I started with the free version, but when my score plateaued I figured that there must be a way to get a higher score and I was right in guessing that the paid version would give you higher scores. You can also pretty much buy your way to winning by buying pearls. I like the scoreloop feature to compare high scores, although I frustratingly haven't been able to upload my latest score.
