..Version: 1.0

Excellent adaptation from classic board gameThe game does a great job at bringing Steam to the iPad. Excellent interface, strong AI, graphics taken from the original and a decent music. I did not have any issues with the map download, looks like that happened early after the release only. Special thanks for the colourblind setting..Version: 1.1

Very good adaptation:-).Version: 1.0

Some IssuesThe first time I started the app, it hung on loading for over an hour until I killed it. The second time I started it, it loaded fairly quickly. I downloaded the 4-5 player map, and that got hung too. Again I had to kill the app start it up again to resolve the issue. Once past these issues, it worked great. AI modes seem to work well. One note: This game only has the Standard game rules. It needs the option of the Basic game rules mode that is available in the board game. It would help new players to the game learn it easier and would give experienced players an option..Version: 1.0

Great Board Game AdaptationI bought this sight unseen because I heard about it on a podcast called Ludology. This is a fun strategy game!.Version: 2.2

Wonderful app. May purchase the cardboard copy now.I haven't played a train game since Euro-rail crayon game back ages ago. I have always enjoyed Railroad tycoon video game. This one interested me from Suz review on board game breakfast. Not familiar with the board game but I enjoyed this app..Version: 1.1

A fitting entry to the Steam line of gamesI got this as an intro to Steam like games and have been bitten by the bug. The AI is not the best but gives a good grounding in the basic tactics. I’ve found a physical copy of the game for sale and will head out to get it for my game group next week. Maps are a bit overpriced for mine so will wait for physical to get more maps..Version: 3.3.7

Great gameIt took a while to download the maps the first night, but now the app works great. The app has the standard version of the game but not the basic version..Version: 1.0

Great game! This is a well made game. There were problems at launch but the developer has fixed them. Strongly recommend. The game does online play well also (it lets you know when it is your turn and it is easy to invite others to play)..Version: 3.1

Good game, some app flawsYes, it does download the map after first install... Annoying but only a one off. Yes it's a bit if cheek to only give one map and charge for the other when the app is 4.99. Getting past those issues, this is an excellent boardgame and the app is a good stab at bringing it to iPad. In summary, the premise of this game is to build a rail network and ship goods to earn Victory Points. On the way to that goal, one must consider taking loans, the optimal way to build rails and where to ship goods while trying to block the plans of (or perhaps work with) your opponents. There are a few bugs ( occasionally I got a track piece stuck on screen) but nothing game breaking. For v1 it's ok. The UI is functional enough giving the number of elements to consider. I hope they reconsider the board pricing or at least offer further boards at no further cost..Version: 1.0
