Hyper Light Drifter for Negative User Reviews

So much potentialI will mostly echo what others have said about the touch controls. Obviously the game looks and sounds fantastic. Its also moderately fun despite the difficulties. The story element visuals when you talk to people are lacking though. I have played a few other games on iOS with similar touch controls (Dandarra, Wild Rift, and Oceanhorn) but none have been so frustrating. Aiming is almost not worth it, but I could live with that. What bothers me most is the chain dash upgrade ability. It works about 1 out of every 8 tries, which makes it unreliable. About 1/5 of the upgrade gears are unattainable without this ability..Version: 1.1.6

Let down by controlsTouch screen controls really let this game down for me (I’ve yet to play an arcade/action game where I didn’t feel this to be the case so your mileage may vary...). I often find myself dashing rather that slashing or that my character has disappeared under my left thumb at a crucial moment. That said, having played for a short while I definitely intend to get this for the Switch (at several times the price) the controls for which offer greater precision..Version: 1.0.2

Hard to playI really hate giving this game a low rating because the graphics and sound are outstanding. The problem is with the touch controls. I understand this to be a challenging game but, even on the easiest difficulty setting, the combat is not very intuitive. There seems to be a significant delay in attempting to dodge and strike enemies. At least my attempts in doing so are never successful and it kills the experience for me. It’s not that I need to “get good”. I have been playing video games for many years. I enjoy a lot of games on various platforms. The touch controls for combatting/avoiding multiple enemies/traps simply do not work. Sad..Version: 1.0.2

Great game, but...Loving this game so far, graphics, story telling all top notch, however the controls are either not responsive/laggy or just impossible to get it 100%each time, especially those special moves that require you to hit two buttons at once. Tapping both buttons with a thumb doesn’t work, must use individual fingers, then you get the issue with holding the mobile device. Needs a bit more work on that..Version: 1.0.2

Didn’t think through the controls for mobile devicesGreat game but unfortunately I can’t give it a better rating because the controls for shooting your blaster weren’t thought out enough for them to be fully functional. For example if you try shooting an enemy, you can only fire in the direction the character is moving and can’t really aim if u need to move to the left and shoot straight. I wish I could give it a better rating but unfortunately for me until this gets fixed I’m afraid it’s a one star rating especially because it’s a paid game. You’d think you wouldn’t have to deal with this type of problem if your paying for something..Version: 1.1.7

Amazing graphic, terrible hand feelingI’ve been playing this game for about 3 hours so maybe the hand-feeling could change on later game, but it has already driven me crazy- the character we control can do some fast blink like Rock Man Zero which is pretty cool, but when he walks or stop drifting you can feel that he moves too lagged, like walking on the glue or muddy ground, and control him through dragging thumb on flat screen makes it worse... many times I don’t even know whether he’s following my lead or not ~ hope this can be adjusted..Version: 1.0.2

No keyboard/other control supportI know that this is a great game, but there is no controller/keyboard support to play on the Macbook yet it is on the appstore for Macbook....Version: 1.1.7

Cool game but needs better controlsIm only giving it three stars because of two main issues, no ability to customize controls, and I have no idea what this game is supposed to be about. Its very clear this game was made for controllers in mind because the on screen controls are cumbersome and not suited to achieving the various attack combinations necessary. The response in controls is slow and often I can't move my character fast enough to avoid attacks or complete an attack combination. Also the healing button is in a poor spot and its very difficult to heal while in battle. This game needs the ability to rearrange controls and change their size. The other issue is that I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Theres lots of switches to hit and stuff shows up on screen that I activated something, but theres nothing that tells me what I just did. Talking to characters bring up images with no dialogue, which as a stylistic choice is interesting but with how little information you get through the rest of the game little of it makes any sense..Version: 1.0.3

I paid for this? What am I missing? What do all the 5 Star reviewers find so wonderful about this 2 dimensional bore fest. I wandered around for 30 to 45 minutes waiting for it to impress me... nothing! Hoping for a refund..Version: 1.1.1

Horrible game, designed to die even on easy modeCant even change the joysticks settings to move to where my thumbs are for easier gameplay. the fighting & combat is trash, my player dies always gets surrounded even when im dashing. the double dash doesnt even work when you need it to. the timing to too sensitive, would be better of my player could get out of traps & the designed platforms without dying using the double dash. none of that 👆🏽👆🏽 is coordinated with each other properly. - designed to die what else? cant even heal myself when i need to in battle, i tap the heal button & my character dies because hes SURROUNDED & GET FOLLOWED BY THE ENEMIES WHO ATTACK TOO RAPIDLY. the button needs to work fast or be in a position where the player doesnt have to move their thumbs as much. its a heal button guys, come on now. -designed to die you have to aim with the gun??? when the player is already under attack? the player cant move while aiming????? most shots dont even register - designed to die refund me please.Version: 1.1.4

???Lets not use any words and explain nothing to new players, don’t worry they’ll understand the game eventually?? Also no controller support, REFUND PLEASE.Version: 1.1.7

Waste of moneyUnclear direction, short lived action sequences, vague story line. Best thing it has going for it, is it’s graphics. Had potential, but falls short in many ways leaving much more to be desired. Money could’ve been spent better elsewhere.Version: 1.1.6

It doesn’t run well on my iPadI have the standard “iPad” range of iPad (A1893) which is relatively up to date. Sadly this game runs poorly whenever there’s more than 2-3 enemies on screen, which is often. Everything slows and the game lags. A shame because the combat is designed to be reactive and needs to run smoothly to work well..Version: 1.1.6

I really want to enjoy this! This game is right up my street, great pixel art, awesome music, tight gameplay. The touchscreen controls just aren’t up to the job. Using the gun during combat just doesn’t work. You aim the gun with the movement stick so dodging and firing can’t be done at the same time. How about a mini stick on the gun icon? I’m really hoping the controls get a much needed update, it’s the only thing holding this great looking game back..Version: 1.0.2

Dreadful controlsAlmost impossible to navigate any of the traps and obstacles using the iPhone screen. Hasn’t ported well from keyboard and mouse with no adaptation for a different control mechanism. Disappointing as there’s a fun game in there somewhere..Version: 1.0.2

Seriously? After the first half hour with this game, I watched an obscure intro video with no text, then got thrown into a world to explore and collect stuff for unknown reasons not knowing what this stuff is or does. Within this world are stores and shops where it appears you can upgrade stuff like your sword and gun, but there are no labels or costs that I can tell. So we go back out to the world to keep walking around and killing stuff that approaches you. I guess it’s kinda like a classic Zelda game in some sense except less charming and no explanations or text. Graphics and controls with my external controller are good. Just a really weird game. Maybe I’ll give it another try later on now knowing what to expect from it..Version: 1.1.7

Challenging, but not in a good wayAfter looking forward to play this game for years, I was so disappointed by the touchscreen controls that I have to give this one star. The game doesn’t give you any information about how to proceed, which meant that several times I got stuck with low health - mostly from the poor controls during fights - and had to restart, losing all my progress. cash for power ups is finite, and health packs are also limited. This might be more fitting for the feel of the world, but when you’ve got a 50/50 chance of hitting jump instead of attack, it’s unfair. The ‘immersive’ world is merely hinted at and you don’t really get a chance to explore it, just fight through different levels. A lot of the backstory is told via a code you are supposed to work out… but you could just go on a wiki site and read the entries. Finally the warping back to the home level is poorly explained and actually not much help when you do figure it out. I’m so disappointed by this game I wish I’d just stuck to reading the wiki entries. It takes less time and I don’t accidentally end up jumping into my enemies..Version: 1.0.2

Frame rate issuesI’m actually having framerate problems on an iPad Pro 2018. It’s very inconsistent and the speed of the game is changing constantly. Hopefully there’ll be a fix for this..Version: 1.0.1

Too flat-Loved the combat. - Hated the Puzzles because of the flatness of everything - Too hard to tell what's a wall and what's the floor - 3D perspective would have done wonders for people like me..Version: 1.1.4

Controls are a deal breaker for meI hate to give this kind of review. Because I know a lot of work went into this. But as of right now, this game is unplayable because touch isn’t precise or responsive enough to execute the maneuvers for boss battles to advance in the game. I want to love this game on iOS. But how can I when it’s more aggravating than enjoyable? Balancing mechanisms are needed, such as brief period of immunity while healing, so it’s not interrupted when reaching my thumb all the way across the screen corner to corner while a million attacks are coming. Can’t tell you how annoying that is to die over and over because it was not more thoughtfully adapted for touch screen. Also occasionally unresponsive buttons and no tactile response (again it’s just glass no buttons), makes for plenty of errors in heat of the moment. Everything else is great, and I’m going to try to play on my Mac with a plug in controller so I can enjoy the thing how it’s meant. But take it from me this game on iOS will let you down..Version: 1.0.2

Broken 120fpsThe app is supposed to support 120fps on iPad Pro but runs more like 30fps with constant stutter and lag, needs to be fixed to be playable!.Version: 1.0.2

A missed opportunity for a beautiful control schemeHyper Light Drifter is an amazing game. It sits among my absolute favourite games of all time, and for all the dozens and dizens of hours I've spent, Ive thought it would do great on the Nintendo DS. using dpad to move and stylus to dash and slash wouldve been incredible. When this game was ported to mobile I was ecstatic to see what they did with the controls. I was met with the console controls ported feebily into a generic ios game ui with the same unsatisfying buttons every console to mobile port is plagued by. With a little more ambition this port could have been something incredible. Hyper Light Drifter feels made for touch controls in some ways, and this port unfortunately fails to capture on any of them. Its a 10/10 game but this port is the absolute bare minimum..Version: 1.0.2

Great game. This games is great. One of my best games so far. Pros: great graphics, great game play and all that Cons: if u can add the option in the next update to have fixed joystick that would be great. Also if possible to optimise the game for the iPad mini 6, just with it not filling all the screen that’s all. Over all the game looks amazing and the games play is great keep up with the good work. If anyone is reading this, I would recommend this game to anyone..Version: 1.1.6

Love the concept but the controls are very frustrating. This is a case of games that don’t translate well to mobile. Controls are just too hard for an iPhone XS Max even, the buttons are tiny and they all look the same. I’m an avid gamer on pc, switch,Xbox etc. I’ve beat several rpgs on iPhone and all of them had better controls than this game. I’ll keep playing it but it’s very frustrating to lose an easy battle early on because it’s impossible to not fat finger little buttons. The game is awesome but buy it on any other platform but mobile..Version: 1.0.2

Surprisingly clunkyFor the cost, and with all the praise you would expect smooth controls, but many of the combat and platforming challenges are more luck than skill because the controls are just not up to the challenge of the game. it’s also one of those games where you need to do very specific tasks but there is no text anywhere so you’re on your own to figure out what and how to do..Version: 1.1.7

Its stupidIts a wast of money.Version: 1.1.7

Needs improvement, has immense potentialI wish the developers didn't make this game so difficult on mobile. You lose health for every wrong step, which is way too easy to make on such a fast paced game. It would be a 5 star game if you didn't lose health for mis-stepping into water or off a cliff, you start off with very little health and in the middle of an intense battle you must tap a corner button to utilize a health pack, which rarely works in time. Would also be beneficial to have an easier map. I've been playing for hours and I have zero clue where to go next. Lastly, it shouldn't require such a huge amount of randomly found collectibles in order to upgrade my character, you can wander aimlessly forever just to discover 1/4 of a key or upgrade peice which is too monotonous. All in all I like the game, can't play it on mobile though..Version: 1.0.2
