Canary Mail: Secure Inbox & AI for Negative User Reviews

Decent, but for the price missing basic customization optionsBeen trying Canary out to move away from basic iOS mail app and to be able to use gpg keys to sign and encrypt. Overall not bad but for the price I’m kind of shocked it doesn’t do basic things like pull photos for people from your contacts or allow you to remove that terrible “category” section from the menu. Maybe I need to catch up with the times or something but I don’t need my email to categorize things for me and I’d rather have faster access to the individual mailboxes. I’m also confused about why the signature box feels so much bigger than the text box of the email. I don’t use signatures and you should be able to turn that off and it not even be a text box in the compose section any more. Security or convenience I guess. But I’m just kind of shocked that for the price some of the basic little things that pretty much every other mail app does is missing here. Am I going to pay? No. Why pay for an app that doesn’t do any of the things free app do just for pgp / gpg use on my phone? Canary doesn’t support my old version of OS X and so just to be able to use gpg on my phone doesn’t seem worth the price. Add the features that every other app has and I’m willing to pay..Version: 3.85

Horrible UI changesBeen using this for a while, but there have been some horrible UI changes recently. On every email there is now a summarize section, which is blue on black, so it stands out. No way to remove that, without me paying for Pro. An update to this for yet another ill thought out UI change. As is the current trend of everyone, they’ve added an AI option. The button for it is right beside send. For fat fingered folk like me, I’ve hit it by mistake so many times..Version: 4.08

Priority is privacy so prove itI tested the app on ios and macos, seems very interesting features etc, although the price to pay for every single device yet at this stage seems way to high... I found the ios version to be quite slow especially when launching the ap/opening a message from a notifications etc (all pretty fast on my phone). The notifications are way slower than default mail app or other ones. But mainly since your main selling point is privacy, security, there should be clear detailed evidence of that... is canary open source? was it peer reviewed and audited? unbiased external articles/testing proving so? there should be a clear comparison table of functionalities vs other clients such as thunderbird, ios mail etc. Till then I can't use and pay for the service. If you have any such documentation thanks for forwarding it. Regards.Version: 3.08

CrashesNot able to use due to multiple crashes. Appears to be not compatible with iOS 17.Version: 4.22

Can't justify it anymore. Overpriced. There is a plethora of ways for users to send and receive encrypted/private messages, and I cannot see how email is truly a viable, everyday option anymore. Specially at this price point, when all users need is minimal information..Version: 4.31

Couldn’t get encryption to workI’m an experienced PGP user but I struggled to get it to work on CanaryMail. It seemed to download keys from an SKS server but the fingerprints didn’t match (I compared directly to a web server and to GPG) and when I sent emails using the downloaded key they were unreadable as seemed to be using unknown keys. I tried multiple times but couldn’t get it to work. I also tried sending email to a Protonmail account (downloading from SKS) but it formatted the PGP wrong and was not readable by Protonmail. I gave up..Version: 3.02

Buggy app; terrible supportI want to like this app, but it’s riddled with bugs and missing features. Having spent £30 on both versions, it’s not unreasonable to expect some level of support. The ‘Report a bug’ link in the application and the ‘Support' link in the App Store take you to a read-only forum. The only way to get in contact is live chat, which is mostly offline or unmanned. For a company that produces email software, why is there not a support email address? Very disappointing..Version: 2.05

FrustratingGood app generally but I have an issue when not connected to WiFi . It says offline and I press the connection button but it won’t connect despite having mobile data allowed I have to go to another email app spark to get emails and that gets them no problems..Version: 3.34

I want to like itI have used this app several times over the past couple of years and had to uninstall it again. It seems to have some fundamental issue where it will not show new mail unless I quit the app and reopen it. I can have it open side by side with another mail client, and the other one will show the new message but Canary will not, no matter how many times the re-sync action is requested. It looks like it's doing it, as the little spinner spins and the last updated time changes to the current moment, but the new messages do not show up in the list until the app is killed and restarted. This is generally frustrating with all mail, but particularly painful with login codes that are delivered via email..Version: 4.17

Don’t buy this appSincerely this app is problematic! I lost 14 dollars in this app. BE SURE TO TRY BEFORE YOU PAY. HAS MANY ISSUES WITH PRIVACY..Version: 2.21

AbysmalThis app is a joke, all of these reviews must be fake.. If you want to use gmail, try the gmail app, or lose business and customers when Canary fails, oh ya, nice UI though lol. What a joke..Version: 3.88

Just not impressedBeen using this app for 2+ years and it always struggles to send emails. You have to keep the app open. Very cumbersome experience, sometimes attachments don’t even send. Very frustrating, looking into other options..Version: 4.04

Was great - charging for new features is bad.Bought this, yes I bought this over a year ago for £9.99. Great app, end to end encryption, all my emails in one place. Now with this new update they want to charge another £9.99. This is bad decision by Canary, as you don’t care about your existing customers who already bought this. Apart from this bad decision the app is great if you want your emails to be safe and encrypted. You just need to remember those customers who already funded your bank balance..Version: 3.01

Very unreliableWhile the app is in its essence almost everything I’m looking for out of an email app, in practice the experience is incredibly frustrating. The team behind the app has invested very little into any sort of error handling or signaling issues to the user. This has plagued the app ever since I started using it a couple of years ago, manifesting in a number of ways, such as frequently disconnected accounts with zero feedback, failed syncs with zero feedback, stuck syncs with zero feedback, emails failing to load with zero feedback, drafts getting lost with zero feedback, etc. — you get the pattern. While some of these have been fixed over time, it took months to even get past the most basic issues, and new ones are constantly popping up, all with the same pattern of sloppy engineering. If email is an important part of your life, I’d strongly recommend staying away from this app. I have not experienced anything close to this from any other email app I’ve tried..Version: 3.74

Doesn’t synch to iWatch correctlyThought I’d try the app. Downloaded and works ok on phone. Such with iWatch isn’t working correctly, some messages show others don’t and decided to delete..Version: 2.21

What a complete take!Got the app; started off ok, but then total chaos and I was not able to get the mail. SMTP verified - imap not accepted: Mail provider cloud not work out why my mail was being non-supported and all settings were reset to normal status. Deleted canary and all emails were returned with no problems! Apple mail may not be the smartest mail option, as far as glitzy emails go; but it does do the job and it works fine. Hopefully they can deliver an update to rival and exceed others with identity security, and features..Version: 4.17

Loads foreverWhen there is a notification, it takes a while for it to open and load which ideally should not be the case. If the app was not closed then it’s on the last opened mail for a few second and then the new mail opened via notification shows itself. Uninstalling the app as I now realize this is why I deleted the app the first time I tried this..Version: 4.31

So much potentialThis could easily be my favourite email app if it just was so unreliable. It has amazing features like unsubscribe button and ai summarise but it falls flat in terms of usability - syncing emails between devices is extremely delayed and makes this hard to use for more than device - some emails with outlook just straight up won’t load, if you open an email thread and click on some of the items of the thread there will just be blank - notifications about a new email is really quick, faster than the mail app. But if you open that notification the app just goes insane trying to sync everything and most of the time you won’t even see that email you were notified about until you pull to refresh I understand the recent interest in AI is forcing the market to move fast but there is so much neglect that all the ai features become pointless if I can’t open an email on my device.Version: 4.33

Its ok!Ive gone through at least 5 now, IOS mail, Gmail, Spark, Edison, Airmail—So far canary has met my needs the most. The two issues Ive had are: Sending mail seems to be awkward, and i get an error message several times before it actually (the message) goes out. Finally, the worst issue I’ve seen is: My drafts feature is not working. Ive lost 20 min of work 2x now by the app timing out and the draft not being saved. Other than that, I’m loving it... Update on April 2, 21...Drafts are still disappearing. I cant find them after I start them, seems to be a lag in some situations with iOS. I start typing and cant see text for a few words until it catches up. I don’t know if a qualify as a power user. I send and receive about 50 emails a day. Stars keep dropping with continued use. I regret the $20 I spent already. I don’t use the calendar option at all as Fantastical is my go to. So perhaps this was just a poor choice on my behalf.Version: 3.24

Sound of frustrationSo far, so good… or OK. There are some features I'd like to see here that I've seen in other clients that are useful… export to EML, undo doesn't undo anything, message filtering to folders, single price for iOS and desktop … though the thing that gets me most is the inability to turn of the the sent mail 'swoosh' sound. Which is baffling since there's no sound for new mail even when on. It may seem trivial, but that annoying take-off 'swoosh' makes me regret my purchase. Support has told me that's not an 'option' which makes me nervous about what else wont be after more use is under my belt. It's my own fault for getting excited something actually worked and not diving in deeper with the trial version, but I assumed turning sound off/on would be a given at any level. It's a dealbreaker for me unfortunately though there's a lot to like here..Version: 3.07

IssuesI want this to be my email client, but I keep being pushed away by issues. Often I find it quite ‘clunky’ and slow to load emails. Now I’m facing issues with notifications not working at all for my emails making it borderline useless as an email app. For paying £20 I feel like this should be further along now. It’s been years and development is far too slow..Version: 3.34

Free to try? Are you serious..Don’t make an app free then try and make your customers pay for it days later. That is not free, that is lying..Version: 2.01

BuggyUnable to add a custom account/IMAP server with advanced settings. The sign in button does not work and no UI feedback is given.Version: 3.20

Why?Can someone give me one reason why I can’t use a light theme in this app only without setting the whole iPhone to a light theme!!!!.Version: 3.86

Don't know if it has improved or notI tried this app about a year or 2 ago, and wasn't satisfied because it didn't talk to pgp keyservers, decryption problems when viewing gpg encrypted emails that had attachments and a few other things. Went back to try it again to see if it had improved, but I guess they retain records of previous trial apple id users (or apple does, don't really know), and that means I can't try it out to see if it has improved. Most of the useful features require a pro or enterprise account to use, so I couldn't really see if it is worth my time or not. So, I don't know. I can't find out without sending them some cash, but just not willing to risk it, considering my previous experience with it. It'd be nice to be able to see if it's improved, but I guess that's out of the question. That's a shame, since this is the only ios app out there that will deal with pgp encrypted email in a half-way decent manner, so for now, I'll just keep waiting until I'm in front of my laptop and use gpgtools with the apple macos app. Response to marketing team: Thank you for confirming. I still believe it’s a poor strategy. There are many potential customers out there who have tried using Canary in the past, but, due to software issues, stopped using it, and would like to try it again, to see if it’s improved. It’s a risky bet to pay again just to see if programming errors have been fixed or not. $3 is $3..Version: 3.69

Not worth the money or downloadI gave this app a chance due to the reviews and paid the $20 (!!) for the Mac OS version. The emails don’t always come through. Many will stay in loading mode without a preview or email being shown. I was on the phone with a client who sent an email and although it came through, clicking on it had me waiting for the spinning symbol to stop. It never did. I had to log into Apple Mail (my backup) to view it. Same for directions sent to me. At the light and looked up where the designated parking was in an email. Canary left it spinning and not loading. And they wanted me to pay ANOTHER $20 for the iOS app?! Nah! I gave it a chance for about 9 months hoping the updates would be better. They never fixed the “forever loading” messages. I went back to Spark on both apps and all is back working 100%. Deleting Canary. Enjoy my $20. Won’t happen again..Version: 3.25

Decent but lackingThe app ticks most of the boxes but the reply or compose lacks the ability to really customize fonts. I find the font size very small and hard to read when it comes to email composition. If it defaulted to system font that would be better or allows for font size increase and boldness..Version: 3.27

Random GlitchesCan’t figure out what the deal is. I’ll get repetitive notifications on an email that I’ve already read. Seems like some glitches that need to be worked out..Version: 4.47

Every new version new bugs are introducedGot the new version …. fixed the old bugs …. no but got a whole bunch of new ones …. the developer has created an impassible help desk with no escalation and no way to report the ever increasing amount of functionality. Not even the notification count works in this version..Version: 3.27

Great concept. Not so good execution1. The app is occasionally buggy: 2. AI composing sometimes just sommerizes the email instead of responding to it 3. Search function is off-target occasionally 4. Could have more swipe menus 5. Should have an option to send something immediately instead of the default wait time of at least 5 seconds 6. Read receipts is nice.Version: 4.32

ImpressionsOverall Canary is a great email service however the main concerns that I have had with it. I’ve been the ease and adding attachments such as photos for security options for Face ID and/or password that’s just not fluid at all. I’m consistently having to click on face ID in order for it to actually recognize my face rather than just click in the app, and they have doing what it needs to do..Version: 3.84

Snail mail4 minutes waiting for the content of a email to download and no success. Waste of time..Version: 3.78

CrashingI bought this app for the desktop and iPhone. It is impossible to read emails on the iPhone in dark mode. As far as the desktop version is concerned, when one clicks on the icon it is not registered as being open and it is impossible to get into preferences because the computer does not register it as being open. As far as I’m concerned, this application is very buggy. I spent £30 on it, £20 for the desktop and £10 for the iPhone version and I’m extremely disappointed given that is such an expensive product..Version: 2.10

Nice features but needs improvementReally like some of the features (snooze, unsubscribe) Co-pilot is cool but not that smart especially in a email thread, and usually wastes more time than saves for emails that are not direct one on one The main issue I have is lots of time to archive, send emails and download attachments. I keep have to reload the app to send an email. And some emails do not get sent if closed out too early. The pdf reader also doesn’t work well when the phone is flipped horizontal making reading attachments frustrating (long download and then tough to read) Would be an awesome app if they fixed these issues.Version: 4.44

Loved it during trial… problems sinceJust email app I’ve tried that has features I want to use and does what I need. However, since paying for the full version 5 days ago I’ve had issues with the app crashing when I delete single emails - I frequently read an email then delete. The app crashes half the times I do this now, I can’t find any help on the faqs or any way to report this to the devs..Version: 3.41

UPDATE DIDN’T FIX THE SCREW UPUPDATE DID NOT FIX THIS SCREWUP, STILL HAVE HUGE CIRCLE ICONS AT THE TOP. Get rid of these stupid huge circle icons at the top of my emails. I just updated the app & I can’t get rid of these hideous huge round icons. I don’t have favourites, I don’t have a Pro subscription. This is driving me crazy!!!.Version: 3.77

Pay monthly for an email client?Whilst this claims to be free, you’re forced into a 30 day trial upon initial setup so you won’t know if you can get by without ‘pro’ for 30 days. Looking at the pro features, you’re gonna want most of them and the ‘pro’ is a subscription feature meaning you’ll be paying every month or annually for EMAIL. There is no one-off option. Because of that I won’t be testing any further, which is a shame..Version: 3.78

Full of features but not recommendedUI is fine but too many issues after months of trying. Used with one Google Workspace account and then 365 to compare. Finally had to give Canary up. Primary problems: 1. Unreliable notification interactions lead to a barrage of alerts when switch back to the app. Failed to move message alerts for delete and archive. Canary support says the app has to be running but it is. It’s just in the background, where it has permissions to run. Any other app can do this. I just stopped interacting with the notifications altogether. 2. Composing an email and then sending means waiting, even with the delay disabled. If you switch to another app, you’ll get a notification to open the app because it’s still sending. I’ve sent replies only to find out hours later that it hadn’t sent them. 3. Crashes. More on Mac than iOS but enough that I don’t have time to submit tickets for each. 4. Laggy. Loading, deleting, refreshing. Weirdly, iOS notifications are fast but in-app, you can sit and watch your mail get shuffled around. 5. Apple Watch app has no complications. 6. The AI features are bloat. They’re unpredictable and take more time to finesse than actually doing it yourself. Luckily you can turn them off. If this mail client had the same performance as the brand apps for Google and Microsoft but with the Canary UX, I’d be happy..Version: 4.31

Good but…I have just started using Canary and am having fun learning all its nuances. I want to get the Pro version because I like to be able to use all features available. What is stopping me , and I only have 50% of my free version left, is that the app has started quitting after using it for more than 30 minutes. Having read the most recent reviews that also cite this issue, maybe I should have use my buyer beware sense, but also found enough prior reviews that were good. So I took a leap of faith and downloaded the app. I will keep the free version as long as it usable and I will continue monitoring version updates. I hope that this resolved in a timely fashion because you have a good product and you don’t want to alienate current users or discourage potential new users. Thanks!.Version: 3.96

Desperate for moneyThe recent continuous bleating of the app for users to pay money as the only way to turn off Canary spam that inflicts all emails is a pathetic ploy..Version: 4.03

Doesn’t work properlyI have a subscription to canary through SetApp but the app on My phone constantly insists I must pay a separate subscription to get the full benefits on My phone despite already being subscribed through SetApp. I’ve been using the app for months but every day I get a notification for a welcome message telling Me to start by adding an account... I have more than 3 accounts active on the app and use them daily. There’s also no way to turn these notifications off. I receive emails and notifications non stop about starting using canary, and I don’t understand why since I use the app on a daily basis. There’s also NO way to turn these marketing notifications off without silencing the app completely. It works but not completely. It’s really frustrating to be unable to stop it from emailing Me and notifying Me about useless information that’s intended for those who just created an account. I hope they fix it because it’s starting to drive Me crazy..Version: 3.08

Near perfectThe only options missing are a black icon, and also I can’t seem to see an option to undo deleted emails. These stop me from upgrading and using as my daily email app..Version: 3.22

Great for GPG but limited editorI choose this app because it seems to be the only one on the market that integrates seamlessly with PGP. My email hosting provider encrypts my emails, so I need an email client capable of managing this encryption. This is not too difficult on a desktop where there is greater scope for integrating plugins with standard email clients. But, until I found Canary, there was no simple means of receiving and sending emails on my devices. Generally, the app works well and does the type of things you would expect. The reason for only giving 3 stars is the very basic text editor. Bold, underline and italics are the only formatting available for emails. This is really disappointing from a modern email app..Version: 3.34

Too hard to understandCan’t even add a new account. This is only for computer experts. Don’t get sucked into paying like I did. Update : having a response from support team I have managed to add my email accounts. Actually very easy but I have been sick with cancer which unfortunately can blur one’s mind. Would recommend Canary as one of the best email apps once you get used to it. It’s not free but not overly expensive..Version: 4.15

Crashes every time, not worth the moneyI paid $15 for this app a while ago just for them to release an update that I have to pay for again. The app crashes every time I open it or open a notification, and on the off chance it opens emails just disappear until you re index your mailbox. Do not buy this app.Version: 3.12

Needs work…I wanted to like this app. After upgrading to a PC, I needed an email client that would work on both my iPhone and the PC. I love Spark, but they don’t have a PC version yet, so I opted for Canary. Unfortunately, it just isn’t that good. I’ll delete emails and it won’t be reflected that I did on the badge number. Someone’s I get an error that it couldn’t “move it” at the server, and those deleted emails come back. It never moves spam on its own. Why am I telling the app what’s spam if the app never learns from it?! Does it work for checking email?! Sure, but don’t expect a robust piece of software here, it’s not. The PC version isn’t any better. It crashes, and I can’t manage created folders in my email account with it. I definitely will not be renewing my subscription in a year when it runs out. I’m going back to Spark on my phone, and I’ll just use iCloud in a browser on the PC if I need to deal with email there..Version: 3.65

Had enough of it abusing notifications with tips etcResponse to developer: Using notifications to show off features is invasive and unwanted. Notifications should literally be just for notifications of new emails. It’s actually not that different from sending people the same via email and I would argue that having your hard opt-in is a violation of the UK’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulation 2003 (which requires soft opt-in for all electronic communications) not to mention the upcoming GDPR. I would recommend having a guided tour instead that people can either view or skip..Version: 2.05

For the most part goodBut I have recently encountered two issues: Firstly when responding to an email in poor reception, the email I sent vanished, it wasn’t in sent mail or drafts. After a few attempts I gave up, only for all three attempts to suddenly appear again and send later 2 hours after being back in good reception. The 2nd issue relates to formatting, as I use canary for business often emails are sent highlighting various issues or questions, the way I typically receive responses is for the other party to reply to the email by responding to each point in red text. Unfortunately canary strips the red text formatting making the responses difficult to find..Version: 3.89

Refresh is WAY TOO SLOW!The rest of the app is great but it’s like being on dialup again to actually get your email updated unless you have it pushed to your phone. All other mail apps are LIGHT YEARS faster than this. Bummer..Version: 3.69

Never works or even connectsHave tried to use this app many many times. Every time I sign into my Gmail account, an alert pops up about enabling IMAP, which I have already done. Nothing that I have tried has fixed it, and I have gone through absolutely all of my Gmail settings. My email address works with every other app, except this one. It’s a shame..Version: 3.96

Still no proper Hebrew support! Many months ago I submitted a bug report on the Devs' previous support platform Canny about Canary's incomplete support of typing in Hebrew. Initially they've responded and implemented a sort-of fix which didn't really work. I reported this again but now the Canny system is gone and the bug still exists, whilst my feedback emails are completely ignored. Shame on the lack of commitment and communication! UPDATE: The Developer's response to my original review/complaint had nothing to do with the substance of what I was writing. Proves my point, really..Version: 2.06

Interesting model but needs to improveI like that you are able to try the tool for 5 days. Unfortunately 5 days is not enough to stick to a new email client from a previous experience, specially when there are limitations and bugs. I contacted the chat business support which I have to say is quite neat and works fine, with replies next day. They answered my questions and were interested in things that were not supposed to be wrong but indeed where in an iPad Pro with Apple Keyboard. Some of these bugs apparently got resolved in an update but since the trial period was over I updated the app and couldn’t verify this. I suggest that the trial period is zeroed with each new version. This would eventually attract new customers that are seeking for bugs to be fixed or new functionality implemented (to me, being able to load external images on a message by message basis). Otherwise the app will be deleted and forgotten..Version: 2.02

Can’t make a folderAfter much frustration trying to create a folder in my inbox I found it can only be done from my laptop interface What a waste of time trying this app out Can’t use a basic function on the iPhone UI.Version: 4.12

Was hoping this would be the new Newton...On first setting up the application everything seemed great. Clear, clean, well designed. Sadly the cracks begin to appear when you start to use the app. Email size limits don't fall in line with the email provider. Sending a document I had previously sent via another third party email client wasn't possible with canary. Due to file size limitations (?). I emailed canary to no avail. No response. So no idea if it's a bug or a setting I've missed etc. When setting a password to enter the app, when reopened canary reverts back to having no password in the settings and not requiring a password to enter. When sending emails if you select the recipient erroneously and wish to change it you can't. There's no way to delete them and add another. I would have wrote another email to raise these issues but having no response from my previous email I'd prefer to leave a review of my experience with the application. Sadly what could be a good email client turns out to be less than it could be..Version: 3.02

Too buggysI was ready to do away with iOS mail and was hoping this could be the app. Unfortunately, it’s too buggy which makes it unreliable. Couldn’t set up yahoo through manual server settings. Sometimes you can expand your mail account to access subfolders like sent or drafts etc. specific for that account, sometimes you can’t. Most of the time your forced to go through the shared inbox etc. It also seems to change between devices. Mail seems to fetch slower than it should. A big part of email these days is deleting them. I get that there is AI based removal built in but why does the manual common removal take an extra tap then on iOS to begin selecting emails? Why when selecting emails some senders pictures take the place of where the select dot should be? Deleting and selecting email should be as fast and easy as possible..Version: 4.27

No response from developerIt has now been over a week since you asked me to submit a ticket regarding my problem, which I did immediately. You have not provided any answer despite my follow up. Please refund my payment and I will delete the app..Version: 3.22

Potentially great but does not work with icloudContinually will not connect with icloud saying app password needed but the instructions just lead me up the garden path - please fix this pronto as without that if refuses to connect. That your instructions point to settings that do not exist you get an massive fail one star. Happy to change that once you update to instructions that work - no matter whose fault it is. And please loose cloudflare and their ridiculous captures... of course I am concerned about my privacy. If cloudflare cant deal with this ....goodbye. You should have certainly known better. I don't tolerate support systems that do not respect my privacy full stop..Version: 2.02

Please Fix This Bug!First, I would like to congratulate you and your team on producing such fine product. I love how simple and clean this client is. It's lovely to look at and functions, for the most part, very well. I would love to support you, by paying you for your work. However, I have a problem that is niggling me. I have many emails in my inbox (all read), yet only a certain amount of them is shown. When checking me Inbox on my PC, all 500+ emails are showing up. This error has been mentioned by someone else, in another review, by the way. I would find it hard to part with £20, if this issue isn't resolved by the end of my trial (which started today). On a daily basis, I would typically only need to see my most recent emails. However, I would hate to be away from home and find that I need access to an older email, only to find that it is inaccessible because of a bug with your software. Please reply to my review when you've fixed it, so I can test it out and then pay for a license. :) Take care and many thanks!.Version: 3.02

Introducing….A feature that has been around for three months! The release notes isn’t for advertising new features let alone something that was around for updates going back three months. I don’t understand what the favorites slider is for. It should filter your mail to favorites, no? It doesn’t. It opens a row of favorite contact icons? In the latest update, this row comes with an added bonus of covering up a message. Progress ☝🏻 Upon closer examination, there seems to be some filtering of the emails but not consistent with the emails I defined as favorites. It’s just not intuitive. That’s disappointing. I thought this was a bug but after waiting a year for a fix this favorite behavior is apparently a feature..Version: 3.53

Badge counts always wrongThis is an app with lots of useful features. However the badge counts are always wrong and it drives me nuts to the point that I switched back to the free but accurate Mymail app.Version: 3.22

Was great now horribleI've been a fan of this client for about two years. I needed a client that supported dark mode, and this was the only one that did. I was pleased with Canary, the setup was easy, and it worked well. I had no issues. I would recommend this client to multiple people, and I even use it on my Mac. After two years I have seen this client decline at a rapid pace. I no longer get all of my emails, Canary doesn't pull them down, I have to open up another mail client to respond to emails. The client continually crashes if it decides to pull down my emails and the same happens on the mac client. It's awful, and it's like the quality of the client went down the tube in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I'm back to searching for a mail client that supports a dark mode. I work late hours and having a white background is too sensitive on my eyes at 1 AM. It's unfortunate that I had to uninstall this app as it used to be good..Version: 2.18

Fashion over functionWhat looked to be a promising set of apps ended up jumping on the AI bandwagon. I still have a subscription but don’t even use it. Emclient’s free beta is more reliable. Such a shame they went the AI route instead making a reliable privacy focused client. Updates never fix anything, they just try to get you to use AI. An annoying training system gets switched on for all your device, and you have to complete it on each device. Customer support are little help with a “works okay on my side” attitude. Could have been good. RESPONSE TO DEVELOPER I’m not posting my ticket number; I’ve wasted too much time with customer support. Here are some other annoying things about the app though: No option to select dark mode - only auto Aliases appear as “me” so you can’t see which alias it was sent too. Badge count sometimes displays the number of unread emails when there are no new emails..Version: 4.12

Doesn’t LoadClean UI and stuff but the inbox never loads.Version: 3.99

Uninstalled todayWas looking for something with some capabilities missing from Apple Mail, espevially the ability to have multiple invoices from the same domain. Turned out Canary couldn’t do that either, but I kept it just to use something other than the built in app. But the straw that broke the camel’s back is that canary keeps signing out of my account. So every few months it stops getting new email, but I don’t always catch it right away. I notice I’m missing an email that I know should be there. Then I see that the account is offline and I need to sign in again. I don’t see the need for that when I keep the phone locked and in my possession. After the third time, I uninstalled and went back to Apple mail app. I had not touched it for months, but it immediately retrieved all my mail. Is that so hard?.Version: 3.41

Unfinished and unusableThe biggest showstopper is that you can’t set a “from name header” if you use an alias. You’ll be stuck with your full email address as the from name. Support seem to consider this a feature request rather than missing core functionality. Other than that, while it has a clean, polished, and very customisable UI, it just feels a bit glitchy — messages I archived yesterday briefly flashing up in my inbox today; moving the cursor around a message on a touch screen always selecting text rather than just repositioning the cursor; messages sometimes pinning themselves for no reason. I want to like it, because the AI implementation is the best I’ve seen in a mail client, and it’s AI did help me quickly clean out my mailboxes and get to zero inbox for the first time in forever. But it feels like it’s trying to run before it can walk, and not being able to set a from name is a blocker. Sorry, Canary, you only get one chance to make a first impression 🤷🏻‍♀️.Version: 4.29

A Mixed BagOverall, not a bad app. I bought it as I wanted an email client on my iPhone which supports encryption. However, it has quirks. Some emails are not displayed properly, how it manages quoted text is a pain, replies to email don’t seem to support inline replies and the final killer, an email sent at 09:22 didn’t actually leave the app until 13:00 odd. Not the first time this sort of behaviour has been observed. I’ve reverted to Apple’s Mail app..Version: 3.10

So near and yet so farI ALMOST purchased the PREMIUM version towards the end of the free trail as the app is ALMOST there. I love the fact it picks up accounts on multiple devices and the pinning feature to remind me of emails to sort BUT I subscribe to a number of email newsletters and they are ALWAYS ALL truncated with no option to see the whole text. The ‘help’ files tell me there’s a setting, but as these were written 9 months ago they are obviously horribly out of date and that option no longer seems to be available. Long story short is I HAVEN’T found my ideal email client after all and the hunt is back on and I won’t be making that in-app purchase for the premium level!.Version: 3.02

Don’t waste your time!!!Don’t waste your time. The app has a great layout and look. I like a lot of the features. The paid version does not fully work and you can not restore if correctly on MacBook. Push notifications only work if the app it open and not closed. Support team non responsive. This app is not worth the purchase of 30$!!!!.Version: 3.19

You have to Purchase Pro for MacOS and IOS SeperatelyI like this app, though I do find it slow on my computer. I really love how you can select a sender and it will show you all the attachments that person has ever sent you — best mail feature ever, hands down. However, it’s not clear in the demo or anywhere I’ve seen that you have to purchase Pro for MacOS and IOS separately. I feel like I’ve been tricked into to paying twice what was advertised..Version: 3.45

Unacceptable Quality and SupportThere are issues with this app especially if you use PGP everyday. Sometimes the app fails to recognise that you already have the correct private key and password already inserted leading to closing down and opening and at times, it crashes. The support is actually worse. They treat you like crap and brush you off thinking that everything is your fault when it’s clear they have no QC & QA. Will be fighting to get my money back. Avoid if possible..Version: 4.33

NotificationNotification issues, no notifications coming in for inbound emails.Version: 4.33

I really wanted to love itThe app is beautifully designed inside and out, and I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately, lack of certain functionality renders it unusable for me. Firstly, there is no way to sort by sender on the mobile or desktop app. This wasn't a deal-breaker, but it would be useful. More importantly, though, on the mobile app, there is no way to select multiple messages from a list of search results. I was able to do this on the desktop app, but in order to then delete those selected messages, I had to right-click to find the delete option. Strangely, once I deleted those messages, they stubbornly remained in my Canary inbox, even though they had actually been deleted from the server and were gone from my Outlook inbox. Canary doesn't work for me right now, but I hope it will in the future..Version: 3.11

Looks great; frustratingly slow. There’s a lot to love about Canary Mail, and I’d like to keep using it, but it fails at the one thing I need it for—checking my email. Refreshing my Google Apps mail account often takes upwards of 15 seconds, even over a fibre internet connection, and with no background refresh, it makes it impossible to check email quickly..Version: 3.07

ElpresidenteiDunno what you sll do but rather than here can se meet and run my new nikes virtual private nutcrackers with a free subscription to the ground totally covered in dirt to be sure your location isn’t compromised , 6 feet solid depth of no intruders, special now includes 9 inch nodes to place ovsr the box or in my case rhe machine that goes 🛎️.Version: 3.69

Unreliable at best...I've been using Canary as a "Pro" subscriber for a number of years now. I've never been completely happy with it, it just seemed like the best choice as a replacement for Newton when I was forced to find a new client. It's always been glitchy but until recently I've held to the idea that it's still probably the best option for me. However, recently it has stopped loading/displaying entire folders. When attempting to contact support I found myself directed to the knowledge base page with the email support function also not working. At this point I'm just looking for a replacement before I cancel my subscription and stop using Canary all together. Unless you're ok with potentially not seeing and/or not being able to access your email, I'd suggest you skip Canary..Version: 4.15

Email app for Canary’s shareholdersSwitched from Spark hoping this would be an email client that works. Unfortunately Canary fell into same pattern as Spark: introducing new features to please shareholders while disregarding ongoing issues with basic functionality. Insane unnecessary gamification, multitude UIUX that makes no sense. Many features that are not standard to any other email clients are turned on by default which caused me a lot of problems..Version: 4.22

Not for iPhone 5sNice app but crashes often on 5s. Usually while "searching for new messages" after having moved or deleted msgs. I'll keep using it (free version) as I like the GUI. Might go pro if I ever get a new phone..Version: 3.80

Use with Gmail doesn’t support draftsAnd crashed upon attaching a screenshot from my camera roll..Version: 3.65

Background fetchI really enjoy canary - it does what I like. A high quality mail app with privacy in mind. I’m not sure if it’s still the same but it sucked having to pay for both iOS and Mac app, but tbh the key issue I have is the lack of background fetching of mail. I use iCloud mail and with all the settings I’ve enabled it just won’t get mail periodically. So it takes a while for the inbox to get in sync and download new mail, and remove old email I’ve already archived. Nobody enjoys staring at their phone doing something that should’ve been take care of in the background. Hopefully it’s not out of the developers control..Version: 3.36

It has gotten better, but the watch app needs more helpI purchased this app a few years ago for all of my devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac & Watch) to the tune of $60. I was very angry with myself for having done it, especially once I started using it. It was suer-buggy and the sync took forever and worked intermittently, so I uninstalled it and went to something else. I recently revisited the app, and I will give credit where it is due, the app works a lot better now and is actually usable for daily use. One thing remains bad (IMHO): the watch app! Who designs a watch app that has no unified inbox??? I have give accounts, and I have to go to each account on the watch to read new messages?!?!?!? I’m hoping they will add this simple thing, as they’re the ONLY mail app that doesn’t have a unified inbox, and no excuses they provide can make up for such a glaring omission. Until they do this, I’ll stay away, but keep checking in to see if they fix it. Until then, I can’t recommend it; too much competition in this space..Version: 3.63

Completely broken on iOSWhenever I open the app I get the error message telling me to completely reset the app. But the same error happened even after resetting, rendering this app completely unusable..Version: 3.73

Doesn’t workEven emails don’t load.Version: 4.31

DisappointedI bought the pro version after using the free app for a day but should have waited longer. While the app is clean and user friendly, it has a lot of bugs. The notification system erroneously and consistently notifies me of new e-mails but when I enter the app, there are no new e-mails. Also, I have to delete e-mail 2-3 times before they are removed. I find this time consuming and quite irritating. I will be switching to another app..Version: 3.93

Good but not greatThe Mac version works without any issues, but the iOS app leaves a bit to be desired. The text when replying to some emails is so tiny on the iPad I can hardly read it and it can’t be adjusted. I’ve told the developer but still no fix. Also sends a stupid and loud noise when sending email and it can’t be turned off. Lately it also asked me to re-approve gmail accounts on a regular basis..Version: 3.27

Too Many BugsEg snooze an e-mail and you get an alert at then allotted snooze but the message does not appear in the main (unified) inbox. You can only view the message in the specific account inbox or via alert or kill the app and rerun it. If bugs like that get through shows it's not tested anywhere near adequately. So despite having paid for Pro, app deleted and e-mail needs to be reliable and this app isn't..Version: 3.45

Could be a lot better...I am an email power user with multiple email accounts and have tried many paid and free email apps. Web based clients do not provide the functionality I require, namely that I need access to email when NOT ONLINE. This is also where Canary has a serious shortfall as it only “syncs a limited number of emails in order to conserve bandwidth and space”. I have plenty of space available and bandwidth is not an issue when I am able to connect. But location and site security restrictions impede access at times. Tech support cannot answer how I can force a download of my mail. A mail client should be able to access all the mail associated to an account. Another major annoyance is that there is no visual indication that you have replied to a particular email. A lot of clients will show a reply or forwarding arrow to indicate it has been acted on previously. This is not the case with Canary, you need to check your sent mail to confirm and that can be tedious to search through. It is a time consuming annoyance. If you leave the threading of messages on then this is not an issue... but there is a problem with that as well as leaving that on is an issue because Canary cannot seem to keep the local database free of errors and it mixes multiple unrelated threads. You are forced to constantly re-index. There is plenty of room for improvement here..Version: 3.18

Could not set up on iPad ProI perform IT functions for Mac as part of my job, to provide some context. I purchased this software today because the interface for Apple’s Mail for iOS is not that great and I’m looking for alternatives. The software stalled out on an IMAP email account for my musical group’s website. Hmm, I know all of the required information and checked it closely to make sure the entry was correct - not impressive at all. OK, let’s try something dead simple - iCloud. Ouch, it stalled out on that too, referring to the need for two-factor identification but not actually initiating that process the way almost all software that requires this would. So now I have purchased this software but it will not install any email addresses at all and is therefore useless and a financial loss, albeit a small one. I’m sure that with enough time and tinkering I can force this software to set up these email accounts - but the claim is made for ‘effortless’ email and in that regard it is clearly a failure right out of the gate..Version: 2.16

Paid, but...I’m mostly happy with my purchase, but there’s one tedious function missing. I can’t filter emails from a contact, then do a bulk select of them to either trash or move. This is something that I need to do fairly regularly..Version: 3.12

Now I gotta pay ANOTHER $10?I was looking for another email client when Airmail decided to recharge their customer base. I found Canary and ended up buying version 2 only a couple months ago for $10 because they said 3 would be a free upgrade for people who bought prior. Now they come back and basically say well not really. They expect us to pay ANOTHER $10 for the new features... so its not really a free upgrade. Never mind that 3.0 seems like a bit of a downgrade to me. I loved the ability when reading an email to be able to swipe right from anywhere on the screen to get back to the email list. Now you have to stretch your hand all the way to the far left edge of the screen to get this to work. It’s very awkward and not convenient at all. Also, in 2.0 you used to be able to set long swipe to nothing and it would make the short swipe work immediately. Now if you set the long swipes to none, the short swipe will STILL pause with a default menu option along with the short swipe option or, going the other way, the short swipe will only function as a long swipe. I’m also not a fan of the new design either. While 2.0’s UI needed work, it was unique. Now it looks generic, like Apple Mail. Sorry folks but between the NOT free upgrade and the somewhat of a downgrade that 3.0 is, you’ve lost me. Time to move on..Version: 3.0

Good app. Few issuesIn general good app but sometimes it’s buggy - the app may crash and restored to the beginning status(to the status just downloaded from app store, need to re-setup the account or load existing config) - default notification method is PUSH instead of FETCH. If the app crashes like I said above, it will back to PUSH notification. It means the email creds will be stored on their server, not sure temporary or permanent - documents didn’t say - when use cloud-sync setup a new device, the notification method is PUSH by default, even i switched to FETCH in another device I’d like to ask developer to add extra instructions to allow user setup the push/fetch notification when start the setup. Or provide the option that disable push notification permanently for the user(so the user don’t have to worry about types of notification) Also, notification should be synced via cloud-sync The last, canary should specifically document how long they will keep the email creds once user decided not use PUSH function..Version: 3.25

Way to difficult to see sender email addrrssThis email app is nice in some ways however anyone who get scam emails knows you need to be able to see the sender’s email address. Canary hides the sender’s email address behind multiple layers of display text. You can’t see the sender’s email in the main view. If you then click and open the email you still can’t see it until you take another step of clicking on the decorated text Canary chooses to hide the actual email behind. There absolutely needs to be an option to have the sender’s email address displayed from the very beginning as the default. The way it is now is far too insecure. I sent an email to Canary about this many months ago and still the problem exists. I don’t feel like I’m asking for anything too difficult or unreasonable..Version: 4.14

Decent but could be betterI’ve used multiple email apps to organize all of my different email accounts and for one reason or another they just didn’t wow me. I found Canary and purchased the lifetime bundle. While it is a decent app, there are a couple issues that absolutely makes me hate the app. It seems like it is always glitching. My emails do not come through in real time unless i am on the app, it also gives me an error when i try to delete emails, and i always seem to have to go through my actual GMAIL app to see attachments or delete emails. I love the look and the concept of the app, but i just wish it was more streamlined and actually performed better. I hate deleted and reinstalled it several times hoping it would fix the problem, but it hasn’t. Now I’m browsing for another app so i can leave this one alone once and for all..Version: 4.45

CoPilit is a big step backwardsLet us get rid of it - I don’t want this to be forced onto users. Gimmicky and it’s lost you at least one customer. Give us a choice to hide it! We can disable but then I’m the tab is just there, like an Ad/reminder just floating about cluttering up the app. Big no from me..Version: 4.04

Seriously? A subscription?I bought Pro on iOS without it being a subscription, and there you go, you guys thought it was a good idea to impose a subscription to have Pro on both Mac and iOS. That’s very stupid and Pro should merely be required to buy once in order to have it on several devices, you know, like almost every app on the AppStore. No wonder people crack your software..Version: 3.62

Does not work with iwatch! The primary reason I got this was to be able to use with iwatch. And guess what it does not sync or even switch on in iwatch. Even though I have added email accounts on Canary in iphone but nothing updates on iwatch. I almost paid for full version...thank god that it malfunctioned before payment... Stay away....Version: 3.05

Constant issuesConstant issues with emails not sending (showing in sent box, and in iCloud mail inbox), but never sending. Worked for the first email, and it refused to send again. Native iCloud app works, so no issues with iCloud email server. Sent emails also show up in iCloud.com and iPhone mail app when sent with canary, but recipients never get them..Version: 4.17

Too expensive, too cumbersome and lost access to attachmentsIOS desperately needs an email client that can handle pgp encryption. This was promising but version 2 was rather complex and suffered from ‘too many options’. I now lost the ability to access attachments in encrypted emails unless I fork out another $14. I don’t want new features, I just want to be able to view attachments. Shame, the app gave me some hopes first but it is now unworkable..Version: 3.05

UnderwhelmingWhile CoPilot is innovative, the calendar view is disappointing as there’s no way to change views from week to month. This means maintaining a second calendar app..Version: 3.93

BadConstantly has sending errors and fails. Just so bad will need to remove it..Version: 4.30

One Bug Is Driving Me Crazy!I don’t know if this is a bug or a “feature” that I can’t figure out how to turn off. But either way it’s happening with increasing frequency and it’s driving me crazy. My preferred way to view my inbox is with the “all” view - I use multiple accounts and they are color coded, which is fantastic, and allows me to easily keep up. But for the love of everything.... upwards of 80% of the time when I select a new email, it opens, I’ll glance through, etc. When I go to delete the email using the bottom toolbar, it quickly takes me back to the “all” inbox view and then swipes everything to the right and gets frozen on a screen that is blank, save the Canary logo. And it stays frozen until you force quit the app and restart it. This makes it absolutely impossible to quickly get through multiple emails in a hurry. Developers, please........ I don’t know what this is but please fix it. I gladly paid for Canary 3.0 but I’m a hair away from returning to Apple Mail and never looking back..Version: 3.11

Even more costs!!I really want to like this app, however, it is very difficult to recommend this when even after paying for this app, a new update requires me to buy the add on for such an absurd amount, once again! I don’t think it is fair to have to pay that much for basic email features such as email pinning! Very disappointed.Version: 3.02

Has serious potentialHas serious potential, but I’ve found a few bugs that I would love to get help with. If only I could get a response from tech support. I would actually pay for this app, but at this point it’s not worth it :( After posting the above, I received an email requesting my ticket number. However, I have found no way to contact Canary technical staff to receive such a ticket number. If someone from Canary sees this review, I’d be happy to converse offline to improve the product and process. Thanks in advance..Version: 4.28

Was great, but then became unreliableI’ve been using Canary on all my devices -iPad, iPhone, MBP- and it was pretty great for a while, and while it’s had some quirks -for example, auto-select behavior is different between all the devices (and I prefer the iPad’s behavior where it’ll only add items as I scroll down, and will not re-select items I de-selected), and magic keyboard support on iPad disappears if you visit a link (and have to close and reopen the app to get it back)- it was still a decent e-mail client. However at some point in the last few weeks, it’s become unreliable. It takes too long to load emails (especially on my iPhone 12 Pro) to where I’ll wait almost a whole minute between clicking on a notification and the email finally loading. On top of that, I’ve noticed that it doesn’t always archive or delete emails: they’ll disappear from my email list on Canary, but upon closing/reopening the app (something I have to do to get keyboard support back on the iPad) a lot of the emails are back, and there doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason. I hope these issues get fixed, because mass-deletion of e-mails is what truly sets this app apart..Version: 3.34

Too much AI while basic email doesn’t workI was initially excited about finding Canary and paid for the lifetime fee (separate for iPhone and Mac). However, the more I used it, the more bugs and UI issues became apparent. Frequently, it silently fails at retrieving emails. There’s no progress indicator to show that it’s trying to load emails from the server, so it looks like it’s done. However, sometimes ill close the app and come back later and find that there are many emails from hours before the last time I checked that weren’t shown. They made me suspicious, so I tried another email client and found that Canary flat out was not loading some emails and I was missing important messages. Canary is also extremely slow. Oftentimes when I would tap on a message to view it, there would just be a white screen, or would only part of the the rest of it cut off and inaccessible. 30 seconds to load for each one. There are lots of little annoyances like this. There are also loads of bugs. For example, I kept deleting emails, but they kept flashing and coming back. The AI features are neat, but Canary is not a competent and reliable email client for sending and receiving emails, so I switched to Spark..Version: 4.45

Hopeless. Can’t even forward an emailI’m trying to forward an email to wife. “Please keep app open to send” I do, I see the footer saying “sending” click here to abort…. Yet still won’t go through. Restarted my phone, force closed app, all the usual tricks. Have been trialing this app for a week but time to give the flick Same issue has occurred twice in a week.Version: 4.40

Tons of features - but…I want to love this app especially because I paid for the pro version and it’s a secure service, however, my mail notifications come in and then open the app and the emails aren’t there… sometimes for up to 15minutes.Version: 3.89

No effective features to deal with spamNo effective features to deal with spam.Version: 3.84

Once great and reliable. Rubbish.Months ago, when it worked, it was great. Fantastic. Reliable, fast, nice UI, no clutter. For too long now, each sparse update introduces new bugs, and the worst counter productive one: unreliable. Mail takes a long time to receive, erased inboxes don't actually erase and you have to keep moving emails back into trash, refreshing the inbox manually to receive mail and sync because background push etc is entirely useless. A rubbish app. Moving to Spark..Version: 3.36

Don't purchase this app for PGPKey management is way too buggy. Secret subkeys disappear every time after the app is killed by system or manually. Expirations of keys are sometimes incorrect, either. And there's no way to manage subkeys in the app. To make matters worse, the app sometimes fails to decrypt emails (loading icon eternally) and one has to kill the app and re-import the keys..Version: 2.18

DisappointingThat kind of sums up the experience so far. It all sounded great in the sales pitch but the reality is an unreliable product that’s buggy with poor support. There are some pretty basic issues with the version I’m using. For example, sending an email often fails. One has to force close the app and reopen it before the email will send. Email sync between two devices is a bit flakey. Moving messages to folders in gmail is flakey. Deleting emails is unreliable too. These are pretty basic functions that you just expect to work when purchasing an email client. For a £10 purchase price I do expect better support from the developers. I have tried to get a refund but cant so I guess I’m stuck with it. I’ve spent the money so expect something in return. Hopefully the stability and functionality issues will be resolved in future versions..Version: 1.17
