✓ Not ReliableOne needs to make sure that the photo taken is highly saturated with light, not really adequate for ease of everyday use. English works well, but non-Latin languages leave a lot to be desired (namely Cyrillic and Japanese)..Version: 1.0
✓ No good at JapaneseThis app is great at grabbing the text but cannot handle translation into Japanese. Doesn't recognise the fact that Japanese is written right to left and up and down. Can't even translate a simple hiragana sentence even when it's written in normal sentence form. Don't buy this App if you want Japanese translations. ✓ It’s nice but overkill for some usersIt’s pretty disappointing that if you want to use it as a simple text to speech app and just use it as a translator occasionally... you can’t. It will never just read the text in it’s original language. It will give you an error message that it must be translated into another language. I got this because I already read a lot and wanted to give myself a break. But alas, it won’t read English to English, etc..Version: 6.13.18

✓ Doesn’t work well to recognize chineseI’ve tried many times, many angles to make sure that it wasn’t because of me, the way I took the picture... yet, 7 characters out of 20 are wrong when transposed in a text. So this app is ok for students who has plenty of time to loose... personally I’ll call for the help of a humans to help me out with my chinese text. The technology in itself is very interesting so I guess I spent my money on the future....Version: 6.3.5
✓ OCR not fit for purposeOCR functionality in this app produces so many errors, even with the easiest, cleanest text, that it is completely useless - I would have to spend so much time correcting the mistakes that I might as well type it in manually. The contrast with some other, much simpler apps (e.g. Handwriting to Text Recognizer, which also recognises printed text, almost flawlessly) is stark. (And yes, I have set it to the correct language - it didn’t seem to make any use of it.).Version: 6.13.14

✓ Blown away by the good reviews!Horrible. Tried several trials with and without graphics in the background, and either didn't even detect the language, in which it didn't even try to attempt OCR. Or on the rare occasion would try but would totally foul up the sentences and words. Best stick to the free Google Translate app which works brilliant in comparison to this one with real time video translate, or pictures that have already been taken in your Photos app as well. It easily picks up Cyrillic and other languages. ABBY just gouges. Good luck to the developer. Perhaps use some of the better open source OCR software available and add useful features that other apps don't already have..Version: 6.13.14

✓ Review Request PopupThe app has, three times now, shown a popup requesting I submit a review, when I am in the middle of using the share extension. ✓ Inferior to OCR built into photos, spamwareBaffled by the positive reviews here. The OCR in Text Grabber is barely adequate, and changes to the privacy policy are suspicious. First, just take a photo with your phone on iOS 16 and tap the icon bottom left to capture OCR text more reliably than this app. Second, this would still be an okay app as an alternative to iOS native OCR… if it weren’t so privacy invasive. The app doesn’t need it to run, but will beg for your email, permission to send data to third party advertising partners, permission to access all photos (which also provides the geolocation history of every photo you took). ✓ Who knows what the rent actually is?I had a very simple thing to scan but not even translate and it worked great. There was a little glitch with the letter "u" (which nowhere spells the word "you" unless you want your [please, don't grunt "ur"]writing to appear to be regressing toward primitive humanity) but that's common with photo to text apps. I have no idea what the rent actually is … I don't know why developers think we enjoy being screwed by them and not even being clear what it will cost..Version: 6.13.18

✓ Poor functionality, too expensiveI regularly need info fed from a non-English language app I rely on, and my best option for reading the regular and important notifications that are in Dutch is to screen grab and OCR, then translate. But this app does a really, really bad job of the translation. Plus no attempt at anything like the original layout, just the “translation” dumped into an unformatted, single paragraph of text. Plus the app was hopeless at detecting the original text’s language and got it wrong first try. Finally this app is not free, you have to pay a monthly subscription, there is no other option. There are better apps available that work better and only have a one-off fee..Version: 6.9

✓ Too expensive and incredibly annoyingI was using its picture to text function to type out my script for a drama project. It doesn’t recognise apostrophes and occasionally letters get merged together. And we’d changed the names in the play so I had to manually go in and change everything. I’d just finished after twenty minutes of editing everything making sure it was all perfect, when I tried to click select all to copy it, but every time I tapped the screen, it would pop up an ad covering it all, asking me to buy premium. So it got rid of the pop up option to select all, and copy, so I couldn’t get the project out of the app. Incredibly frustrating, and I could get it out without having to pay so I have to start all over again. ✓ Barely even worksEvery time I scanned a pic, the app would keep on saying stuff like “Unknown Language.” I tried at least 10 times, and all 10 of them failed! Though, I like your attempt, and that’s why it’s not 1 star. I changed my brightness and everything, and it would still not work! I tried both ways, and none of them actually worked.
