Shredder Chess for iPad for Positive User Reviews

Impressive...After having bought the ipod version, I am glad I jumped to the ipad version as well, because Shredder on its large screen seriously beats any other computer chess solution. First, its size - almost that of a real chess board, and it can be played on a mobile device, I play it on my sofa or in the park. As this obviously is true for all other ipad chess apps as well, Shredder rules them all because of its impressive human-like gameplay, its various styles of characters, - and cos of having all the basics right (it can adjust to your individual strength, rate your play, knows all the openings etc). I can clearly recommend it, and also liked that fact that the developers got back to me within 24hours in response to a question I had. Only setback is for me that the graphics - although pleasant to look at - don't look as crispy as HD could look like, but maby that's just me.. Anyway: 5 stars, clear recommendation..Version: 0

Is a good program, but...Shredder has a very nice interface and a strong engine, but it seems it should include some of the features of the pc version for training, time control and variation analysis so that it can offset the relatively high price of the application...reason i am writing this is because if you download the FREE app Stockfish, i am afraid you will find perhaps a slightly better chess application. I hope shredder increases value in coming updates..Version: 1.7.1

No 2-playerThis is an excellent chess app and would be 5 stars if there was the option for 2-player games..Version: 1.2.4

Top three engine, best valueIf you're a serious chess player, you're familiar with Shredder, former world champ and still one of the top engines. Along with Hiarcs, Glaurung, and Fritz, this is one of the top four engines in terms of playing strength for the iPad. With the 1000 puzzles, the online 6 man tablebase for the endgame, and the opening tree with winning percentages, this is the best value of all iPad chess apps. If you're a serious player and are going to buy just one, this is the one..Version: 0

Could be even betterThis is the best chess app I've played, I like that the lower levels are not just hard levels with the odd REALLY dumb move thrown in to make it easier. However, the offer to resign every time I reach a relatively dominant position in a game is really annoying. This coupled with the game playing very poorly after offering to resign means I never get to close a game out properly and I feel this is effecting my own game and reducing my enjoyment of the app. You need to enable players the ability to switch off the resign feature..Version: 1.7.0

❤️❤️I’ve used this chess app for many years and it’s just great!!! No other app out there compares..Version: 1.10.0

Good app; could use a few refinementsI really like this chess app. It's very strong, has a nice rating system, when you set it for lower levels, it degrades play in a more realistic fashion than many chess games. It's a great app. Having said that, there are still curious oddities. * For example, the “new game;setup position; enter moves; start analysis” menu is using the “export” icon. That makes no sense to me. The iOS app uses the “+” icon, which while not perfect, seems closer. I’m not sure why the iPad and iPhone apps use different icons. * I wish it had cut/paste and import/export features to get PGN/FEN representations in and out of the app. * I wish the game database could (optionally) be shared between devices. Perhaps put it in iCloud? * I wish the iPad game supported multitasking (both split-view and slide-over), allowing me to read a chess book and analyze a game at the same time. * I wish the app supported annotations, tappable move list, etc. At the very least, given all of this iPad screen real-estate, show us more than two moves in the list at a time! But I still love this app. I think it's the best chess app out there. But it’s not keeping up with device capabilities introduced over the last few years....Version: 1.7.1

Darnbrook RoverI have have been playing chess for nearly 12 months and started on an electronic chess computer which I bought for my son 25 years ago. Then at Xmas received an iPad as a present and began downloading apps. I bought a few apps on chess and one of them was Shredder. I have had no glitches with it at all. I use the puzzle facility every day as well as playing games getting so much satisfaction from it and the value for money is outstanding. It has improved my understanding of the game so much, a brilliant app..Version: 1.2.4

Briliant!Great interface. The ability of the chess engine to mimic playing levels and auto adjust its level is perfect. Online endgame table base works perfectly. Highly recommended..Version: 0

Great!Simply a great app! Une merveilleuse application!.Version: 1.2.4

Top chessI use this every day. The puzzles are nice, and it looks and plays just awesome. Only game app I really use..Version: 1.2

Needs 3D board, autoplay, and opening book update. Please add a 3d board and add the option to see the opening book on the default playing screen next to the board, also the opening book is WAY out of date. An autoplay button is seriously needed to view .pgn files. Shredder is fun to play and has it's own playing style, sharp and unique..Version: 1.2.4

Full screen and excellentGreat. Simple to use. Quick response. Does not crash..Version: 1.3.0

Needs File SharingThe puzzles are good. The engine is reasonably strong. It needs file sharing so you can import pgn games..Version: 1.10.0

Shredder is excellentThis is a great Chess app. A very strong player and very well presented. I particularly like the possibility of using this to train with - the app can be set to play at your current level and pace you. To this end I would have like to see Chess960 playable in this app - it would make this the perfect training chess app. Buy this!.Version: 1.2.4

One of the bestGreat app to feel a little like you’re playing a human. The way shredder adjusts his skill level to match yours after every game is great. I love Shredder chess and have always been a big fan..Version: 1.10.0

Best offline opponentThe AI handicap is awesome. It adjusts its strength automatically to challenge you constantly even as you improve. When I'm not playing online with lichess, shredder is the next best thing..Version: 1.7.1

Top notch multi use chess programI've always been hooked on the tournament style play in chessmaster and have never been able to have fun using any other program....until now. Shredder plays a remarkably human game. The self-adjustment of the playing strength zeroes in on your sweet spot quickly. Games have been a lot of fun and I always look forward to setting up the board for the next battle. It also works very well for post-game review. I love the openings database. Leave the ratings gauge up as you play and you will get a visual clue when you hit a critical position in your game. Great for training. The big surprise for me though is the puzzles. What a great mix of exercises on all sorts of topics.Just perfect for the morning commute on the bus/subway. This game is an absolute bargain and justifies the cost of the iPad all by itself..Version: 1.7.0

Shredder is fantasticThis is THE chess program for the iPad! Adjusts very well to your playing strength and is a pleasure to use!.Version: 1.1

Still a FavoriteI have several chess apps on my iPad. I find that I gravitate toward two of them, coming back to play against Shredder all the time. Yes, the engine is dated, but I find that it plays a very "human" version of chess. Instead of chess engines that make stupid mistakes at lower levels, Shredder's lower levels make tactical mistakes to find and exploit. I also like the way Shredder tracks my ELO and can adjust playing strength to give me a run for my money. ELO ratings seem a bit inflated, but it's more fun for me to play at or above my ability. All I all, it's worth the few dollars..Version: 1.7.0

Great, but........It's great that Shredder has an app for iPhone. iPad and even Mac. However, what's missing is syncing. Why hasn't iCloud syncing been built into these apps? I should be able to start a game on my iPad and finish it on my iPhone or Mac..Version: 1.7.1

Runs with current versionNo issues.Version: 1.10.0

Great presentation and features.I would thoroughly recommend this app. The presentation and layout is beautifully clear and I enjoy other features like the tactics puzzles, access to a huge database of openings and endgames and a monitor to show you how well you are doing at a particular time..Version: 1.7.0

Best chess app in the store.Huge selections of puzzles, engine adjusts to your playing strength. Great graphics, after a game you can email for your deeper analysis. If this app would connect to my chessbase "play chess" account I would never put my iPad down! I use this app and have not touched my Fritz app since I bought it..Version: 1.2.4

TerrificShredder for the iPad is an absolute joy to use. The interface is very intuitive and the motion of the pieces is so smooth. If you know shredder on Mac you will be right at home here. It has a lot of default setting but they can be over ridden If they don't fit what you are trying to do at that moment. The playing strength is certainly beyond anything I'll need. Terrific program and a great value..Version: 0

Beautiful!!!!!The screenshots displayed here misrepresent grossly the true quality and stunning graphics. Truly professional GUI and gameplay is a joy. Glad I bought this. Love it in landscape mode. Sheer brilliance. Very, very happy with this purchase. Worth much more than $9..Version: 1.2.4

A strong chess program with lots of extrasShredder for iPad doesn't disappoint. It's a strong opponent and includes puzzles, analysis, move recording with email and more. Definitely worth the purchase price..Version: 1.7.0

Amazing!!!Best chess game there is on the app store. It adjusts the difficullty to your own level over time and has an incredibly good and realistic ai. lots of extra features and very cheap too. definitely worth getting..Version: 1.2.4

Good, but could be better. The latest version is a big improvement, (the computer no longer moves instantly during a clock game). However the style of play is not very 'human like' (see 'fritz' on the nintendo ds for one of the best human style computer programs). On the plus side there are several useful features, such as infinite analysis of the position and access to the online opening databases..Version: 1.3.0

AwesomeAt first I was sceptical about this app. It plays really well but the main thing is the puzzles module. Helped to sharpen my tactical play no end. It virtually forces you to play the proper combination of moves but then gives you a lower score depending on how many attempts you make in solving the puzzle. There are 1000 puzzles and the majority deal with middle game situations. Get this app if you want to improve your chess..Version: 1.2.4

Best chess app for iPad (longish review)I've tried a lot of chess apps so far, but this one must be the best one out there - hands down. Stunning graphics, great responsiveness and easy move input (the new version also brings quick-entry which I never missed but really like now it's there). The engine is stronger than I will ever play, but it makes for a nice sparring partner on the lower levels. The coach is fine, too. I just started visiting a local chess club, and examining the openings or coming up with a chess puzzle for the group is nice and quick and let's the other guy's netbook look really old. :-) I wonder if they had an iPad pre-launch to get this so well right of the box. Dropped them an email and they said they didn't. I didn't really expect them to answer at all but they responded within an hour or two, so I guess support is ok if you ever need this. Even the startup sequence sports a nice but subtle animation. Works both in landscape and portrait and used the given screen to the full extend. You can argue the coordinates on the board, but then, I prefer the larger (crisp) board to the shrinked down and blurry images of mostly all competitors out there. And I rarely switch them on anyway. So if you are looking for the one chess game that's finally both fun and powerful - this is probably the one you want..Version: 0

One of the best chess appsShredder’s user interface may have been overtaken by Christophe Theron’s Chess Pro based on the Chess Tiger engine. Despite its weaker engine, Chess Pro only narrowly wins overall as a better app due to better game analysis functionality that Shredder Chess also has. I would not recommend one over the other but rather getting both! Some of Shredder’s outstanding features are the simplicity and elegance of the user interface, ability to randomly alter the engine’s personality, automatic Elo rating adaptation based on game outcomes, ability to transmit games individually or as a collection of games in PGN format. Chess Tiger Pro currently cannot email as a collection of games but rather individually. Despite its age, Shredder remains one the best chess playing apps on iOS. It’s playing strength can automatically be adapted to the user’s playing strength if desired. There is an opening book. There is a basic position analysis function. There are puzzles. There is an indicator about which side is winning during the game. While not as good as a graph, it still makes it easy to detect blunders when there are abrupt shifts of the indicator. The biggest negative about Shredder is that it’s iPhone version is a separate purchase :-(.Version: 1.7.1

Great iOS Chess EngineGreat app for any level chess player. Unlike the iPhone App, Shredder HD has opening databases as well as endgame databases that make this app worth every penny. One thing that I would like Shredder to incorporate into this app is a move by move audio tutorial, much like Chess Master had in 2000. I found this helpful in elevating my gameplay and would love to use such a feature again..Version: 1.2.4

Great chess programThis is a great iPad chess app. Several different AI playing styles. After you play enough games to establish a rating it plays at your strength level. You can save and export games if you want to analyze them using whatever PC chess engine you use. Shredder also has an online chess server for a small annual subscription fee. Just a great app for iPad..Version: 1.7.1

ExcellentVery pleased with this app. Note that it does have a 2 player mode now..Version: 1.2.4

Shredder is great for fun and great for learningI am an avid student of chess, although not a good player yet. I have been extremely happy with Shredder on my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook. When I want to play a casual game of chess, I play on my iPad. The graphics are clean and pleasant, I can set the difficulty level that suits me, and Shredder records our game. Then, I email the game from my iPad to myself (a simple step), and analyze it later on my MacBook..Version: 0

Just what is neededGreat game I was looking for something to help me improve my game and replace my chess computer which was destroyed by my daughter. This is easy to use and set up and the way it improves it's game to match you is great. Never had it crash or freeze or do anything unexpected and the chess set "skins" are a nice touch but found my favourite and have stuck with it price is High if your on a budget but is in my opinion money well spent The only feature missing is the ability to have multiple users as I am trying to teach my daughter and for her to be able to play her own games would be nice.Version: 0

My third copyI like Shredder Chess so much I just bought my third copy, this time for the iPad. I especially like the fact that it rates your play, and adjusts up or down as you play. I am not a particularly strong player, so it has proven to be a great learning program for me. I am hoping that some of the features in the desktop version make it into the iPad version, since there is more screen real estate and memory (e.g. a database of games, or the ability to load such -- don't know how exactly it cd be done, but would be nice). The iPad version is worthwhile, even if you already have the iPhone version..Version: 0

The BestIf you should have a chess game on your device, this would be the one to get..Version: 1.3.0

Brilliant chess program but needs variation support to be perfect.Full PGN support including variations has been available for Windows CE based handhelds such as Fritz and Pocket Grandmaster. I just don't understand what is it about iPhone and iPad OS that none of the programmers have built it into their chess programs for iPad. Including this would make it a perfect program for chess study and analysis. The ability to connect to an online database with searchable games is also highly desired. I have already given the app 5 stars in anticipation that the developer of this brilliant program will bring these updates in the near future..Version: 1.2.4

Love itThis is the most played game on my iPad and the best money I have spent in the app store. This is great for newcomers as well as experienced players because the chess engine constantly adapts to give you a competitive game without beating you over the head with it's world class chess engine..Version: 0

NiceLiked this app especially the puzzles.Version: 0

My Favorite Chess app for the iPadThis is my favorite Chess app for the iPad, but there is room for improvement; read on... Pros: 1) It's easy to use 2) It has a chess coach and analysis 3) It has a strength bar indicating who has the advantage and how strong that advantage is. 4) It has puzzles Cons: 1) The UI could use a little attention A) It's starting to feel dated B) Some of the images are fuzzy, not retina or not pixel aligned C) The menu button is confusing as its really a Back button on a navigation controller. D) There is no warning when doing something that will make the game unratable. The $10 off coupon is nice but on the Mac I prefer the Hiarcs chess app as it has more features, is stronger and they seem to treat upgrades to a new version more fairly..Version: 1.7.0

Good but could be betterI think this application is pretty good but as a beginner I wish that there was some sort of way to select the difficulty level for the puzzles. I find that some puzzles seem easy but most are kind of beyond my ability at the moment. (I think I've managed about 30% of max points avg in 50 puzzles.) It might be useful if the puzzle difficulty changed based on your current rating playing against the engine, or if the difficulty of the next puzzle depended on your average score so far. It would also be helpful, as a beginner, if there were some way to browse the opening book (not just show the common "next moves" during a game) in order to better study openings. ALSO: YOU CAN PLAY WITH TWO PLAYERS! Just use the "enter moves" mode and both black and white pieces can be moved manually. You can't play with another player over the network, but this software isn't supposed to be a network chess server client..Version: 0

Shredder is greatI love this program. I have it on two iPads, two iPhones and two computers. I play it at least 5 times a day. My only real suggestion would be to allow the black pieces to flip orientation so it is more easy when playing against another person as opposed to the computer. At the cottage, I use this as the chessboard against my kids. Regardless, I love this program. It is my most used recreational app..Version: 0

Very good, one suggested featureThis is indeed a very good app for chess players. One suggestion - have the option to import PGN files (I.e. if there is a PGN file within a folder (say a Dropbox folder) there should be an option to open the file in Shredder. I guess that it means that Shredder should register itself as a native PGN file viewer within iOS. This would be a great help if someone has played a game and has a PGN file of that game, and uploads it into Dropbox. Then, he can import the game easily into Shredder and analyze it with Shredder's engine..Version: 1.2.4

Favorite chess app for iPadLike the random opponent and auto-adjusting strength options. Only request would be to rethink some of the button sizes and placements on iPad. The new game and hint buttons should have more descriptive icons, maybe larger buttons, and better placement. Seems wrong to have new game all the way to the upper right corner, and i sometimes hit the rotate board button when I want a hint. Minor nits with a well executed game..Version: 0

Best chess programI play this both on my IPAD and on my PC. There are so many features that I like that I could or do no have the time to name them all. Let me just say that for an 1800 player it is a great learning tool and partner. I love the APP and my dog laying at my side while I play. I can't ask for anything more..Version: 1.3.0

One of the Two BestChallenging play, with a ton of puzzles that prompt you to find the best move in a given position. Excellent interface that allows you to customize every aspect of the user experience—the computer's rating/level of difficulty, the board, pieces, background, sounds, etc. In my opinion, this and Chess Pro with Coach are the two best chess apps for the iPad for the money. Absolutely worth the 8 bucks I paid for it. Overall, I highly recommend this program—especially for the returning/intermediate player..Version: 1.3.0

Excellent app. Well worth the money. This app is great. I have the iPhone version also. It is amazing to have such features in a program for such a small cost. If you are interested in cheese, you will be happy you got this..Version: 1.2.4

ExcellentI have owned Shredder on my pc for many years. I’ve even won a few games. The iPad version is the best I’ve come across on that platform. Not quite as many features as the pc version, but excellent and quite well conceived..Version: 1.7.1

Shredder ChessThe original App was good, this new version's Graphics are great, totally seamless, clean, clear, and beautiful. I have used all of the top chess Apps and this one stands out. Good variation on the game play end, good within App help, very good support from the designer of the App, and last but not least it plays a great intuitive game. If this new version is an indicator of things to come from this App, I am hooked on Shredder..Version: 0

Great Brain Training.I’ve tried a few Chess Apps since 2015 on iPad. The puzzles on this I find addictive and engaging. Graphically the UI is nicer as well. Yes its only 2D but this has the edge over the others I’ve used before. I went so far as to get Shedder for my PC I was that impressed with this iOS version..Version: 1.10.0

Excellent OpponentAs a class A-rated player with no time for tournaments, I love playing against Shredder whenever I have an odd moment. It's better tactically than positionally, and a little too eager to bring it's queen out early on, and it doesn't always choose the best openings, so it's just like a human, with strengths and weaknesses. The improvements other reviewers suggest sound like they'd be very useful, and I hope they come, but meanwhile, I couldn't be happier with this app!.Version: 1.2.4

Best chess app availableI've tried all the competing chess apps and shredder wins hands down. Customise the strength and playing style of shredder to suit you. Puzzles are excellent bonus. Would like to see an independent volume control for shredder as currently it ignores the iPad volume unless put to silent. Also would like the ability to load pgn databases into shredder. Nice to have would be some opening, middle game and end game exercises. Thoroughly recommended..Version: 1.2.4

Great appIt has everything you need EXCEPT online connection. Would give it 5 out of 5 if it had this..Version: 1.2.4

Shredd Dredd is the LawShredder for iPad is an excellent chess app for chess enthusiasts. A very strong programme, which adjusts its playing strength according to how well you play - always enough to keep you on your toes. Lots of options for customising the app, including some very impressive sets of pieces and boards. I particularly like the "swingometer", which shows an assessment of the position..Version: 1.2.4

All Round Great App.This is a great App of a great game, well worth the money. Playing chess as an amateur you are always honing your game and no matter who you speak with, you are always told to get a copy of Shredder. The game is very good, but the actual teaching part of the program is exceptional. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to either play the game seriously or improve to a higher level..Version: 1.2.4

Best iPad chess programI would really like the ability to download pgn files. I would also like Larger opening book and ability to download opening books. Showing multiple move choices when showing analysis would be nice..Version: 0

AwesomeAll my complaints have been addressed in this update, its fast, responsive, and the new pieces look great! The defacto chess app is pretty much complete! Wish list would only be a chess tutor/teacher, more puzzles (!!!!!), and maybe grouping puzzles based on tactics. For an app that lacked updates for monhs, then having quick back to back updates, Im excited to see where shredder will be in another year! Keep up the great work!.Version: 1.2.3

Really good chess appThis apps is really good value for money. Love all the features that it has. I would definitely recommend it if you like playing chess..Version: 1.3.0

Well doneWhile feature-rich, the game focuses attention on the game itself. Being able to see move assessment as one plays is an excellent teaching tool. At varying levels, the games offer opportunities to be exploited, without blundering. I enjoy the games every time I play and I believe playing the game helps me to improve all of the time..Version: 1.3.0

Needs update for iPad 3 retina displayGreat engine but it needs update for iPad 3 retina display. Currently the peaces are rather aliased and don't look that good..Version: 1.2.4

I Love This AppI am not a particularly brilliant chess player, but I love doing the puzzles - A great app.Version: 1.7.0

Best chess app I've Ever usedShredder is top notch, it adjusts itself continually to your ability, it has a simple an elegant user interface and is by far the most used app on my iPad. Try it, it is well worth every penny..Version: 1.2.4

The BestShredder is a brilliant programme. I have tried them all and this one is simply the best in every respect.Version: 1.2.4

Precisely matches opponents to your playing strengthI have been playing various computer chess programs for 30 years. Shredder Chess is by far my favorite. Shedder Chess tracks your play and estimates a rating for you. It then adjusts its own playing strength to precisely match yours. These days anyone can make a chess program that can beat all but the best players. Only Shredder Chess matches your playing strength regardless of whether you are a pro or a beginner. Always providing an evenly matched opponent for you to play makes Shredder Chess much more enjoyable than any other version of computerized chess I have tried..Version: 0

Retina update finallyNow With the retina update (finally) this app goes back in being the best chess app on the App Store by a mile...Version: 1.3.0

Shredder rocks!I cannot tell you how glad I am that I bought this app. It has just the right combination of what you need and don't need on the iPad. I enjoy the fact that I can play without worrying about a clock. I can just concentrate on finding the right move. The puzzle is great, just to keep you on your toes. I can't wait to see what the next version of this product will look like. Keep it up..Version: 1.2.4

My favorite chess app just got betterThanks for this update which includes chess clocks. Those Shredder for iPad users who are accustomed to playing while playing music on iPad in the background should know that with the update, this is only possible if the Shredder sound effects are turned off. This is because in the update the sound channel was changed from the ringer/effect channel to the music channel (as Eiko Bleicher informed me when I inquired about this). Absolutely a fantastic chess app..Version: 1.3.0

Needs PGN import featureI really like this app. It has some nice features but it is missing one important thing. The app allows you to email PGN files from the app but does not allow you (as far as I can tell) to import PGN files. Sure you can input them manually but that's painful. Five stars if they fix this issue..Version: 1.2.4

Shredder is amazingSo amazing that I'm giving it 5 stars even though I just paid full price again for the iPad version, which is what I thought I already had. Shredder is awesome; iTunes' terrible interface (not telling you whether your download is going to be free until AFTER you click Buy) is complete garbage..Version: 1.1

Good programI downloaded this chess app on my wife's I pad it has many features rated game chess puzzles nice board ect.I also have hiarcs and stockfish chess genius and crazy bishop.Shredder has the most features out of these chess apps. However the only downside is that the rated play feature tends to over rate your play for example if your playing it on 1700elo it players more like 1300elo.Shredder used to be the strongest chess engine for Pc.But for some reason the iPad version does not seem as strong as I tested it against stockfish and hiarcs both played much stronger on the I phone than shredder did on the ipad as both hiarcs and stockfish won shredder by 3 games to nil the pc version of shredder 8 also won 1-0 on a P3 computer.Shredder is still a very good app to have so 4stars one star deducted for its inaccurate rated game feature..Version: 1.3.0

BrilliantThe scope of this app is quite amazing, probably everything you could ever want from a chess program. It can make chess as simple or as complicated as you want. But at the core it can just be a game of chess which is easy to play and can last as long or short as you want it too. Highly recommended..Version: 0

Excellent Chess!!!This is the most fun I've had playing a game of chess against a computer in years! Absolutely great chess system, one of the best I have ever seen - for an iPad or otherwise, on ANY platform! It learns your skill level with every game, adjust itself based on your playing ability, giving you your playing level score in each instance. It then adjust itself to keep it just on the edge of challenging the next time you play it - never making itself too hard for you or too easy. Every time I managed to win, I felt a real sense of giddy accomplishment! For $8 this is one app you'll not be sorry you purchased. If you're a fan of chess, then you can do far worse than plunging for this great app!.Version: 1.2.4

Very good chess appSlick, good looking, professional, entertaining chess app..Version: 1.2.4

Like it a lotVery nicely done and worth it. Would like to see the PGN import feature. Would also like a better way to change Shredder's ELO rating. When I remove my finger from the ELO slide bar it inadvertently changes to a different setting. Would like to be able to organize saved games in multi level directory structures..Version: 1.2.4

Room for ImprovementThis is a very nice app, for all the reasons that others have described. But to echo the complaints, with a view to encouraging some improvement in the next version, there should be 1) an ability to import and export games in pgn.; 2) a games database; and 3) an openings database. There is an opening book that can be accessed while playing an opening,, but it would be better to have a database of openings that one could go into, select the Sicilian Dragon, and pull it up to study. Shredder is a leader in chess software, so should do better - the tChess Pro app, while not having as strong an engine, has all three of these features..Version: 1.1

My favorite appThis not just my favorite chess app, this is my favorite app. I use it constantly. Not because it has the strongest AI, the prettiest graphics, or the best interface, but because it has the most HUMAN AI I've ever played against. On top of that, it tracks your rating and can automatically adjust its strength based on your rating - it's addictive, like tracking achievements in other games. If you are a weak to moderately strong player (<2000 Elo), Shredder really will help you improve because it gets itself into natural feeling positions appropriate to the strength it's set at. This allows you to practice openings, tactics, and end games in a progressive fashion which leads to real learning and improvement. I have 5 chess apps on my iPad, 1 on my phone, and 2 on my workstation, and Shredder is by far the most satisfying to play against because since starting to use it I've started to play noticeably better against real people, and that's what really matters to me..Version: 1.3.0

Best!Simply the best chess app. I have ever seen! The program's self-adjusting playing strength sets up to play @ an ELO about 100 - 150 points above your demonstrated playing strength. Statistically, that suggests that you are only going to win about one in three -- unless you IMPROVE! Which you will!! The thousands of little puzzles will sharpen even the master's tactical eye, and razor hone your game! Simply terrific!! Definitely fun!.Version: 1.3.0

A truly fantastic appThis is a great app, if you want to improve your game or just kill sometime this is perfect. Even if your not a chess player it's such a well written and implemented app you should have a play on a friends version. It really is that good..Version: 1.3.0

Brilliant!!I can't praise this app enough! It has 99% of what you would want in an iPad app. You can play against the computer at any level of skill and the computer will adjust it's strength to give you a strong game. if you are new to chess, it will reduce it's strength, warn you when you've made a bad move, show you the legal moves, etc. For more experienced players, it will increase it's strength if you win a game & decrease it if you lose. It adjusts your ELO after every game. There are also 1000 puzzles to play in puzzle mode, sharpening your skill at quickly discovering combinations and tactics. The longer it takes you to find the right move, the more points you lose. Finally, it has a two-person mode. Want a game of chess with a friend but no-one has a board? Drop your iPad down and off you go. You can save games and email them to yourself (or to Evernote) for later analysis. The only thing missing seems to be online play. Combining this app with Chess With Friends would be the bomb. This app is totally worth $10..Version: 1.2.4

Excellent! At the time of writing Shredder is easily the best chess app. Amazingly good value. Definitely have to recommend it to any serious or club chess player. Good fun for beginners too..Version: 0

Black and whiteI do hope to add playground as the traditional black and white squares. It is amazing ...Version: 0

Great app!Works great..Version: 1.7.0

A pleasant surprise for (mid-level) club playersThis is a great app for strong players: a good opening book (though it is no encyclopaedia), strong play level, good auto-handicapping, and the tactics puzzles are excellent. I had low expectations and did not think that an iPad would give me a good game: this pleasantly surprised me. I now rarely use the “Chessbase” programs on my PC but prefer to sit either in my armchair or in bed with this..Version: 1.1

Clean ui and graphics, fun puzzlesI bought tchess pro first- really left me wanting more. I decided to give shredder a try and glad I did. Much cleaner ui and full iPad rotational support which can't be underrated. I tried the puzzles first, an hour flew by before i knew what hit me. Glad you guys incorporated that into a chess game. I'm an intermediate player, so i cannot comment yet on the challenge of the AI, but I will be spending most of my iPad chess play with this app versus the competition to find out. Like the competition, it let's you analyze the known openings which i always found fun. Tchess pro's clunky interface made this hard to do, but shredder does this very intuitively and without any button presses. Great board and piece customization. No 3d mode but I'm seriously not missing it. Again, keep up the good work on this app, love to see some enhancements down the line too..Version: 0

Very impressiveA very well constructed chess app- fantastic. Particular highlights are the meter that tells you how good a position you are in, and the intelligent way the computer increases the depth it looks into the game to give you a harder match Thoroughly recommended.Version: 1.2.4

Fantastic on iPad.Shredder for the iPad is excellent value, at only 10% of the price for the PC/Mac/Linux versions and it still plays a very strong game. It doesn't eat battery life too much either. (At reasonable ELO ratings anyway I haven't tried it above 1900) :P It has a great strength setting, the mistakes are very human-like. The tactical training (puzzles) are fantastic; and it has a great "continue from here" feature to see if you can maintain the advantage to the win. Ideas for improvements? I think the puzzles could be enhanced to very good effect for openings and endgame training: 1. Although the openings database is large, it would be great to see some kind of openings training feature. Perhaps being able to set an opening repertoire for the computer to play and some kind of tactical training for openings blunders for stronger casual and weaker club players. 2. Also some kind of endgame training would be useful. Being able to select a from a range of endgame types. 3. A bigger selection of puzzles would be fantastic too (apart from the expansion that would be necessary for 1&2 above). 10 puzzles a day only lasts for 3 months. I would certainly be willing to pay and add-on fee for the extra content..Version: 0

Not just chess. The best offline package.Definitely the best I have seen for an overall offline chess package. If you really want to play against other people online, then try something else. I specifically like the puzzles. When a puzzle is complete, you can continue playing from that position, which I find a lot of fun..Version: 1.2.4

IOS 10 updateGreat app that has been updated to restore functionality in iOS 10. Probably the best all-around chess app in the iOS world. Solid and proven engine, reasonable features (though a few things like the ability to save info to iCloud or Dropbox would be helpful), and with the most recent update, it runs pretty fast again..Version: 1.7.1
