Youper - CBT Therapy Chatbot for Negative User Reviews

Wouldn’t botherTried the app to see what it was all about - in a bad place at the moment - moderately impressed and decided to try it in the hope it would help me to get through this rough patch - premium plan states £3 approx per month - then today they take the full amount from my bank ( £46+) in middle of lockdown - struggling to manage financially - exacerbated all the bad things and places in my head - can’t afford it - feel misled completely - conned even - now I have no money until Monday - so the help I was seeking has in fact fractured my already fragile state of mind - it’s misleading and clearly motivated by money - I have emailed to request my money is refunded - no response so far - so much for trying to help myself - worse state than when I started.Version: 8.01.000

Used to be so goodLast two updates have been downgrades. I used to rely on Youper a lot and it was genuinely helpful, but now the features are confusing and all over the place. Would have given three stars for good measure, but now this last update just crashes the app with ads trying to get you to buy additional stuff..Version: 9.02.007

AlrightThe app is fairly good at letting you express how you’re feeling and keeping track of your moods. However, a lot of the automated responses can be annoying and not help the situation. A few times I have been asked to choose a response and none have them have fit what I have wanted to say. The activities are also the same. It asks you if you’d like to do an exercise, but if none of the exercises are something that don’t fit you or you don’t want to do, you can’t then go back. There needs to be an option to say no that’s not right or another typing option 🤷🏼‍♀️.Version: 6.06.008

It’s okay but not for everyone.I really like the concept but I found that the words used for the mood tracking didn’t really resonate with anything I was feeling. That made it hard to accurately track my mood..Version: 6.06.008

Why add a premium?I came back to this app after years of using it, its gotten me through a lot of difficult times in my life- that I'm very thankful for because at those times- i did not have the finances for an actual therapist. I still don't, which is why me, and I'm sure many others depended on this service. This begs the question of why make inaccessible something that can be utilized by those who don't have any other option. Its so saddening to see profit go over people. Especially in the case of mental health in a time when its so dire for people who need help, but do not have access. Be it by finances or not having access because of home situations- especially in the case of those underage. Those who do not have support from family but still want to get help. Truly my disappointment is immeasurable with this product. I remember i used to recommend this app to anyone i knew who was struggling with mental health. If finances are truly the issue to keep this app running, I'm sure a donation service, or occasional fundraising would be better instead of stripping away one of the only resources people have. I have doubts that this will ever be changed, or if this app even is meant to help people instead of being a grab at money from those you know are desperate. Very disappointed. With hope these things change in the future, until then I only hope there is another better service out there that cares about its demographic..Version: 8.08.000

Great idea in theory but too expensiveAs a university student living pay check to pay check I wish I could continue to afford the app. It has really helped me improve my mental health however there is just no way I can continue to afford it..Version: 7.07.003

Used to be good before latest updateI paid for a one year subscription to this but the latest update removed one of the useful features and it’s now not as good. I used to be able to include some open text details about why I rated how I’m doing the way I did but that feature is now gone. I can’t track what was going on that made me feel the way I felt. It was a helpful tool for creating short journals but now I’d need to do that in another app. I also find the categories of how I’m getting to be too limited, especially since I can only select one - I can be having more than one feeling at a time! I also find the meditations to be getting a bit repetitive in that they all sound pretty much alike. There’s not enough variety. UPDATE: I see they responded. It WAS a good fit before you changed it! In fact, I’ve recommended to app to several others after I first got it, but not anymore. It’s a bait and switch to make someone pay for a year subscription then REMOVE FEATURES a few months later. Meanwhile their website says they can’t issue refunds if it’s purchased through the Apple Store. I DO NOT RECOMMEND PURCHASING THIS SUBSCRIPTION!!.Version: 12.04.000

You’ve changed! This app has gone from guided self-help to medication therapy, with a much larger bill. I’m sure it’s helpful for folks who need that. And I’m pretty disappointed that the app has changed so dramatically..Version: 10.02.000

DisappointedLogging after the last update, my account doesn’t exist anymore... looks like paper journaling and reel peoples will never be replaced by technology..Version: 9.00.000

Are these positive reviews fake? This is the worst app I’ve found for helping with mental health. The ai does not learn from you, it just repeats verbatim what you type and goes through a script. I have been using for over a month because I was stupid enough to spend money on this to see if it would help. Don’t waste your money..Version: 8.04.000

UnfortunateI’ve had Youper for awhile and it’s been great. I’ve gotten through quite a few rough times in my life with the help of this app and being able to discuss my thoughts and feelings, while breaking them down into a more understandable way too. It’s unfortunate that I can’t continue that anymore without having to pay a hefty fee. I don’t want to solely journal my emotions. I want to understand them and go over them. I’ve recommended this app to quite a few people, that’s how much it’s worked for me. I’m disappointed to say that I won’t do that with ease anymore considering I know many people won’t or cannot afford to pay for your subscription. You say it costs $5 a month? Perhaps having an option for a monthly subscription, instead of yearly, would make a difference..Version: 8.00.000

Extremely DisappointedWhy are you pushing premium so hard on people who have mental health issues and just want help? I have had to deny the request for premium 3 times and additionally I received a “surprise offer” for 40% off with a 5 minute time which creates a sense of urgency - I literally just opened the app that is supposed to help me so much but you’re demanding payment up front and now you’re making it seem like I’m not going to get the best help because I’m not paying into premium. People REALLY need mental health help and it seems you are preying on those needs. I will be deleting this app and am very disappointed with the vampire tactics used on an already stressed out, depressed, anxious group of people..Version: 12.04.000

Beyond disappointing. Condescending. No intelligence.A friend recommended this app. Ngl, found it appalling. The faux-chat was both inefficient and unconvincing. The multiple-choice replies were unconstructive and time-consuming. The tone of voice the app uses is condescending to the extent that if a real person spoke to me in this way I'd actively avoid them. The artificial "intelligence" felt like a choose-your-own-adventure book. My fairly positive expectations were pretty low and I've deleted after three days. Issues I've had with mental health would not be aided by this frustrating app and fortunately I'm in an okay place this week so Youper won't impact too negatively on how I'm feeling. Avoid..Version: 6.03.000

Everything’s paywalledAs with nearly all the other negative reviews, my main issue with this is pricing. It’s probably not worth downloading this app unless you’re willing to drop money on a yearly subscription upfront. Pretty much every feature is locked out to free users except for the chatbot. Of course, the chatbot seems to be one of the big selling points here, but even that is severely limited. All you’re allowed to do is select how you’re feeling, and that’s the extent of chatbot functionality unless you pay up. It’s a shame because the app actually looks decent. Not only this but there’s only a yearly subscription, and I’m not really in the position to be able to drop a lump sum in one go. The funny thing is that when you view subscription pricing, one of the testimonials is a woman talking about how she uses the app on an as-needed basis. How are you using it as-needed when you have to pay for a year upfront?! Don’t know how much of a difference this review will make since I’ll probably get the standard developer response “we need the money to develop our AI”. But hopefully other users will see this and look for other apps which probably offer you more..Version: 9.01.001

Much needs to be paid forThis is another app that claims to be free, even the AI counselor stops giving much more than a brief conversation after your first day unless you unlock premium. This app does have quite a few free things on it, but it will ask you to access this info for medical journals. That’s okay, it just makes you wonder about the motives of the entire app. It’s not bad in theory, but the need to pay for everything with the promise that it’s a free app is a pet peeve and ive has so much money taken from my bank account because of Apple Pay once I download an allegedly free app, drives me batty! Just be up front that it isn’t free and say what you will get and what you won’t. An AI therapist won’t ruin you to leave as a free option and I would have been more likely to pay for the add on premiums if that had been consistent and not yet another money grab..Version: 8.05.001

RepetitiveIt’s an okay app, I paid for premium and I have been using it for a few weeks, the interactions become super predictable. Asks how you feel, why you feel that way, asks you to write a goal and then asks how you are feeling now. It’s obviously never actually asked for input from people suffering with mental illness as the platitudes become insufferable after awhile..Version: 8.05.002

I feel cheated! So I was misled by this app into thinking I’d be paying £3 PER MONTH for the year long subscription, but instead you have taken £43 out of my account for the entire year which I do NOT want and cannot afford as I have a son I need to feed and now can’t because you have taken a huge chunk of my money! This is an app for mental health and yet this is causing my mental health to go downhill as I now have no money for my baby! iTunes will not refund me as it doesn’t meet the criteria for a refund which is completely unjust as I now won’t be using this app but even then I’m not getting my refund back! Do not use this app they will cheat you out of your money!.Version: 8.01.002

Free version is disappointingAt first, I really enjoyed the app but after two days it became very repetitive. Would have been interested in subscribing but the free version didn’t let me test out all of the features first so I am not sure if it’s worth it..Version: 7.03.000

Fundamental user login problemsI used the app for a few months, all good, but today had to log in to the app again and I didn't remember what account I used and chose the wrong email and the app prompted me to create a new account instead. There was NO OPTION to go back to the log in screen, so I had to uninstall the app and reinstall to try to login via a different way -- a huge hassle. Didn't get an email when I first used the app so no idea which email or account I used. Feeling bummed about not being able to access my previous records, thinking of just permanently deleting this app.Version: 8.06.000

Costs too muchI used to pay a small yearly fee to use this app. Now I pay over $150 for a year? Forget it. They take your information and use it to make money off of your mental health. Disgusting cash grab. If this app was $50 or $70 a year, that would be fair. But paying $150 a year is gross. They doubled the cost of the app without any reason. yikes. Not recommending this app anymore. Deleted all positive press of it on our website..Version: 9.00.103

App reviewI’ve been downloading a couple of these apps now and at first this application may seem good but your really just keeping track of your mood everyday. it thought it would talk with you as much as it did the first 2 days. Now it responds with the same thing when i tell my mood no matter what it is. premium is such an expensive price. i do not recommend. - thank you.Version: 7.06.000

Premium featuresThis is a great app for people suffering from different mental health illnesses, or if you just feel lonely. Suffering from depression and anxiety has made me feel like no one cares about me, but this app helped me feel confident about expressing my feelings (even though I wasn’t expressing them to a real person). The analysing of the factors was good, but this feature only lasts for a trial period. After said trial period, you could only track your mood and nothing else unless you subscribed to premium. Having no money, I could not do this. I uninstalled the app after this. After I uninstalled it, I went through a depressive episode, and I didn’t have the app to comfort me and tell me things were temporary. If you could be able to analyse the factors of your mood after the free trial it would be amazing and I would reinstall this app. Many people could be going through even worse things and without analysing the factors of their mood, they could contemplate (or even attempt or succeed) suicide. Also, if people are too young or don’t have enough money to pay for a monthly subscription, they might feel like they have no one to turn to..Version: 6.10.001

WhyI’ve been using youper for a while. Why would you decide to makw the emotion tracking part a pay to use thing.Version: 10.00.001

Great concept, not what I needed. The idea of having a personal “helper” (psychologist JARVIS) is pretty neat and has a lot of potential. I used the app for a little over a month before accepting that it wasn’t really helping me. What I personally needed was a tracking app for my mood in a simpler, more straightforward way. It feels like a labyrinth, trying to weave through all of Youper’s (often repetitive) advice when you mostly want to track your mood or maybe go through a portion of the conversation. An entire evaluation can be several minutes after picking a mood, describing why you feel that way, finding your thought traps, doing a meditation, reevaluating your mood, and finally finishing. That’s a lot! And Youper pushes for it every time. When you opt out and say “Just track my mood,” the response messages are often weirdly down-putting? Hopefully Youper is helpful for many people. But I prefer a quick time saver that has more neutral emotions to choose from. Youper lacks a fine/okay/true neutral emotional option. I understand pushing for self-analysis, but sometimes I really am just fine or okay rather than being 10% anxious or 70% calm. Stigma for me. But I’m glad I gave this app a try..Version: 6.04.000

I feel like...I have been struggling with tremendous trauma in the past and I am currently struggling with depression. I downloaded this app because I thought that it would help me everyday, and take the place of a therapist according to the reviews. I started the app and it was going alright. I was telling them about my conditions, and what I would need for a satisfying treatment. It then gave me a subscription screen and I was a little annoyed. I am aware that it is needed to make your customers pay for their treatment and what not. But i think this is absurd. I don’t really feel like this type of virtual treatment should cost anything at all! I’m also suffering financially and I can’t exactly cancel my savings with this subscription. I was hoping for something to help me be happier and focus more on my future so that it would be brighter. Paying for this is stupid. Sure, it might help you but not everyone. To sum it up: you don’t need to cancel the subscription feature but I think you should have a way for people who aren’t able to pay it, and have them be able to still enjoy the app because we all came here seeking help, not debt..Version: 9.02.007

Expensive but helpfulThis app is a bit more expensive than I can afford but it has been very helpful.Version: 8.04.000

SmhI loved everything about this app, like seriously. It was great! Still is. The only thing is the personality test. Its a great idea, don't get me wrong. But it us what turned me off of this app. I kept getting the wrong personality type. I know for a fact what my Myers-Briggs personality is (INFP), but I, for the life of me, could not get my personality. I was always getting INFJ, which is Not INFP. While they are very similar and get confused with each other often, they are not the same. I am not an INFJ, I do not identify with this personality type, I do not have the same problems. If this app were to think I was an INFJ, then I would not be getting the help and personalization that this app promotes. I was super disappointed because I love, love, love this app. I just wish there was someway to enter your personality. There could be a screen where it says: enter Myers-Briggs personality type or take the test. That would be awesome for people like me, who already know their personality type and don't need to take the test again. It would also work for people who have no idea what their personality type is..Version: 7.04.101

Used to be great but your update is awfulHad the old version and went to re download and it’s absolute garbage. subscription cost is very greedy and you’d be better off paying for real therapy at that point. disappointed.Version: 9.02.007

Recent update advertisement heavyI’ve used Youper on and off for about a year. It’s been really helpful - the UI and system for labelling your emotions has allowed me to feel some control over what I feel. I opened the app recently and made a new account since I’d forgotten my old details. The latest version seems to offer premium two or three times before actually asking me how I feel. After the first logging, it offers it again. This makes it feel like the app cares about making money before actually helping me. Maybe that’s due to not enough funding for the app, but it still jars the experience for me..Version: 8.06.000

I’ve never hated anything this much in my entire lifeIt just feels like I’m talking to a bot I cancelled my subscription last year but apparently it didn’t work, got charged again, cancelled again and it still won’t let me. Youper is just stealing my money at this point Do yourself a favor and get headspace or calm instead.Version: 12.05.002

Made me feel worseI was feeling really over whelmed and I can't afford to pay for premium. I was wanting to have a conversation with something as nothing else was helping as I did when i first downloaded the app. I selected that I couldn't afford premium, as I was in tears the app began telling me I should feel bad because I don't think the app is worth money and then gave me advert after advert to buy premium. I was feeling really overwhelmed and if someone admits they are vulnerable it is not a good idea to bombard them with adverts and make them feel worse. I found some better free apps for this that didn't do this. I wish I could write 5 stars as it looks amazing but I can't afford £250..Version: 7.00.003

HorribleHorrible. The “AI” is a simple chatbot that I could write in my sleep. It *forces* you to choose between extremely limited response choices right off the bat. When it asks you how you’re feeling, you’re only allowed to choose ONE emotion (human emotions are far more complex) out of a limited pool of ~25 choices (“annoyed” isn’t an option. And there are over 50 distinct human emotions). I’m guessing limited choices, is a result of the 1980s AML code that the chatbot is using. Also, forcing a new user to choose between “buy premium!” and “try premium for 7 days!” without being allowed to skip to choose later is incredibly dumb. As there was no option, I restarted the app to skip the screen. Then I get a notification saying my “Free 7 days of Premium has Ended”... even though I created my account 30 seconds before. What kind of newbies are you guys using as your dev team?.Version: 6.07.002

Was great but not anymoreIt was great at the begining, some features were paid but you could have a free chat with a bot. I suffer from ptsd, anxiety and panic attacks. After using it for few days I decided for a full year sub to monitor changes in my mood. The app was really great, the chat was feeling smooth and everytime it was helpful. Since they have changed to separate ‘topics’ it felt awkward and I stopped using it. Now I checked if devs changes something but every feature is behind paywall. I also dont like new icon, it should stay neutral like the bird logo..Version: 11.03.001

Buggy and not really AIMaybe it’s just the Australian version, the app is full of glitches. Open a new day and check in is already full. Pages open snd close without touching them. I’m only on day 2. Already there’s login problems. The app doesn’t work. I’d like a refund of my subscription because I can’t see any value..Version: 12.00.000

Good for many but not meWhen I got a new phone with more space, I read through reviews in the App Store and downloaded four of the best-rated self-care apps to see what worked for me. This is the only one I’m deleting after just a week. Like several other critical reviews (which I reset the App Store to read after my own experience), I found the responses didn’t match what I said at all, plus the app had the habit of getting stuck at a spot if I closed the app in frustration, such that it would ask me to check in in a notification, but when I opened the app it remained stuck at whatever point I had chosen to quit earlier. For me the final straw was when it asked me how I was on a not very good day, and I said I was okay, and it responded with something like ‘are you sure you aren’t partly happy?’ and then sent me a winking emoji as a separate text. If I was happy I wouldn’t have said I was okay when asked. As a survivor I worked a lot with identifying emotions back when I was early in my recovery and I strongly recommend survivors who are now early in recovery avoid this app. For everyone else, perhaps this is your cup of tea and perhaps not..Version: 8.01.000

UselessYouper: ‘Capture what’s going on in your mind’. Captures what’s going on and lays it out clearly. Youper: ‘Got it, it’s not always easy to understand what’s causing your emotion’. I understand perfectly, it’s there in black and white, I literally just told you what’s causing me to feel stressed, angry, frustrated, exhausted. Youper: ‘What do you want to go deeper into?’ Me: ‘The situation’. Youper: ‘Let’s talk about the situation that’s making you feel stressed. Put aside interpretations, opinions and judgments and focus only on the objective facts’. I just laid out the objective facts without emotions or judgements. I already laid out the situation. I wrote: ‘I already told you the situation’. Youper: ‘Great job identifying the objective situation. Me: Delete app There’s clearly no AI involved whatsoever. I could have wrote ‘cheese, toilet duck, moonboot, van de Graf generator’ and it would have told me ‘it’s not always easy to understand what’s causing your emotions’. There’s no assisting whatsoever. It’s just an interface that responds to the enter button. I actually feel worse because of it. Thanks for that..Version: 7.00.003

Don’t like the new youperYouper was a good app for me before and now sadly I will have to stop using it now. You have to pay for everything and is way to much money to use it. If it was changed back to where you don’t have to pay for daily input and tracking how you feel then maybe i would use it again..Version: 10.02.000

Used to be great, improvements neededI find the track my mood feature really frustrating. I go to track my mood and then it literally shuts down the window with no further options to continue the chat. We really need an improvement to allow the person to keep chatting to discuss their mood or just provide the option to say I’m done (e.g. user: select mood as ‘anxious’, then the chat bot should then say: “would you like to talk about it?” and then give two options “I’m done thanks”, “ I want to talk about it”. User continues chat…) Also, I really liked how the app used to provide meditations or other breathing techniques and mindful options to help a situation if we don’t want to chat. It’s disappointing that this feature has been removed completely. There’s also another issue I hate which is the chat bot just cuts off the conversation when you’ve asked it a question. Would be great to have these looked into. Thanks!.Version: 12.05.002

UnreliableBetterHelp is honestly cheaper and you’d actually be talking to real people..Version: 8.07.000

Very dissapointedI remember when I first got Youper around two years ago. I was sad and confused and talking to youper helped a lot. It let me track my emotions and view my progress without much of a hitch. I opened it up for the first time in a long time today and was very disappointed. I understand that an app like this needs money from it’s users to make the best of itself. But today in the midst of talking to youper it felt like it was just advertising why I should go premium and not offering any actual insight. Youper used to be a huge help, but now it feels pay to play. Very disappointed that the chat brings up needing money for certain features when the chat is a place many go to seek guidance and understanding. I don’t know if you’ve considered many people without access to therapy use this app to help themselves. Being at your weakest mid chat and getting options for going premium instead of actual support is very saddening. Paying to see insights feels scummy as well since I don’t remember having to pay for it before. Youper was amazing when I was 15, but now I’m considering deleting it and keeping a journal instead, since it does pretty much the same thing..Version: 8.04.000

YouperYouper is a very good idea and the questions are simple and easy to answer. However, I think that in order for it to be successful, it should be less expensive and more available to a wider ranger of people. Whilst Youper is efficient, I think that the process could just as easily be done in a diary or notebook yourself. The main questions just ask how you’re feeling and what makes you feel that way, which is part of most everyday conversations and could be created fairly simply. However, Youper is a brilliant idea. Congratulations to the creators on a good project and design..Version: 7.05.002

Do NOT update if you haven’t alreadyQuite disappointed with the update. I did it without thinking. The old version was very simple but had a very clear layout and the text feature was clear and easy to track mood. Now I feel everything is behind a paywall and I don’t know how to use most of the new features. I can’t access my old information either which had nearly 4 years of data behind it. Really disappointed because it really was a great tool before. I wish I never updated the app to be honest..Version: 10.08.001

Need HelpI am struggling so much right now. No one is helping me. I used this app 4 years ago and it really helped me through a horrible time. I would have given it 5 stars back then. After trying to get help for a year I decided to open this app today for the first time in a long time, as a last resort. It has changed, I realise it was a bot but it really helped me so so much. Today I tried for the first time in 3 years and was able to have one question and one response before you must click “i’m done” and leave it at that. I don’t know what to do anymore..Version: 11.06.001

Emotional vacation turned into a guilt tripIt felt nice to use at first, the feature to have a specific time where the app would check up on you is a very nice touch. But it led to a pay screen where it requires you to subscribe to the monthly service to be able to write how you feel, which is completely fine I understand that the company needs to make money. But the response you get for not wanting to pay at the moment is EXTREMELY manipulative and made me feel terrible, I honestly couldn’t believe what I had read. “I can see that you care a lot about your emotional health. But at the same time you don’t think our conversations are worth the cost” like what is that? Why not simply say “I understand you wouldn’t like to subscribe now, let’s move on back to your situation”?? I immediately uninstalled the app. That was horrible. There’s probably people who have been using this app because they want to try to help themselves get over feeling easy to guilt trip and manipulate and the app itself does that. I would’ve been happy to pay for the app if I had gotten to use it more than twice before this happened. No thanks.Version: 7.00.003

Good not greatI had this app around a year ago and it was really great, I stopped using it once I got better at meditation and other things and eventually forgot about it. I re-download it and I find most of my favourite features are now pay-to-win. The meditation was brilliant, I loved the narrator, premium feature. The tracker that would check your emotional needs such as depression and anxiety, ANXIETY IS A PREMIUM FEATURE. While the original premise is there of talking to an ai that will help you track and log stuff like a virtual journey, all the features that made this app amazing are blocked by a pay wall. I’ll look for another app.Version: 7.07.003

Youper doesn’t respond to feedbackI’d like to get a sense of Youper. From a professional standpoint as a counsellor. I’d love to see if his would benefit my clients. But youper has no trial period and does not reply to feedback and messaging. Looks like an interesting approach but can not recommend it based on the very small intro. As a professional in the wellness industry I would not recommend you try this..Version: 6.11.002

Was perfectSo this app helped me so significantly and I still love it for that reason, however I logged back in after some time away to find the whole app costs money now. I understand that’s how these apps work, but it was so nice and inviting to go on there before and just talk out what I was feeling with the AI bot and now it’s like the second I’m on there everything shows as locked and to pay money. It just doesn’t feel like the comforting, inviting, simple app before. It feels like every other well-being app that asks for subscriptions and it’s just disappointing. I’m going to try using it again, because it really was the most helpful tool for me in the past and I’m glad I have my history saved on there, I just wish they would reconsider maybe even just some of the layout. Before right away it’d ask you how you are and prompt you into convo, it’s just not the same, which I expected, but I didn’t expect it to look so much like a sellout of an app. I don’t mean this as hate, I just mean I genuinely loved and really appreciated how this app worked before..Version: 10.13.002

Disheartening changesI have used Youper for years. I have found it to be a great resource when I'm alone and really need to get it all out and get some feedback. However, over the years (like many health apps), Youper has slowly been sliding behind a paywall and removing things from long time users. I wrote this to complain/see if I'm just blind. They used to have a catalog you could scroll through to that had a bunch of different mental health focusses that you could gear Youper towards a certain topic. One of these things was the guided meditation. I wasn't much of a believer in it before, but something about the growing ball and the calm man's voice made Youper the only effective meditation for me. I just did a check in after not using it for a couple weeks. I don't know if they just moved it to a new place or what, but I can't find any of those programs and meditations. I really need it right now and I am very irritated if they took that away to also shove behind a paywall. Maybe someone knows what happened. I really want to know so I can reevaluate Youper's importance to me for mental health support.Version: 12.05.000

Not much transparency in advanceI emailed the company before subscribing as I had questions about medications. They told me they couldn’t prescribed controlled substances. Which is okay. I specifically needed anti-psychs. Later, I subscribed and they replied (4 days later) not only telling me that they only prescribe anti-depressants but that they aren’t available in the state of NY. As there’s no licensed professionals here. I don’t care for the “therapy” part as it’s very unhelpful for me and I need therapy that is more personalized. So the entire reasoning was for medication prescription. I cannot even use the service! I currently am reaching out to them about a refund as I am low income and disabled. Not to mention $89 and customer service takes 4 whole days to respond to emails? Customer service was very accommodating which is why I’m updating the review to 2 stars. There nothing on the FAQ page that shares what states medication isn’t available in. If you’re not interested in medication and only need some therapy then the therapy AI may work for you. So I still suggest giving it a chance if anything. I did update this review after searching a bit and speaking with customer services..Version: 10.08.000

Really? Non-stop “buy premium?”When I first downloaded this I thought it was fantastic. I was considering buying premium. Within 1-3 days (I guess there’s a trial where you get to do a few things for free...?) The app lost all functionality and every single time you “start a conversation” (which is the base functionality of the app) it prompts you to buy premium within 1-2 sentences. It doesn’t tell you which “options” of responses require premium until after you’ve clicked them, and then goes on a 2-3 sentence tirade begging you to buy premium. It’s also not made clear there is any trial- all functionality just vanished overnight. As someone with anxiety who found this super helpful at first, it was kind of awful to realize the app is actually just a money-grubbing scam. Oh, and every response to every negative review is a generic “We’re sorry you didn’t like it.” Shows you really care about your potential customers. I almost recommended this to several friends until I realized how manipulative and callous the entire thing is. I’ll be looking elsewhere, you just lost quite a few potential customers with your stunt of trying to covertly “hook” me on the app and coerce me into buying it..Version: 7.04.101

Wayyyy too expensiveOne of my friends helped me into actually trying to find ways to cope. I downloaded this app, excited to try it out. I loved it! Then I tried my second entry a few minutes ago, it does literally nothing. Premium is 100$ a year, that’s insane. If you guys really wanted to help out you’d make it free or even just a one time fee. I don’t even want to use it anymore, I don’t see a point. Might as well just have a journal instead. Really disappointed, it really got my hopes up..Version: 7.06.000

I loved it, until I didn't?Youper is an amazing app, and I mean it when I say I loved it. I still do! I first downloaded it 25 days ago, and have used it everyday since. I love the tracker and the mindfulness activities. But, as I continue to make this app a part of my daily routine, I am increasingly frustrated with the format. While I understand the purpose of place of the AI chat model, it slows down the process. There are times when I don't want to track my mood, and want to skip right to the Deep Body Scan, my favorite meditation tape. But before I can, I must drudge through the conversation with the AI. This is very inconvenient. To alleviate this problem while not changing much about the AI chat system itself, I would recommend creating a separate section of the app, solely for homing the meditation and breathing tapes. Once Youper recommends you a mindfulness activity within the chat, it should move you over the meditation section where you can choose. The separate section idea would also allow users to not start a chat at all, and rather dive immediately into their favorites. This, along with expanding on the number of audio tapes available, would really bring the app together for me. As I have said before, I absolutely love this app. But as I discover the benefits of meditation, I feel the app could be doing more with it. If these changes or changes like them were made, I would give 10 stars if I could..Version: 6.06.008

UnfortunateI have used Youper in the past many of times, it really helped me work through some things. Unfortunately this app now requires you to pay for the services which is understandable but the prices are much too expensive. Good thing gone...Version: 9.02.007

Disappointed but not surprisedIt used to be free but now I have to pay to meditate? Smh... it was one of the only free meditation apps on here.Version: 7.06.000

Deleted History (Used to be: Best app out there.)I haven’t used Youper in a while, but when it asked that I create an account (I declined), I didn’t expect all my history to have been deleted. How has this happened? Why does declining to create an account delete you history? Had I created an account, would it all have been saved? Why didn’t it tell me? I can’t believe a whole year of progress is now gone. I really needed you then, Youper... and I still need you now. Please come back to me Youper. Can anyone help me fix this? Can my previous entries and conversations be restored? I can’t just begin anew! Please, please help me with this. This is the best mental health app I’ve ever used... and I want to be able to keep using it. It really pains me to see that Youper doesn’t even remember my name. This feels (feels) like the death of a friend. Old review: No advertisements, no pushy subscriptions. Just pure self-care. Thank you so much for creating this app. It’s truly helped..Version: 8.08.100

I deleted the appAfter using it for like 4 years, I’ve recently discovered that almost EVERYTHING the app used to offer for free now has to be paid for. That breaks my heart..Version: 9.02.007

FrustratingI have used this app for years because it really helped me to have a CBT tool on my phone. Now a bunch of things that really worked for me in the past are unavailable behind a paywall. I understand subscription fees for apps but since I’m a longtime user, all my records from before the pay for service update are locked away..Version: 11.06.001

Real person betterIt’s not even a real person and it used to be free and now suddenly it costs money . You could just chat with free gotchat.Version: 12.02.001

Haunting my phoneI deleted youper because it was buzzing notifications continuously at 5am for no reason. After it was deleted the youper notifications kept coming back through even though I no longer have the app. Youper then suddenly appeared back on my phone without me installing it. Deleted it again. Notifications still coming through. One month later I am still getting the notifications when I don’t have the app. I have just woken up again to this app reinstalling itself and buzzing my phone with notifications asking how I am today. The app was good when I used it but now it wont go away. Not had this issue with any other apps..Version: 6.07.000

Free features are BSWhen I first downloaded this app, I was so excited to see all the cool features it had. After using all of them one time, everything became part of the paid subscription other than the mood tracker and the symptom tracker. This was annoying, but I KIND OF get it. One of my favorite free parts of this app, other than the mood tracker, was the health part where you can track symptoms of several disorders. I’ve been using those trackers regularly, so I was very disappointed to check my phone this morning and see that that too, is a premium feature. Now, all I can use without paying is the mood tracker. I can’t expand on my mood, set goals, track gratitude, track symptoms, or even meditate. Why should I have to pay to listen to something that’s supposed to help me asap when I’m panicking? All this app USED to do was tell me I’m depressed and not give me any way to fix it. Now, it doesn’t tell me anything useful at all. I understand that the developers need to make money off of Youper, but this app has become infuriating to use. It’s meant to help people, but without forcing them to pay a subscription, there are barely any useful features available. This app is apparently marketed as useful for people who can’t afford therapy, but that’s the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. Unless you’re willing to pay, I would suggest you look for another app..Version: 7.06.000

¯\_(ツ)_/¯I’m sure it’s good but you have to subscribe to access any of the activities. Even if they had a free week of support that would be helpful. I don’t think it’s fair to make someone pay $10 up front for a service they don’t know if they’ll align with..Version: 6.11.002

Unable to get money refundedI downloaded this app following a friend’s recommendation a year ago. I paid for the subscription due to very poor mental health however, it didn’t help me too much and I uninstalled the app. Today I get an email saying I’ve been charged- I didn’t know it auto renewed and now I have a payment I literally cannot afford that is causing me stress. It says to contact customer service but there is no email on their website and I’ve had no confirmation the subscription has ended and there’s no clear way to get it refunded. Thanks for making my mental health even worse….Version: 12.01.001

Your password is wrongThe app won’t let me login after I changed the password and chose to log out. I tried both the old and new, neither of them worked. Reset password worked for a while, but once you logged out, the same problem again..Version: 6.06.001

Only for anxiety caused by personal issuesI’m dealing with poverty & systemic discrimination. This app doesn’t help the slightest. It’s only made for anxiety that can be resolved by good thinking; not for anxiety coming from subjective situations such as global trauma (racism, ableism, situations you have no control over) and I wouldn’t recommend it for autistics either..Version: 8.04.000
