✓ Fantastic - very valuable - one suggestionThis is/was some of the best $10 I ever spent. Kudos to these people. I own three of these in different languages and consider it a terrific resource. One thing they should improve. The quiz part is terrible. Words that nobody would use and way too many words that are the same (cognates) and don't really belong in a quiz. A list of practical words would be better. Plus when a word is a noun or verb and only one option is obviously a noun or verb that makes it kind of silly too. However, that is a small part of the app. The dictionary and conjugation functions are terrific. It would be great if there were some sort of clue on the conjugations to help understand what the verb conjugations categories relate to in English. Those various conjugation names aren't familiar to most people. Just a small suggestion there..Version: 6.1.65
✓ Manifique!I like this English French dictionary best of all the options in the app store because it has lots of features. First of all the dictionary has lots of translations and noun genders. You can send the translations by email which comes in handy with some friends. Sometimes I have them record pronunciation which I can save. I like the phrases and conjugations too. I can look up a verb in French and flip languages and use the history button to go straight to the English conjugation. I can work on vocabulary in my spare time with the quiz feature. So I feel like they covered all the bases except maybe audio but I emailed support and they said it’s on the way..Version: 4.3.1

✓ Very intuitiveThis is one of the most friendly Apps i've come across. Most of what you want is there at your fingertips. verb tables perhaps would have been nice, but apart from that is is very good at guessing what you are trying to do with language. you type and it knows if you mean french or english. it helps more still by giving various "case" uses e.g that word means that as in "trying to catch a train", or the other in "mowing the lawn" or still something else if you are "Shopping at Sainsbury's" i mean they are more sensible than that obviously.Version: 6.2.71
✓ Excellent French Dictionary AppVidalingua provide the best English to French Dictionary that I have found during my time learning French. The language team are always open to suggestions for improvements. They are also quick to respond. This is not just lip service; they have actually delivered on providing suggested updates. For example, a verb conjugate can be mysterious to a newcomer, especially when the verb is irregular. Vidalingua have solved this by including verb conjugates in the dictionary listing, so that the infinitive and the full verb conjugation can be easily discovered. If you need to purchase one French dictionary, make sure it is Vidalingua. I rely on it every day..Version: 7.3.12

I got the Ascendo dictionary which has been hard to stump. I found words like barbecue, brainstorm and specialized medical terms like lazybones ☺ Also avoided some “faux amis” like preservative, don’t try that! My friends use the word “dingue” all the time. I found it in the Ascendo dictionary with several translations but I like being able to add examples myself or make a note that I saw it in the movie Les Visiteurs. The pronunciation feature is quite good. It has helped me with difficult to pronounce words. I wanted a dictionary that was gigantic (meaning the largest number of words), I wanted one that would conjugate all the verbs, and I wanted one that pronounced all the words AND the verb conjugations. This app did it. I am thrilled with it especially since I tried several other more expensive apps prior to using this one. ✓ Lots of idiomatic expressions and noun genders make it greatI like that the Ascendo French dictionary has lots of idiomatic expressions. For example, the verb “avoir” is used in literally dozens of ways like “avoir besoin”, “avoir droit”, “avoir faim”, “avoir honte” just to name a few. I find that mastering these types expressions makes a big difference in getting understood by the locals. Another good thing is that gender is given for French nouns, ie “fourchette” is feminine “vin” is masculine. Gender isn't in many of the dictionaries for iPhone and you really can't get by without it..Version: 0

✓ Fantastic app and great customer service!I have had this app for at least 18 months and love it. I am learning French and it is my “go to” source for word meanings and conjugation. I attended language school in France last summer and impressed my fellow students with this wonderfully useful resource. When I returned from France, I must confess that I slacked off my French studies. When I opened it up a few days ago, I discovered that there was no sound. The pronunciation had been a key feature that I had relied on greatly. I emailed the company to ask about it, never dreaming that I would hear back. But I did in less than 24 hours! I was given a “fix” to get the French pronunciation until a final solution is found. I could not be happier. Individual Ratings: Ease of use, 4*: Very easy to use, flip function nice. Only draw back is if you can't spell it in French it doesn't find best match. Dictionary 2-3*: Could do with more words, a little limited. Would be nice to be able to search on notes made (i.e. 16 etre verbs etc...) or generally filter searches. Would be nice to search for a word in English, then double click one of the French results to 'flip' the translation... leading to verbs too would be advantageous Verbs 2-3*: Having verbs option is great, but could do with conjugations of verbs in more than just present tense, (maybe just the 3 mains ones would do). Categories 4*: Not much use for it but it seems good. Quiz 4*: It's nice to have the quiz option, to aid learning. Being able to add your own would be nice (e.g flash cards equivalent) but not vital. ✓ Delightful app and great dev responseI have three Vidalingua apps and I love them all. I don't speak French, but I come across enough French words and phrases that I wanted a dictionary that would allow me to get around in those texts. Bonus points if I could find a dictionary that would pronounce the words for me so I could hear the words in my head in future. This one does the trick --and more. I can attach photos to dictionary entries, as well as audio clips and notes. I love the fact that both languages appear together -- no need to swap languages to enter a word in one or the other languages. I also love the ability to choose the version of audio pronunciation the user wants: Australian, UK, or US. Nifty! Finally, the developer responded promptly and helpfully to my request for information on the app's privacy policy. I like the privacy policy (and wish developers would include those in description of app. But until they do, it's nice to find a responsive developer with a policy that's protective of the users' privacy.) The Ascendo dictionary tempts you with a shorter, free version, which itself is very useful. I found it so useful, in fact, that I bought the full version. At $10 it's not the cheapest app around, but I feel it is good value compared to, say, the Collins dictionary -undoubtably more comprehensive but probably more than I need for everyday use at $25. I have tried many apps — but I LOVE the consistent format you bring to these apps in the various languages. The BEST part — it is all beautifully linked. You type in the word you are looking for, and the app automatically finds definitions in whatever language you typed (without having to change the language, as most other apps require). Also, the VERB conjugations are wonderful! You look up a verb — click on "conjugate" in the upper right — and you instantly have access to ALL conjugations in all tenses of that verb. NO other app I have tried comes close to convenience for rapidity of verb conjugations (and I have tried MANY other apps). This dictionary is not as good for longer translations (I use another app for that ... ) — but for everything else, it is the best iphone/ipad app I have found for very fast and accurate translations and verb conjugation review. Thank you! NOTE #1 — The non-paid versions are inferior. But the adds go away and the dictionary greatly expands if you get the paid apps (well worth the money!). I work in a number of French speaking countries, including France and often find myself in situations where I need to interact with people who have no understanding of English.
