More serious are a few bugs. One is on occasion after I move, one of my pieces, usually a rook disappears off the board! This usually happens when I am in a winning position. If it had consciousness, I would believe it was a ploy to stop the game - laugh. Certainly for most games it is excellent. Lightning fast even set to strong. It does not appear to follow any book openings, but that makes it the more unpredictable (and difficult). I hope the developer can cure these odd bugs. The reason why I don't give a 5 stars is due to two things I would like to see... One would be the possibility of switch side with computer while playing, one very useful tool for educational purpose. ✓ Clear and easy to useAs a beginner who just wants to play against "the iPad" and against family this app is great. Clear board, pieces easy to move with very useful undo feature. Changing the level of difficulty is very straight forward. Occasionally computer acts so fast I do not see what it has done and have to use undo feature it would be nice then to be able to redo move. As a beginner I like to see which pieces have been removed from the board which you do when playing with real set. When playing against a human being it can be confusing for second player as pieces all face one way. There is a switch feature available but it makes me giddy. This may be the convention but it would be good to have option to have pieces face player. There is no hints or tips which would help me. I am hooked on this app at present and do like the fact it is clear and uncomplicated. I can just get on and play without lots of options..Version: 1.20

✓ Very niceI am just learning how to play chess. I learned how the pieces move and how the game ends when I was a little kid, but now I'm learning how to actually play the game and win. The computer is a very harsh, but excellent teacher. The difficulty setting being an unlabeled slider makes it tough to call my current level, but I have the dial on around 50% of maximum difficulty, and I win one out of every three or four games. Once I can consistently win at this level, I will bump it up from there. I can't imagine how brutal the max difficulty will be, but I'm excited to get there..Version: 1.20

✓ ChessI haven't played chess since high school so I really did not know what to expect. I like that you can raise the difficulty level as you get more comfortable and improve. I also like that the computer learns from your playing habits to change how the computer thinks out the moves and anticipates what you will be doing several moves ahead of the opposing player. I try to play twice a day so that I can try different moves and keep the computer guessing just a little bit..Version: 1.20
✓ AlrightI think this is a nice chess program, it's simple, sound effects are soft and fitting, the music is calming but could get annoying to some and that's no problem because sound can be muted. I find two things that I think could use improvement; The AI of the computer opponent and stalemates. The comp is a 10x10^ grandmaster at just 50% difficulty, it's as if it literally sees every move and then thinks 100 turns ahead for every possible out come.. Ok, that's an exaggeration, sort of. Turning the AI down to far can cause it to make moves that even a first grader probably wouldn't make. So it can be tough to find the difficulty that's "just right". The AI I is forgivable because you can play a human, but what I find infinitely frustrating is the conditions in which the game declares a stalemate... Honestly I don't think it should ever be calling a stalemate for the player. Let a human decide when it's time to call a stalemate through the menu button, otherwise it can be very frustrating to be stopped in the middle of a match that may be quite enjoyable and most certainly is not a stalemate. There were certainly legal moves to be made in many of the matches that this premature call was made in, which is very disappointing when it happens..Version: 1.65

✓ Very good, could still be improvedThis is a very good Chess app and it’s hard to fault its gameplay (others have commented that it plays an aggressive game rather than ‘thinking far ahead’; thats true, but perhaps changing the difficulty and ‘think time’ settings would affect that, I don’t know). The room for improvement comes in the area surrounding the gameplay itself. As others have said, I would like to see which pieces have been taken by either side rather than having to either remember the tally in my head or calculate it from what’s left on the board. Also, the graphics for the pieces do not seem as high resolution as they might be – individual pixels are clearly discernible and, although this is in no way jarring, I feel that my retina-screen iPad is capable of displaying better graphics than are provided here. The other big thing that I'd like is the ability to concede defeat, ie. surrender. If you play several games in a row the app keeps score of how many you have won and how many the computer has won. If I see that I have been out-strategised and defeat is inevitable I currently have two choices -- play the game out, or select ‘new game’ from the menu. However, selecting a new game does NOT credit the game that I have just been beaten in to the computer’s score. A ‘surrender’ option to end the game immediately and add it to the computer’s tally would be welcome. Other than these small quibbles, a thoroughly excellent chess game and great value..Version: 1.20

The slider that sets the difficulty level should at the very least have graduations on it but the graduations could actually indicate the approximate ELO strength you are playing against which would make this the absolute best chess app ever..Version: 1.65
✓ Chess ReviewGreat, simple clean graphics. Several issues which would be great on an update: 1. Player cannot make the 'castling' move although computer can. 2. Sometimes when in checkmate, the computer says check only, and you have to exit game. 3. iPad does not have sound, whereas iPhone does. ✓ RoyAs a 75 year old learning chess I find this App invaluable. It is a joy to use, with the App not allowing you to make incorrect moves and combined with the undo button it is very easy to learn the game. My only comment is I would like the pieces to be more obvious, pieces can be mistakenly identified. All in all, a excellent app, well worth the money..Version: 1.10
✓ Great Program!I'm not an expert player. I'd call myself a middle level player. For me this program offers enough challenge to maintain my interest and it is on my iPad! The graphics are good and for the price it is hard to beat. I have not experienced any of the bugs some have mentioned. The only minor bug is that occasionally a series of games is lost and the game counter starts over. I've never had a problem during a game..Version: 1.65
