Runna: Running Training Plans for Negative User Reviews

Not FreeMaybe I didn't read the blurb correctly, but after going through all of the setup etc, after two weeks, I found out that you can't actually see any training workouts from week 3 onwards unless you pay. My mistake, but I feel that should have been made clear before I went to the trouble is setting up accounts and my information..Version: 5.6.2

It's a great app, but a few negativesI wish the playlists were also available in Apple Music, not just Spotify. Also, why does the app ask for my location at all times, and not just while using the app?.Version: 3.4.18

Ended up with tendonitisI signed up with Runna to go from a half marathon to a full, and I ended up with tendonitis at the beginning of week 4. I was hoping Runna would be advanced enough to adjust my plan to accommodate where I’m at, but it really just generates a plan based on what you put in and doesn’t recalibrate as you go on. I have a marathon at the end of September, and I tried to use Runna in mid May to get me started. It would only accommodate a 16 week plan without any way to bridge the gap for when I signed up and when the plan was set to start. When the plan finally started, I followed it to a T including the strength training and slow, easy runs. I don’t know exactly what went wrong, but I do know that my PT says to put my marathon on hold so I can deal with my ankle. After following many other well-established training plans and completing them without injury, I’m going to have a hard time ever returning to Runna. Maybe in a few years when the app is better tested and more flexible, it’ll be ready for the general public. Right now it feels like it’s still in beta which is a little scary..Version: 3.5.3

Runna ran me right into the groundI’m a runner that wanted to get back into a training program, so I downloaded Runna. I answered every question honestly and even added weight training to my regimen (which is exactly where I went wrong). It’s glaringly obvious that the strength training “plans” are poorly made and likely computer generated, especially since I was doing weighted forward lunges for every part of my body (even on upper body days). Needless to say, if your training as a runner and work those same muscles during every strength training workout, you’re going to over work the muscle. Luckily, I quit using this app before I did any permanent damage. However, I don’t think an app should be pushing “personalized strength training” when it’s not actually (or properly) offered..Version: 3.5.3

Great concepts, glitchy trackingReally useful functions eg trainer saying speed up / slow down for target splits but the distance / time tracking has been glitchy. Will capture a couple seconds of stationary time even when the tracking is paused, and add 15mins to your split for that kilometre.Version: 4.2.4

Paywall + ExpensiveI’m a high school student that’s been running for awhile, due to my location reaching under 20 below frequently I’m not able to run outside as often as I would want. So I got this app to help me with running inside and for the gym. I was excited to use the free features of this app but turned out that you have to pay for an EXPENSIVE subscription to keep using after a week. Which is ridiculous with how there are other FREE and BETTER apps like the Nike coach one. If you don’t want to pay over $100 a month either do it yourself or go to Nike. The fact that it never mentioned subscription until AFTER sign up is disappointing as well as I want to know what I’m signing up for and how it’ll access my notifications. This app is super disappointing and just not worth the money in terms of subscription. Don’t get the app unless you’re a super rich person..Version: 4.2.40

Free plans for longer than a weekI was so excited to finally find a free app that has great training plans that include strength training. Very disappointed that it allowed me to do 1 week and then ask me to subscribe to continue the training. Not every can afford to pay for a subscription in this horrible economy. Please do better.Version: 4.2.29

Great concept, iffy executionFirst off, the idea behind the app is amazing. I would still suggest it to people to use. I love the personalization and the detailed metrics along with the syncing feature on my Apple Watch. What I find a great amount of issue is the bugs within the app itself. Primarily, the Watch app. You either have to chose your phone or your watch to record your run. You won’t get as good of metrics on your phone but it will sync to your headphones 100% of the time. I personally like the watch due to the interval training screen on my watch so I don’t have to pull out my phone constantly when running. HOWEVER! My big big big issue with the app, is that the app on my watch will pick and chose when it wants to connect the prompts on my headphones (AirPods). When I’m doing interval that gets super frustrating. I’d really like the regular prompts to notify me since they switch every .25 to .10 miles and I always have to check to see if I’m on pace or not. However I don’t want to sacrifice the details of my runs and it’s really frustrating. There is limited options in the settings on the watch to make this work and I have not seen anything to help the issue. I generally think if I’m paying $20 a month for a service like this I shouldn’t have these many issues to be honest..Version: 4.2.12

Promising but still need improvementsThe app content and how they tailor every workout to your goals/needs and experience level is very good, you can tell it is created by people who now their stuff. The videos and readings are very helpful and easy to follow even if you’re new to running. The downside came in the tech side, when logging a workout after I finished the app won’t let me actually finish the workout, it got stuck and the finish button didn’t do anything. Tried closing the app and also restarting the phone and it didn’t work. Had to delete it. Additionally, I tried to log back in with my Apple ID and noticed that the first time it never works you have to do it a 2nd time in order to login. I lost the workout data and there is when you lost me, that is a core feature for this kind of apps and you shouldn’t sell premium or upgrades if the main feature in the app is broken. I’ll continue with Strava for now..Version: 4.2.18

50% good and 50% badUnfortunately the app has a habit of skipping certain blocks of your run when I hit pause and then resume again, it’ll skip from eg. the end of my 1st block, skip the 2nd block and fast track to my last block… it’s a bit frustrating!!.Version: 4.2.33

Exceptional quality; prohibitive priceThe Runna app knows how to get the most out of me. The workouts are perfectly planned. During every workout there is a point where I don’t think I will be able to keep the pace, but I have always been just able to power through. The watch layout and feedback while running tell me exactly what I need to know to stay on pace. I couldn’t be happier with the app in every way except that I don’t have $150 CAD per year to spend on a coaching app. I will be deleting it now that my week trial has ended..Version: 4.2.12

Pretty disappointedThe most frustrating thing about this app is the audio prompts do not sync to your headphones when you’re using your watch during a run. I’ve heard some people say it works with your phone, but then other metrics aren’t available. I would have remained a subscriber if this feature had been available/fixed for the watch app; especially pace notifications for going too fast/slow than intended for a given training session. Pacing is what I struggle with the most. The pace notifications did not work at all, and I had all notifications turned on. I also didn’t really get the impression that it was very personalized for me. Maybe I just didn’t use the app long enough to see those types of adaptations/adjustments to the plan. A bit of explanation about how that would work in theory, could’ve been helpful (e.g. intro video or message walking users through how and when the plan adapts to your performance, how long it takes to establish a baseline, way to provide feedback that it’s too difficult/easy?, etc.).Version: 4.2.45

Took all info before asking for moneyIt’s an automated plan generator. What’s the subscription for?!.Version: 4.2.12

If I were a rich man…This app has potential and I wanted to love it, but it’s seriously lacking value. The subscription is outrageous for what is offers, especially when compared to other running apps that have comparable or better features for less (Strava, Runkeeper, adidas running, NRC…) I liked the plans and that they are personalized, but Runkeeper plans are very similar, also personalized, and a third of the price. I like the idea of the community but it was sparse and posts seemed unanswered more often than not (probably because so few can afford this app). It was also missing the social features I enjoy most in other running apps (like Adidas and Runkeeper and Strava), virtual races and challenges. So ultimately I found that feature a flop. I like that it’s compatible with Apple Watch, but had syncing issues with Apple health and Strava which I found frustrating. I liked the interface and I liked the format of treadmill workouts, more than anything that’s what set it apart from other apps for me. It also is missing guided runs if that’s something you’re into. If the app was reasonably or even competitively priced I’d subscribe because I think it has potential and I did like the workouts. But I’m going to stick with my Runkeeper plan ($50/year vs $150). Even Strava is only $99/year, and it too has personalized running plans as well as much much stronger community features. I’m honestly at a loss where they came up with $150 compared to other running apps but oh well 🤷‍♀️.Version: 4.2.17

ElitistDon’t bother if you’re new or returning to running - the beginner level is only available if you’re already able to run 5k nonstop. You can put in your own time for this, but the training programs aren’t viable if this is over 40mins. Probably a great marketing ploy to only attract experienced runners to talk about their app, but drives away people that are just starting out. Super pricey in comparison to competitors that offer the same for free and doesn’t offer the same diversity of training programs..Version: 5.3.0

Latest update is horribleThis app was wonderful until the latest update. You can no longer even see an overview of the runs scheduled which makes planning life nearly impossible when you’re trying to incorporate long runs..Version: 4.0.1

Just not worth the asking priceFor £99pa. You could purchase a couple of incredible running books, some shorts, a new bottle and some energy packs. It’s a good app, it’s well designed and it functions well but it’s just not worth that. It’s not tailoring per se, or it didn’t feel tailoring when I reset plans and did different stats etc, and if you’re genuinely trying to lose weight or become a good runner invest the £16 a month/£99 a year on some good books. I can see why people would like this app, and for the week I used it it was interesting (though has no pacing coaching support for treadmills) But it’s appealing to the lowest common denominator. If you don’t follow the plan during times that you’re using it, you’re throwing away money really. On the plus side, and why I haven’t 1*’d, it’s a really nice app to use..Version: 3.4.1

Terrible and deceives youI was all set to run my 10k race. I was ready to start training. I made my plan with the app and was excited to get started. Then all of a sudden after I finish week one they decide to lock up my entire training plan. Now in order to continue my plan I gotta pay like 20$ a month. Would have loved to know about this before setting up my entire schedule around this plan. They scammed me. Terrible horrible app. Would give it 0 stars if I could. But one star is more than they deserve..Version: 5.5.0

Brilliant app but plans leave something to be desiredI throughly enjoyed the interface of the Runna app and found the strength training component a really nice add on. Unfortunately for me the plans just didn’t quite meet my expectations and therefore I’ve opted for another app that utilises AI to adapt your training plan to suit you. I can imagine the Runna app is perfect for a newbie who wants a bit of structure but if you’re wanting to really adapt your training to suit your lifestyle it is a bit rigid. I also personally found the plans to be way too intense - for example in a week of 33km I had one easy run (only 9km), a tough 9km interval session and a long run which consisted of a hard 5km effort in the middle. The 80/20 rule didn’t seem to apply to the plans and that is how I prefer to train so I’m at a lesser risk of injury..Version: 3.5.2

Good vision, unfinished productSo far the recommendations have been decent but not too different from the plans Strava already offers. The calendar integration is broken and I thought recording with their Apple Watch app would give me verbal cues when I go past my target zone but that also did not happen so it’s essentially the same as recording with the native Apple Fitness app. Overall, seems promising but unfinished product, probably won’t pay for it after the trial..Version: 4.2.43

Audio voice frustrationsI only used this for a two week free trial but there is a specific reason I decided not to commit. The plan for the two weeks I did was good, I enjoyed having training laid out nicely for me. For me it is the fact that when the voice speaks to you during your run, which is great for letting you know where you’re at (let’s you know too fast or too slow), it doesn’t pause what you have playing. I often run listening to podcasts and audiobooks and because it would talk right over what I was listening too I would have to pull my phone out everytime to rewind which was very annoying. Also I thought it was too repetitive and slow the voice. Just saying “slow down, current pace 00:00 is too fast/ speed up current pace 00:00 is too slow” etc would be great. Instead it reminds you constantly what that pace is meant to be. But I know what it’s meant to be, it just told me when I started this interval 2 mins ago. When I was listening to music it would get me out of the zone too easily as it pops up so frequently. I tried to find settings to make it pause my other apps or to speed up the voice but I couldn’t. this frustration while running is why I decided this app wasn’t for me..Version: 3.5.3

Not adaptable.Maybe I typed in my info wrong? Maybe I over estimated my ability (stated I can run a 10km often and understood/would be interested in some workouts or whatever that question was at the beginning and chose a recent time), but they had me running 3 “intense” workouts out of 4 runs a week. I choose the Running Maintenance program as I’m not training for anything currently. I’m fine with two workouts, an easy, and a long run for four days on as I understand there’s a decent amount of rest in between, but three seemed like way too much. I asked if I could edit it down and keep just two workouts a week but that’s not a feature they offer so unsubscribed. Disappointed because I understood this app to be for runners of all abilities, but that is not the impression I have gotten..Version: 4.2.14

Be careful and listen to your bodyOverall, I like the concept and functionality of this app. But I want to warn everyone not to blindly follow a training program that is not fully tailored to them. Listen to your body. I started a half marathon training plan on Runna at the end of December to improve my half time, I thought I’d feel amazing and strong, but after a few weeks in, my legs were constantly sore (not the good sore). I was worried I may get injured, so I reached out for help and advice, but my trainer suggested all looks fine with my times, maybe cut back runs from 4 to 3. I did cut back, but it was not enough. I got to the point I was in physical pain everywhere on my legs, and I couldn’t even finish one of my runs. I decided to stop running altogether, a week of rest later, still feeling absolutely terrible. I have 2 weeks left till my half marathon and at this point I am not even sure I’ll be able to run. I am insanely disappointed. Based on the symptoms I have, I am worried I may be at least in non functional overreaching or maybe even overtraining territories. Which takes months and months to recover from. I wish I never started this training plan. Please, be careful and don’t listen blindly to an app. Listen to your body..Version: 3.3.27

Honest reviewHonestly the app is great. Easy to use. I was so excited when I found it bc I’m looking to do a marathon and the app brings you through a easy and quick questionnaire about what your goals are. The first week comes around and while your running the app tells you what pace you need to go out by saying “slow down” or “speed up”. I thought that was an awesome touch. After the first week I was beyond excited to start week 2 and of course this is where my problem sits. As your navigating through the app their is no mention that I saw of a paywall. It’s $18 dollars a month for $100 for the year. A little disappointed as this is one of the more expensive paywalls I’ve seen but I’m not surprised. If you truly and really are dedicated to a goal of a race. This app is for you. If you are looking for workouts with no intentions of completing a race. Go to the Nike running club app. They have 300 free running workouts..Version: 4.2.42

App not working after updateApp won’t open..Version: 4.2.3
