✓ Well worth the priceI am coming back to Backgammon after many years, and this app does everything I need. Great for learning and practice, and excellent for online play. The Analysis in-app extra purchase is worth having too, eventually, if you want to go over past games (something I have done for chess but never bothered with BG, yet anyway). ✓ It's worth the painThis backgammon app will take you from being a mediocre player to being a surprisingly good one if you can stand the pain. The pain is from getting beat by the computer again and again. I found a few strategies that helped. I turned off the sound at first. I varied the levels and turned on the hint button. ✓ AddictingLOVE this App. It is extremely fast. the only thing that I do not like is that the dice rolls do not seem arbitrary. Too many times when a seemingly impossible dice combination is needed for the computer to get, it gets that impossible combination. On the other hand when I need a seemingly easy roll for example a 1, 2,or 3 to get off the bar, it could take 5 attempts. I only wish that each roll was random. That being said, I purchased a very new backgammon app, and HATE it because it is painfully slow. ✓ Best BG on App StoreHands-down the number one backgammon app. Unless Snowie, GNU or Jellyfish release their app, you’re not going to find a stronger game to help you improve. Disregard all of the people leaving comments about the computer cheating. Those people truly don’t understand the randomness of dice. Years ago when I first purchased, I was in that same boat. However, more than once I have turned on manual rolls and rolled my own dice and you know what? Crazy things also happen. Just this morning I played with Manuel dice and rolled four double sixes in a row. Had this happened on the random generator in the game, most people would’ve thought the game is terrible and on and on. To avoid future trashing of this app from all of those people, do what I did. Roll your own dice and see what happens. I guarantee you’ll always hit some crazy rolls or the computer will have what appears to be the perfect rolls. Guess what though? It happens. Play it long enough and roll your own dice and you will see all of these crazy things you people complain about time and time again..Version: 6.3.9
✓ Honest Cheating (if there is such a thing)This app is probably the best backgammon app in the store. It allows the user to use manual dice and enter the scores to drive game play. This function ensures that the computer cannot be accused if cheating. In expert mode with manual dice rolls I win about 85% if the time. However, when using the game with automatic dice roll and in expert mode the game is very difficult to beat maybe I win 25% of the time. I suspect that while there may be no intentional cheating the neural net which drives the AI's play has been over-fitted to the dice roll algorithm and is thus able to anticipate likely dice roll outcomes. Additional information 2 years later: I have now passed 500,000 dice rolls and wanted to add to my previous comments. This game definitely has a deliberate skew in favor of the AI when in expert mode and automatic dice roll. The statistics provide data assuring the user that no cheating is occurring since the percentage of rolls, scores and frequencies matches what would be expected with "perfect" dice. While this may be true it obfuscates the fact that the AI gets double 6 or indeed any other score when it is most useful for it my game play invariably gets the score least useful at a given play. This is particularly the case when attempting to get back in off the bar. Most (70%) of my double sixes occur when I am in the bar and the only unavailable position is 6! Just this last game trying to move a piece where a six was required I threw 22 times without throwing a six. I have played games where I have moved once and the AI has played on to a winning position without my making a single other move. I have played backgammon for 40 years at all levels including regularly beating a player who matched Omar Sharrif for skills and I have never seen dice fall as they fall for this AI. This AI behavior may improve your game if you are willing to be VERY frustrated but it is not a true reflection of real world game play and should not be touted as such. In the interests of fairness I would suggest that the game be modified to allow a move to be withdrawn after it has been played so that game becomes a true learning experience. This would allow a poor move to be remade in light of the AI's dice roll..Version: 6.0.3
✓ AceI've played BGNG on my phone for years. It is a beautiful game, with smooth play and a satisfying BG experience. The analysis function (a paid upgrade) is brilliant, and gives the ability to properly improve my game. Online bg works really well, with deep customisation options that allow players to create their preferred kind of play, and specify what kind of opponents are to be faced. The game cheats?! Haha! Don't play this game on Expert difficulty, unless you like to play opponents that NEVER make a wrong move. ✓ Does not cheatThis app does not cheat but if you feel (incorrectly) it does you have the option of rolling your own real world dice and entering the results. Try it. I did and initially still lost badly. By watching what moves the app made I have improved my game to the point where I can now beat it 50% of the time..Version: 5.2.1

✓ Great teacher, fun opponent.I kill a lot of time with this app. For fun and for improving my game. It's standard of play is well above that of most players so many of us can benefit from its hints whilst playing. Since using it my FIBS rating has improved quite a lot as it has taught me to be less conservative. For those of you who really want to complain about the dice not being random. ✓ Great app, improves my gameOkay, I really like this app (cannot say I LOVE any app, LOL). Still cannot figure out how the computer constantly gets back on the board quickly with perfect rolls (when I only have 2 open spots) so much more often than when I roll. Understandably, the computer moves well and covers the board better, but it still seems to almost ALWAYS get back on within 2 rolls unless I have the entire board covered. But, as far as cheating is concerned, I don’t think it looks ahead at future rolls, but the manual rolls are suspiciously “perfect.” Either way, I still enjoy the game and have gotten better quickly. After a few weeks, I’m taking best of 7 matches consistently against medium unless I do something dumb in the first 4 rolls. I’ll move to hard and expert soon. In the analysis portion, I would like to see mirrored dice rolls as an option to replay entire games and see how different moves would change an outcome. That could help folks get much better. ✓ Easily provable that it doesn't cheat, please read.This is by far and away the best backgammon game in the App Store and now with match analysis (through a very reasonably priced iap) competes with computer packages such as snowie. Anyone who thinks it cheats should try setting the dice rolls to manual so that you actually have to physically roll a pair of dice and input the moves yourself. This way the computer opponent can't possibly know the rolls in advance. I have been doing this for around a thousand games and the win lose stats have not changed from when it was a computer generated roll. Backgammon is a very hard game to master, my Elo rating is 1857 which is not too bad, but when I play a human opponent with an Elo above 2000 they consistently wipe the floor with me. ✓ Almost perfect backgammon appI LOVE backgammon NJ in single player mode. It has all kinds of features, a pretty strong AI, and lots of ability to analyze your matches and improve your game. However in two player (real-time) mode sometimes it crashes and aborts the match. This is incredibly frustrating, especially if I’m playing to a lot of points. I’m on an 11 Pro, so this really shouldn’t be a problem. I feel like there’s a little more debugging work to be done before I could 100% recommend this app..Version: 6.3.9

✓ Developer please explainI've been playing for years. Like this app and find the hard level very challenging. Please explain this. I have screenshots of the computer resigning EVEN though it's still possible for the computer to win. Now my programming is very old but surely it's easier to program a resignation only when it's not possible to win, UNLESS the computer knows it cannot win. ✓ Big time crasher. Is it just me?I’ve owned and played this game for years. Over the past year it crashes incessantly while playing. Doesn’t matter whether playing against computer or playing an online opponent. The game just crashes and game is over. If playing the computer, sometimes, frequently, it remembers where it left off. More often than not, it reverts to a a state in the game much further back from where it crashed. When it crashes in online play, there is no way to get that game back and I would assume that ELO is lost as a result. Dev, can you figure this one out? Happens on both iPhone and iPad. ✓ Chuckle chuckleI love this app and have been playing it for years. The chuckle part is to read the reviews of people claiming that "the computer will roll just the correct number when it needs it". Chuckle chuckle lol! Jimmy Hu the author goes to great lengths to prove that it is impossible for the app to cheat. The thing is, the app allows you to look at the next 100 rolls that will be used in the current game. So if you wish you can write them down and then YOU can become the cheat. Logic tells me that the computer cannot possibly determine what moves the player will make 20 or 30 rolls from now. If it could it can adjust its random rolls? Ridiculous thought. I trust that we will see more embarrassing reviews that bring out the shallowness of the reviewers that are absolutely "experts" in backgammon analysis. This will add to the entertainment. I play at expert level to improve my game and with the hints provided I am slowly getting better. But I still lose 55-60% of my games with hints switched off. So I have a long way to go. I know that the app does not cheat, therefore that emotion is taken out of the picture and I can objectively assess my incorrect moves. Well done to Jimmy. The app deserves 5 stars from everyone. ✓ Best Backgammon Game So FarI am constantly on the lookout for the best backgammon game ever. This is almost perfect. Backgammon NJ HD is designed to be realistic both in board designs as well as options for play. I enjoy both the pip count and percentage chance of winning/losing to see what the computer thinks is the right moves to make at the time. While I don’t necessarily agree with its recommendations if you use the hint option, it does challenge me to think of additional options. The doubling option does make you think carefully about what moves are in play and allows you too end a potentially disastrous game. There are two issues with this game. First, after thousands of games played, I do believe that the dice rolls are slightly favoring the computer. Secondly, when allowing for the automatic bearing off, it will make mistakes only on your side and not on the computer’s side. Finally, I would definitely say that this is the best game out there that I have found, it’s also a great training tool for beginners, and I probably play 10 games a day because it is fun and fast..Version: 6.3.9

✓ Great for trainingI love backgammon and have been playing for a few years now. It can be hard to find people to play at times and find people with same or greater skill to challenge myself, so I play online or against bots. A problem I have with other apps is that as I play my skill increases the bots do not, so with other apps I know when the bots have made critical errors and I can the exploit it. This app gives you a good incremental challenge. Even the "easiest" posed a challenge when I first starry using this app. The hint button gives some good tips and you can use this as training "why is this a better move?" ✓ Challenging enough to remain interesting.I'm not sure why people think this game is "rigged"... i don't. Sometimes the dice are not in my favor .. well ... craps! Other times, they are in my favor. The doubling cube has a good AI and makes choices that make sense to me. The only game I ever played that was more challenging is one called "Jellyfish". Which is ANCIENT, but man.. was that AI SMART! So many BG games are not challenging enough. I think THOSE are the ones that are rigged to make you feel good about yourself, or they just don't have good decision engines. This one has better range than most. ✓ Continued reviewGot cut off. So what if you could easily replay the game with the just concluded seed? Try your skills down a different path with the same rolls? I also think the game play could be better. I don’t like that undo only undos the current move. You should be able to undo back to the beginning of the game. Also undo should undo one dice move at a time, not all the way back to the beginning of your turn. I also don’t like the way you have to tap on the dice to move the lower dices roll first. The developers claim it doesn’t cheat because it gives you the ability to see all the pre-determined, random dice rolls, which you can. Just check the dice rolls and write them down. Then watch as a the game alters the dice rolls depending on the situation. The higher the skill level, the more the dice rolls will change. ✓ MehI play backgammon a lot. This is an interesting app, some decent statistical assessments are available. But, the dice rolls are a little difficult to take. I'm not sure if the dice are loaded, that would take some programming skill that's more likely than not beyond the author, but the frequency of the computer getting just the "right or perfect" roll is hard to believe. I'll play it now and then; it is very aggressive in its play, which is an interesting twist but only a psychotic human backgammon player would actually take some of the chances this app does. Here's the thing, it's easier to build an app that can beat you at Backgammon fairly than it is to build an app that that can choose when to throw a double for itself or select the right moment to alter your roll. ✓ Cheating? I thought yes, but I'm convinced - No Cheating Here.I am convinced that there is no cheating in the rolls. It is uncanny how often a "perfect" roll comes up for the AI, but it seems that way also in real life. I have recently counted the AI's great rolls vs mine - and its almost even!! The 3 doubles to win when I figure I should have been gammoned were really sweet!! I find the AI is strong. Originally, I thought that some game positions seemed to confuse it and it mades or recommended poor moves. What I now realize is that was actually me making mistakes. I have used the tutoring available from the game and analyzed situations where the AI disagrees with my move. The AI is invariably right, although there are still some instances where I disagree with it, I am now assuming that the problem is me, not the AI. Earlier I commented that the first rolls were not coming up for me - during 40 games, it was 30 for AI and 10 for me. I kept on logging them and it really is fair. Those 40 games look like they were a statistcal outlyer - possible but rarely happens. My other 160 games so far are split 80/80 for first rolls. I am thoroughly enjoying the game. It has been a long time since I played at competitive levels, and I am rusty! Playing this is getting me back into shape, and I am also learning that I was never as good as I thought in the first place!.Version: 0

✓ Excellent AI, no cheatingPeople seem to whine about the AI cheating, but honestly, they simply ignore the statistics. Confirmation bias prevents them from recognizing that good rolls happen on both sides. I’ve played hundreds of matches against the AI and I’ve been incredibly lucky about as often as the AI has. That said, the AI is really strong. The moves it makes are almost always the best choice (in my opinion). For fun, play a game where you move and before committing, ask for a hint and compare what you chose to what is suggested. Then you’ll see just how smart the AI truly is. Anyway, this is by far the best backgammon on available on the App store..Version: 5.0.3
✓ Relatively accurateThe levels are all or nothing. Easy is too easy and hard is too hard. It would be more realistic if the proportion of hard rolls were intermittent but increasingly prevalent as the levels got harder. Similarly the fortuitous rolls could be intermittent with the majority of rolls random. Maybe that's what the designers were aiming for but the hard levels are so persistently punishing that it's not worth attempting them. I am a very reasonable when I lose but those hard levels are ridiculous. I love playing on this app but there needs to be a smaller step above medium level..Version: 6.0.3
✓ 10+ years of playingI play against the computer in expert mode, and the thing is pure evil. However, if you can’t stand in the heat, go play a kiddy game. This particular game makes you an expert player. It toughen you up and it teaches you how to win. The best I’ve ever done is 100% against the computer and the last game I just played a few minutes ago was 98.3%, so the computer is beatable, about 50% of the time if you “got game”. If you don’t have any game, the thing will eat you alive. If you want to be good enough to play in a tournament and win, well, this is the game that will get you there..Version: 6.3.9

Only "XG Mobile Backgammon" seems to have stronger AI. Turn-based PvP network play is there and works, but use of GameCenter is awkward. Since most users don’t use this, developer isn’t doing much to improve PvP. DailyGammon on web has been better option for me. Cheating accusations against strong backgammon programs are widespread. ✓ Surprisingly good but not the place to find skilled competitionThe reality is very few people are truly good at backgammon, so it appears computers cheat or dice aren't fair. No, you just need to improve. No app is good as XG for learning the game, but after playing this a while I've found there to be many useful features, clean interface, strong AI, and fair rolls. Trust me, play against a world champion and you will think they have rigged dice too. I've played against enough people on this app to confirm that there are a lot of weak players on here, the main downside of this app. And people play short matches, which misses out on much of the richness of backgammon. I would like a way to manually input an email address to send match files to, instead of having to use the Mail app. Analyze mode doesn't give enough info on cube decisions - is it No double because it's not good enough, or too good? ✓ Please fix crashes!!! Recently crashes every game!!!!!!I love this game! It's, by far, the best BG App I've found anywhere. It has improved my skills tremendously. I strongly recommend you upgrade as all of the additional bells and whistles will help you improve your game. I would give it five stars except for the fact that it crashes on the iPad Air 2. I don't mind the crashes when I'm playing the computer. But when playing a live opponent it can be a little bit embarrassing as it looks like you I'm bailing (if I am losing). I sent them an email – and their customer service is very good. The guy got back to me right away. However after following all of his instructions, crashes still happen. ✓ Fix the computer playerThe computer player is a cheat. It will put you on the bar and not let you off by denying you what you need for 30 rolls. On the other hand it will always get on in one or two. It will give you doubles when you can't use them, but when it rolls them it almost always needs them to put itself in a winning position. ✓ Good, but serious issues.Fully featured. For serious players. I have a few gripes which I hope can be addressed. Current version is very unstable. Crashes randomly. When playing online, it takes too long to detect terminations. Sometimes keeps you waiting a minute or more. I should be able to abort in this period without it counting against me. Part of the problem if the way the app shows all the stats while the opponent is waiting for a rematch. Wait till we're done to show them! I can't find any way to view my own abort % in the app. I have to ask people. I think I can only see my ELO after a game. There should be the option to use the Jacoby rule in match play. Someone who hasn't doubled doesn't deserve two points. It would be good if you could finish, or auto finish, games after you or the computer resigns. ✓ Why the AI wins!! What you need to know!Let's get right to it. While the dice rolls against the AI are randomly generated, it is not "fair" because the AI can now "look ahead" and make moves based on what it already knows you are going to roll! That's why some reviewers are upset because the computer leaves blots and openings but you can never land on them because it looks ahead! Sadly, this is not the "best" learning tool because the AI will leave blots or make seemingly bad moves since it already knows what's going to happen. If you copy down the randomly generated rolls and then replay the game manually your winning percentage will increase. So...why four stars? Because YOU can look ahead too and make it a bit fairer. It's also a pretty good AI when you play in manual mode but it does "cheat" so deduct one star. It's lots of fun if you don't take it too seriously!.Version: 6.0.3

✓ Great gameVery advanced, as proved by the regular ridiculous claims that the dice are fixed. Playing using the tutor mode in advanced setting is a great way of improving your game. I make my move before clicking the hint button, but revert to my original move afterwards. My win percentage on a 5 point match is around 35, and I don't think I'm a bad player. More fun to play real people online though - not least cos I win more than 1 in 3 matches. Good feature is showing the abort and completion rate of the player you're about to play. ✓ Good and not-so-goodI have played thousands of games of backgammon on this app. There’s no advertising (good) and for the most part, the games are challenging and fun. The bad is that the app gives itself perfect rolls repeatedly, so expect to lose frequently. ✓ Cheats - Here’s how to prove itI consider myself to be a very good backgammon player. Made a lot of beer money in college in the early 80's playing gammon for 25 cents a point. Anybody who says this app doesn't cheat is smoking crack. I proved the cheating to myself and you can do the same. I played 10 games on the expert mode with the computer generated dice rolls. I lost EVERY game. Then I changed the option to manual dice rolls, still on expert mode. When I manually rolled the dice and forced the computer to play those random rolls, I won 7/10 games. Unfortunately, manual dice rolling is very tedious, but — it's the only way to ensure that the computer plays fair. The manual dice rolling option is the only reason why I would recommend this app. FYI - I’ve downloaded many other backgammon apps and they ALL cheat. The AI in this app, like in every other app I’ve played appears to be the same for all modes. The only difference between beginner and expert modes is the amount of timely doubles and perfect rolls generated by the computer. Where this app can help improve your play is by learning to strategically use the doubling cube and recognizing pip count advantages. ✓ Best iOS BG app I’ve found!I’m not in any way an accomplished player, but I’m fascinated with the game and this app is the best Player vs AI I’ve found on the iOs platform. I’ve seen the accusations from other reviewers about the AI cheating by looking ahead at the previously generated roll values and adjusting its strategy accordingly. I don’t believe this for two reasons: 1) I’m a novice-level player with poor math skills who’s also hampered by deficient strategic thinking. And yet, through repeated play, I’ve improved and consistently beaten the AI enough to advance to a higher difficulty level. And 2) why would a developer hope to successfully launch an app by deliberately designing it to cheat the player? Especially in this case where there’s no further play-based profit to be made beyond the initial purchase, so why would there even be an incentive to do so? It makes far more sense to go to every length to ensure an unbiased game environment, which is what I believe this developer did. I don’t get to play on a real board against other people very often, so I love playing and practicing on this app!.Version: 6.1.1
✓ Game cheats if dice in auto rollI read the comment by AirPrint Shmairprint (from 3 yrs ago), who tested his skill using manual rolling, and he did great, whereas in expert mode he lost every game. That gave me an idea. I was doing well, just playing against the computer, until I opted for Auto Roll dice, then I was losing 6/7 games or worse, and I’m no beginner. So I changed back to not auto rolling the dice, and first new game I got backgammon, proving auto rolling dice was the problem. The reason I was willing to pay for this game, the Pro version, was the developer’s insistence that dice rolls weren’t biased; but with Auto Roll, opponent got more doubles when most needed, especially when bearing off. Of course, statistics show doubles average to be about same for both sides, but timing is critical. So DO NOT USE AUTO ROLL and you should really enjoy this game! Clearly the developer didn’t test every possible scenario or he would have fixed the Greedy Component Syndrome. Unfortunately, last update was 2 years ago so doubt he will even read this comment. I’ve no comment about playing online, as I’ve not tried it yet. But for me, this game is a keeper..Version: 6.3.9
✓ READ MEStill the best on and offline backgammon for iPhone (and pretty much any other device for that matter!). Interface is tried and tested over many years and the AI is so good that people who can't play say it cheats and people who can play have proved it doesn't. Just Google it there are a bunch of people who have run this through every test you can and it just plays well. Please don't post dumb reviews saying how great a player you are and that the AI is rigged. If you do then you just shame yourself. Just read a whole bunch of post-truth reviews with statements like: “the truth is” and “obviously” followed by the usual boo-hoo rant about the computer cheats. It does not. It is easily provable that it doesn’t. ✓ First-rate backgammon app that does NOT cheat - Here's how I knowWhen playing at the Expert level, Backgammon NJ will often play in a way that's unintuitive and looks too risky for the average player. Subsequently it will look like it got "lucky" and suddenly controls key positions on the board! After looking at those types of play, I started studying classics on backgammon such as Magriel and began to understand many of the issues associated with probability, board control and bold play. My own game is improving tremendously with this app. It plays great, has a wonderful interface and is incredibly priced, especially if you compare it with Snowie and the likes. The teaching mechanism is superb: you can define different levels af mistake at which the hint button glows; if you feel like it just press the button and see the recommended move. If you doubt that it plays fair, do what I did: play 30 matches rolling your own dice, and see for yourself if Backgammon NJ does not keep defeating you at the same ratio it did before! ✓ Still doubtfulIt’s easy to play, it’s very well put together and I’ve read all the reviews that say it’s not fixed, and I believe them, mostly. And yet. It throws too many double sixes for itself. It throws too many good dice for itself to catch you every time you leave a blot. It has, to some degree, changed the way I play the game because you KNOW it’s going to get you, so you resist that risky, potentially game winning move because you KNOW what will happen. I play in ‘HARD’ mode and I can beat it, sometimes quite easily, but there’s that nagging doubt that no amount of quoting stats will take away.
