✓ Technology doesn’t work, but that’s the positive side of the experienceI bought a smart pen 11 days ago. It’s not working (only transcribes part of the text, misses some entire pages, …). I signaled the issue right away and was told their tech support would be in touch. I have not yet heard from their tech support. 11 days. I’ve asked daily for help during that time, still have not heard from them. Their customer service person in Twitter is very nice, but that’s all. Moleskine has marketed a product that doesn’t work and that they don’t support and they stop returning your calls when you ask for a refund. I’m going to start using them as the antithesis of good customer service. Anyway, if you know of a good alternative, I'm listening..Version: 1.5.9

First of all it requires Google or Microsoft account, and does not allow me to use my Apple iCloud user. Second of all, it does not have any instructions on how to create a notebook. ✓ Somewhat UsefulIf you want to take notes using pen and paper, it works okay. Once I transfer my notes to the app, I create a PDF and open it in NoteShelf or GoodNotes 5. The MoleSkine app isn’t friendly nor very useful compared to a full blown note-taking app like NoteShelf or Notability. It doesn’t sync with iCloud and often hangs when doing a backup and restore using Google. Maybe MoleSkine should consider partnering with one of these note-taking apps? ✓ Crashes all the time…update…Cannot use this app as whenever trying to sign in to Drive the app just shuts down with no message or warning. Update: successful contact with the developer who assures me this is on the “to do” list. Updated to a 3 star in the meantime. Further update: latest update to the app appears to have fixed the Google Drive and migration issue. Will update further later. App now does not bomb out but transcription does not work, planner entries show on the transferred page data but, as they aren’t transcribed, don’t show up in my linked calendar..Version: 1.3.1

✓ Fine idea, poor executionFor years the Moleskine brand has been well regarded for its elegant, practical design and quality builds. When you see a Moleskine notebook you think serious, quality, and beauty. You think modern and timeless. That’s what makes the Notes App such a disappointment. I’ve been using the Moleskine Smart Writing System (pen & notebooks) regularly for work and school for three years. While the pen and notebooks are in keeping with Moleskine’s reputation, the App fails to do even the basic functions (like upload pages) consistently. The more advanced features, like transcribing handwritten notes to text rarely work at all and with some updates you can’t even access them. Perhaps this is an example of what happens when a traditional company tries to do technology but I want to believe Moleskine can do better..Version: 1.4.5

✓ Falls at the first hurdleI thought the system was too good to be true. Turns out I was right. Fully charged my new smart pen (I guess—there’s no way to tell if it’s charging, or when it’s fully charged, but overnight should do it, right?). I downloaded the notes app and turned on the pen as instructed (again, there’s no indication that the pen is on, so I’m working blind here). The app can’t find my pen. I tried resetting the pen. No joy. Given the appalling reviews of moleskin’s customer support, I have little hope of getting help with the problem and will probably just return the smart writing set, which I only got so that I could use the smart planner, which I bought without realising I’d have to spend around £200 more to get the pen. ✓ So much potential, but such an awful app.Let me begin by saying that I spent £229 on the Smart Writing Set by Moleskine, supposedly updated in 2022. The rest of the hardware is okay, but the app itself is awful. There is quite a lag when syncing what’s written in the notebook with what’s on the app, and the auto sync is just too unreliable. The pen’s firmware itself also will not update. As a consequence, I CANNOT RECOMMEND that people buy this offering from Moleskine. It’s just truly awful. I will be returning this within the next two weeks, but will continue to use it in the meantime. The hope is that Moleskine are able to make changes to the app to improve the shortcomings. I will update my review to reflect any changes within the next couple of weeks where I’ll also declare if I keep the Smart Writing Set or not..Version: 1.6.4
✓ Doesn’t workThe app keeps glitching. Information doesn’t transfer correctly. Some features of the app are no longer functional. When I contacted their support team I was asked to provide screenshots of the problems and haven’t heard from them since (despite multiple chasers). ✓ TERRIBLE DEV TEAMI know for a fact Moleskine has a better dev team. Look at their other apps! I have no idea why this is such a MESS of an app. The transfer from the old app was a true mess. And moleskine knew that, they were just lazy. After a day of using it it just crashes seconds after opening. What a giant mess. Also when the pen is downloading (which we all know takes wayyyyy too long) the app is totally unusable. Why isn’t their a background download??? ✓ DisappointedI’m incredibly disappointed with this app. This 2.0 version is really glitchy. I can’t sync in my notebook from google drive and pass the stuff from version 1. The old app was getting annoying with its pop up message that I need to move to the new version. However, the 2.0 version is useless. It crashes all the time. I can’t even get to the point of syncing with google drive. I have an iPhone in the latest system, and this doesn’t work. I would not recommend getting this notebook. ✓ This App is HorribleI just bought the moleskin smart writing system and this app is terrible. It lacks features that the old moleskin notes app had, such as the ability to export to OneNote. It somehow jumbled my only notebook so now the notes are split into 2 different notebooks and there is no way to copy notes from one notebook to the other. I don’t have an iPad - only an iPhone - so maybe the iPad version is better, but it would be nice to be able to have the same features as the iPad version AND the same features from the previous version. Until they get this right, I’m sticking to the old moleskin version because I can at least export to OneNote. Plus, only the Moleskin v1 app is available on the Windows Store..Version: 1.1.2

✓ Could be worse.I used Livescribe before and am new to this set up. I’ve read some reviews here that are less than favourable. My experience so far is that it works and offers more features and an infinitely better experience than my last system’s app which was awful. My teething issues: 1. There is half a page that didn’t upload to the phone (Some of which was used for calibration). 2. The pen had to be re-paired to the phone on my second use. Feature request: 1. Ability to view pages in reverse to the current view, ie; oldest first. 2. Backup to iCloud instead of only Google or Microsoft as options. 3. The option to customise the use for the on paper envelope icon. Or, at least the option to choose email the pdf, email a transcription or both as an option in settings. I haven’t used this system much yet as this was a gift from a friend but despite the pen feeling a little cheap on the whole it is already better than Livescribe’s set up. Mostly centred around the app, theirs is terrible this one works and offers more. I will return to this review after more experience using the pen and app The pen etc… I have is an older version that charges via mini usb despite being a brand new unopened writing set. ✓ Trying to sign in to Google Drive to migrate notebooks causes app to crashI was looking forward to using the new version of notes, but got stuck in the migration process. On both my iPhone and iPad, the attempt to sign in to Google Drive causes the app to crash. ✓ Consistently unreliable and impressively badPretty sure Moleskin is just trolling us at this point. Coin toss odds if your notes will synch from the pen to the app. Half the time the upload completes without transferring any data to the app and its lost forever because the pen clears its memory after every synch. The moleskin smart note system functions just fine as a regular pen and paper notebook but isn’t reliable enough to count on it for much else. Its like the wish version of a Rocketbook. Hard to imagine Moleskin can make a product this bad on accident. The amount of thought that had to go into designing all of the cleverly malicious failure points, of which there are dozens, is truly impressive..Version: 1.4.4

✓ Very disappointingI had high expectations for this product as I am very keen to keep on handwriting whilst benefiting from the advantages of a digital tool such as convenience to file, search and organize. Unfortunately, Moleskine is falling extremely short. The app needs to be consistently on for your rating to be recorded, the synchronisation between devices is totally unreliable (meaning I am still unable to see all my pages on either my phone or my ipad since I used the app alternatively on both devices) and the filing process is not helpful (you would want the ability to create a file by set of notes as opposed to by page number from the notebook). ✓ Disappointing, unusableI am a big fan of Moleskine products having used their notebooks and pens for many years. Having tried using the Apple Pencil and various notes apps I decided to switch back to good old pen & paper for note taking during business meetings. Whilst the original V1 app was lacking in the UI/UX I generally found that it worked without incident. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of this version. Synchronizing with the Eclipse pen is inconsistent but worse still is the impossibility of opening and reading any note/ page that did manage to sync to my iPhone. In my experience as soon as I attempt to view any page on my phone the app crashes. I would not recommend this app or writing systems until it drastically improves..Version: 1.1.3
✓ Had high hopes.Even purchased two custom notebooks. 1 Zero product support 2 No real instructions on how to maximize value of system 3 Apparently no Evernote integration, despite thousands of references online (including screenshots) asserting that it exists. 4 etc… Thinking perhaps Evernote integration is enabled by setting up a Moleskine Smart online account, went to sign up but was absolutely astounded to see that I would have to agree to basically give up all (and I mean *all*!), rights to privacy, just to set up the account. ✓ Seriously?This app has potential. However, currently some of the most basic features do not work whatsoever. For example, I forgot my password for my moleskine account, and the password reset feature DOES NOT WORK. I tried multiple times over the course of weeks — never received an email to reset the password. Even worse, I sent a message to Moleskine about this issue and received an auto-reply saying they would get back to me within 2 business days… that was over 3 weeks ago. Very cool, to not respond at all. Sure gives me confidence in my new smart pen…. NOT. If I don’t get a response I will return the pen. Ridiculous..Version: 1.4.3
✓ Not badSo far, it does what it’s supposed to do, however, part of the reason I opted for the Smart writing set is aesthetics. I just much prefer the look and feel of real ink on paper. Unfortunately, the stroke rendering resolution is too low to look good. Given that everything seems to be available in vector format, it would be great if users got an option for choosing the rendering quality both for display in the app and when exporting as image/PDF. This would be ideal for people who care about this kind of thing, and are OK with larger file sizes as a result. Also, I’d like to see an option for line smoothing similar to what other Apple Pencil based Apps do (this would likely also reduce the file size for the vector graphic).Version: 1.4.2

Syncing across devices result on conflicts. Decided to just sync with my iOS and ever since then, I have to reconcile EVERY single notebook (I have one) and every page when I sync. Worst $300 spent. The store won’t even talk to me and support ignores me. Oh, and my set was missing a charger cable so I am on my last legs before this becomes a cheap pen with a cheap refill and some really expense books. I am disputing the purchase. I hate this thing. The transfer and backup process was confusing and not very user friendly. Once I figured out how to backup my notebooks, there were still missing pages. ✓ Promising concept, appalling executionThe concept is fantastic, and while it wasn’t great, version 1 of the app was usable. To echo the comments of other reviewers, version 2 has made this an awful user experience. Pages often don’t sync anymore, and finding this out after several hours of work, it’s highly frustrating and you may as well have used a normal pen. There also seems to be no effort to fix this - Moleskine have gone down in my estimation as a brand, and this reduces my willingness to spend money on their non-digital stationery. ✓ Do Not BotherAs an update to my earlier review, after the latest app update to v2 the migration does work better, but does not import virtual notebooks from the previous app (v1) - Apparently Moleskine think you will not miss all these notes that you categorised and saved - what is the point of this version, you may as well use a normal pen and paper and not have the frustration of using such a poor product from a brand that is doing its best to alienate its customers. ✓ 2023 planner and journal.The customer service is horrible, i emailed several times with detail description of my issues and sent a video recording as well. They respond with irrelevant answers that do not address my problems. Im constantly losing everything on the all despite the back up. They also take from weeks to a month to respond. ✓ Disappointing app for impressive technologyThe smart writing set is a very impressive technology system, but it all depends on the app, which doesn’t seem to be working right. I thought the main point of the 2.0 version was to sync across devices, but nothing is syncing—I have two in complete notebooks on my two devices. This defeats the whole purpose of the technology itself. I’m not able to log in via Google either, and the option to sync over Evernote (another reason I was interested) doesn’t even show up. App also crashed on me the first day, forcing me to uninstall and reinstall, and in the process lose everything I had written. ✓ Nice idea, but ultimately got fed up with it.Had this as a gift last year and have used it quite extensively now. Initially I was quite excited at the idea of being able to continue note taking in the old fashioned way, but still have the ability to search back for things and access all my notes on the move. Generally I find the character recognition to be fairly poor though, which in turn limits the app’s ability to search for key words etc. You can export text to Word, but as well as the limited character recognition resulting in some sporadic hieroglyphics, only one page of your book can be exported at a time, so creating a Word version of meeting notes over several pages of your book is fiddly. It’s more fiddly because you have to do it all in a phone app - there’s no desktop companion or even a web portal. Syncing between pen and phone is quite slow and has definitely become more error prone over time. I’ve now reached a point with it where basically it won’t sync at all. Moleskine books aren’t all that cheap (smart versions even less so) and spares such as ink refills are expensive and weren’t in stock for quite a while. The delivery fees they charge on top of their prices is simply daylight robbery - especially given the time it then takes for things to arrive. Unlike ReMarkable or an iPad, this product gets actually more expensive the more you use it. Overall, it’s a nice idea and could be fixed, but I haven’t benefited from any obvious further development in the year I’ve been using the product, so I’m not so confident that it will be fixed..Version: 1.8.3
✓ No google integrations no upgrade from the previous app!Just tried to upgrade to the newer app and to transfer my old data you need to use google drive as a backup. This app isn’t verified by google though so currently doesn’t work. Update… Since the update i’ve been able to transfer older data from Google however I t’s now absolutely hit or miss if notes are taken/transferred and since the pen Firmware update the pen barely works. An absolute disgrace that the developers think this is acceptable considering the price of the pens and notepads..Version: 1.4.2
✓ A lot of bugsThere are quite a few bugs the dev team should work on, including syncing issues with the Pen+, drawings that randomly appear and cannot be erased, and strange issues where the previews or workspaces in the notebook look small or contorted when they render in the digital notebook. I’ve had to delete entire pages because I can’t get erase a random line that appears, and therefor cannot be translated. I hope the team works on identifying and fixing these bugs because it could otherwise be a great app. But so far it’s been a below average user experience (which I wouldn’t expect from a $300 pen)..Version: 1.4.3

✓ Io17 calendarI am not sure this app is working with ios17. It isn’t possible to connect to a calendar and the notes app does not show in settings - privacy and security. ✓ New Moleskine notes appWhile the original app wasn’t perfect, the newer version is much less user friendly to navigate the notebook on your phone. So many steps to get to January. You used to open the notebook and it opened to the last page you had edited. Also, the pages don’t just flip through anymore, each page has to load before you can swipe to the next. Also, it would be nice when you load a new notebook, that all pages automatically load instead of having to put a little line on each page. When you're out and you need to add a date via your phone but you haven’t yet added that page it’s inconvenient. And the new version no longer allows the pen to download in the background. I also have always had trouble loading a new notebook and customer support has been terrible. I call and explain. They want a video emailed of the problem. I send the video showing how the pen works with the old notebook but not the new one and never get any response after repeated emails. Then eventually I guess they flip a switch and I can use the next year’s notebook. This has happened two years in a row. If a notebook can’t be loaded Until a month before the new year, just say so! And the transfer from the old app to the new one was a joke. Never worked..Version: 1.4.2

✓ Old system worked betterIt’s slow or laggy, often doesn’t load up notes, difficult to organise notes(it has a tag system, but it doesn’t list them alphabetically like the old system). ✓ ShockingSo I have reported the fact that the pen just does not work multiple times, and honestly "turn it off and turn it on again" is really not very helpful - the question is, have we all just wasted our money or are `moleskin going to be bothered to get the system working? Right now it's sold under false pretences. ✓ OCR works well, app a bit poorly designedThe OCR works well, but cannot be saved as a master document file, so that it could be easy to edit - and the transcriptions have to be selected, copied and pasted on a phone into a file - it seems like it be much easier to edit on a laptop, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that. ✓ AwfulI had resisted the migration to the new app as the previous one worked well for me but worrying it might not work anymore I moved to the new app. Dreadful, I followed all the tutorials and instructions and whilst the pen does show up when connected to Bluetooth on the iPhone the normal transfers do not. Nothing I can do rectifies the problem. I have deleted, reinstalled checked firmware and emailed support nothing is working for me. ✓ Love the concept but…I love having a hard- and soft-copy of notes. I wanted to try the different modes of the device and found the following on the first day of trying it. 1) Live streaming to the app works fine. Most strokes were appropriately captured if you hold the pen properly. 2) Off-line capture only grabbed about a page’s worth of strokes before it quit capturing. I don’t know if the pen quit capturing or if the transfer of data failed when the app re-connected. This is obviously a problem if you depend on a soft-copy. 3) The best way to make sure it reconnects properly for a new session (meaning any time you turn the pen back on) is to force close the app, turn the pen on, then re-open the app. This is obviously a problem if you want to capture quick notes or fleeting ideas. 4) The app crashes without any notice as to why. Are error logs captured anywhere? 5) I have a feeling the app content is not being saved in iCloud, which should be the default. If I lose the data because my iOS device dies or it is stolen, I’m out of luck..Version: 1.5.4
✓ Awful app and awful helpThis app has not completed a single download from the pen since Oct 2022. It just goes into a loop and never finishes. Currently the pen and app are junk. And no attempt to get service or assistance leads to any useful responses. There is NO live help. And no customer service. Just automated emails that tell you to read the help notes.
