Shredder Chess for iPad for Negative User Reviews

Terrible opening bookIf you're into oddball openings all the time, this is the app for you. If, on the other hand, you don't enjoy playing the same obscure opening over and over and over again, steer clear. Out of ten games I played as white, Shredder replied to 1. e4 with g3 ten times..Version: 1.7.1

Good appI like this app - the meter is a cool function and so are the puzzles. I have HIARCS also and I find that it is a bit easier on that app to jump in and out of the analysis, so one critique of Shredder would be that I don't personally find the GUI to be very intuitive. Overall a good bargain for a nice software. It would be nice to somehow have a chess app that could help explain why a move is preferred rather than just numerical analysis.... But I suppose that's what a human coach is for. However maybe a developer could take the time to write brief verbal analysis of the chess problems themselves - this approach would be insightful for those interested in solving problems..Version: 1.3.0

Does not work in ios10Menus do not work in IOS 10, unusable until updated.Version: 1.7.1

Fix PGN pleaseReally like this app but when I want to get a computer analysis from Lichess it tells me that the PGN is invalid. Update and I'll change my review to 5 stars..Version: 1.7.0

BuggyPlayed a game against the app. Game ended, but the app won't leave the game so I can start a new one. Also, when playing puzzle mode, if I accidentally swipe the iPad menu up, the app closes. Please fix..Version: 1.7.0

Can't import .PGN?This is my favorite chess program to play against. I especially like the red arrow showing Shredder's opinion of my moves and the fact that it seems to make human-like mistakes. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow me to import standard chess game files from other apps or classic games from websites. That's more than a minor irritant for a chess program at this price. For that reason alone, I would recommend tChess Pro over Shredder (that is if you plan on purchasing only one chess program). When the developer supports .pgn imports, I'll give a 5-star rating..Version: 1.2.4

Put out to pasture??I didn’t review comments before downloading. Had I done so, I would have noticed no reviews more recent than one year ago. There’s only one of those and the rest are two years or older - a clear sign of neglect. Program performance and consistency also indicate neglect - IMHO. My first foray has been with the puzzles - which are “interesting” but frequently obtuse - with no explanations as to WHY one has managed to solve a puzzle. (Perhaps my lack of a Grand Master’s knowledge of the game is the reason I don’t understand - - but I don’t think so.) When one decides to play a position from the end of a puzzle to explore why a puzzle may have been solved, the program is completely bonkers - sometimes reversing board positions - sometimes not; sometimes playing automatically - sometimes not; and SOMETIMES making the most garishly amateur automatic plays so that it seems like an intentional loss is intended. I’m going to just move on. No point in attempting to contact a “support” department that must be moribund..Version: 1.10.0

Aweful uiYou have to tap the share icon to start a new game. The graphics are rubbish..Version: 1.7.1

Was my favorite app, but then iOS 8 came along...This was my favorite app, particularly for the puzzels. I have spent many enteratining hours with this execllent engine. But it hasn't worked since the introduction of iOS 8. It hangs frequently and is essentially unsable. An update has been promised, but there has been no sign of it. I hate to give Shredder one star, but until it is fixed it deserves no stars. Do not buy if you have already installed iOS 8. I am beginning to wonder if the developer is serious about supporting iOS, if not, he should remove the app from the store..Version: 1.3.0

Good chess app however ….An enjoyable chess app that can really improve your game however there is a few problems with it, firstly I think it should include a browsable openings database and second there is a bug in the puzzle section: when you complete a puzzle successfully and click stop in order to find the oppositions best move, you are unable to move any of the pieces as apparently there is no correct move, due to a window popping up saying " Sorry, this is not the correct move" even though in the bottom left hand corner it says " Find the best move for …" implying that there must be a correct move..Version: 1.3.0

Disappointed but hopefulI loved the light version on my iPod touch. Seemed like a solid program. Decided to wait and get the full version on my iPad. Should have stuck with the light. Probably remembered wrong, or got it mixed up with one of it's competitors, but I thought it had more. Like stepping through various openings (all it does is tell you the name if you happen to be using one that has a name). Also thought it had some sample games you could look at and walk through. While the engine is reasonably good, for some reason I thought I was getting a whole lot more with the upgrade from lite, but I definitely did not. Also, the frequent crashes is just an absolute killer. Was trying to work on my end game, and finally had a really interesting position to work on, and the app just closes (which inspired me to write this review). It lost all the moves that were made since opening the app, and this is hardly the first time it has happened. Always seems to happen on the really interesting positions I would have liked to go back and review. So, for a great casual game, stick with lite. For a powerful chess study tool, looks like I should have spent my money on something more reliable, and with more useful features and content. The latest patch does improve the informational content in regards to openings. Could use a few more sample games to make it truly powerful in that regards. Hard to say if the random crashes are fixed. Here's hoping they are..Version: 0

DisappointmentThis app is disappointing. The functions of endings and openings it claims are not as good or even been able to use yet. Very limited options also especially for settings..Version: 1.3.0

Grandmaster not so grand?Chess beginner here. Using this in tandem with the new [amazing] e+chess app to play through examples. I would expect Grandmaster level to not make basic mistakes but it fails at a basic king vs king+pawn ending, specifically Ch 1, example 5 in the Capablanca book that comes with echess. When I set it up and play vs white, the king abandons his pawn for me to take. WTH?! Repeated attempts result in the same outcome: white keeps abandoning the pawn. [update] Just bought tChess and it repeatedly plays the example perfectly capably at the 800 setting. Until someone can explain Shredder's failing at this I'm going to have to declare tChess the superior app..Version: 1.2.4

SCAM ALERT!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!Elo is only 2600 and plays like 1700. I have played several games against the engine and Shredder resigned every game but one. This app won’t teach you ANYTHING!! What rhymes with cam? (SCAM)👎👎.Version: 1.7.1

Gee, I don't understand all the great reviews.Shredder is 7.99...the most expensive chess app I have purchased. I would expect it to be above and beyond Chess Wise Pro (which is only 2.99) and it's not. It does not contain as many features as Chess Wise Pro. I'm truly disappointed. Maybe it's been designed for more expert players than myself, but I do not find it very enjoyable. I think the puzzles are very hard. And, everytime you make a wrong move you lose points, this is very discouraging for folks (like me) who are trying to learn to improve their game. How about some mate in 1 puzzles? Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with this app. I just think there are better chess apps out there for way less money..Version: 1.2

Buggy and terrible user interfaceI love the iPhone version of this so was excited to see this app when I got my iPad. However it’s obvious very little work has been done on this app to convert it properly. The most useful feature for me personally - position analysis - is gone. Setting up a position is really awkward in a tiny screen - why oh why not on the full screen? And there are bugs. The user interface has always been a little unintuitive in shredder but it’s really janky and half baked here. I guess there’s little chance of an update so I’ll keep using the iPhone version..Version: 1.10.0

No new game button!Such a dumb fail in the design of this game that there is no new game option on any menu! You have to scroll back all your moves through an entire game to get back to the beginning to play a new game! Duh!.Version: 1.7.0

ProblemsGreat app, but since latest iOS problem section freezes. No recent updates..Version: 1.3.0

Well-done Chess app, BUT...Shredder's iOS chess version is a well designed app. But the reply to a recent email I sent the company was misleading. Importing outside games was not added to this recent update. It still cannot show a move list which would allow you to quickly return to an earlier point to attempt a different move sequence. As a result, reviewing a game in Shredder is more cumbersome than Stockfish, tChess, Hiarcs, and ChessHD. The full-computer version of Shredder was just updated to v13 from v12 so I assume this app is stronger? The game's analysis function is nice but less useful than those of the tChess and "Analyze This" chess apps. It is hard to evaluate playing strength between the top iOS chess apps but Stockfish almost certainly is the strongest, and it may get an update soon as the full-computer version went from v7 to v8 a few weeks ago. Important - Stockfish is FREE. Shredder's value is its interface - the Puzzle Section is fun but a more extensive iOS "chess puzzle only" app is available and less expensive. The game play interface is easy to use(!) and attractive, and I enjoy the "game evaluation meter" over a simple number for whom is ahead in a game as seen in the other chess apps. Lastly, it is still possible that more database and game importing features will be added if the firm's recent email to me was accurate. I like Shredder and I do have hope..Version: 1.7.1

Best app out there but room for improvementIt is the best app out there but it much more clunky then iPhone app. Control panel located inconveniently at the top of the page. Seemingly haphazard placement of controls means toggling between different pages especially when playing consecutive puzzles. The whole thing feels slipshod and not very well thought out. Seems the whole thing could be streamlined for better of use..Version: 1.7.0

T Chess Pro still needed though...Shredder has one fundamental problem. It does not let me copy and paste the pgn of a game. "Ah," you might say, "but you can send the game out as an email attachment.". Well that is pretty useless on an iPad because Shredder cannot then read the pgn attachment back in!!! This is where t Chess Pro saves the day. It can read the attachment, DocsToGo-style. Solution? Just ignore Shredder, get t Chess Pro and save yourself all this hassle. Don't get me wrong, I purchased Shredder years back for the PC, and use it regularly there, copy and paste, the lot. But on the iPad, Shredder is a let-down..Version: 0
