✓ Good but might not be the best first impressionI’ve had a lot of fun with the game. The problem is that for newcomers this game might deviate them from trying out a real Shin Megami Tensei. Many things are different from traditional SMTs though mostly just simplified versions, but the story, characters and many other details have much less quality than an usual SMT game. I know this is made to be a stand-alone game, but a mobile game is a great way to introduce new players to the franchise since pretty much everyone has a phone. Not to say it has no similarities with a mainline one, but it may give a wrong idea of what a Shin Megami Tensei game is or give a bad impression because of the different quality between this one and the usual SMTs. Another thing, though not one very important is that the soundtrack is not at the same level the other games usually are. It was still an enjoyable experience, though I’d rather replay any Shin Megami Tensei, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, Digital Devil or Persona. Also, to people who are familiar with the whole franchise already, think of this as an alternative to have on the go. To people that are new to SMT, I encourage you to play any SMT game that isn’t this one and truly experience what this franchise has to offer..Phantomz7Version: 3.1.30

✓ Good game, slow grindI’m a big SMT fan, so that’s an automatic star right there. I love the simple UI of the game too, and it’s flow. Some of the more iconic and powerful demons are openly available to fuse with no need for premium currency (unless banner limited), and said currency is not all that hard to grind for, so there’s no real need to whale for… say the first month at least. Now to the cons of the game, which hurts me spiritually to do this… The game is a very slow grind. There’s no easy way to grind alotta macca (arguably the most vital resource in the game) in a short period of time except in events maybe. PVP is heavily leaned towards dedicated players/spenders with their meta changing units. But my biggest issue is the actual “speed” of the game. Im not sure who came up with the idea, but no game should ever… *EVER* lock a game function behind a paywall! Why is x4 speed restricted to players under level 80 and people who pay $15 a month? ✓ Good, but greedy, like EA greedy.I think the game is well designed and has a good concept. Except for the start of the game and any time I attempt to summon. The offers that come up are egregiously greedy. I wouldn’t be so turned off from a game if I wasn’t greeted with “BUY MY $150 MICROTRANSACTIONS” any time I started up the game. It’s honestly disgusting, especially with the recent commotions of these practices. ✓ Not too bad but ...While better than many phone games it resorts to many of the same ethically dubious tricks as other freemium titles. As is typical with freemium games you are given daily chores to complete for rewards, you are forced to pretend a bunch of strangers are your friends for points, and you can join a team of people who miss the entire point of the team and won’t do anything to help move towards the team goals and the better units are of course only obtainable through gambling with real money. The story and characters are well written tends to feel somewhat like a brief plot summary. To combat this the game is rather grind heavy and as is typical of freemium games, there is a stamina system (to date I have yet to figure out why devs would want you to leave and potentially forget about their game perhaps it’s the same reason beers tell you to drink responsibly). The unfortunate side effect of this is it results in a fatigue of suspension of disbelief and plot points becoming fuzzy as time does it’s savage work on memory. There are worse freemium games on the market to be sure but as with fire emblem, the freemium shin megami tensi game is one of less enjoyable title in the series..LazoreyesVersion: 2.2.00

✓ High hopes from a smt lover butImpossible to enjoy the game properly when every min you got tutorials thrown on your screen or other pointless information, you finish one bunch of tutorials that pop up by spamming them away just for more to pop up! The tutorials are so obnoxious that when I went to put equipment on one of my demons 4 separate tutorials popped up and after each one it took me back to the safe house screen. If this was the only game I played, then it would be awesome.... except for the “buy this now” pop ups every 5 minutes. ✓ Could be betterThe game does have a good story, and you can progress through the story at a decent pace with just 4 five star demons. So why do I give it only 3 stars? First, PVP modes are a mess, you frequently run into teams at low ranks that shouldn’t be there, either because the account was abandoned or by intentional rank dropping to troll new folks. This could be mitigated by adjusting the match up system to go off of demon strength and current rank, or giving us more free opponent refreshes per day. Either would help tremendously. The other problem is the price they expect you to pay for gems. Now, you can earn a lot of free gems, which is great, but eventually your only source of free gems will be PVP and log in rewards. Now, I know the company needs to make money, but $80 US currency for the equivalent of 60 random pulls is steep. There’s not even any special paid gem only draws to entice you, the gems all spend in the same banners. Overall, I recommend playing only if you’re a patient sort of person or have large amounts of cash to spend..RabalaskVersion: 6.2.10

I love smt because of the challenge, but it only takes a turn or two to clear the entire wave in the main story or end the battle in aura gate. ✓ Unclear what the future will look likeWith the incoming nerfs (1% down to .5%) to 5 star unit drops and the rollback on the daily task rewards, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll continue playing. PvP rewards were also recently nerfed, which just makes this even worse. I love the combat system and the variety of different team builds you can make, but things feel pretty stagnant right now in terms of what you can do without spending tons of money. ✓ Depends on what you are looking forI’m going to try and write an honest review. There are good and bad things about this game. Pros: The game is beautiful. Great idea and very fun. A lot to do so it rarely gets boring. Cons: the game gives your virtually NOTHING to work with. Give me a free 10 summon or the option to get enough gems to summon a strong monster. The summon rates are putrid which is fine but at least give me a chance to summon without paying a crazy amount of money to get a good monster. This means I either have to use auto or use an item. This isn’t too bad in normal levels but when you add pvp in the mix, you find yourself losing a fights you could’ve won if the glitch didn’t occur. It’s infuriating. ✓ Could be much better, from a fan.I’m a huge fan of the SMG and Persona games so wen I saw this I was excited, but it sadly eroded the more I played. First, the good: the graphics are amazing however, if you have it on high settings it drains battery. The gameplay is amazing too, it’s just exactly like Persona 5. The story is pretty decent for a mobile game, nothing too surprising or amazing happens though. Now for the bad: the gatcha rates are terrible and you get free gems so rarely that it’s impossible to ever get a 5 star demon. ✓ SMT in name onlyAside for the presence of all the demons of SMT and the press turn battle system, it’s just a generic turn based gacha full of predatory microtransactions, simplified « gameplay » designed to be automated so it of course become too easy as only power truly matter compared to mainline where to survive, you have to exploit weaknesses, do the right choices when fusing, use buffs/debuffs, in a nutshell think strategically(a word that mobile developers love using but clearly don’t understand). ✓ One Month Later...DO NOT PLAYMmkay. Good at first, not so good once you spend some time with the game and the rose colored glasses fall off. Initially, I’d posted a very glowing review (since taken down). After about a month with the game, many warts have appeared: drop rates are horrendous, development is slow, there’s a very strict meta for PVP and its ruled by whales—rich get richer as they are the ones to collect the most gems each week. On the subject of gems, I saved over 200,000 through package sales and clearing content and NOT A SINGLE FIVE STAR dropped. That’s how bad the rates are. You do 200 pulls in any other game and you’re guarenteed to get something, anything of worth. Don’t expect that with SMT DX2. You do get a pity pull, kinda, when you do 200 greater summons, though it costs approximately $700-800 to collect enough parchments to get one. Furthermore, you’re pulling from a pool of 26 units with four potential archetypes each. Archetypes, two of which are universally useless and unwanted (Protector/ Aragami). There are numerous balancing issues pertaining to these unbalanced archetypes, compounded with the fact that certain units are locked exclusively behind gatcha and completely trivialize the game. It is perhaps the most exploitative and worthless gacha I’ve seen in the past few years. I don’t understand how they intend to make money off it when even the whales are scared to pull. You will get a better account from restarting the game over and over until you’ve pulled an Alice or Yoshi. DO NOT spend money. It gets you nowhere. Performance issues will hit you even on high end devices. Support are next to useless, and in the reoccurring connection issues where thousands upon thousands of steps were lost by a multitude of players, we received a “we’re sorry, here’s one step refiller for your troubles”. One step refiller restores 300 steps. Myself and countless others lost in the thousands. As far as the pros: the game looks great, sounds great and has some fun mechanics. ✓ Somehow ruins Press TurnDespite using the press turn system, the battles leave little room for any actual strategy. Most of the time you fight the exact same demons over and over again but with higher stats. This game is plagued by the typical characteristics of a f2p gacha based game. Yes, there is a rarity system, and upgrading to a higher rarity resets the demon’s level to 1. Even when the demons you fight increase in level, if you recruit them their level resets to 1. Fusing new demons also usually sets their level to 1 no matter who it is. It’s all an artificial way to force you to grind and encourage you to buy the EXP boosting items. As for the story, it’s terrible and monotonous. What kills me is they have the Aura Gate, which is a bonus area that is very much a traditional first person SMT dungeon crawler with random encounters instead of waves and has a much more interesting story. They showed that they very easily could have made a game that deviated from all these gacha games. Instead they were too busy finding ways to dangle gems, macca, magnetite, aether, summon files, and other “rewards” to get you addicted to this cash grab..BardwayerVersion: 1.5.0

For everyone who farms the event like crazy. What are we supposed to do with all these orbs sitting there. DMC is a fav series of mine and I’m sad to see that the art was just ripped from the game assets and not drawn like the bayonetta ones. Dx2 is a series that I’d really like to keep playing and occasionally spend money on.
