Paper by WeTransfer for Negative User Reviews

Sleeping on a major glitchI have been using this app from its publication, and I am subscribed to Pro version. It is very good, visually appealing and very useful — when it works. Their last update introduced a major glitch (it you’re working in a file belonging to the notebook set up for cloud syncing, the app keeps deleting your new work and replacing it with the previous version, because the programmers, inexplicably, set restoring as the default action!), which effectively deletes your current work. I contacted their team and they admitted the problem and suggested a workaround. But that workaround is bad for several reasons and they have still not fixed the issue. More than two months and no update yet. I understand that WeTransfer BV has other things to do with file transfer, but this level of ignoring customers is inexcusable..Version: 5.4.2

Mostly GoodThe app is useful good and aesthetically appealing but the fact that you can’t add more than one photo to a page is one of the only annoying things. I also got the pro version recently and I am having trouble cutting and pasting and it’s bit laggy. On the most part the it’s a fun tool and (suggestion: good for bullet journaling)..Version: 4.2.9

App could’ve been greatThe whole app is genuinely good, if you pay for its subscription. The app is very limited to its free users. Wouldn’t recommend it to be honest.Version: 5.4.1

I have a good ideaI find this app quite good for drawing which is quite rare for a free app. When I went on this app for the first time in a while I got really excited when I saw the new notebook store and all the cool activities but I was annoyed to notice that I need to pay at least £1.99 to get one. I think you should lower the price of credits and make it possible to get free credits every now and then. For example it would be AMAZING if you could create a daily reward system where you can get a free credit every 24 or 48 hours. As many people cannot spend money on your app and you would get many 4-5 star reviews if you did that. That is why The new update is pointless to me as I cannot spend money on apps. I hope you consider doing this as everybody would appreciate it!.Version: 4.5.6

Good app but..Pay every year is too much specially $15.Version: 4.5.5

What a shameUsed to love this app as a kid - I drew so much and brought my iPad everywhere to draw, my dad bought me the upgrade and I loved the cool new tools they brought out. As I spent more time on it he bought me the stylus (back when it was still Paper 53) Now everything’s so different and unnecessarily complex. I can’t redeem my purchases because the upgrade I bought doesn’t even exist anymore, and instead of a one-time payment it’s a subscription. Awful. It’s not even a very good drawing tool anymore, it feels like it’s more aimed towards charts and business graphics rather than the fun painting tools it used to be. Now I’m stuck with their old stylus which I used to love using. It’s not even supported on their app anymore. I would absolutely still use this app if we could go back to older versions, but as it stands now it is not even a fraction as good as it used to be..Version: 5.4.1

Can't import picturesHow does this app not allow you to import pictures onto pages?! It's really surprising. Don't get me wrong, otherwise I absolutely LOVE it, but being an app for sketching and drawing and designing, a function to import a pic for inspiration or to hold important details or memories to create a journal or travel log would really fill a giant gaping hole in this app. I feel like it's incomplete without this feature - otherwise it's five star, I bought all the brushes and colour mixer in about 10 minutes of first opening this app..Version: 1.2.5

What a disappointmentSo... I looked at some of the reviews and I thought ‘oh this looks good’. I watched the videos and looked at the pictures and thought this looks amazing. I use other apps for drawing so the collage feature was what I was really attracted to. But then to learn that I have to ‘join Paper Pro’ to cut things out? Really disappointing. I also hate that you have to have a subscription to unlock features. I’ve used other apps by WeCollect before and loved them, without subscription, but there’s nothing that sets this app apart from the rest unless you pay for pro. Can we just have an upfront payment please? All in all, I was thoroughly disappointed by this app. Don’t get it unless you’re prepared to buy Pro..Version: 4.6.1

Bad UpdateThe update changed a lot of things. And those changes are changes that I don't like. First of all, they changed the books to just a whole lot of papers which makes everything confusing. Plus when you draw, you have to swipe up the tools menu just to rewind. It was easier to just rewind on the spot. Also the normal zoom tool was easier because it gave you a pointer to see the middle. And you could zoom around the page. But now you have to put two fingers on the screen. This is my favorite drawing app but this update was bad for me. I would give a five star rating but because of the update, I will give it a three..Version: 3.0.0

Nice but......Undo feature is awkward, you have to tap with two fingers and make a circle, it was time consuming because if you over turned it the mistake will pop back. Also, what is it with company and subscription now a days, I just wanna make a one time purchase 💔.Version: 5.0.1

Gradually improving....Art tools are simple and easy to understand and you can create some lovely drawings/paintings. Limited in terms of sync /import features, I understand they’re working on this. No facility to import .png or other files from Dropbox or anywhere else. Only from photos. I use Ipad. Crucially for me, scissors feature won’t successfully cut /copy sections of imported photos. It just cuts out stuff that you’ve drawn/painted within the app on your device. Just purchased 6 month upgrade to Paper Pro but as yet can’t see much that’s different. Hmm..Version: 4.0.11

My poor little stylusThere once was a stylus, loved by the world. It had a eraser, rubber tip, unique design. It was even dubbed by some to be better than the Apple Pencil. I owned it and I loved it. I took care of it, I feed it, I tucked it in at night. And guess what they did to my poor poor innocent little stylus. They stopped developing its SDK. Even removing the option to connect it in their app. Now my poor stylus was heart broken. Having no purpose in the world he sat in my drawer. But I discovered a purpose for it. Autodesk Sketchbook still supported it. I could use my little stylus to draw. But to my horror they had stripped away its features, making it so the eraser no longer worked, removing pressure sensitivity. Now I must draw without its key features. But I will not let go of my little stylus, for he has gotten me through much. I refuse to enter the world of the Apple Pencil. Please 53, WeTransfer, whoever you are, at least add the option to connect the pencil. We loved it, we paid for pro, and you betrayed us. Me and my little stylus beg to support it once again..Version: 4.6.0

Impossible to resize selectionIt’s mind boggling to me that you can select, cut, move stuff around but not resize it? I’m trying to use it as a sketch noting tool and moving/resizing stuff is part of the process, happens all the time!.Version: 4.3.6

This app is painful to look atI downloaded this app on my iPad when I was only 14 or 15 years or so in age. It had a community I adored called Mix. I remember back then, it had journals and it had only few tools. The rest had to be purchased. I watched it’s slow terrible death to the very end. And I’ve watched this app rot now for several years. My art has been lost time and time again on all of my devices which is an awful shame. I’ve archived so much of the art. Now a subscription is necessary to use the tools? Seriously? And my pencil by fiftythree is no more than a useless souvenir of the best times of my life. Im 20 years old now. I have no reason left to even bother with the defaced app that had once meant the world to me. I’m moving on. RIP Mix. I really stuck around hoping by some miracle it would return to us. I’d forgive everything, heck even the subscription crap wouldn’t bother me so much if only I could have my community back..Version: 4.5.2

Won’t let me restore my previous purchase to new deviceI’ve had this app for a number of years now and I like it, but I can’t give it higher than 2 stars for the inability to restore my premium purchase to a new device. I don’t use the app all that much so I haven’t been keeping on top of the updates, but I got an ipad pro months ago and decided to move my sketchbooks over this new tablet. Turns out the option to restore from older versions will no longer work without having to pay for the content all over again with their subscription model. Thanks but no thanks. It’s ridiculous for a sketchbook app to put their tools and syncing behind a subscription paywall. I used to use this app and the Bamboo sketchbook, as I liked both, but now I guess it will exclusively be Bamboo since they haven’t yanked the rug out from under me..Version: 5.4.1

Version 4 disappoints enough to leave PaperI have been using Paper by FiftyThree since its initial release, to sketch ideas for creating icons or other art, but was soured by their rewrite of the app in version 4, with many necessary features omitted until they can get around to adding them to the rewritten version, and a broken workflow and UI for their copy / paste function that I would use constantly in all previous versions but now no longer want to touch. I have explained to them how this function is broken, but no fixes have been released. Fortunately, a major revision of the Concepts app, version 5, was released during this frustrating period. I had tried version 4 out but didn't catch their vision—until I spend some time learning Concepts 5. I have been hooked by 1) infinite canvas, 2) multiple layers, and 3) precision shape creation—none of which Paper has, but which I need. The learning curve for Concepts is slightly higher than for Paper, but the app is so much more useful to me, with just enough UI to cue you in to what it can do, and the ability to rearrange or minimize the UI to support what you're doing at the moment..Version: 4.0.8

PLEASEEThis WAS my favourite drawing app until it was so hard tk draw ADD LAYERS WE ALL NEED LAYERS TO DRAW the shading and vlending is good but we just need layers (FOR FREE ).Version: 5.4.0

Limited access even for loyal customer :(I recently re-downloaded this app. I am sadden that I loss access and downgraded to basic tools, as they now force you to buy subscription to get access to the tools you had before. I understand they need to sustain for future updates and releases but limiting access for those who supported you earlier is not nice. It should be I have access to everything I had before and any new features added I will subscribe to gain access. Apple’s guidelines, 3.1.2(a) state: If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for..Version: 5.3.1

DANGER: UPDATE BUG YOU LOSE ALL YOUR CONTENTI have been dealing with Paper’s support team, all my journals are gone. The software AUTOMATICALLY updated on its own, when I opened this past week and all my content is wiped. My pages are there, but only a squiggly line icon is in the place of two years of art. I bought their Pen\ when it came out, bought the app of course. Their “engineers” took a look at the logs from my app? Say what? SO - Their response was oops, sorry, yeah that’s happened to a “few” users. It is shamefully irresponsible of them not to send out an email alert to all their existing customers and warn them TODAY, YOU COULD LOSE ALL YOUR WORK due to our auto update. SO BACK UP, screen shot, whatever. I am Burning my 53 stylus pen, and deleting this garbage app from this irresponsible organization. The loss has caused me undo mental and emotional distress, the personal content that was lost due to their gross negligence was very valuable to my business. SAVE YOUR MONEY, YOUR WORK, AND YOURSELF. Switching to Bamboo from WACOM, at least they are a real oraganization. Or even iOS 11 NOTES from APPLE, ANYTHING BUT A 53 product. THE WORST!!!!!.Version: 4.0.11

Subscription to get basic features that even notes haveI loved this app when it was released by 53 many years ago, and I used it on my iPad 3 and my iPhone 5s. Then you could buy pencils or markers, no subscription necessary—a great sketchbook with no strings attached. Since wetransfer got the app, they want you to pay rent for basic features. Simple, I'm DELETING the app and move on to quality products like procreate..Version: 5.4.0

Sync is absolutely unacceptable and disruptiveUnreliably unreliable and thoroughly disruptive to normal app use. I used to evangelize paper to all my friends because I loved how straightforward and delightful it was! So I write this with an extremely heavy heart. Sync is so atrocious on here because it’s constantly taking away and adding pages to my notebook in an extremely disruptive and very visual way. I don’t understand. If it’s syncing, why can’t that be done in the background? Instead, my Pages completely disappear and reappear, sometimes while I’m in the middle of writing on a page! And then I have to wait while the pages constantly rearrange themselves for no apparent reason all while I worry whether or not the page I was in the middle of saved at all! (Usually it doesn’t. The page just disappears, but occasionally decides to show up ON MY PHONE instead of the iPad where I originally sourced it) I cannot even begin to express the confusion, frustration and bitterness with this app. I’d go to share a file to a teammate only to find the notebook is MISSING ALL ITS PAGES. I can’t even STOP syncing because somehow all my notebooks are on the cloud, and they disappear if I disable this option, which is also very confusing because all these notebooks originated on that device! They should be local! And even if they aren’t, there should be an option to download them and cut off syncing! Sync has completely murdered this otherwise wonderful app for me..Version: 4.3

Not sure…Initially it worked okay but every now and then the whole app shuts off and turns pitch black. It takes abit of time to go back to normal. I am so scared to loose all the work that I have saved in this app now. Tech team please fix this issue ASAP Thank you….Version: 5.2.0

Watching you diagnostics ‘purchases how artyI now have found better options including procreate after experiencing every single one of my apps working perfectly yet this update wetransfer paper just keeps tripping out on cloud icon and NO ACCESS to all my work. If you shutdown your iPad it comes back and Remember this is the only app that trips on not showing images you have been working on. Last reply from you was send diagnostics? Yeah that will help when it’s the most basic function to show art the user is working on. But you already knows this because you CHOOSE to spy on your customers diagnostics and that is fact that you might say helps Improve blah blah but you underestimate the customers who first used paper 53. Procreate stores and links to cloud every single time.Version: 5.3.1

Subscriptions are taking over the worldIt's now pretty ugly unless you subscribe, what a pity I used to sketch here all the time. Now it's just boring... I'll be trying paper again I suppose😕.Version: 4.0.6

BookSo I don’t normally do this but I had a very high expectations for this app I thought it was gonna be a great book where I could just do whatever I wanted, but no I was doing the free version and you had to pick books and only had colour and things are too small and if you don’t have an Apple Pencil you won’t be able to do it it wasn't very entertaining and just try to make you buy more books and more books need credits and it was like so much money. Don’t buy this app.Version: 5.4.0

ReviewThis is kind of a rip off as most of the tools are only available on paper pro, which you have to pay for. Simple things like adding 2 or more images to a page and cutting pictures out are restricted for only pro members. I think this is an unfair advertisement as they don’t actually tell you that you can’t do all the stuff they say you can. It has some good assets though..Version: 4.5.4

Going downhill?I was delighted with Paper 53 when I first bought it and even purchased the pen. As it has been updated it seems to do less. I am a pensioner and it looks as though it now wants a monthly subscription for me to do things I could do before! My hobby is quilting and I would import photos of the pieced top and then doodle possible quilting designs. Unless I am missing something obvious, I think it is really bad of the developers to reduce the scope of the app so much and hold me to ransom. I’m about to try other applications. I’d rather spend my money on fabric and thread..Version: 4.1.2

Changes...The original paper had so much clarity to it. As other reviewers have said, the concept of the books, the two finger anti-clockwise reverse feature, and the idea of the App being a collection of sketchbooks on an iPad equivalent to what an artist would scribble down on one sketchbook in reality was a really good concept! I never review things in general, but this App needs the user's reviews to make it great again. I hope you guys listen to us. 😊.Version: 3.6.0

This is for YOUWant an app that no longer allows you to write with your Apple Pencil while ur in the middle of an idea…look no further.. press download. In the mean time… use Notes to make sure you don’t lose the idea while u wait for poor coding to catch up so you can use the extra, simple brushes that you’re here for…..Version: 5.4.2

Too many adsEverything here just advertises for you to get paper pro. It always lags and sometimes just crashes. I really hate how it just asks you to buy the paper pencil or paper pro EVERYWHERE. It’s annoying. Don’t get this. It’s a waste of your time. I freakin hate it.Version: 4.3.8

Used to be goodThis used to be a good app but as per every other developer at the moment they have got greedy and now force a subscription if you want to sync your journals. I paid for the pro version years ago, bought the pencil, now all my journals are stuck on the cloud and I cannot sync them to my iPad. All my work is gone. I refuse to pay a subscription to get my work back. I’m getting sick of buying apps, and eventually they become unsupported, you then have to upgrade and pay a flipping subscription to get the same features back. I used to love this software but this has ruined it for me to the point where I am not going to use this anymore and find something alternative. Please, please make it pay once keep forever, don’t be greedy!.Version: 4.2.9

Buggy since last updateI’ve been a keen user of Paper since 2012 but with the last update (iOS 17) Paper has become buggy. After drawing a stroke or three sometimes it just undoes what I’ve just done! When this happens it also loses the ability to undo / redo. It happens in small notebooks as well as big ones. I’m working with an IPad Pro 2018 with an Apple Pencil 2. Can you please look into this? The bugginess is killing my workflow!.Version: 5.4.2

Used PaperI have had Paper almost since it was first introduced. I bought the Pencil to go with it, in fact I have bought 2 of them. Now when I attempt to use it the whole purpose of the expensive pencil to use with it is gone. No more sync with the iPad, all the features I have already bought I now have to pay for again and not only that I have to subscribe and keep paying for it. My journals have gone and I have to pay to use private journals. I am not impressed with this company any more. When it was purchased by the new owner those who had already paid should have been able to keep all features. Bad move WeTransfer. I would like my almost NZ$250 back..Version: 4.6.1

Is this a mistake?Have Paper made a couple of mistakes, or are they trying to look like they are money grabbing? The App does not do the things that it advertises, UNLESS, you buy the Pro version. The tutorial is great and then the app actively undoes all its great promotional work by ramming the £8.99 subscription down your throat. Users can’t commit to such an investment without having used the features the app promised in its promotional tutorial. This is a really poor experience for a new user. Secondly, the way Paper is structured means that Family sharing is unusable if you decide to actually upgrade to Pro. So, again, this is stopping someone justifying to themselves upgrading to Pro. There is no value for money if you have to subscribe to Pro 3 or 4 times to include the rest of your family. Paper is missing out on thousands of savy users who don’t like throwing money at something that is new. These problems are easily fixed. The fact that they have not been fixed indicates to me that the company is not focused on the user. I will be deleting the app for this reason. I will look for another app. This is a competitive market with lots of options..Version: 4.6.1

Pretty decentI had this app a while back and stumbled across it today. Still very good but not going to lie would be a five star if you could access the ruler on the free version seeing as it is a basic tool. But it’s a pretty good app if you just need something to take notes or sketch on the go..Version: 4.3

❤️🎀🌈👑😍Love it but make the ‘’Pro pass’’ less expensive...Version: 5.4.0

Not helpfulCant do anything without paper pro not cool.Version: 4.6.1

Really great app but frustrating bugs with new updateLove the app and subscribe to pro. However with the latest update double tapping of the pencil doesn’t work anymore to switch tools. This is frustrating as it is something I use all the time. The new 3D graphical representations of the books look good but when constantly switching between books can be annoying now as the animations make the app feel a lot slower and less polished as the previous update was..Version: 5.0.0

Seriously Dislike this app! They took away my PRO features. I paid for it. It is not fair practice. Shame!.Version: 5.4.0

This used to be a nice app for the £6.49 pro option! But now it’s a rip off!I originally bought this app, because of what it offered and for £6.49 was s nice price for unlocking the brushes in the pro mode. But after the app updated to this new model of pay per month charging, I am both not a fan of the new model and find it a complete rip off, when considering I have have already paid for features that have been now removed behind a pay wall, all it seems to gain a regular revenue stream, for the same features that originally cost £6.49! Originally I rated this a 5 star app, but now it’s just plain trashy with such a deliberate plot to exploit their customers! I don’t recommend buying this unless you use the free features only! As there are equally better apps like Concepts and Pixelmator, with similar features and for a price close to two months of using this app’s pro features!.Version: 4.5.3

Monthly subscription to use scissorsThis was one of the greatest sketching apps ever made. Thank goodness everyone is adopting the pay monthly approach. Another fantastic program destroyed by greed..Version: 5.3.1

Reduced functionality. Avoid if you canNo ability to import photos. Spotlight function gone. My lovely journal covers have been removed to the premium version. I’m sure some of the tools have been removed. I understand the attractiveness of the subscription model for the developers, 53, but why take away so much that was good about the old app, and which we have paid for? Why punish your loyal customer base? Why not just add nice new features to encourage people to move to premium? Having read the reviews I decided not to upgrade. Somehow, when selecting individual apps to upgrade, Paper got selected and before I knew it I had lost all the neat features I had paid for. I’m so disappointed..Version: 5.4.2

DisappointedI have used this app for roughly 3 - 4 years now. It used to be such an amazing app, where artists could create amazing pieces and share them on a platform where they could receive feedback from other artists. Back then I would have considered it a five star app. I purchased the pencil, and that made my experience so much better, allowing me to blur and change pressure was fabulous. But now what do I feel? I feel cheated and robbed. The experience I once had with this app has been stripped away. There is no longer the option of sharing my art with my fellow artists, whom I had developed friendships with. Now I have to pay to use features that I could once use for free. I find that ridiculous. A suggestion I would make, is that rather than making in app purchases for your so-called “PAPER PRO” make the app a paid app. I would also suggest bringing back the sharing forum, as it was something that really set this app apart from others that are similar. I used to recommend this app to everyone I knew that wanted a digital way to create art. Now I suggest other apps that I’ve used, as I feel that they are now better quality than PAPER, which was once my favourite app..Version: 4.0.11

Left me strandedI was an early adopter and bought their premium ‘lifetime’ app only to have it hobbled when they changed strategies and went to subscription. Also left me stranded with two $100 pencils that no longer work with the app without a monthly fee. The app was always just OK and never worth what I spent. And now… I’ve lost access to my cloud files and can’t use it for much. I would never recommend dealing with this company. Sorry guys. Emails and phone calls and… you’ve left me stranded. :(.Version: 5.3.1

What happened!I paid a one time fee years ago to unlock all features. I had some great drawings and shared on the platform. It’s all gone, my pictures, the features I paid for, everything! I loved this app, even bought your pencil. My iPad died a while ago and have only recently been able to replace it so am so frustrated and totally bummed at starting from scratch. I’m not paying a subscription fee for something I once owned 🤯.Version: 4.5.6

Delivery leaves much (much) to be desired.Paper app is aesthetically pleasing and good for quick sketches and notes. Seems to be it though. I don’t mind paying reasonable prices for good features but FiftyThree wants a subscription to a moderate quality app, a bad move for business in my opinion. It will only push consumers to other apps with one time fees. Especially when Paper has noticeable bugs. The Pencil is a decent stylus when tandem with Paper but once again FiftyThree would make more money by putting an effort into making it compatible with the Procreate app. Makes for a decent passive stylus anyway. Paper app has its merits but I would never dream of spending a dime on a subscription to a drawing/note taking app. It’s almost laughable. This day and age there are just too many subscription based products to warrant another. Don’t knock their stylus, use Paper for free, purchase another app for art. **Take note FiftyThree**.Version: 4.0.11

To much moneyI like this app but you have to pay for too much and there’s no point.Version: 5.3.1

Great app but could use some improvementsTruly love the purpose of this app, however I think it would really benefit from a few improvements. It would be great if you were able to layer your media’s, for example be able to choose to have marker/pen/paint/highlighter etc. behind or in front of photos or other paint/marker/pen etc… also creating smart shapes with lines and being able to fill the insides of them that way would be useful as you can only fill shapes (squares, circles etc.).Version: 5.2.0

Was originally happy, but now not so muchI’ve had this app for quite a while now and I was extremely upset to find out that even though I have already paid for the “pro” items, i was now being told I’d have to pay again. After reading through some of the comments and advice given from the creators, I decided to see if I was actually signed in on the app and ,Lo and behold, I was. This greatly disappointed me as I was very eager to continue using them. I hope there is a wAy I could get them back that does not include paying for them as I have already done so and am no prepared to do so again.Version: 4.2.9

Very buggyI bought the premium subscription and I’m so disappointed because it keeps bugging like crazy, especially when using the collage mode. I am using the iPad 10th gen and the apple pen. It keeps turning the cutting mode on and off, and when I go on to actually cut the photo, the mode just switched in the middle of me cutting through the photo. I turned off finger gestures and yet every time my hand touches the screen when I’m using the pen (as it normally happens when you’re writing) and the whole app just goes crazy. Another thing is also the undo and redo option, it just doesn’t work. It seems as if the app has a short term memory and if you don’t do the undo in the 5 seconds for example, it just won’t work at all. And what started happening today is the app just randomly deleting pieces of written text and I’m not even able to use the undo option. The little arrows don’t work, and the screen tap option doesn’t work either. I really want this to work because it is such a cool idea, but I am getting more frustrated than I actually enjoy it at this point..Version: 5.4.2

Useful App, Ridiculous Premium featuresI have been using this app for a few years now and got the Pencil by 53 before I had gotten my iPad Pro + pencil. Originally, the notebooks were listed along the left side (as in Notability) which made them easy to view and select. They now scroll across the screen and only the front-and-center notebook is visible, which makes finding and selecting a notebook difficult. A bigger problem is the subscription. Features that I would consider fairly simple (changing the size of pens, cutting and pasting across notes) are subscription (premium) only features. Several other apps - Notability, GoodNotes, MyScript - are all $10 or less for a one-time purchase and offer similar features. If drawing is your thing, Procreate, Concepts, Sketches, SketchBook, or one of the Adobe apps are all <$20 (or free) and, again, often offer improved features. I mention this for 2 reasons - for one, if I were going to spend money on an app, I would put my money into one of the above apps. With that said, Paper is an elegant app that would be worth $5-10 +/- because it is well designed and seems useful as a place to sketch and organize ideas. Despite its limitations (and my frustrations at what I consider a ridiculous Premium service), I still use it quite frequently..Version: 4.2.1

Already paid, now asked to subscribe, crashes ipadI was an early adopter of Paper. I paid the $ to unlock everything way back when. I really feel like the practice of changing the monetizing method should be illegal or at very least not allowed by Apple... app developers should create a new app so those of us who already paid can still access the software we purchased. I know it’s a tricky issue and I do want to support developers. Problem is that when I buy something, I feel like it should be mine forever unless there’s a clearly stated time limit. Otherwise I can spend $ today and lose access tomorrow... that’s definitely not right. This trend of moving everything to subscription is turning me off to spending $ on apps in general. Seems extremely unwise to pay for something without any guarantee that it will remain accessible as purchased. In addition to the previously stated issues, this app is now causing my iPad Pro to crash completely - as in turn completely off despite being plugged in and charged. It is an old model, but similar apps do not cause this much crashing. Not all of us can afford to buy new devices every few years, but it seems clearer than ever that developers just don’t care about making stable apps with fair pricing..Version: 5.3.1

I paid for this and now it’s subscription! It’s a great app - really good functionality and nice to use. Irritatingly, I bought this app when it was a paid for app when they first released it. I therefore supported the developers as they were staring out, enabling them to release their product. They’ve now made the app a yearly subscription and functionality I paid for (about £8.99, from memory) is now gone. Is that the thanks I get for helping a fledgling app developer? I won’t be signing up to the yearly subscription as who knows, they may change the model again....Version: 4.3

Wt$I purchased this app years ago and had no problem reinstalling this app and restoring my purchased pro features. Now after the last update I can’t restore my Pro features. They want me to purchase a $@&”%#* subscription! Delete! Delete! Delete!.Version: 4.2.5

Skeuomorphism taken too far - lost functionality in latest updateI like the tool palette, and the experience of actually sketching is very nice, but the change to how journals are navigated between is frustratingly bad. Before, there was a list on the left and I could just jump to the journal (notebook? I forget what they’re called) that I wanted. Now that list is no longer an option. Instead I have to swipe through these big, unlabeled pictures of books to find the one I want. Not only is this laborious and a completely unnecessary step backward in efficiency, but the titles of the journals are not even on the pictures of the books themselves; you have to wait until each one is front and center and then the name pops up on the top. This makes a bad situation even worse - because the right journal is even harder to locate. If you were going fully skeuomorphic you’d think you could at least put the title of the journal on the cover of the picture of the journal? Ug. Sorry for ranting. I want to love this app, but this was just a totally boneheaded move. Please bring back the list mode, and if you must develop the UI in a skeuomorphic direction, please try to do so without making it harder to use efficiently..Version: 4.0.8

Can’t buy proCan’t buy pro, whenever I click to buy it it just shows five pictures of what I can do if I get pro.. 🤷🏽‍♀️.Version: 5.3.1

DO NOT USE THE NEW UPDATEI have loved and drawn on paper for quite a while now. As a devoted artist, I appreciated this app for all it brought me. I enjoyed all of the brushed and features that it gave me, as ALL of the brushed were free to use. After I have downloaded the present update, the straight edge pen, the paint roller, and the cut and paste scissors were taken away along with it, as paper is now asking me money in order to use them. I understand making a “paper pro” version that the user has to pay for, but simply taking away recourses that were there to use before is just uncool. Normally I would trust an app to actually improve my experience with an update, but now I have lost all of my faith in paper. In addition, the new update is very sloppy and hard to maneuver around. It is much more difficult to draw on and send things, as when you try to send your drawing to others in one of the new sketchbooks, it is always tilted the wrong way. DO NOT USE THE NEW UPDATE. It is NOT worth it..Version: 4.2.2

Bait and SwitchI got the app when I had the iPad 2. Great app, useful, simple, and fun to use. Then they overhauled the app, made it much less useful, frustrating to use, and generally a pain. Uninstalled it and never looked back using other apps instead. Just reinstalled it to see if it would upgrade the firmware of pencil. Looks like they are actually sorta listening to people and went back to what it used to be as people wanted. And now I can use it without being forced to create an account like they used to do. Still not what it was. I regret purchasing and supporting them through the tools and pencil. This was disappointing and, although a little more familiar to what it used to be, all the extra dross with their “pro” moniker is just a turn off. I’ll probably keep it installed to see what happens but with the bugs I’ve been reading about in the comments, I won’t be making it my go-to app. Seems like a little too late. They went their own way forgetting the base that made them and now they’re trying to get them back….Version: 4.1.2

Slick with some serious flawsI keep coming back to Paper for things that are just pure sketching which is nice but I can’t get rid of a bunch of other sketching apps to make up for the shortcomings of Paper: - Freeform for auto shapes. Sometimes you just need to use perfectly formatted boxes and circles for flow chart type stuff, especially for professional use. Paper’s shape recognition is EMBARRASSINGLY BAD. Like there are unknown note apps coded by one guy with shape recognition that blows Paper out of the water. - Noteful for Layers Even if you aren’t doing photo editing, having layers that you can move up and down, hide, merge and delete are an absolute killer feature to have for flowstate for ideation of any kind. And it could easily live in the skeuomorphic design language of Paper. - Apple notes for the ruler The “ruler” feature is as bad as the shape recognition, apple notes little ruler just feels so right and natural to use, and again, it fits the skeuomorphic design language. Make these changes so I can delete my other apps..Version: 5.4.1

Not as goodWhy has your upgrade changed the original app so much. It seems to me the upgrade has been done only for those who have purchased the Pencil stylus in mind, and those who are using it as a tool for work, study, design not for ordinary folks that just like to play around a little. Where are the easy to use tools? Please bring back the original tools but leave the new features so that everyone can enjoy this wonderful app..Version: 3.4.2

Way to hardI can’t even control it. I’m doing what is says but it doesn’t work! Bad app.Version: 5.3.1

Review dughhh xDI'm going to be honest here, that's great that you guys have wonderful ideas, but it changes the whole thing, the book idea was great with all the wonderful equipment to use, but replacing the books with scattered paper was a let to be honest. And removing the rewind tap thingy (yea I know great explanation I have) was a huge let down. And being able put pictures and writing was something I was hoping for the first time but when I got it I don't know... Ruins the whole drawing and sketching stuff, I'm not sure if you can reverse an update or what ever but please do something about it. Thanks, Anonymous Pesron..Version: 3.0.0

DisappointedVery disappointed that some of the free features were taken away in the newer version. Was a big fan of paper when live stream is available..Version: 4.0.8

Definitely zeroI liked it years ago and paid the original one-off purchase for access to all features. Then you started messing with the layout and making unnecessary complications to the way it worked. Further updates didn’t improve things. I wanted to use the app, not make some account! Now you’ve slyly re-jigged the whole thing by making a subscription out of what was once a one-off purchase, virtually stealing from all those who previously paid in good faith. That’s really low! And no, I don’t want to “sign in to my account “ BECAUSE I NEVER MADE ONE...DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!.Version: 4.2.9

Subscription isn’t greatApp is mostly good, I decided to upgrade to the subscription which is great to sync between devices, however now every time I go to open a journal, it needs to download the pages to sync. Why can’t it do this in the background before I want to use the app. Its incredibly frustrating every time I want to use it I have to wait a minute or two for everything to load. Free version is better in this respect..Version: 5.4.0

Better than some other apps, but….It could be much better. The app simulates a book, with pages, but when you open a page, it is really two pages, the left and right leafs … that is fine if you plan on ignoring the book idea and want to draw and the entire screen, but if you want to take notes, you have no idea where the center of the page is (the virtual binding) so you can’t really treat it like a book, at least not easily. The app gives a good selection of tools and colors, as long as you pay for the premium service. The developer changed the pay model. In the past the basic app was free, and you paid, once, for more tools. Now, they want you to pay forever and ever. Also, the tool bar is _huge_ which means you lose a good chunk of paper space at the bottom. You can get around this by zooming in, but then your scale is off. All in all, it is nice to be able to write on something that acts like paper, but it is a little awkward getting around and having an idea of scale and position. The app is available on iPad and iPhone, but it doesn’t work the same between the two devices. In the end, it’s a good idea, but not very useful for anything. The app Card flow seems to be much more practical..Version: 5.4.0

:(I miss when this was 53 I used to see amazing drawings on here when you couldn’t add images and when it was a community of drawers..Version: 4.7.3

Ruined by subscriptionI loved Paper when it was Paper by 53. I even bought the 53 Pencil, years before Apple caught up. I was really happy when the technical drawing aids came in. Unfortunately money has ruined this experience for me. An example of an app being stripped of features unless you take out a subscription, which in my case, with a low income, is not practical. Shame. Even a one time purchase of pro features is better than a subscription in my opinion. I feel let down by 53. I think they sold out. I still want to thank them however, because the original Paper helped me through a super tough time in my life..Version: 4.5.0

Not the sameIt is not the same app I brought before.. may it has the same core, but the slightest different make using this app uncomfortable. Not mentioning I need to buy it again.. so disappointed.Version: 5.3.1

Pencil doesn’t work anymoreI can’t tell you how disappointed I am that the Pencil by 53 is not supported anymore. I used to love the app, brag about it and about what I could achieve with it. Sad that I now have to subscribe to a monthly plan for an app that I have purchased and that the Pencil I purchased as well is now a vulgar common stylus I could purchase at the dollar store. I don’t know what you guys are going to do next, I hope that some form of reparation is to be sent to those who have invested in this. Otherwise, this would be such a waste in so many ways..Version: 4.3.4

Used to be great - now is buggy and unusablePicked it up again after not being able to use it for a couple of weeks. It has now decided to turn into the most frustrating experience. Will start drawing and then undo the last move. Over and over again..Version: 5.4.2

Good but could improveWhat the creators have done with it so far are great. However I would suggest they allow you to import a whole page text tool and allow you to import more than one image per page. Also the graph tool is hard to use since you still have to draw it by hand. Overall the app is nice to use if you just want something simple or use it as I do to make simple portfolios.Version: 4.2.9

I don’t understand PaperAs above..Version: 5.4.0

Warning!! This is not free!Let me start by saying that this App is nice drawing app, however it falls short in a few areas. The first is that it's not quite a full art app and lacks some basic features like importing photos, etc. and it's neither a proper note taking app because it lacks useful features on that front as well, mainly related to export options, etc. The biggest problem I have with this App is that the developer is taking the Mickey when it comes to in app purchases. I have paid for every pen thus far, which I thought was priced very highly comared to other Apps, and now they release an update where you finally have a few more colours and you have to pay for the colour mixer. It's a little greedy in my opinion, when the developer wants to charge for every little feature when the feature should have been part of the app in the first place. So we are left with an App which falls short in some areas, but has amazing potential, and a greedy developer with a rediculous pricing model. If they charged a fair price up front and didn't charge you for every single improvement, then I would give it 4 or 5 stars. It's only worth 1 star at the moment though. Sick of freemiuim and this is freemium to the bone..Version: 1.2.1

👎🏾 DOES NOT WORKI just upgraded to the latest version and the original stylus by 53 suddenly stopped working and very worryingly any reference disappeared from the app 🥺 I was in the middle of drawing a diagram and now I’m forced to give up, for ever, because there’s no Apple stylus that is supported by my iPad mini. If you took the “difficult decision” (don’t make me laugh) to kill the support for the pencil and letting your loyal customers down because you’re technically incompetent to keep the 53 Stylus SDK in working condition then you don’t deserve any market share. Who cares if you bought the original company that developed this product once beautiful, they certainly cared about their customers more than you! 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾 I strongly suggest everybody to AVOID WeTransfer company and products AT ANY COST. DELETE THIS APP!.Version: 4.7.3

Used to be my favourite app!I used to love this app. I can’t tell if other note taking apps have got better or this has got worse over the years? I recently came back to iPad and this was the top of my list for apps. But it seems quite laggy on the iPad Air (2020) and it just doesn’t write as well as notability. There is a clear difference between the two. Secondly I’m not a fan of subscriptions, but I did subscribe because I figured for less than the cost of 1 moleskin pad it’s got to be worth it. (plus I found it difficult to try everything out in the current basic feature set where items are locked depending on the example you are on) I’m pretty disappointed though to be honest. As mentioned above it doesn’t write well due to the lag and it doesn’t draw well either when compared to pro create for example. The presentation of the app is stunning as it always has been, but that’s it for me. A real shame If you could fix this issue it would be a winner, but as it currently is, it’s a waste of money in my opinion.Version: 4.7.1

Sketchbook but pencil 😭😭My last review was after the sketchbooks had been taken off & that’s when I stopped using the app religiously, which had not been long after I had got my beautiful pencil!! I dropped in from time to time but nothing much had changed. Recently found my pencil again thought let’s have a look & the sketchbooks are back thank goodness ...... but wait pencil support has gone?? Why?? Ooh I can use it as a passive stylise.... great, if I wanted a —— passive stylise I would have a got a pound one from the —— pound shop!!! really disappointed please rethink brining pencil back in to the family, I get it’s hard work to maintain software with ever changing hardware & OS to contend with, but isn’t that why we pay for the tech, the app & now the subscription!! I know I’m righting this totally in vain as no one will probably read this, & the development team is extremely unlikely to rethink but I just wanted to rant & voice my disappointment of what was once a great tool!!.Version: 4.3.6

Buggy appDifficult to use and directions are not very clear. I could not delete a page and found the instructions difficult to navigate. There are better apps out there for free..Version: 5.4.1

Violates Apple App Store Rules3.1.2(a) Permissible Uses: "If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for." I already paid for multiple brush sizes, yet the publisher took away from me that key function when they switched to a subscription-based business model. It's ridiculous that Apple refuses to enforce their own Store rules. And it’s disgusting that Apple goes out of their way to promote publishers who blatantly break Apple’s own rules. NOTE: not one of the Diagram tool, or the Fill tool, or the Cut tool implement the five brush sizes (ink pen, pencil, thick marker, thin marker) I already paid for when I bought the “Essentials toolbox”. That’s why it is false to claim that nobody paid for multiple brush sizes before the publisher switched to a subscription business model and why so-called “Legacy Status” still VIOLATES THE STORE RULES..Version: 5.2.0

Why am I being asked to pay service fees for a product? The app is beautiful, and is nice for journaling or ideas work. But it is held back by a few frustrations. For instance, not being able to delete a text note once it has been added to a page. Only being able to import a single image per page. And then, for a few of the extra functions, I’m asked to pay a subscription? Why am I being asked to pay service fees for small additional components of a single software product? It’s not big enough or important enough in its scope or function to be able to justify this, like an adobe suite or financial tool. This is also annoying because I had previous versions of paper and I’m pretty certain I already paid to upgrade it - so my product has been downgraded and now they want to tax me to get them back. Nope..Version: 4.1.2

DisappointedWhen I first got an iPad, Paper was the first app I downloaded. I wasn’t the best at it, but I had a lot of fun just playing with it. Mix was great too — just seeing new art was kinda fun! Think kit was a great addition, but then a lot of weird new features got added. I spent some time away from iPads in general until now, when I re-downloaded Paper, grabbed my Pencil (by 53), and tried to use it again. It’s like everything is crazy now. I mean really. I have access to the think kit tools automatically, but some things have badges for pro, and apparently I can still subscribe. I tried drawing lines with arrows. It’s a basic feature that’s listed on the website, but upon further inspection, that’s only for Paper pro and legacy users. But wait, another support article says that diagram arrow tools aren’t supported yet. After upgrading to pro, every time I cut, I get a “copied” notification. Can’t figure out paste though. No help articles for that. Everything here says rushed. Missing tool items. Poor help menus to explain what’s changed. Poor support pages that erroneously list features that don’t exist anymore. Poor distinction between what’s outdated, what promotional material no longer applies, and what this app even does anymore..Version: 4.0.8
