✓ Perfect practice appI recently decided to pull out the old iPad apps I have for guitar and make use of the metronome again for practice. All of them work fine but I began to ask myself some questions. Why can’t I have some sort of count-in? Why can’t I organize things better for practice and have multiple BPM sessions with different time signatures? I know, I know. I’m being picky but I was a little annoyed by these “missing” features in most of my apps. I had noticed that a friend of mine was using PolyNome and he thought highly of it so I thought I would give it a try. WOW!! I was stunned at how complex this app was and how flexible it could be. I can’t find anything so far that I can’t set up for an efficient practice workflow. There is a bit of a learning curve at first but lots of videos and docs make the learning easy. This app helps me structure my practice, track my progress, and really think about the notes I need to play when I'm focusing on my technique. It reminds me of the ol' drum machines, capable of programming an exact groove, like The Purdie Shuffle, for instance. Dial in the swing amount, learn to play between the cracks-where it feels the best. Great for practice or gigging; you can set up playlists. Use it for keeping time (Duh), or for inspiration. Don't know why anyone would want more than what's offered here. It’s not just for music; you can get your proper tempo for a golf swing, either real golf or XBox Golf. Probably work for other sports too. If PolyNome won’t do something, I doubt that you need it to be done. You get an almost instant answer from tech support from the man himself, Joe Crabtree. PolyNome is built by a drummer FOR drummers. There’s a place for others to add to the library. You’ll see things like the “Purdue Shuffle, the “Take Five Vamp,” “Come Together,” “Good Times Bad Times” and so on. ✓ Nothing else comes close!I used to use Tempo Advance for counting off songs at gigs and for general practice. It did the job but I found many elements of it frustrating. PolyNome does an amazing job when it comes to creating set lists. It'll tell you how long your set is going to be as you're adding songs and will even let you AirPrint an amazing looking setlist right from the app. No more resizing fonts in MS Word! I now have saved setlists for all my bands with notes for each song. Instead of a basic click my count-ins are the actual grooves I need to play! I use it for all my practice too. I can see charts of what I've worked on along with the daily log notes I've added. I've been inspired with Presets I've downloaded from the Public Library (a great resource). ✓ The best metronome app!This is the best metronome app, I’m not even sure if I can call this a metronome app, this is a highly customisable drum machine/instrument practice app, just make sure you take the time to read the tips on the help section of the app and watch Joe Crabtree’s video tutorials online on how to use the app, as I, myself got confused the first time I use the app, and left a slightly lower review before, but it was my fault for not taking the time to browse the help section and not watching Joe’s video tutorials of the app online, so I stand corrected and changed my review accordingly. Very useful features such as creating your own drum patterns, odd time signatures, polyrhythms and random muting of beats, stop watch and auto logging of your practice time, daily journal and the ablity to generate a report of your practice and playlist on a PDF fomat, the polynome public library where you can download pre-made drum loops and presets and playlists and much, much more, this really is the ultimate practice tool for a musician, this app really encourages me to practice more. (No more taping a set list to the floor.) I'm in the habit of noting who starts the song in the title of the preset so if we pull up a song we haven't played for a while I know who's doing the intro. (Especially if it's me!) I've set some songs to give me 8 bars of tempo then stop. That lets me set the tempo up front for the band but still lets the song breath. I’ve logged almost 1000 hours in 2 years since I got it and my drumming has progressed further than I could have imagined. I was never really good with reading music but through using this app, I can now sight read music and transcribe difficult drum parts. On top of that, I actually had fun doing it. ✓ Generally greatLots of great ideas, but a small UI change would make it much simpler in the middle of practicing IMO. It'd be great if each subdivision could be edited directly with a scroll wheel selector. Currently, you need to tap the left or right rhythm, select the new value, confirm, then go back. The other options in that menu to change accent/sound/volume are (in my case at least) used very very rarely, and could probably go in their own section. The meters are the heart of the app IMO; whether it's a woodblock or click is secondary :) Sometimes I just want a straight click, and having the scroll wheels would let me reset everything nice and fast. ✓ Best metronome app I’ve ever seenFor me, the price that you pay for this app is worth every single cent. It is very versatile. For one thing, the variety of sounds included in this app makes it so that you can always find a sound that you can hear over what you’re playing. For another, the ability to play two independent patterns allows for the creation of complex polyrhythms or really intricate drum beats. Additionally, the playlist function allows you to create large, non-repetitive passages. These three features have been invaluable to me when learning percussion parts because it allows me to seamlessly switch between meters. On a few occasions, have even programmed whole sections of my part so I can play along slowly.
