Scape for Positive User Reviews

Really enjoyable both to configure, use and listen toI've never bought an app like this (not that there probably are that many!) but I read a couple of interviews online with Eno and was intrigued. Basically you are given musical 'building blocks' to assemble to create soundscapes. Each building block does (may?) contain its own set of rules about how it sounds which can vary depending on time, what else is on the screen and so on. This means that from one launch to the next, the soundscape may be identical to last time or subtly different - what Eno calls 'generative music'. Genius! As you use the app more, more building blocks become available to use in your assemblages - some are 'moods', some are background sounds which can be overlaid with each other and then objects of different types may be freely combined as you wish. The combinations are probably infinite. You can play the existing scapes supplied by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers or save your own creations and then assemble them into playlists. Not only are the created sounds ambient, chilled, fluid and often hypnotic but the entire app itself is animated in a slow, sliding gliding sort of way that complements it perfectly. The music also plays itself in a subtle visual way as a bonus on top of what you hear. Wonderful stuff indeed. I love it..Version: 1.0.1

Audiobus it!Audiobus please..Version: 1.1

Excellent can play it for days!Make random choices and let it evolve. Big Eno fan and this is like buying a thousand new Eno ambient releases!.Version: 1.0.1

Soundscape timesI purchased this based on my good times with Bloom. Great follow-up? Spent hours just building and tweaking. It relaxes me. I'd ask for a few more sounds along the minimalistic lines but that's it. Perhaps some ambient space themes. But what do I know. The interface is simplistic which forces me not to complicate but rather immerse and enjoy?.Version: 1.1

Scape is a wonderful step forwardScape represents one of the next steps forward in music production, where the album generates itself and you control some of the variables. Users will be able to create immersive soundscapes that vary wildly and learn the playful self generating rules that the musical elements have..Version: 1.0.1

ThrilledI was so thrilled to learn that the guys had created a great new interactive ambient music/art app when I bought my iPad. I have loved relaxing to Bloom for a couple years now, and though quite different, Scape is every bit as relaxing to use. I have just begun to scratch the surface of enjoyment this app offers, and I look forward to years of chillin' with it..Version: 1.0.1

Eno is and remains the God of MusicIf you like ambient music, you need this..Version: 1.0.1

BeautifulI love the Bloom app and, to be honest, thought this one would be a poor sequel as it were. I could not have been more wrong. Scape takes the Bloom concept much further. The sounds and atmospheres can be crafted into a seemingly endless ambient soundscape. Now you can have a Brian Eno album playing while you work that only shifts and tilts when your mood desires it. It also ends when you decide to move on, which can be 5 minutes or 7 hours later. I use it on my long commute on headphones but also set a pattern up and have it running through my amp at home. Sometimes I change the Scape, other times I let it evolve naturally. If you love Brian Eno and enjoy creating and listening to music you will probably get as much out of this as I have..Version: 1.0.1

A sheer delightScape is the result of a collaboration between Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, and it progresses Eno's idea of "generative music", i.e. making music from the interactions between various programmatic elements. The app allows you to choose background moods to give an overall feel to a song, onto which you drop "instruments" which create the rhythmic and melodic tones. The resulting ambient soundscapes are truly remarkable - you can create terrific pieces within minutes of installing this app, and the more you use it the more elements are made available, so the app grows as you explore it. Scape is a wonderful creative experience, and is the most used app on my iPad. Don't miss it..Version: 1.1

Outstanding! With plenty to play with, this ambient music app has lots of flexibility. New elements are introduced as one gets used to working with the program, keeping overwhelm at a minimum, fascination at a maximum. In some ways, the best to come out of the Eno-Chilvers partnership to date. We'll done!.Version: 1.1

Absolutely sublimeAn endlessly evolving piece from Eno and Chilvers, very much in the style of one of Eno's installation pieces. Easily the best thing I've spent £3.99 on!.Version: 1.0.1

Still as good as ever.If you like ambient music then this remains the app of choice. While not easily understood it is nonetheless easy to use and creating an album of soothing sounds is as simple as placing images on a background you have chosen from a palette to suit your mood. Allowing infinite tweaking, this app enables you to match and then modify your frame of mind. Enjoy!.Version: 1.1

Masterpiece!Once again the Maestros have delivered.......This time a true MASTERPIECE! May they both be blessed!.Version: 1.0.1

Exquisite app.Saw an interview today with Brian Eno talking about his new 'album' and app Scape. Being a big fan of the Budd/Eno collaborations, I promptly downloaded it. And I am so glad I did. Apart from listening to Eno's tasteful ambient 'scapes, I have been creating my own with eye-wateringly beautiful results. I now have this app running constantly in my house on big speakers, creating a tranquil relaxing atmosphere. Occasionally, as I'm walking past my IPad, I'll 'tweak' the settings to vary the Scape sound. Make no mistake, this isn't just some random sound generator. This is genuine aural interaction. Fantastic, and did I say, Exquisite?.Version: 1.0.1

Nice offering, entertaining relaxing and pretty deepIt is indeed Generative, Downtempo, ambient and quite a trip. It's sort of a celebrity guided tour of Mixtikl with good results guaranteed and a lot of the twiddling of randomness behind-the-scenes… There isn't much to criticize except for the fact that the gain is too high on a couple of the Rhodes and synth type sounds and the jarring can, not always hurt the subtlety of some of the other sounds and the spaces between them... A normalize for them wouldn't be asking too much. Maybe a couple of little living creatures to wander around the scapes and fuse or fight or both. It is worth the price, if the developers continue to provide content or flexibility in importation options like other offerings similarly branded. The ability to use your own sounds is the key to immortality for sound software....Version: 1.0.1

MarvelousMarvelous. If you like ambient music this will keep you entertained. Intuitive interface. The app also supports Airplay so that live music can be sent to networked speakers..Version: 1.0.1

Great job! The only thing I wish it had.......is an iPhone version. This app is a great way for audience and musicians to interact. If an iPhone version ever became available, that would make the interaction truly portable..Version: 1.0.1

Seamless soundscape that keeps on givingI was slightly underwhelmed when I first ran this as I thought it sounded a bit limited. How wrong I was ! The more time you spend with this, the more rich sounds and textures seem to appear as a reward for playing it. There are some lovely deep sub bass tones contrasting with some high end sculpted harsher sounds. It is ideal for a seamless soundtrack when you have friends round for a meal. If you want to create a wall of drone for whatever reason this is for you. The only negative for me are some of the graphics which are a bit dated. Also, it would perhaps be nice to have samples of vocal tones. Nevertheless it is essential for ambient, minimal, drone, soundscape enthusiasts. For the price it is an absolute gift that keeps on giving..Version: 1.0.1

Ambient JourneyScape is an immersive audio experience that invites you to create and explore sonic soundscapes. I have owned and enjoyed Bloom and Trope for almost two years, but Scape really pulled me in. After downloading it I thought that I would just test it and then play with it in the morning. Well, four hours later I'm at risk of seeing the sunrise instead of my pillow. I'm looking forward to taking some beats I've created and combining the results. This is a real treat! Enjoy!.Version: 1.0.1

Great app on all levelsThis is a gorgeously crafted app that looks as good as it sounds. As an ambient album it's top notch music from the master (and creator) of the genre. You can tap Play and kick back and listen. As an interactive music app it's delightful. One part discovery, one part experimentation, and one part musical instrument. Plus it's just beautiful to look at. It's clear that a lot of attention, time and effort went into making the user interface..Version: 1.0.1

Love itI listen to ambient music a lot. This app allows me to never get bored. It doesn't seem like loops - very nuanced and textural. One piece, which lasts about 5 minutes, changes from beginning to end Would like the ability loop a piece, or better still, have it play to a specified length..Version: 1.0.1

AmazingWhat a great app, but it leaves me wondering whether I need to buy Lux or any future Eno ambient CD, given that I can pretty much create them myself. Without a doubt this is the best of Bloom, Air and Trope, creating much fuller soundscapes in a very short amount of time. How about a competition in which all owners submit a track anonymously (including Brian himself !) and we all vote on which is the best ?.Version: 1.0.1

I'd love a sleep timer or time limitI love Scape! It is my favorite of the 4 apps. Only thing I'd change: The other generative music apps have a sleep timer- it would be great if Scape had one too. As a musician, I love to improvise with Scape live ( or along with someone 'playing' Scape), and a timer would allow for a finite amount if time for a particular improvisation. Also, as someone who can't listen to music all night, it is awesome to have on for an hour or so before bed, but it would be awesome if it would shut itself off..Version: 1.0.1

Eno's "Music for Living"Scape is an ambient music lovers wet iDream. It is the perfect Eno record… endless possibilities…ever changing. You can save Scapes, create playlists. I create nightly playlists to sleep to. I haven't found a way to repeat or play a list through out the entire night…. but maybe I just haven't found that out yet… if it is not an option it should be. Amazing app for any fan of Eno or ambient music in general. Hands down the best Eno app to date..great job…well done!.Version: 1.0.1

The bestI love this already...Bloom was awesome. This is transcendent. How can you NOT get it??? Many thanks to Opal for doing this !!!! All the best ~~~ dave at pureambient.com.Version: 1.0.1

RemarkableA brilliant app. A must for anyone interested in ambient sounds, whether you choose to interact or simply listen to the scapes included..Version: 1.1

So incredibly cool and smartWow, this is really cool. My hat goes off to Eno for this, really awesome!.Version: 1.0.1

Best Creative App for iPadThis has got to be the best creative app I've found for the iPad. So easy to use, grows as you use, and creates the most beautiful soundscapes. Thanks for providing it..Version: 1.0.1

Incredible generative music appBloom, Air, Trope: I thought they all were terrific. This, however, changes the landscape entirely. It's dark ambient: think Shutov Assembly or On Land, only this time you set the parameters for the music. Among the very greatest music apps out there, and a worthy entry into Eno and Chilver's discographies..Version: 1.0.1

ScapeIs this the future of music ? Astounding app and cheap as chips..Version: 1.0.1

Love itSimple, pure, austere, reflective. I love interacting with this app. The generative process is awesome for creative play. 5 stars when I can name my own compositions..Version: 1.0

SublimeThis sublime app is AirPlay compatible and runs in the background. So I am sitting on my sofa listening via Apple TV through my TV system with simulated Dolby Prologic Surround as I type this on my iPad as the ethereal sounds wash around the room. Chilling time..Version: 1.0.1

Ambient evolutionAn interactive Eno & Chilvers album with endless possibilities, an ambient music lovers dream. I'll be checking out more of Chilvers' works. A beautiful and clean interface. Kudos and thanks for evolving the genre..Version: 1.0.1

Music for Airports comes to the iPadIncredibly useful and fun way to explore the genre. It continues to play in the background, so it makes for a great ambient jam machine. Been a fan of Eno since way back when and this app doubles as a great stress reliever and creative tool. Highly recommended..Version: 1.0.1

GeniusI was around 12 when I bought my first Eno albums. Never dreamt that I would be able to create anything like this back then. How times have changed but how unsurprising that Eno is there at the forefront of musical change, how we access and create it. We all know it but I'll say it again. The man is a genius. However, if Brian drops me an email and explains how I can email tracks I would be most grateful..Version: 1.0.1

The best one yetEno and Chilvers have outdone themselves. This is not only engaging and creative, it provides meaningful soundscaping to your environment. Well done..Version: 1.0.1

Ambiently AmazingGranted, you are going to need to love ambient music for this app to be enjoyable to you. But, if you are, spend your $5 right now. This thing is terrific, and terrific in a way that Eno's previous app projects, Bloom & Trope (and whatever the other one is), just aren't. It amazingly easy to create really lovely "generative music" pieces with this app. I love it. There is a lot of room for development. I'm not sure a full version for iPhone is practical, but an iPhone player of the scapes one creates would be amazing. Also, I'd like to see cloud storage of user files..Version: 1.0.1

Beautiful and AmazingThis one of the most rewarding and incredible musical experiences I personally have ever had. I have many many music apps and have found this to be the most intuitive and easy to use so far. You don't need to know about musical theory to make beautiful scapes with this. Had this only one day and have created more than forty of my own scapes, and it keeps evolving on it's own, adding more elements and backgrounds. Iv'e also discovered that I can run Scape in the background and run other apps with it. This may not be for everyone, but anyone seeking tranquility and beauty and yeah sometimes very dark and sinister ambient music this would be very very hard to beat...Mr Chivers and Mr Eno have done a remarkable job here and one can only hope that more is added in the future to this truly sublime app...Version: 1.0.1

WonderfulMeditative sublime fun with headphones.Version: 1.0.1

Another amazing app from EnoWonderful app. Very simple and intuitive to use. The resulting soundscapes are fascinating. I like how the app introduces new elements over time so that you are not overwhelmed by choice at the beginning. We are very lucky Brian Eno has taken such an interest in developing these little applications and sharing them with us. Highly recommended..Version: 1.0.1

Ambient, generative, musical, creative, meditativeAnyone who likes Eno's ambient music (or his collaborators like Budd or Hassell) should get this app. As other reviewers have pointed out, the inbuilt "presets" mean you basically get an Eno album for free. The app works by allowing you to add visual objects and backgrounds to the screen which correspond to audio elements (drones, synth pads, drums, brief note sequences). The elements interact and change over time. You can then string these together as a "playlist" to create the equivalent of an ambient album where individual ambient tracks fade n and out of each other. I use this app all the time. As in every day. In a noisy workplace like mine, it's brilliant to push out unwanted background noise and replace it with an ambient that I find very beneficial for concentration and studying. If, like so many of us, you're stuck in an environment where you can't control the background hubbub (which for me os a constant low level irritation) then this is worth a try. I plan to use it next time I'm on a long plane trip..Version: 1.1

An absolute GEM!!!!This app is so well thought out! The beauty is how simple yet deep this thing is. I think it's one of my favorite apps! As you work with it, more sounds for scapeing continue to appear keeping me even more in the creative mode. A beautifully unique interface and beautifully programmed. I just passed #300 scape and am still going. What more can I say?.Version: 1.0.1

Spectacular — with One CaveatI have had Scape for close to seven years now, and am still generating my own pieces (140 and counting). Don't be fooled by the price point and abstract nature; if you're looking for vastly expansive soundscape and ambience generation at your fingertips, with the opportunity to save and manage your ideas, this is your ideal creation space. There's really nothing else like it on the App Store. However…Scape has one potentially major caveat, and it isn't the lack of a proper export function. There have been no updates in any form in over half a decade, and sooner or later it will no longer be supported by future iOS versions. Moreover, I believe that as Scape is both Opal Limited's most ambitious app and is over a decade old, it should be updated to reflect its potential in some way. I mean, Trope just received a symmetry update five months ago, and its existence predates this app. I don't know who checks these reviews (if anyone), but in sum: Opal Limited has here a unique and innovative work of beauty. Please don't let it gather dust and fade quietly away..Version: 1.2

It's Alive!Popular music is about feeling anticipation and then finally getting what is expected. Ambient music (at least with the droning and floating varieties) releases that idea. Nature sounds can be pleasing because, although their are certain signatures to each sound, it's never the same way twice so your mind gives up "expecting". With Scape you choose the elements and the background and then let it live! It's not about giving you a million options (although Scape has plenty), It's about choosing things and then sitting back and seeing (hearing) what they do. This app also adds new elements as you continue to play with it; I can't believe new elements are popping up even a year after I bought it! Think of this as a living, breathing ambient album (animal)!.Version: 1.1

Generative Music...Brian Eno has been on the road to "scape" since his first tape recorder. Cybernetics, throwing tennis balls at broken pianos with Tom Phillips, participating in Cornelius Cardew's "The Great Learning", his efforts using Koan, Frippertronics, multiple CD players, Bloom, Trope, Air, Oblique Strategies, Stafford Beer, etc., seem to have led him here. Here are the loosely composed elements required to create endless "places" he wants to take you to. All roads lead to "scape"....Version: 1.0.1

Chillout like never beforeThe ambient king's return to iOS with this album / scape generator. This is an album but also an assembler tool so you can make your own scapes, save them and email them to friends also on scapes to use and listen to. So get your bluetooth speaker on and create a wonderful scape. You don't need to be proficient in any instrument to use or make scapes. Enjoy!.Version: 1.0.1

OutstandingFirst, you must be looking into this because you are into ambient music. You will not be disappointed. I feel Scape has a rare combination of simplicity and depth. The user interface is easy to understand, but that does not also mean one will become bored with this quickly. I bought an iPhone about a year ago. Some of the first apps I purchased were Air, Bloom and Trope. Simplistic and beautiful. I often wondered if there would ever be a next generation. I am thrilled Eno and Opal have gotten back together to create something for the iPad. It is just as easy, but even more beautiful because it is the next level of richness, a more full sounding creation. For those who love the Drone FX app as I do, you will also love this - but not for the same reasons. Sorry that's a bit vague. I mean they both have an important place in my sound scape making. For other people like myself who have crazy lives and need some peaceful way to decompress - this is the perfect app to get..Version: 1.0

Eno, always the geniusNicely done app, I want to give it 5 stars, but one thing holds me back: exclusion dilemma. The point of ambient is to soundtrack your life, so why can I not run Scape and go on to do other things while it plays?.Version: 1.0.1

The Future.Awesome. This is how albums need to be going forward. One complaint: there ought to be an iTunes download of the actual record. I find it very relaxing and would love to load it into my nano..Version: 1.0.1

Create your own ambienceGreat work, if you're a fan of somafm's drone zone channel, this i for you..Version: 1.0.1

Excellent app...but would be even better if it had Audiobus support..Version: 1.0.1

Interactive ambient sculptureMost Excellent! as an interactive work as well as an ambient release by eno/ chilvers.Version: 1.1

Eno does it again!Awesome app. The progressively unfolding options encourage interaction with the music. My one gripe is that you can't rename the pieces you create, and are left with the rather ambiguous "Scape 1", "Scape 2", etc. for titles. The ability to edit file names is pretty basic, and really quite necessary if you intend to spend a lot of time with the app. I hope to see this in a future update..Version: 1.0.1

A must-have for any music loverI've always been a fan of Brian Eno's ambient series, and this ingenious little app allows you to create your own music in a similar vein. The instructions are vague, and the results are a little confusing, but I can't help but think that's exactly the way it should be. The fact that it has 15 built-in 'scapes' means, in effect, that the purchase price includes a free new Eno release. I could play with this for years, and probably will..Version: 1.0.1

Engrossing and enigmatic.I have been using this fantastic app for several days - either as 'background' music or by actively engaging with it. I feel like I am deciphering an alien script and when new components unlock, they both add to my pleasure and deepen the mystery. Not about instant gratification, but about investment and exploration, which the app rewards. I'm hooked!.Version: 1.0.1

Fantastic new approach to musicThis is a sweet app. You find a sound which is pleasing to you, and you can listen to it while it evolves. Love it. Couple ways it could be better, like making your scapes shareable on Facebook and allowing us to specify how long we want it to play. Maybe a sleep timer too. Also making it available on iphone. But I have to say this is one of the best apps I have found this year..Version: 1.0.1

Ambient BlissI love this app. Easy to use, beautiful visually and sonically. I use it everyday, and it just gets better and better..Version: 1.0.1

If you only buy one ambient album this year......make it this app. It makes beautiful, haunting, intricate ambient music. It's so far impossible to make it sound awful. Sure, it would be nice to know exactly what the hell is actually going on, but the lack of detail kind of adds to the intrigue. I'm content to learn through experimentation if it all sounds like this!.Version: 1.0.1

SuperbI like all the Enossificated apps. I have Bloom and Trope and really like them too. But Scape is a cut above. And now it's even better because you can flex your imagination naming your own Scapes. You know, it's not for everyone. There's not a hard beat anywhere. But for those who crave mellowness and the loveliness of subtle sound textures there really isn't anything to beat this. Lovely..Version: 1.1

WonderfulFive stars easily deserved. This will give you years of enjoyment without having to listen to the same thing twice if you don't want to. From forests to deserts, from cities to industrial areas; it's all there. Turns everyone into a musician and turns musicians into heroes. It's hard to make something bad sounding even if you try. It's like a kitchen where you can mix all available ingredients and it will always taste good. What is not clear is who owns copyright to compositions made on Scape..Version: 1.0.1

No edits, no problem!!While I'm still waiting for the full music creation app this does have a nice effect. Sit back, relax..Version: 1.0.1

A lifetime is not long enoughThis is by far the most 'beautiful' app I have, and you could spend forever exploring all the combinations and possibilities. I've created some fascinating scapes, and I sincerely hope there's a way to keep this app going - I'd really hate to lose this app in the constant evolution of technology. I'm giving it 5 stars but if there's any criticisms, there's no way to offload scapes except by emailing them individually and they lose their names in the process..Version: 1.2

Endless possibilities in a limited scapeBeautiful, and I love the way it unfolds more and more options the more you use it. But I wish the visuals were as appealing as the sounds, and I really want to be able to name my scapes..Version: 1.0.1

Name your scapeAlready a great app for those that enjoy ambient music and/or creativity. The new update allows you to NAME each new scape you create, opening up a whole new level of expression and fun. This feature should have been in the original version, but it's here now. I find the generated sound collages excellent as background music while working. The app is also enjoyable for more focused scape creation..Version: 1.1

PINK FLOYD EAT YOUR HEART OUT!No idea what am doing but sounds amazing! :-).Version: 1.0.1

An endless ambient delightPeter Chilvers is not just Brian Eno's IT tech. His musical instincts have taken Brian Eno's sounds and concepts to a new, unique place. It's a shame the non-iDevice world doesn't get a taste of how interesting these various apps (and Scape in particular) are. If this style of music is to your taste, Scape is a quantum leap forward. Endlessly intriguing..Version: 1.0.1

My new addictionI love this app and use it daily. It really is my newest addiction. I would love to be able to set the running time of a scape, and to name them individually. All this and an Eno ambient album too for the price!.Version: 1.0.1

Subtle, yet stellar...Internal, yet cosmicThis is simply the most amazing piece of 'generative' music software ever. Great sounds to work with...and the way they evolve is masterful. Join Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers as a composer and create your own ambient masterpiece with them. This is stunningly good....Version: 1.0.1

Brilliant!Scape delights in so many ways, especially so if you've tried your hand at generative composition or ambient music, which is deceptively simple sounding but difficult to do well. Scape does it well and is full of subtle things and small revelations. The control and visual representation are masterful and add dimension. A real sonic playground, magic! It really needs: allow naming scapes and indicating what has been saved or modified. Expose a bit more about the rules of generation at play. Specify duration of scape. App Sharing. A nice external display rather than mirroring the controls..Version: 1.0.1

Near Ambience PerfectionA joy to use, even if the artwork and icons feel a little dated to me (80s throwback?). Rewarding to see more elements become available the more I use it! I appreciate that we are only limited to the sound sources within the app itself. I trust Eno's judgement, as to what works best with ambient music. I'd love to see a few more options in the future: editing previously created scapes, renaming, social sharing between friends, etc, but that does not hinder my current state of enjoying the app!.Version: 1.0.1

Don't be fooled by its simplicity...this is deep!I once spent more than a year in my spare time trying to track down a tune I heard on TV and just couldn't get out if my head. I eventually found it on ITunes to be one of Brian Eno's called Deep Blue Day. Ever since then I have been a big fan of his work. Brian is one of the worlds best composers of atmospheric, ethereal, unforgettable music. This app does not disappoint. It has Brian Eno written all over it. The cool thing is that you can compose music using complex constructs built in by the master himself, and instantly make music that could be straight off of one of his albums. I have read reviews suggesting lack of complexity - what!!!? Play with it a few more hours, listen to what you can make and think again. This apps changes as you creates new tracks so plenty of variability. Don't just play for 5 minutes and trash it. Experiment for a while and you will see that it is well worth the money. Brilliant!.Version: 1.0.1
