LEGO® Powered Up for Negative User Reviews

Controls won’t workAt first the app was working really well, but then some problems started appearing, firstly, some of the controls just stopped working, (specifically the speed, the slower parts were the non working ones) I tried the battery on the train, I tried un-installing and re-installing the app, the list goes on. Secondly, you can rename the power piece of your vehicle, the only problem is it won’t let you rename the power price of your vehicle, you’ll delete the name and it will glitch right back on. Very frustrating indeed. And even if you write the name before it glitches, it’ll just glitch on top of it. All of it is just very infuriating, the only reason I’m keeping this app is I need it to power my train..Version: 3.1.1

To confused🐥Make it less confusing for me I’ve just been pressing random buttons and my stars will be five.Version: 3.6.1

Used to work…My piano worked for a bit and it was amazing! I have a iPhone SE I have the latest update and I get a blank screen now so it will not play music the Bluetooth connects fine. Interestingly my brother has a 13 Pro and it works on his I think you haven’t coded correctly for the screen size..Version: 3.6.1

Functional but…Loses blue tooth connection randomly and frequently. Using with Lego City Passenger Express. As long as it’s connected, it’s a delight. Sound effects, speed control, lights all great. The random loss of blue tooth is quite frustrating. 3 stars because of it. If this didn’t happen I’m sure it would be 5..Version: 4.0.3

Please fix Grand Piano iOS!App looks great, but the iOS version has an issue related to the Grand Piano set and doesn’t work. Lego has confirmed to me that this is a software issue and that it’s known to them, but still the most recent update to this app is nine months ago and the problem remains unfixed. Please fix, Lego!!.Version: 3.6.1

No workingI will clarify this review as the app does work and the phone (iP 11 PM) does talk to the Lego hub via Bluetooth but when I press the controls train does not move. Disappointed because the guy at the store just sold it to me and didn’t mention about earlier iPhone compatibility. Hopefully for support with newer phones..Version: 3.6.1

This app is great, but is missing some thingsI find the custom controller creator very nice, and it works quite well. The only problem with it is that we can’t change the background colour, so it stays as a plain white background. Maybe we could import custom images for background? I also found that the block coding can be hard to decipher, because there is no in app help to tell you what block does what, so I had to use an external website. Users should have the ability to upload custom sounds to be played by a custom sound block. Apart from these issues, the app is great because it is free and allows users to create custom controls and scripts for their lego builds, and use already made presets to control their creations. I hope that you take some of my suggestions into consideration :).Version: 3.6.0

App no longer worksPiano app does not work. Connects to Bluetooth but then does not load either Play or Listen sheet music function. It used to work several months ago on the same phone, so I’m not sure what happened. I’m using an iPhone SE 2nd gen..Version: 3.6.1

Not working on iPadI have the app on my iPhone and iPad. I wanted to have the piano play thru the iPad while I manually worked the roller coaster functions to have some background music. So I bring up the piano on the app and when I click the listen side instead of getting the music choices all I get is a gray screen! I feel I have been wasting my money on the power up motors and hubs. Can we get an app that works.Version: 3.6.1

For the grand piano the sheets don’t show upI have tried numerous attempts and done multiple things followed YouTube videos and tutorials but on the app the grand piano section does not have sheet music to play the piano which is sad to see please fix it I just want to play it.Version: 3.6.1

Could be betterNot difficult to set up but could do with some instructions especially how to set up multiple trains. The sound options are nice but should be tied to the trains performance and on a loop. So the faster your train goes the quicker and louder should the train sound.Version: 2.0.0

App is completely and totally inaccessible to those who are blindAlthough Apple has gone to great lengths to make iOS accessible to those who are blind via its voiceover program, this app completely bypasses all of those features and cannot be used in anyway by someone who is blind. This is especially a shame since the grand piano from Lego is often given as a gift to those who are blind musicians..Version: 3.9.0

About grand pianoCould you let the piano to be able to play music continuously? It always stop after finishing playing each piece of music for once, and I have to tap my phone to let it start again..Version: 3.5.0

New update is terribleLego has gone backwards in functionality with this app. This new update now has missing functions and terrible user interface. Why is the math function completely missing when configuring in create mode??! No idea what is going on here but it is sad to say the least that this app gets no attention..Version: 4.0.3

Can U make a seperate section for bricksIT IS SOOOOOOO difficult to find bricks to me so make seprperate section for bricks!!!!!!!!!!! 🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱🧱.Version: 2.1.1

Breaks train permanentlyDon’t download app it makes the passenger train really slow and have almost no battery life please fix my train LEGO or I will need a refund..Version: 3.0.0

Controls too smallIt’s a great app and works well, but it would be better if the controls weren’t tiny little buttons in the centre of the screen, why can’t they fill the whole screen?.Version: 3.6.1

Not working! Train does not respond :-(Lego Train 60197 is connected with the app, as the top left connection icon turns GREEN. However, if i tap on “+” or “-“, the train just does not move. If I select the Batman device inside the app, I am able to control the train using the Up, Down buttons for the Blue controller or the Slider up down for the Red controller inside the Batman app. This confirms the App is connected correctly with the Phone and the App. It is the App for train controls which is not functioning. Wrote an email to support, but got a very unhelpful suggestion! After sending all the details of my phone, app version installed, and the specifics above, AND MENTIONING THAT THE TRAIN WORKS W/ THE REMOTE, CONTROL THAT CAME W/ THE TRAIN And the ONLY ISSUE IS THE APP, the support staff just gave me a generic copy and paste tutorial on how to setup the hub with the remote control that came with the train. ?!? Never got any reply from them again :-(.Version: 2.0.0

Just kills connectionRuined a weekend of Lego, trying to build robots and the hubs just keep crashing and disconnecting rather annoyed with the hundred spent.Version: 3.6.0

No sound on iPhone XWorking excellent for speed control with more speed steps than supplied Lego controller. Sound doesn’t seem to work at all on iPhone X. Really great to see Lego using Bluetooth in the City Trains now!.Version: 1.1.1

OkNot the best it should be connected to the actual Lego trains and other stuff otherwise it is not very special..Version: 4.0.3

AwfulTerrible app, do not get. It doesn’t work!.Version: 3.1.1

Battery ProblemsThis app kills my phone battery like crazy. I’ve lost 30% after about five minutes of use..Version: 3.6.1

The cam shaft doesn’t rotate in correct way for grand pianoTwo separate grand piano sets have been built with the same problem. We’ve rechecked the Lego build numerous times and it is correct per the instructions. But the camshaft turns the wrong way and stops after one rotation. If someone has had the same issue and figured out how to correct it we’d appreciate knowing it.Version: 3.6.1

Does not work with iOS14Worked fine with Grand Piano until iOS14. Now will not connect to Powered Up Hub..Version: 3.4.0

No way to exit the appSo I downloaded this app onto my iPhone X. Connected via Bluetooth to the new LEGO Batmobile and everything works fine. EXCEPT when I’m done with the app and want to exit the app, I can’t! Swiping up on my phone to go back to home screen or to show all open apps doesn’t work. The app simply does not allow you to. Only way to close the app is to power off the iPhone via the volume down button and the main button on the opposite side and then swiping the phone off. EXTREMELY ANNOYING. Going to return the batmobile if there is no immediate fix. What a horrible experience after spending well over two hours to put something together that totally locks up your phone..Version: 2.0.0

The App Always CrashesThe app crashes every time I tap on the City Train controllers. The Batman controller works, but neither of the trains do. Would be nice if there’s was a part of the app where you could get in touch with LEGO technicians to troubleshoot issues..Version: 2.2.0

Missing ContentFrom your device check page “ The LEGO® BOOST Star Wars™ app is now only available to download as part of the LEGO Powered Up app” Buy that’s not the case, I cannot find content from the original LEGO BOOST Star Wars app. Which means my set is now missing lots of fun it was supposed to have. Can Lego make sure the content is not removed when they are retiring/replacing an app? I’ll be worried getting another sets that works with an APP in the future..Version: 4.0.3

App isn’t workingI recently bought the Lego Passenger Train and downloaded the app. Waited for it to connect to train and the app didn’t work. Any help?.Version: 3.0.0

Back to zero does not workThe back to zero function does not work anymore , is there a work around for this ? Also my older projects had many different controls and now the screen is so zoomed in I can’t use them and there’s no way to zoom out , when will these issues be resolved ?.Version: 3.8.0

Excessive Battery Usage and HeatingThe app itself works flawlessly, 5/5 stars. The unnecessary battery drain though makes it tough to use, not to mention my device gets noticeably warmer when the app is being used when compared to other apps..Version: 3.8.0

Good but needs some tweaksThe app is good but there needs to be a loop option for sounds like train track sound and the bell. Add an option to have the sounds constant if the user wishes. The track sound and bell is pointless without being able to let the sound keep going on loop..Version: 1.0

Needs plug & playAll I want to do is plug my motors to a hub, and control my MOC with a joystick or speed control, just like I used to be able to do with power functions. There’s supposed to be a customisable option but, the dials are tiny, don’t work, and have no labelling for me to know what’s going on. I have resorted to using a 3rd party app to be able to control my models. Can you please bring out some manual remotes exactly like the power functions ones. How am I supposed to take videos/photos while operating?.Version: 3.6.1

Missing BOOSTCame to this via the Lego Star Wars BOOST app, which is reaching EOL this fall, much to my dismay, and we were directed to this app as the replacement…. This is a much more hastily thrown together app than that one was, and I’m disappointed that where Warner Bros IP is available in this app, none of the Star Wars content is here. I hope they port the programming elements from that app over to this one if they intend for us to use that hardware here, so that we can still have all the droid sounds and reactions, along with programming elements that were already designed for a move hub in these configurations. Moreover, I’m skeptical about investing any more into this for the kids if they’re not able to commit to supporting the software in the long the run. IOS apps take yearly maintenance, and it doesn’t seem like LEGO is committed to the effort. So I need to wait to see how long this one last, or I need some kind of statement from LEGO about their long term plans with this platform..Version: 3.8.0

Missing picesAt step 3 already missing 2 pices. Really ordinary for a toy of this price..Version: 3.6.1

Doesn’t work on all trainsIt doesn’t work for my train 60051.Version: 2.3.3

Worked well but now uselessAs other have said on the iPhone this always worked . Then suddenly the screen image is so small you can’t use it. Works fine on an iPad but not on an iPhone ES . Tried reinstalling but still the same.Version: 3.6.1

Very Very DisappointedI have spent over $1000 on Lego technic sets and 1000s of hours building, finally though after much play, adjusting, and learning with the machines I bought, they started to break down. I heard I could customize it program what I wanted,(from a YT channel with over 200k subscribers) very excited at this proclamation, I got started and dismantled my Leibherr R 9800, I already spent hours make a simple truck using on motor to steer and one to drive, instead of programming I just used the same template for the “Off road buggy” worked fine, but I then decided to make a more powerful machine with to XL motor inputs for much more power only problem is that when you have gears opposite of each other they spin counter of one another, thinking I could just change that in the programming I was dismayed to realize there is no ‘math’ section in the coding whether it’s my phone, my model of motors, or software I cannot for the life of me do something that should be simple. Respectively it’s not Legos fault, it may be but more than not it’s something on my end, I can still build and use these motors, it’s just within a certain guideline. -YThenord #NordWasHere.Version: 4.0.3

Poorly thought outI don’t know how to use the coding. could you please make a tutorial option in game settings. I am not experienced in coding please make this app easier to use. Thank you.Version: 3.0.0

Only 1 hub at a timeI read that you could connect 2 hubs to the iPad app and so build more complex things. But it doesn’t work. You can only connect 1 hub at a time to app. This is a HUGE constraint. I bought a second hub for nothing..Version: 2.4.0

Great product, shame about the (nonexistent) documentationI’m using PU Lego, as the best and most cost-efficient way of running and controlling scientific experiments at the University of Edinburgh, aiming at technology to better cure cancer and improve post-surgical wound healing. The Lego technology is perfect, but I am being hindered dramatically by the total lack of documentation or meaningful support. Why develop such an exquisite product and fail to write a manual? Just bizarre..Version: 4.0.3

No sound ( what’s the point )ISO 12.0 and there is no sound being produced by the app. ( yes my volume is turned up ).Version: 1.1.1

The worst thing everI got the lego piano after bag three when I needed to test it so I downloaded this app I connected every thing but when I clicked listen there was no music so I reloaded it Did not work I restarted me phone did not work I have clicked every button on the listen page but still I could not play it this is why it is THE WORST THING EVER..Version: 3.6.1

No instructionsLike many other reviewers, I am rating this app low because of the lack of instructions. Another very important feature is missing: please prevent the phone from auto locking when this app is in use. I’m trying to run a long program but after a minute everything stops because the phone screen auto locked!.Version: 2.4.0

Not working properly on iPad ProOlder versions used to work fine on iPad but since more recent updates have been released the controls for the yellow and green trains only show in a tiny view with no way to zoom in - making the controls almost impossible to press on. Have deleted the app and reinstalled many times but still have the same problem.Version: 3.6.1

ConfusingI’ve wasted over 30 minutes trying to get the controllers to work from coding it. There should be either a very descriptive walk-through or the coding blocks more detailed. Everything is to confusing..Version: 3.6.1

No programming helpProgramming blocks were added in April 2019, but as of October 2019, there is no documentation of any kind on how to use them, either in the app, or anywhere on the internet. Lego customer support is sympathetic, but has no information. The blocks are similar to the Boost programming environment, but some are different, and programming the slider controls is brand new. The app itself seems to work fine for me for directly controlling trains or the Batmobile. It just when I want to try programming that I get lost..Version: 2.3.3

Arrggghh!!!This has been a fun app that my son and I have been using with his train. Unfortunately it seems to have stopped working! Is there any chance of an update please?.Version: 3.6.1

FrankDoesn’t connect to the train. When you check on google lots of other people have the same issue. Looks like a real hassle to sort it out. It shouldn’t have to be so hard to play with a toy. Not sure or it’s the app or the LEGO but a frustrating experience.Version: 4.0.3

Doesn’t work on iPadI tried on iPhone and it is actually work but when I pair it on iPad it’s giving me a blank screen.Version: 3.6.1

Doesn’t work for pianoIOS 15.3.1. App loaded, Bluetooth connected fine. Piano interface offers “Play” and “Listen” options. Selecting either moves the motor, but doesn’t load the interface. Just a black/dark grey background. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled, rebooted the device, re-paired the Bluetooth. Everything brings me back to the same blank interfaces..Version: 3.6.1

BugsCan’t open the app after iOS updated to the latest.Version: 3.6.1

Crashes on iPad 4, iOS 10Selecting any set crashes the app continuously on my son’s iPad 4 (running iOS 10). Please fix as this renders the app unusable..Version: 2.3.0

Worst app everI got the passenger train for Christmas i was delighted and happy even decided to get the app it worked well until one time I tried to get on it worked FOR about a second and then went off instantly it’s ridiculous how much it cost me for that passenger train I checked the batteries they were perfect but why does it keep doing this do something about it and update You best answer developer of why is this happening.Version: 2.0.0

Getting better for custom set-ups, but not greatI have a train MOC with the PUP hub, train motor and color sensor. Without instructions, it’s very difficult to “trial-and-error” my way through the places/color plates where I want the train to stop, wait X seconds, reverse, etc. Also would be great to save a program sequence from the app to the remote controller. Doubt it’s possible unless there’s a memory module, but it would make it easier to turn on and “run”. A desktop app would be even better..Version: 3.0.0

Breaks the train permanentlyDo not use this app with your train... Ever. This train set was great with the remote but adding this app rewrites the firmware on the train. From this point on the train is really slow and gets stuck even on the highest speed setting and even with the old remote. Batteries barely last a few minutes of driving now too. This train set worked well before the app changed everything now it will have to go back for a refund because it no longer functions and is a source of endless tears for the kids..Version: 2.0.2

The Promises you made last yearNone of the promises for the app have come out yet and we are in JUNE! Come on Lego, at least add the LCC style!.Version: 3.11.0

Needs documentationMost of the app works great now (it used to be really finicky), but figuring out how to use it is really challenging. Most block coding environments have either a basic description of what each block does, or words on the blocks, but the LEGO powered up app provides no such descriptions. It seems that LEGO has backed themselves up into a corner by trying to making the app understandable by kids as well as attempting to achieve the full functionality of the Powered Up system. Adding a text programming mode (with Python or some other simple language) that unlocks the full functionality and contains thorough documentation while reducing the complexity of the block programming is the path that LEGO should take. (I am aware that the new Mindstorms system will be programmable in Python, I am hoping that that will be compatible with the rest of Powered Up).Version: 3.3.0

Please enable to play through Bluetooth speakerI have the grand piano. The app seems basic, but I suppose does the job, although the music shown on app doesn’t appear to match what is playing/ the Lego sheet music that comes with the model. I had the idea of buying a very small speaker to leave in the grand piano so the sound could appear to come from the piano but even though the speaker is connected and plays from music app, when I switch to Lego app it only plays from the iPad speakers, would be fantastic if you could let the app play through Bluetooth speakers/headphones. I really appreciate that it is one app for multiple products, the number of apps needed nowadays is ridiculous..Version: 4.0.3

DisappointingUnfortunately the app doesnt work at all for my Grand Piano, and support have told me it wont be fixed for at least a month… such an anticlimax after building the set!.Version: 3.6.1

Some bugs found. When I press play, the motor makes noise and it’s annoying. Please find a way to prevent this motor noise and a way to save batteries because they’re being drained by the noise. Also, when I try to do shuffle whilst a song is playing, it doesn’t work. Please fix those bugs because I am really mad at you 😡..Version: 3.6.0

Needs work. The app is cool but the train is too dependent on the app. Having to have the app open at all times while using the train is extremely limiting. Some people just want the train to run for an hour and relax and watch it. I understand wanting to save battery but Lego needs to address this either by having an override on the actual motor or something in the app..Version: 3.6.0

Doesn’t work at allIt’s connected Grand Piano nothings displayed when I tap either listen or play. How can I play or listen?.Version: 3.6.1

It Broke!I downloaded the app to try and connect my phone to the battery but I have no idea what happened. Neither the remote or phone works and if I try hold down to power button on my passenger train battery it just glows blue and orange! This was a complete waste of money to but the product as it stands and I would really like to know if you can help fix this issue. However, this is only my review and I’m seeing a lot of 5 stars. I will surely delete this review and replace it with a 5 star if you can help me fix this issue. PLEASE HELP! Sincerely, Anonymous.Version: 3.6.0

No support for new iPhonesInstalled this to use with the Lego Grand Piano. It wouldn’t work because my phone is newer than an iPhone 7. Very disappointing, will be complaining to Lego. Puts a damper on a £300 purchase, Lego should be ashamed..Version: 3.6.1

A few problems...First of all when my phone turns off the train also stops which isn’t convenient if I want the Disney train on for a longboard time. Secondly, if I exit the app not only does the train stop but when I re-enter and I start the train the button that I press to make it go forward clicks however I cannot press any button after that and the screen freezes. The train doesn’t stop and I have to force close the app. Not happy..Version: 2.3.0

Wouldn’t workI got the green Lego city train for Christmas so I got the app so I could control it from my IPad connected but wouldn’t work worst app ever never downloading again.Version: 4.0.3

Should be betterPlease add a fix so that the app runs in the background, and you can access the camera on the phone to shoot video while the train continues to move. Thanks.Version: 3.0.0

Add moreI love the app honestly but... I wish you would also add the old fashion passenger train. Because some people don’t want to buy the new ones. So hopefully you take my advice and use it..Version: 3.0.0

Lack of any documentation makes this unusableThe total lack of documentation for the last four years makes this unusable, the latest update has changed all the icons so any prior experience is rendered useless..Version: 4.0.3

😡When I first started everything was easy then it was updated and everything was hard and confusing.Version: 4.0.3

Great app but…Had this app on my Samsun Galaxy and it was great for powering my daughters train. Just got a new iPhone and downloaded the app to find the controls are shrunk to an area smaller than two inches and are unplayable as a result. There is no resize feature so the app is unusable until the developer fixes the sizing issue. It’s a shame to spend hundreds on a cargo train and not have working sounds..Version: 3.6.1

Nothing but problemsBought a hub for the Haunted house, couldn’t get it to work, so Lego had me return that hub and they would send me another one. Well having similar problems. Sometime the lights will come on the hub, starting with the purple flashing light, before I’ve even pushed the green button, just started after installing the batteries. After the first hub didn’t work I decided to try an older hub, had no problems getting it to work on the haunted house. I’ve tried uninstalling the program, re-installing the program, both on my phone and iPad. I’ve followed all the instructions given to me, when I had problems with the last hub. I’m at a loss of what to try next. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED!!!!!.Version: 3.9.0

Piano key alignment is even worse now!The reset of the keys on the grand piano was always not that great from the beginning. After the update it’s even worse. What happened!? It used to hit the stopper and then slightly rotate back and the keys would be mostly aligned. Now it hits the stop and and motor does not rotate slightly back leaving the keys totally unaligned! Please fix this.Version: 3.6.0

Bluetooth connection does not work. As usualWhen attempted installing on ipad, the app requests a permission to use bluetooth, but does nothing after pressing “Further” - literally NOTHING happens. Therefore, it is unusable..Version: 3.2.0

Piano portion doesn’t appear to work on new phones.Grand Piano kit portion of app doesn’t work on 2nd Gen SE (tried two different ones) but works with 1st Gen SE… all running the latest iOS. Looking on Lego’s site for compatibility, the latest phone listed is the iPhone 7. Really??!! Update 3 months later: Lego acknowledged the problem but still no update. If you’re considering buying a PoweredUp set, you might think twice unless you’re sure your device will work. I know I won’t be buying any..Version: 3.6.1

WHY FOES IT NOT WORK!!!Ok so I tried connecting my Lego train but it WONT CONECT I HAVE BLUETOOTH ON SO WHATS THE PROBLEM.Version: 3.8.0

Instructions. Now on update 3.1 and instructions still very poor. Having to rely on other AFOLs to create Code. Such a shame as i feel it’s got a lot of creative potential and think Lego will lose support for the App..Version: 3.1.0

Mauvaise applicationJ’ai essayé de créer un robot et de programmer mais ça marche pas et les blocs ne sont pas clairs et ne marchent pas et il n’y a aucune instruction sur le fonctionnement.Version: 4.0.3

Ver 2.2.0Loaded latest version and the city portion does not open and closes the app.Runing latest ios on ipad mini 2..Version: 2.2.0

Train stops when app closesThe train stops moving when the app is closed or my phone locks. This is frustrating because I cannot have the train running and do anything else on your phone. Apps works well other than that..Version: 2.3.3

Fix the multi-hub connection featureWhen I connect 2 hubs to the app, the hubs no longer have the ability to measure the position encoder on the motors. With 1 hub connected, the motor position encoders work fine. Can you fix this?.Version: 3.6.0

It doesn’t workI downloaded it on a Apple iPad i’ve tried to make it work but it just won’t it does connect though I would rate it 0 stars if I could.Version: 3.10.0

App doesn’t run in backgroundDisappointing that you can’t let this run in the background. Sometimes you may want to allow a train set to just run its loops for a display. This simply does not allow it. If the app backgrounds for any reason it disconnects and stops..Version: 3.2.0

All motor optionsI don’t really play with the other lego technic motors, I need the large motor for a train but aside from that one I use the powered up train motor and that motor isn’t available in the coding area of the app. Also I’m not the most adept person with coding anything, but I think I speak for a lot of people when I say tutorials would be handy.Version: 3.6.0

Stops audio playback unnecessarily.Hey, devs, marketing et al, here’s an idea. Remove the function, that stops audio playback when using this app. I get it that your app likes to make sounds, but for some that would like to enjoy listening to music while using your app, would be nice. Same goes with your CONTROL+ app. Otherwise, give us the ability to disable in-app sounds that may inhibit audio playback from other apps. While this might sound like a trivial request, I get it that this might not get put on your backlog. Otherwise, please point me to the right direction to create a feature request..Version: 3.6.1

Cannot video while using app! Please add back the option to allow switching away from powered up app without the train stopping. This ability was present several versions back which allowed the very passionate old-AFO to video the train while controlling the train on the iPhone. You took this ability away and never gave it back. Believe me I test this every day when I walk past my now joyless trains because you took the ability to video, away. Why did you do this? Why? A rating of 1 because you are mean!.Version: 2.4.0
