Kemono Mahjong for Positive User Reviews

Latest update causes some issuesThe latest update, as another review said, has made the AI turns slower than before. I would also like to see the old tiles added to the possible tile styles, as I’m not a big fan of the current tile faces..Version: 1.09.60

Great practice and a fun learning toolI’ve been looking for an AI mahjong game for a while. Things like Tenhou are nice but it’s not always practical to have a full game or even just have internet access. This game is fully offline for which I’m very grateful and has now become my go to tube game. The fact that it is all AI means you can pause whenever you like and take your time evaluating things although if you wait too long the others begin to heckle you, but I like that it makes it feel like a real game. It also has a few really nice quality of life settings I like such as identifying immediately discarded tiles and Japanese terms. It’s a very pretty game as well, far nicer than the online alternatives and I love the little quips by the characters. As well as the overly dramatic richii and victory animations which are hilariously over the top, which I love. The thing it’s great at though is helping you learn. It’s got a learning section which is nice but when a round is over it lists the fu and Yaku with their respective scores which reinforces the scoring so that you become more capable of scoring hands in real life too. It also lists the names of all the reasons for scoring in the hand in both English and with its original Japanese name. Even more interesting, for me anyway is that there are a bunch of AI players with different styles. In my real life group I’ve recognised the same styles of play and so it’s interesting to play against these styles and learn how to handle them better. I also love the stats so that I can see which things I’ve achieved. Of course every app can always be better it bothers me that it’s not laid out properly, I feel like the list view just lacks something the wall gives it. It’d be less space efficient so I get it and more annoying to animate as well but it’d be nice. Long term it’d even be lovely to allow multiplayer. I know I started by saying I loved that there was an AI version and with the EMA rules too but it’d be nice for my partner and I to be able to play with two AI players either hot seat or actual multiplayer but that’s an incredibly minor niggle. Overall the game is well designed, well executed, well acted and just a joy to use. I haven’t purchased many apps but I don’t regret this one for a second and have already spread it around my group. So if you like Mahjong I really can’t recommend this app enough!.Version: 1.06.22

Lost my dataI really enjoy this app and want to give it five stars but when I opened the app after the most recent update I found all my data and unlocked characters gone and my settings were reset.Version: 1.06.70

Challenging and FunThe Japanese version of Mahjong is more challenging and more complex. This game has a strong tutorial and fun game play. I love it..Version: 1.05.14

One of the best.Fun, easy to hop in and out of, good support for all screen sizes that I’ve tried. The list of games I install on every iOS device is pretty small (this game, Frotz, Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection, Pathos: Nethack Codex, and Stardew Valley), but it’s very worthy of a spot on anyone’s device. I’d love to see more women as potential opponents (women appear to make up under 1/3 of the total), but the roster is already very good overall, with plenty of unique characters. (I wouldn’t say no to more guys either though, haha).Version: 1.12.02

Best Riichi Mahjong appLove the game. Love the AI. Hate the furries..Version: 1.23.01

Great game! This game does a great job of covering the rules of mahjong and providing quick and easy references for use during gameplay. A definite recommendation to anyone interested in riichi mahjong!.Version: 1.06.4

Very good! The character art is good, the voice acting is good, and the AI is interesting and varied. It’s also much easier to tap on the right tile in your hand than I expected (on an iPhone X, at least). I came into this game as an intermediate riichi mahjong player so I haven’t tried the tutorials, but even so it’s a lot of fun to just play against the AI. And thank goodness for paid apps with no ads! Well worth the few dollars it cost. With the tutorial content I imagine it’s an incredible deal for novice players. I appreciated the ability to use classic tiles without any assisting letters or numbers, since that’s what I’m used to playing with. Same thing for the setting to display the Japanese names of the yaku! I’m just used to it so I really appreciate the ability to see it. I have two feature requests: The ability to toggle on three red 5s, and the choice to start a hanchan with 25000 points instead of 30000. The starting points especially is quite minor, and the game is so well done I wouldn’t imagine taking stars off this review because it doesn’t have these features..Version: 1.06.70

Perfect for a beginnerI knew nothing about how to play riichi mahjong before playing this, but I wanted to learn and heard it had decent tutorials. After playing this for a little while now, I’m having no trouble understanding what’s going on and am already able to recognise several kinds of winning hands. The art and music are pleasant, with the various AI-controlled characters behaving differently to each other (some easier to beat than others!) so there is some nice variety if you are playing by yourself. My only major complaint would be the lack of iCloud saving, since my stats between different devices are now separated and it also takes a while to unlock some of the characters..Version: 1.09.93

Great mahjong gameI've been looking for a good mahjong game for my phone for a long time. This is a really nice version that uses Japanese rules. The characters are charming, it looks great, and it has a very thorough tutorial to teach you the rules. I've been playing it every day!.Version: 1.02.5

Has this game been updated?Hi, I’ve been a mahjong player for about two decades now and have been playing online apps - including this one for a very long time now. I used to love playing this app. However, I’m a bit puzzled by something that is ruining the experience for me. Has this game been updated and made harder or something? Now, I’m just like any seasoned mahjong player: I have won my fair share of games in this app (sometimes by huge margins) and other games I have lost (sometimes by big margins), but recently, the AI seem incredibly lucky and next to impossible to beat straight away (this skewed-luck is especially noticeable in 3 player mahjong mode due to the near complete removal of the manzu suit and the fact it’s only three players playing). For example: the deer character (I forget her name) got three consecutive baiman riichi hands in a row within her first four turns of those hands (and this was as dealer). Even weirder is it appears if the AI know exactly what is in the other players’ hands (including yours). I just played six games there and in about half of those the AI were discarding bizarre choices of tiles which then would inexplicably match up with another AI’s win for that hand (e.g. The parrot character was dealer and discarded honours and terminals for their first five turns, the snow leopard who was South, discarded a 7 Souzu, then a 4 Souzu, then a 5 Souzu, a 3 Souzu then a 1 Souzu (none of these were immediate discard draws from the wall) and with the 1 Souzu dealt into parrot’s menzen honitsu 1-4 Souzu wait hand. This character did this weird discarding of suit tiles at the start of four different hands in the same game and dealt into the other two AI hands - two of these hands being for single tile waits for closed, ordinary hands (again where discards were only terminals and honours and riichi was not declared) and within the first four or five turns, and this behaviour only occurred when my owns hands were a 2 or 3-Shanten which I would then turn into a riichi hand on average by my 3rd turn and where I would mostly only discard typical starting tiles - unneeded honours and terminals. So it totally puzzles me how she did that without knowing what tiles were where.) In fact another egregious example of the above has been the numerous times where I and the AI after me have both declared riichi and one of the other two AI will inexplicably declare a simple pon or chi from the AI before them (without Dora or having declared a yaku-hai or itsu, which is weird considering I never have the kuitan rule accepted) and then oddly, due to the shift in tiles due to the call, the player after me would draw and discard my winning tile. Now, I know this is a valid tactic to potentially mess with ready hands but it’s odd how often I’ve been in that situation in this app and had my winning tile shifted like that. What’s even weirder is how if you verse any random three characters they will play brilliantly, have superb defence and have insane luck and soundly beat you, you then immediately rematch those characters (choosing them in the selection screen and sitting them in the exact same positions as before) and they are inexplicable and incredibly easy to defeat due to them making beginner errors and other obvious plays. Then you play other characters and they go back to being extremely difficult - it’s bizarre. I’m genuinely starting to think I have a weird or buggy version of this game or something..Version: 1.17.20

Great mahjong gameVery nice implementation and interface. The yaku list is well laid out. Playing can help you learn the game so you can play with others!.Version: 1.06.51

Best Mahjong App!Last year I decided that I really wanted to learn how to play Riichi Mahjong - mostly as a result of getting into playing it in FFXIV. Not only is Kemono Mahjong a great app for playing, but it's ideal for novices looking to learn or improve. The interface has easily tappable entries for scoring to help you familiarize yourself with the game's terminology as well. All of these features (not to mention the super cute art!) make Kemono Mahjong easily one of the best mahjong apps I've tried, and one that I greatly recommend to beginners and advanced players alike..Version: 1.09.93

Cool gameI have no one to play yakuman with irl but at least I can play with some well-designed AI. Only downside is I tend to play really aggressive specifically on this app because of my feelings of human supremacy over robots, but hey it’s cool to experiment. I like looking at my stats too.Version: 1.06.70

Simply ExcellentDon’t be put off by the animal theme, there’s no other english version of real mahjong that even comes close to how good this is..Version: 1.12.01

Version: 1.12.01

Quick Honest ReviewPros: Really cool, easy to use, fun to play. Negs: Can’t play while screen is sideways, tile bugs while calling (gets really annoying having to go to the setting and back just to have the tile appear) Overall: Good app. Wish there was a bit more content (character personality, side games, etc), and small UI bugs were smoothed out..Version: 1.09.63

Fun and easyI was a little taken aback with the art and it’s.. cultural underpinnings and I’d feel a little awkward discussing the game with others. That said though it’s a great time waster and a great tool for learning Mahjong..Version: 1.09.91

Best app to learn RiichiThis is a 5/5 app to learn Riichi mahjong, it has a great UI, it shows you how the scoring is done at the end by breaking it down, there is a reference for yaku that you can see it at any time. I was a beginner and the tutorial helped me learn the game. Im not a huge fan of the animal theme but the mechanics and the game itself is solid enough that it is worth buying even if you dont like the theme like me..Version: 1.09.81

Decent GameGood implementation, tiles are small hence the loss of a star.Version: 1.12.01

Fun and adorable. Fundorable? Adorafun?I'm not well-versed in mahjong, but this is a fun way to learn and play! It doesn't hurt that your opponents are Disney-level cute, either..Version: 1.0.10

I yell riichi at work sometimes this is great10/5 game of the year.Version: 1.09.25

Easiest 5 star review everThis game has taken me from having not a single clue, to being able to play and win on my own merits. Great ui, great sound, fun ai players and best of all, the dev is really helpful and more than happy to answer questions and help with understanding the finer points of the game. You will be beating those guys in Yakuza before you know it! (Games understand, right?) Brilliant..Version: 1.12.01

Nice intro to the gameGreat game for anyone who wants to learn Mahjong!.Version: 1.09.81

Best Offline Mahjong Game!I bought this app for the first time before I switched to an iPhone, and it was just about the first app that I got once I did switch. The AI is not too bad really, and the differences between the computer characters adds a nice bit of variety. All the art assets (backgrounds, character icons, voice lines, etc.) are far beyond what I would have ever expected from a mostly single player mahjong app. Being able to pause a game and come back to it later is great, since this game is the one I always go to during brief periods of downtime. The developer is active, responsive, and very nice :).Version: 1.09.63

Tile being called is extremely light, practical whiteVery hard to tell what tile may be called as it is almost solid white on my iPad Air 2. I keep turning the screen as in portrait mode the tile is a little bigger. Major flaw with something very fundamental yet there is great attention to detail with everything else..Version: 1.09.81

Great way to learn!Has an excellent tutorial section and descriptions of hands while playing. Cute characters and dialog make it more fun than the usual vs AI apps around..Version: 1.03.7

Perfect for entry-level mahjong playersAllows for beginners to develop essential winning-hand making skills. This app is great and needs more exposure to people who are interested in playing mahjong for the very first time. Inclusion of a simple tutorial on how to create a winning hand (through gameplay) will even further assist in new players diving into the mahjong sport. I would like to believe that this app shines a light in bringing new players into the international/EMA mahjong scene by providing early learning experiences..Version: 1.07.23

Teaches and plays great!I'd never played Mahjong before and by the end of the day I was hooked and had grasped it enough to win some matches. The tutorials are excellent at teaching and the game looks gorgeous and plays really well..Version: 1.07.11

My go-to mobile mahjongThis has been a go-to game for me lately. It’s got very good presentation and explains terms and riichi rules very well. Presentation is nice with good sound effects and music..Version: 1.06.6

The furries taught me how to play Riichi Mahjong so I can devastate FFXIVGood app :).Version: 1.23.62

:oThe doggo daddies are awfully cute!.Version: 1.06.70

Great learning tool.Tried to learn how to play mahjong in online lobbies with discard timers and overbearing hint systems. Turns out it’s way easier against bara furry bots— who knew?.Version: 1.09.93

AmazingI use this app to get better at mahjong without waiting for a game online. It’s extremely fun and challenging at the same time. I would highly recommend it if you love Japanese mahjong as much as I do..Version: 1.15.08

Great game !I love the design and tutorials. Very colorful and beautiful. Everything is perfect..Version: 1.12.03

Very fun to playIt is great to have an English Riichi game. The graphics are beautiful. I enjoyed the game play..Version: 1.0.10

Great funGreat app to learn and play. Question I have for developer is that I am Unlocking new characters as I win but I don’t know where to find them..Version: 1.09.25

Best Riichi TutorialBest tutorial for the rules I have found so far!.Version: 1.09.81

Love it!Great app if you want to learn (or practice) riichi mahjong!! Very pleasant layout and easy to use, well worth the few bucks for endless hours of playtime! Highly recommended..Version: 1.05.14

Really great!I love this app, it gives a nice tutorial to beginners and allows you to play matches on the go! Although I’ve found a couple bugs, the devs were quick to respond on Twitter, and very friendly. This game is a great start for anyone trying to learn the game, and I wholeheartedly recommend it!.Version: 1.04.7

Fantastic for beginnersReally clear tutorials the ability to look up yakus at any time is awesome as well Looking forward to future updates ^^.Version: 1.06.4

Solid Richi Mahjong GameWhile Richi isn’t my first rule set of choice (would be great if we could select other rule sets to play), this is easily a top contender for English language Mahjong games on iOS..Version: 1.07.11

Make them dumberI'm a moron.Version: 1.09.81

Nice butAi isn’t quite smart It is a shame because main focus of the app is singleplayer..Version: 1.26.00

GreatBeen playing on this app for a few years now, really fun. I noticed on my iPad though the landscape mode looks different now and the right side players avatar covers up their tiles when they call, forcing me to go to portrait mode to see what it was. Any chance the old layout can be an option? Thank you! Otherwise love it and love the characters.Version: 1.24.01

Tsumo!Got into mahjong with Final Fantasy XIV, then let my sub expire. Got this app and can't stop playing. I might be addicted. It's a very accessible app, very well put together, everything I'd expect. Also it's rare that a mobile app ever successfully convinces me to buy its merch. Looking forward to those adorable characters on some cards :) It's a travesty how few ratings this has. It's truly top tier riichi mahjong and I look forward to many more hours losing to a wolf..Version: 1.15.03

Riichi Mahjong for everybodyMost Japanese mahjong games are a mixed bag, often they presume you are already proficient, or they are in the Japanese panguage. This game is fun, easy to enjoy, has a tutorial, and is just made with a pride you can tell went into its creation. The author of this game has put tremendous effort over the years making Mahjong accessible to beginners as well as experienced players. If you have wanted to get into Japanese style, Riichi mahjong, buy this game. Its good, you will learn, and it will help you build your skill and open your eyes to a terrific game..Version: 1.01.0

Really fun!I've never played real mahjong before it's really fun and interesting to learn!.Version: 1.03.7

Great way to learnSuper fun and easy way to start!.Version: 1.15.03

Great for learningGreat tutorials and scoring explanations. Much closer to board play than other games. Needs a UI setting for iPhone X and up, discard button is a little too close to the home bar..Version: 1.12.03

Incredible, especially for beginners. This game is amazing and the tutorials made getting up to speed effortless. I appreciate how much effort the dev has spent trying to explain and elucidate the intimacies of this game. I don’t love the furry art style but that’s a small complaint for such a great game. Wishlist: - better indication of why I’m in furiten. I still get confused about this. - local multiplayer. Allow me to pass my phone to someone next to me 5 stars and much deserving. Just get this game. Can’t wait to see online get rolled out!.Version: 1.06.70

THE BEST Mahjong gameIf you were to download one legit Mahjong game, this would be the one. Great presentation, music, instructions, and gameplay. I hope this one stays on the App Store for a long long time..Version: 1.16.05

Love thisFantastically designed and intuitive!.Version: 1.09.81

Good game, but soft locksThis is a nice little mahjong game, but I have encountered a pretty bad bug: when I was on my 12th round of my very first game, the game soft locked - it will not continue the game, and even if I start a new game it still will not start. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app to get past the soft lock. I'd imagine the soft lock would happen again anyway at some point. If you could look into this issue that would be great! EDIT: I played the game some more for the rest of the day and I have not encountered any problems so far, so the softlock issue was probably just a glitch in my part. I have updated the review. Great work guys!!.Version: 1.02.5

Needed Something to Pass the Time...My biggest concern with this app when I first saw it was whether or not there was a tutorial. Glad to say it did! Not only that, it goes into depth about the basics and key mechanics in different sections that you can go back and reference. It does take some time and concentration to even begin to understand, but it's still fun even if you don't understand every intricacy (like myself). Long story short, if you wanna learn Mahjong this is an excellent place to start! In addition, the characters are charming and add a nice touch to the game..Version: 1.01.0

Needs landscapeStill very new to the app, I will update this later once I have used it more but I wanted to let anyone who is considering it know that while it looks like a very good app, it’s missing landscape orientation so you have to play in portrait orientation..Version: 1.15.03
