Eclipse - Boardgame for Negative User Reviews

Could be great. This is a great game. It has great rules and is challenging. It should be the best game in the AppStore. But it crashes constantly. I have only ever managed to get one play to the finish despite dozens of attempts. Please fix your game..Version: 1.0

Officially broken. As of March 2018, the game AI now hangs indefinitely on its first turn. Running an iPad Pro 9.7. Used to run great on my old iPad 2 a couple years ago good it seems that those days are gone now. Appears that this game is broken and no longer under development. Shame..Version: 2.0.5

Used to be greatLike most of the others reviews I'm having the same experience of seeing a serious downfall in the last release. As it stands right now I'm unable to play any online games because I can't connect my Game Center account. If this is s board game you really like I would keep your eye on the app for when (hopefully) they fix these issues because this really is an impressive implementation..Version: 2.0.5

Awesome! Now make with the expansion!Edit: online multi player is completely broken and flaky... this is a terrible shame because it ruins the long term value... I can't recommend getting this game until the developer decides to support it... VERY SAD It's like a portable tutorial for the board game, hope you release the expansion content too !.Version: 2.0.5

Great Game, need improvementMaybe I just don't know how to do those thing and they are already implemented in the app or maybe they will put them in the app on the next update, but there is some little thing that are missing, like the ability to see what your opponents did while you were offline. You come back into the game because it's your turn, the map has changed, some technology are gone, but you don't know who did it, you have the manually check everything everytime and you cannot check your ships or enemy things when it's not your turn, you have to wait your turn to check things up. There is alot of little things like that that they will probably fix in the future, so when they add some more options, I will give this app five stars because it deserve it!.Version: 1.0

Game ending crashesThe app is a beautiful, streamlined simulation of Eclipse. Great interface, nice tutorial, mixed AI and pass-and-play options, online capabilities... ...But the app has thwarted the last two games I tried to play. The app glitches out and prevents me from playing further. As nice as many of the aspects of this app are, unfortunately I cannot actually finish a game in this version..Version: 2.0.5

Poor Asynchronous SupportThe game is decent, but the Asynchronous Support is horrible (only a slight step above non-existant) When coming back from being away, the game doesn't show you what happened in between turns, you just have to figure it out from the current state of the game. Messages are also not persistent, so the only people who will see a message are those who are currently signed on, making even a workaround of the previous issue impossible. As is, this game is probably great for those who can dedicate a full couple of hours to playing simultaneously with others (either around the same tablet or online), but for those looking for Asynchronous play, you'll need to REALLY like the game for itself to overcome the lack of proper asynchronous-play features. (Check out PlayDek's Summoner Wars for good examples of asynchronous play, make chat persistent, and this could be quite an impressive game)..Version: 1.1

Al Rolls need to be fixedThe AI rolls in this game highly favor the AI, you basically have to spend all your time upgrading your ship, would be 5/5 if they fixed it.Version: 1.11

EngrossingAddictive game but why is it when i don't destroy all of the enemy forces with my plasma missiles my ships suddenly disappear? Is this a bug or a rule i don"t know about.Version: 1.0

Good game but..From the part of the game I've been able to play, I've enjoyed. It looks a great game but I'm unable to truly find out if it has any depth or longevity due to crashes and bugs. I've attempted to play at least 10 games, 7 of which permanently crashed on me 20mins in and the other 3 got stuck on the same bankruptcy scenario again around 20mins of play. As it is, it's unplayable. I look forward to a fix otherwise I will unfortunately need to request a refund..Version: 1.1

Good transcription, but very biased diceI am enjoying this app a lot, and it really helps explore different strategies. As the board game is a long game, this is great. My gripe is that after playing about 20 games it seems like the odds of "rolling a 5" is about 5-10%, while the computer player has odds of approx 33% to get a 6 and 50% to get a 5. It may be that this is just random luck, or a balancing technique. But if the later, it damages the viability of military strategies..Version: 1.13

Too buggy and poorly thought out in MPThere's a lot to admire with this app: it does an admirable job distilling a complex board game into an understandable iOS app. Very good interface and competent AI. But The async multiplayer needs some work. Most notably, you can't see what your opponents did in their turn. That's a huge problem. Even a text listing of their move should help. Multiplayer games are also clunky to start and maintain. Even worse is the fact that games will disappear from the servers. Save your money to spend on something that actually works..Version: 1.11

Fraud - Do Not Buy!Game is defective. It does not function. Do not buy! Seller is defrauding the public and should be banned from the App market. Apparently the seller is knowingly selling a defective app that will not function. (See the many complaints.) Seller will not correct app so it can be played..Version: 2.2.3

0 StarsImpossible to open the game and play. The app keep crashing. Looked like an interesting game though..Version: 2.0.5

OK, but hardly great port of a great boardgameAs a game, it is ok, but ot suffers hugely from being too clunky and slow. There's no way to automatically skip the AI turns/combat, and you have to keep on clicking during your own combat. Very annoying, and completely unnecessary. The game doesn't follow the same rules as the board game, something which I think makes for a poorer game. This game has too many problems for me to give it more than two stars, especially given how easy it would be to fix them....Version: 1.13

Barely functionalAI bots become stuck thinking, stalling the game. The developer’s website is down/gone. So sad that there isn’t any support for this game anymore..Version: 2.2.3

Good but...New to this type of game and really like it. However has a fatal bug affecting playability. Occasionally the battles don't work as they should, sometimes appearing as if you get consecutive goes then the battle ends with you losing. I'm stopping playing now till I see a new version. Please fix this!!!.Version: 1.0

Plodding and tediousSpend 30 seconds waiting for ai for every 10 seconds playing. So 3/4 of the game play is watching progress bars..Version: 1.1

This update is badMy online game not working since the new update.Version: 1.12

Unrefined implementation of excellent gameFirst off, the game. Eclipse is a five-star game. I had not played it before, and it is amazing. It is both difficult and satisfying, games play out wildly differently, I have fun even when I lose, and it offers a real chance for creative thinking to out maneuver your opponents. I'm glad I bought this, and it will be staying on my tablet as long as it's compatible. Secondly, the implementation. Oh, the implementation. First and foremost, this game commits the cardinal digital boardgame sin of abridging the manual because "the app takes care of that." I don't care. I need to know the mechanics of how my influence works and how it is capped, or else I can't make intelligent decisions. I need to know how and when I can initiate diplomatic relationships so I can plan correctly. I need to know, specifically, what triggers the traitor betrayal. In a game that takes over an hour even with AI opponents, trial and error is a miserable way to learn the fine points of a game. Secondly, the masking of information. Want to know how much an obelisk costs? Nope! Not in the manual. Nowhere on the general game screen. You'll have to select the build action, look at the build screen, and *hopefully* be able to exit back out or undo your role selection. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't, and the only way to find out is, again, trial and error. Obviously, you can't undo after a die roll, but there are some other gates that prevent an undo that can be frustrating. Similarly, there's no points breakdown at the end of a game. Why did I lose? No idea. VERY suddenly, the game will flash to an endgame screen with a single points total and I'll find out I lost. I can't even go back to look at how I got my OWN score, because the game never shows you how many 2 point discovery bonuses you took, and after endgame, even your own reputation tiles are masked (read 1-4). I still don't know if the technology bonus is cumulative (1+2+3+5 = 11 points) or max (straight 5 points for finishing the tech track). This will make it difficult to improve my performance, to say the least. Lastly are the bugs, which other people have mentioned. Once an AI ship jumped clear across the galaxy. Sometimes the AI stops taking turns and it's your turn over and over. Sometimes you get in a near-infinite pass loop and have to exit the game and reload. Once, in battle, I rolled a 1 about 6 times in a row (and the opponent missed 6 times in a row) - perhaps another one of these infinite loops or perhaps an odd twist of luck. In my last game, it seemed to blow straight through the final cleanup phases, which may have been a bug or may have been a bit of rules regarding influence or endgame that I don't know, because "the app handles it." Hard to say. I leave all of this here because there is no feedback button in the app and I'm hoping specifics will help the developer. I'll end as I started - AMAZING board game. I love it. I enjoy it. But you have to be aware that that last 10% of implementation does matter, and it's a big snag on the experience..Version: 2.0.5

Painfully stupidOne of the worst games ever... And the one that would make me reconsider trusting customer reviews as a decision making tool... The game is a strategy game that HAS to be played online, if you want to play it locally, the computer will play against itself, and you will be watching the game progress by itself!!! For a strategy game, it is repetitive, it is kinda like monopoly you explore new parts of the galaxy to find new resources using your limited resources, when you go into a fight with one of the competitors you fire bullets and have to literally drag some of them (don't know which ones and why) to hit opponents ships and hope they will get hurt!!!! Painfully Awful... Tutorial is LOOOOONG and boring yet this is because the game is EXTREMELY complicated and requires controlling too many things!! I find it a waste of Money. The only good thing about it is that you don't get dragged into IAPs. Usually I state what's missing to give the app 5 stars, yet with this one I can't see anyway I could give it more than a star. I dunno if all the great reviews are made up or my expectations were much higher than what people think... I think for such pricy apps, apple should force the developers to produce a trial version, so that people won't feel so badly hurt when they find out that the app they downloaded is ugly....Version: 1.0

Game is broken now.Use to be fun and just like the board game. My rating has gone from 5 to 1 one because of the massive amounts of bugs, glitches, and crashes. Do not buy, waste of money. This was the best alternative to a board game that was too painful to set up because of too many pieces..Version: 2.0.5

Multiplayer not there yetGenerally a good repro of a tried and tested board game. AI's are average but that is expected. The reason for only 3 stars is the online multiplayer vs other human players experience. 1) When it isn't your turn, your UI is frozen...you can't look at anything. There's no gameplay reason to lock out UI's and you lose momentum/interest. Bad gameplay but an easy fix. 2) no Undo when it is still your turn. Again, no gameplay reason for this and the functionality is already in the game vs computers. 3) You can't see what other players have done on their turn. When it is your turn, you just get to see the end-state of what other players. There is no game log, no animation of what the other players have done. You have to slueth out and recreate what each player has done on their turn. Again easy fix, since the functionality is already in the game vs. computers. Hope Eclipse folks address these issues..Version: 1.0

Good start but needs improvingThis game has great potential but I feel not ready yet. Several bugs and multiple crashes in game when doing certain explore actions. The most annoying of which auto saved on such a bug. Also the AI is not challenging enough on hard. I expected it to be a more polished game. Look forward to future updates to improve..Version: 1.0

Bugs kill the gameCrying shame too, used to be a favorite of mine..Version: 2.0.5

BrokenI can play the first turn then it gets stuck with the next AI player thinking..Version: 2.2.3

Clumsy iOS adaptationEclipse is a space conquest board game with dice-based combat. It's a very good game. It deserved a tablet version as good as Galaxy Trucker's, but instead it got this mediocre version that hasn't been updated since late 2013. The tutorial is bad - the text isn't retina, phrasing's awkward ("always consider to do Research"), it just tells you where to tap but doesn't highlight it, etc. The text is all this light blue "holographic" nonsense that's needlessly hard to read..Version: 1.11

AwesomeEasy to learn, fun to play.Version: 1.13

SlippingPicked this up for the first time in a while and found the interface unintuitive and a little buggy. Still no expansions, so I'm guessing it's dead..Version: 2.0.5

Update Made Game WorthlessOn an iPad 4, game no longer runs as I cannot get past the game setup screen. Human or AI selections will not load into available slots, then game simply locks up. I do not know which recent update caused this mess, Eclipse or Apple, but game is useless now......Version: 2.0.5

Used to be almost perfectUPDATE (4 stars to 2 stars): -- Latest updates fix some async issues, but have made the game sluggish and crashy. Wife and I could not finish our game. A great adaptation of a massive board game to iOS, with a few quibbles: -- Async works, but it is difficult/impossible to tell what the other players did between turns. -- Chat does not persist between sessions. -- Lack of color blind options. Not a problem for me, though sometimes the pink and orange look very close to each other. -- Space battles require too many clicks. -- Research discounts are not clear (even after playing through the tutorial). This discount is already computed, which is a good thing. So I don't understand why the research icons show little discount markers above them. -- The minus signs for Advanced Robotics and Quantum Grid were confusing. In the board game these were plus signed because you gain influence tokens. That may seem like a long list, but they are really minor things. Very much looking forward to the expansion!!!.Version: 2.0.5

Disappointed so far ...Bought this after huge quantity of ultra-positive recommendations from Board Game Geek. So far, hard to see what the fuss is about. Crashes all the time (iPad 2): Explore - Influence - Crash - Go back a move - Restart - Wait for turn - Explore - Influence - Crash etc etc. When it doesn't crash, I haven't yet discovered what is so good; feels repetitive and not very exciting. Lauded UI is just confusing for someone who doesn't know the board game already. What IS this technology? Why can't I buy this technology? Why can't I upgrade my ship? Why did I just go bankrupt without the chance to un-influence etc etc. Maybe it will reward more time and investment; it's certainly not love at first sight. I want to explore the universe. Instead I seem to jump from point to point for no obvious point. I think I'll have another game of Alien Frontiers to remember what a fun sci-fi strategy game is like!.Version: 1.0

Great game, but keeps buggingLove the game, both the board game ans the app. But, recently the game keeps bugging. Multiplayers game I am involved in disapear halfway through or the app crashes each time I try to enter one or my current game or now even the game list. Unfortunately, I have not found a way to report those bugs or get support from the designer team or get news on server availability or problems.Version: 1.13

Freezes instantly!Upon the AI's first turn, the entire app freezes! Please fix!.Version: 2.0.5

I liked this game until the recent patchSo many balance problems and the recent patch has only made them worse. Plasma missiles are very overpowered and anti matter cannon is useless. The races that can expand quickly early on have a huge advantage which is not offset enough. Planta starts off with the ability to expand extremely rapidly and also has high starting resources. There are also loads of bugs..Version: 2.0.5

Great Game that has been brokenThis used to be a great adaptation of a great game; unfortunately the recent update completely borked it. As many others have reported, it now fails most of the time, and it's almost impossible to complete a game. A great shame, as despite a few minor glitches it used to be a fun, playable game - but now it's unplayable, and should be removed from the stroe..Version: 2.0.5

Recent updates broke the game...Okay, i bought this about a year ago, and the game played great. the ai was challenging but fair. all the combats played out properly. cut to 2017, there has been a couple of updates that ocurred in late 2016 since i last played. first problem, massive lag. i open the app and there is a several seconds of delay before the menu options appear. then, while playing, there's a 1-2 second delay after EVERY action. before the update, this was never an issue. during combat, there's a delay between every shot. the game no longer shows the dice rolls. you can't tell what's going on. then, the ai get broken sometimes. sometimes it gets stuck in a decision loop and just freezes. in one game, i moved my ships and then tried to undo the action and then the game glitched out, put my ships back where they were but then also left duplicates in the new sectors but then i was unable to end my turn. i could slide the button but the game would not allow me to end it. in another game, i saved the game to return to it later and when i reloaded the game, it glitched out and gave me maxed out numbers on every resource but i was unable to execute any commands and had to start over. this update broke the game completely FUBAR. the game is literally (not figuratively) UNPLAYABLE in this state. and it makes no sense, because the game was perfectly fine before. if not for this, i would have given it 5 stars, but in it's current state, i must rate it at the minimum and recommend that you do not buy it because it is broken..Version: 2.0.5

Not a game reviewI couldn't play this game because the writing was too small on my iPad. It would surely be totally impossible to play this on an iPad mini or iPhone..Version: 2.0.5

Hopeful... disappointed.I saw that this app had an update 2 months ago and a positive review a month ago, so I gave it a try. The tutorial glitched out so hard that I couldn't use the save file, but I know how to play the game, so I figured I could muddle through the interface. My first game vs a few AI had me unable to select planets to colonize after my Advanced Economy research, the map scroll and zoom were frustrating at best, and the turn order never changed based on pass order. Basically unplayable. Hopefully Apple approves my refund..Version: 2.2.3

Poor tutorial - fix for 5 starsI'm sure I am going to love this game, but I have some major issues with the tutorial. I will gladly bump up my rating when they are fixed. So far (barely two rounds in) the only issues I have are straightforward and easily reparable. 1) the grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax are jarring and embarrassing. For the most part I understand the various points the tutorial is trying to make, but for such a professionally-crafted app, I expect good, clear English. I hope the tabletop version of the game doesn't have this issue in the printed rules. 2) My playing "through" the tutorial has been interrupted twice, and each time I had to start it over! The first time was due to my exiting to the main menu because I thought the tutorial had frozen when in fact I just hadn't realized there was more text within one of the slides/windows (so it wasn't clear that one could scroll within this segment) and the second was when I had exited the app (but not force-closed it). In each case I had no way to resume the tutorial!! Frustrating to say the least. Now I realize I will need to commit to an uninterrupted window (I'm guessing at least 30 minutes) to go all the way through the tutorial without pausing. Please fix these issues, since they are very basic!.Version: 1.11

Unfortunately unbroken…Can play first turn but then gets stuck on AI thinking. Looks like it would be a brilliant game if fixed.Version: 2.2.3

Great game with poor UIGreat implementation of the board game, and like the best board games it's simple to learn and difficult to master. Unfortunately the UI has problems galore. Firstly don't access the menu during the tutorial (where the rules are stored) because you'll lose all your progress. Many of the buttons are fiddling vertical bars or buttons, when the UI could let you click in huge sections of the screen to progress. If you want to view another player it's an awkward hold in a tiny portion of the screen while trying to simultaneously click in other parts of the screen. And while tooltip a exists for some parts of the UI they're missing for others. Also there's no way to randomly assign factions. Performance is poor and there seems to be no way to just have the AIs take their turns, you have to click to start and end every battle they're in..Version: 1.13

Bug needs fixingI have enjoyed this game however it appears to have a huge bug in space combat, when you are fighting an opponent that is hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, it allows you to fight a round then your ships just disappear, it is a huge blot on an otherwise flawless conversion of a great board game, please fix this....Version: 1.11

Fix TutorialThere's no way to resume your Tutorial game once you go to the Main Menu. This has seriously hindered my desire to get into the game. First time I ran the tutorial and quit I had to start again I could forgive, just had to skip a couple of turns worth of dialogs... but the second time I'd got much deeper into it and now I don't want to start again! Please fix this issue so that I have more confidence in the app to play again..Version: 1.0

Without option to remove missiles, very same-yMissiles are overpowered, removing them improved the game a lot. One off the latest “updates” no longer allows this, so the game is now deleted from my ‘Pad..Version: 2.0.5

CRGood adaptation of the board game. However, the 'plasma missile' technology is a complete game-breaker. The AI equips them as soon as possible and becomes almost invincible. House rule them out in the board game, but in this version they make it unplayable at higher levels. Speaking of higher levels, the difficulty curve is slanted; playing against multiple AIs on anything other than the lowest setting also appears to affect probability; the system always scores higher, and has better board placement. The adaptation is good, but I strongly suggest the plasma missiles be removed and the 'randomness' repaired, because it's just too difficult to get anywhere otherwise..Version: 1.11

Flawed gemAmazing game most of the time but a couple of game breaking bugs hold it back. Choosing the cheapest tech alien discovery always crashes my single player games and alien techs can be duplicated in online games. Once those are fixed though, as I'm sure they will be, the game is easily five stars.Version: 1.0

Game stuckHalf way through I was resolving a forced bankruptcy and I fixed it but then it went to the next player and now the game is just stuck like the ai doesn't realize it's their turn.Version: 1.13

Newest update influence problemsMost of the game works fine but whenever I'm using the influence action it seems I can't influence empty hexes that I'm next to and it really messes up the game.Version: 2.0.5

Used to be good. Now, it’s useless.I used to enjoy this game on iOS, but it had been a couple of years since I’d last tried to play it. Now it just freezes, as other reviewers have said. And what a disappointment it was to find this out. I guess it’s time for the delete button on this one, but I will miss it..Version: 2.2.3

The worst version of an excellent gameThis app is built with the original rules of the game, which had some balance issues. Notably, the missiles don’t require power, so loading them up on a dreadnaught with some computers is unstoppable. It also doesn’t implement some notable improvements from the game’s expansions, such as variable turn order. For some reason, the game also considers moving through an allied species’ unoccupied territory as an aggressive action and gives you the traitor penalty. Hopefully, the publisher will upgrade the app and enable content from the expansions some day. The actual board game is excellent in its current iteration..Version: 2.2.3

Waste of moneyToo complex. The user interface takes non-intuitive to a whole new level. It might make sense if you had played the board-game, but if you're looking for an entertaining space-strategy game, this isn't it..Version: 1.11

Unplayable - Game crashesDon’t buy. I finished my first turn and the game freezes with the next AI player “contemplating their turn”..Version: 2.2.3

Great port, but hopeless if colourblind!A great port of a great board game, but sadly they've changed the brown Materials planets to a shade of green that is precisely indistinguishable from the the orange Economic planets, if you're colourblind. Unlike with the player colours, there are no other visual markers to make it possible to tell the planet types apart, leaving the game entirely unplayable for some people..Version: 1.11

Good game, some dubious stuffA reasonable recreation of the original board game, with some AI generally decent enough to at least go through the motions of competing. A few issues: 1. Hydran AI is terrible, so blue AI needs to be Terran 2. AI prioritizes ancient-busting to the point that there’s little point for a human player to choose Draco 3. There is some very dubious “randomness” is the explore tiles. The human player can expect to get the worst tile available..Version: 2.2.3

BugsI want to like it. But I have played a handful of times and the same thing keeps happening. The game appears to stop functioning and I am presented with an endless displays of the PASS button (even thugh no AI competitors appear to move in the interim). The only way I have found to continue is to exit tp the main menu and then select "Resume". But soon again it resumes this behavior. Basically a dead app for me now. Which is a REAL shame because if this worked it would be one of my faorite apps..Version: 2.0.5

Enjoy playing but crashesSo far, almost 20% of my Eclipse games have crashed or hanged on me. I'll keep trying it and enjoy it when I can finish a game. Maybe an issue with ios8? Dunno..Version: 1.11

I love The Boardgame and want to love this, but game breaking bugsThe boardgame is my favorite boardgame. I used to love this app and really want to love it now. But... there are tons of game breaking bugs that flat out prevent you from playing it. I wish the dev would address them. I understand there is no money to be made in supporting a game down the line, but, they could release expansions as DLC. Unfortunately this is neglectware 😢. If the dev comes back and fixes it, I would gladly revise my rating. I currently can not launch a single player game at all. I get to the race selection screen but it will not allow me to select my race. I tried removing and reinstalling the app to no avail..Version: 2.0.5

Bad updateEclipse is a fun game. However, the recent update has made it unplayable on my iPad. The game stops working a few turns into a match.Version: 2.0.5

Great until...This is a good port of Eclipse. And overall it's a fine game but seems lots of people and award givers are easily impressed. There are a lot of options, but only one will lead you to victory, military conquest, because that's where the points are most easily gained. The balance of the three main areas of progression, economic, science, and materials is skewed as pretty much it is all money as that is the power behind influence and that is your limit on actions. And sure the game is great, until the preemptive missile tech comes out and then the game degenerates quickly, the missiles are totally undercosted and the best defense is your own missile loaded ship slightly faster. If it was one missile or cost a couple points of energy fine but they are ridiculous. It's a game design flaw you can drive a dreadnought through. So my rating is middle of road, game is fun but flawed so it becomes repetitive and degenerate, the port is good with nice interface..Version: 1.0

Buggy for a "bug focused" releaseLook at the release notes for the aug 22 release and they're filled with bug fixes but since the update mine crashes very regularly. I've lost 2 of my last 3 games to this now. Very frustrating, but otherwise a great game. Yes the AI turns are slow but this is a deep game and I'll live with that..Version: 1.1

Garbage - don't waste your moneyWaste of time and money. Plenty of better games available for less..Version: 1.11

Game is great but AI is brokenPrevious versions of this app were great, and the game is fantastic, but since the overhaul the AI does not move on its turn, no matter how long you wait. Ipad Pro 9.7". Please fix!.Version: 2.0.5

Where’s the Bug Repellant?A challenging board game seemingly excellently reproduced except for a few balance issues, EXCEPT it now appears infested with game killer bugs. Prior to the last few updates I didn’t have much trouble with this game, yet now can’t finish one. It’s now unplayable at least in Sept 2017..Version: 2.0.5
