Bon Appetit for Negative User Reviews

Can’t link subscriptionThere aren’t 3 dots in the upper right corner!! Pls pls figure out how to let people link their subscription. I beg.Version: 5.8

Can't download issueI subscribed 10 months ago and was able to download the all the issues until the January issue. The issue won't download. Very disappointing..Version: 3.6

Some recipes can't be viewedThis is the first magazine I tried on my iPad. It is really nicely designed overall and pretty intuitive. Beautiful photography. As others have mentioned, when I tap the red recipe "button," sometimes it displays and then quickly recedes again. I found that after trying a few times or accessing through the index, I could get it to display. Very annoying, so I hope that gets fixed. I'm not sure I would pay a full $20 annual subscription knowing that this bug is in there. It's a food magazine-recipe functionality should be high priority to get right..Version: 4.2

Conde Nast DOESN'T get apps!I have subscribed to Bon Appetit for 20 years and was excited for free access to what I've paid for. When I try to login, first I use my account number or my address. Then when I try to load the full access items, I am told to login again! But when I login, it tells me that this account has successfully logged in and that I should try logging in with another method, which is not found. This app is living up to Gourmet Live, which is complete junk (and I deleted). I have the Saveur and Food & Wine apps and know how to get through a login. They only require 1 login, which seems sensible to me. Conde Nast ruined Gourmet's rep with Gourmet Live and I hope they don't ruin Bon Appetit's..Version: 3.2

Why no PDF version? It used to be that you could choose either pdf (so like the print version) or the terrible format where you have to scroll up and down pages. Also the layout of the magazine gets worse all the time - bad 1960s and 70s..Version: 5.8

Used to be able to read without internet connection, now crashesThis magazine now crashes and the user is unable to open an issue without being online. That never was the case before with this magazine. Issues used to be accessible without wifi after downloading. The inability to read offline makes it pretty much useless -- especially if you plan to read the magazine while traveling. Most magazines do not require the reader to be online to read the magazine after it is downloaded. What a bad feature!!.Version: 3.6

Update made app pointlessI’ve loved the Bon Appétit iPad app for years and preferred it to print issues (I’ve been subscribed for about 4 years and seen the app experience get better and better over time, with fun swipeable layouts for articles, animation, modules you could toggle to make photos easier to view, etc.) The new update gets rid of all the best features about the app and makes it the same as reading the print issue. In particular, the recipe index and separate section for recipes was very important and made it much easier to cook from directly. In the new version of the app, the recipe text is as small as the print issue (actually smaller because I have an iPad mini) and very inconvenient to actually read. I’m so disappointed I’m considering canceling my subscription—it would be easier and more legible to just pull up the recipes on the website than try to read them off the app. I don’t understand why they would go backward like this unless they fired their whole app team..Version: 5.0

Really slapdash, not worth paying forIf Conde Naste expects people to pay good money for their digital content, they need to do better than this. It has not been updated for larger iPads (which have been out since 2015!!!), and everything is a blurry mess. The magazine itself is great, but save your money for a company that is actually functioning in the 21st century..Version: 4.7.5

DisappointingTakes forever to download; I walked away for 10 minutes and it was still downloading after I got back. Also incredibly difficult to navigate around. I was trying to find a previous issue, and I tapped, tapped, tapped around the screen trying to find a library of previous issues. I finally found it, but I can't tell you how I did it. Other magazines, Time, SI, etc., you tap once on the bottom of the screen and the library pops up. Hope improvements are coming..Version: 3.6

Can’t Keep Monthly Magazine CopiesYou subscribe, but can only temporarily keep copies of the monthly magazines. Indeed, you have to download each copy every time you launch the app. And once your subscription runs out, you lose access to those monthly magazines for ever. The content isn’t unique anymore-the internet is loaded with similar information, though Bon Appetit does aggregate it. And Bon Appetit cannot shake its Manhattan biases; it’s tiring to read about another Brooklyn “hot spot” every month. Move out of New York BA!.Version: 5.0

App is awfulThe Bon Appetite app is pretty awful . I hope it gets sorted out, still haven't received my first print copy So I hoped the app would be useful in the interm. Nope!.Version: 3.6

Very buggy, with potentialPros: content sometimes well laid out, some good ideas for organization Cons: Each version I've had has been buggy and unpredictable. It's also not very intuitive, which they seem to understand, evidenced by the copious "first time user" type instructions that pop up periodically, even after more than a year of use. I want to use it, because it could be a great app…but it's a really unproductive way for me to access this content..Version: 4.2

ConfusingI've come to realize that having a cookbook on my iPad doesn't really work for me unless one can search for recipes easily and then put them on the screen sans advertising, etc. and in a manner designed for easiest referral WHILE COOKING. I have no idea how or whether or not the bon appetit magazine app does this, but I want to UNsubscribe and I have no idea now how to do it. IT should be easier. Maybe I'm just too old now to easily learn new things, be able to navigate through another new app, but mostly...how do you unsubscribe???.Version: 4.2

It’s not alive, it’s dead.I’m just trying to watch brad leone pickle things and this stupid app won’t let me. Bad. Leone..Version: 4.7.5

Infuriating appI never rate apps because no one needs to hear from me, this one has finally pushed me over the edge. Ever since this moved to a subscription-based model it has been nothing but glitchy. The content is great, but only if you can access it before the app crashes on you. I use several subscription-based apps and have never seen anything malfunction like this app. Don’t waste your money..Version: 5.8

Please change it back!I used to love the Bon Appetit app - the interactivity, the recipe index, the ease of finding and reading the recipes, the creativity and design... why would you ruin a good thing! I loved being able to open an old issue, jump straight to the recipe index and pull up a new recipe that I’ve been meaning to try. Now I have to scroll through the entire magazine, skip past an ad on every other page, and hope I find the recipe I’m thinking of. Re-hire your app team please! I loved it the way it was!.Version: 5.0

A Giant Step BackwardThe latest update turned a great app into a useless one. It was easy to navigate and easy to use. No more. The best feature, a single page with all the recipes, is gone. It’s now just a scan of the print issue. I canceled my subscription to Food and Wine when they did this with their app and really hope I don’t have to cancel this one. I love Bon Appétit and hope they’ll listen to the users and push another update that brings back the features that made it so good..Version: 5.0

Bon Appetit iPad appDon't bother downloading. It is impossible to sign on. I guess if you like picking locks then maybe this is for you. I am just going to be happy with my print subscription. It is too bad, I use Food & Wine app all the time..Version: 3.6

Good Mag...Brain Dead ProgrammersBA Always a good magazine. But in the mag app you can not bookmark a specific recipe to come back to. Then if you try it and love it there is no way to save it. I have an Epicurious recipe box that I store recipes in regularly. But thanks to programmers who seem to have no idea what a recipe is, there is no way to save an excellent recipe. Can't even use the built in apple print, they haven't figured out how to do this apparently, or someone thinks if we can print it maybe they won't sell magazines..Version: 3.9.1

The app is mehThe app is pretty bare bones which is fine considering I'm only using it for the content. scrolling up/down to get through pages would be nice..Version: 5.2

Update made my subscription uselessThe recent update turned the previously well-designed app into something useless... essentially just a pdf of the magazine with no interactive features, including no ability to bring up ingredient lists and recipes. On my iPad, the print is so small, I can’t even read it, it won’t allow me to pinch enlarge or turn the iPad sideways to try to enlarge print enough to actually read it. If this isn’t changed back by the end of the month, I’ll be cancelling my subscription after years of enjoying the magazine. Seriously- what were you thinking?.Version: 5.0

Update deletes Pasta AppThe Bon Appetit Pasta App gets deleted with this update. That is not the way to treat a customer! I will NEVER subscribe to this magazine!.Version: 3.2

App ruined. Canceling my subscriptionI’ve subscribed to the app for almost 8 years (and have decades old print copies of the mag), and was willing to pay rather than find what recipes I could online because of the quality product. But when BA changed the app to a (slightly) glorified .pdf, they ruined it. It is much inferior to what one can do on the web. I’m sorry to go, and maybe someday if I happen to hear that BA has brought back a useful format/interface, I’ll resubscribe. But I won’t be holding my breath. 😢.Version: 5.2

Bring back the recipe index with imagesIn this iteration of the app, the most useful thing about it - the recipe index with clickable images that was formerly at the start of each issue in the app - no longer exists. That index was incredibly useful. It allowed me a to feel secure in recycling my paper copies of the magazine because I had an easily accessible soft copy of each recipe in the app. I would frequently peruse just the recipe indexes ahead of planning dinner parties. The static (unclickable) index without images that is at the end of each issue is nowhere near as useful. Please, please bring the clickable index with images back..Version: 5.2

This app has been abandoned.Seems like we’re at Version 1 of the app. Was the old app too expensive to maintain and without profit? Such a shame as I liked the old app and admired how it worked... very elegant. The new version has nothing to admire. Simplistic crap. Why do I have to give this app one star? I’d rather give it zero!.Version: 5.0

Latest update ruined the appI’ve been a long time subscriber through various iterations of the app. Each new update seems to come with less functionality. First we lost landscape viewing and now with this latest updated, every single thing separating this from the paper copy. It’s like they just took pictures of the magazine and uploaded them to the app. What a bad decision to stop investing time and money in what was once a fantastic interactive experience. I feel like this one will lose subscribers. Might be time to look elsewhere..Version: 5.0

Great app gone badWhen I moved abroad, I was thrilled with the option of receiving my BA magazine subscription to my iPad. Loved the layout, the extra features and the feel of the interactive app. Before I downloaded OSX 8.2, the app mysteriously deleted all of my old issues (8) and wouldn't update the library. Finally uninstalled, reinstalled and now it doesn't recognize my account or any past purchases. When I try to set up the All Access option, it says it's already set up and to sign in...even though I'm already signed in. This is especially frustrating because my subscription just renewed, and right now I've paid for a year subscription to a magazine I can't access. Very disappointed with what was a great app and hope that changes and updates will be made available soon..Version: 4.5

For a online user the new format is horribleNot easy to navigate, unenjoyable to read. Return to old version.Version: 5.0

Subscription Means NothingI got a special free year subscription and I was excited to get digital access to all the issues... but you don’t. It only applies to the monthly issues (of which 2 were posted) the others are specials like “thanksgiving” or “party ideas” and that would be awesome except those aren’t included with the subscription! They have to be paid for by issue! So, 50+ issues available to browse in the app and only 4 were accessible with my paid subscription. Useless..Version: 4.7.5

Cone Nast Password IssuesEven though I entered my subscription #, it wouldn't let me enter a my email address/password to login. I had to use my existing New Yorker email/password combo, since it's part of the Conde Nast group. The popup window with the list of Conde Nast sites had appeared way off to the left of my ipad's screen, so I couldn't read them at first--it was only when I tried to reset the password from my computer that I received a list, and realized I should try that--and it worked! I don't know what that will mean for the "auto-renewing" part, since that's a different email address/password combo than I use for my Bon Appetit print magazine subscription, though. This business of one password for all Conde Nast sites seems like a hack waiting to happen. Beautiful display, and I like the navigation. Similar to the New Yorker app that way..Version: 3.2

Doesn't work in landscape orientationThe images are beautiful, the recipes are pretty diverse, but why would anyone design a cooking app that requires a vertical orientation? Initially looking at the magazine homepage, landscape orientation is an option, but as soon as you download an issue and try to use it, you're forced into a vertical orientation. But I want to prop up my iPad on my cover which requires a landscape orientation to stay upright! This is painfully frustrating and clearly a major design flaw. Also, I find it a challenge to navigate back and forth from various areas on the app. One needs to rub the top of the screen "just so" to get the options like "library" to show up. It's annoying. Note, I'm using an iPad Pro and paying digital subscriber..Version: 4.6.7

You had one job ... easy access to recipesI could see getting rid of all the bells and whistles. I don’t need fancy animation or a never-ending scroll of what have you, but for god’s sake, why get rid of the one thing people would consistently reference and even go back to months down the road? The recipe index was the cherry on top of a great experience. By removing it and its pop-up feature, you’ve made it infinitely more difficult to bookmark, email, or even whimsically pick a random issue of the past and select a never before made recipe. I get it, times are tight and there are definitely bigger problems in the world, but man, this is a bummer..Version: 5.0

Can’t exit from issueApp is stuck in the last issue read without any method of exiting.Version: 5.2

Way to sloooooow and dumps contentWhy oh why when your issues are so huge is it not possible to download in the background? And why does app dump all the issues I have downloaded and then make me reload them? And why does it periodically forget me and then make me go through conniptions to get back in? Yes, when I once and a while can read the issues, I enjoy the iPad version, but that doesn't mean I want to sit there and babysit the app while it grinds through its download. Again and again..Version: 3.6

BAThe app keeps crashing. Granted I have an iPad1 but have the latest OS and it s/b compatible. The concept seems wonderful. I will keep trying..Version: 4.0

Like the update but can’t see full recipeThe recent (2023) update is great! I like the interactive app better than the PDF style version. However there seems to be a bug with the recipe cards when the recipe extends beyond the screen. There no scroll bar or way to view the rest of the recipe. Please fix so we can actually cook from the magazine!.Version: 5.8

Bad appVery disappointed in app. I was under the impression that this would work like going through a magazine. Waiting and waiting for one page to load is disappointing. Plus, while one page is loading, you have to keep the app open and if you minimize the app,the download stops. This is absolutely the worse app I've ever used..Version: 3.6

Crashes iOS 11.3 iPad Pro 9.7Nothing more to add crashes always.Version: 4.6.7

New Cover, Old IssueEach month the new issue cover appears in my newsstand, replacing the previous month's issue, however, when I open the "New" issue, the previous month's issue appears. If I go to the App Store and touch "Open" for the new issue, the previous issue still continues to appear. When I am mysteriously successful in bringing in the new issue, I've gone through so many gyrations, I have no idea how I was finally successful. Although I'm not especially fond of reading the magazine electronically, it is a lot easier to read since the print edition has become impossible to read with the ever shrinking font size and the annoying use of light blue print. I have issues in my library that are over twenty years old but in the last few years, I have found myself throwing a current issue away and realize that I haven't even read through the whole issue and don't care. When my subscription expires, I won't renew it..Version: 4.5

RegressionI used the first app that came out, back in 2014 and I have to say that the new format is a regression. It went from interactive to a magazine in PDF format. No instructions, no easy way to navigate through the recipes. Wish they would go back to the original format. Sad that this is what the app had come too. I love the physical magazine, and I love the YouTube channel, hate the app..Version: 5.2

Poor user experienceNew editions of this magazine do not automatically download in the background. You have to keep the Newsstand app open on the magazine and wait ages for it to finish downloading..Version: 3.6

Ruined a great thing100% agree with the others who said this latest version is a giant step backward. The former app took a great magazine and made it even better and more useful. The recipe index, pop up recipe pages, story layouts, animation, and high level of interactivity made it perfect and fun for consuming and cooking from via iPad. It’s not even really an app now so much as it is just a scaled down pdf of the print magazine. It’s hard to read, hard to use, and hard to navigate. Type is to small, you have to flip back and forth between photo and recipe because it’s meant as a two page spread in print. To add insult to injury, they took all the old fabulous issues away (along with all my bookmarks) so I can’t even refer back to those. It’s awful in every way. This was the last great iPad magazine app. I’m fairly devastated. They need to revert back but I suspect they won’t for short-sighted, penny pinching reasons. Way to go Condé Nast..Version: 5.0

New update is the worstWhere did all of the old functionality go that made the magazine so useful?.Version: 5.0

Latest update has frankly ruined the appThis had been one of my favorite apps, making reading Bon Appétit an immersive, interactive experience. I truly can’t name a similar app that had this look and feel. Now, it’s trash. Sorry, your update has taken a clear 5-star app and turned it into something boring and forgettable! Did you lay off the staff that created all the digital features? Much harder to read on top of way more ads! This just feels lazy. Not worth the battery on iPad anymore, I’m afraid to report. Please go back to the previous format. DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU ENJOY THIS APP!.Version: 5.0

Really annoying... That I have to constantly sift through editions I haven't purchased to get to the ones I have, clicking I mostly-hidden (due to poor page layout) 'show more' button at the bottom of the page. And why does it stop in the midst of downloading. REALLY. Annoying! The MOST annoying thing however is that it loses - or deletes- issues I've downloaded, so I have to go through the whole download process again every time I try to look for a recipe. It looks like I might be able to troubleshoot, if I'm a subscriber, but not if I've purchased issues as a one-off. Am not likely to become a subscriber this way. A good app, seriously let down by a few really poor features.Version: 4.2

Downgraded appIt used to be this amazing interactive app that allowed you to see all of the recipes at the beginning and jump to them and allowed you to view the recipe on its own page. Now it is an uneditable PDF that you can’t even zoom in to view the recipe. It’s a horrible experience. You can get these PDF’s for free usually from your local library app and not have to pay for this. Or just go to their website since you can at least zoom in on the website. Hopefully they will switch back..Version: 5.0

Terrible.Bon Appetit is Incredibly kludgy! Falls into a crash loop saying "cannot open downloaded file. Close app and re-download." over and over. Compare it to the iPad magazine Savor to get a feel for just how bad the Bon Appetit's interface, sign-in and download process are. Also, I want my Pasta Perfect app back. I purchased it separately. Where is it? It disappeared with install of OS5 newsstand. Apple. You should Censure this product until they figure out how to interface seamlessly with newsstand. It makes the iPad seem crummy..Version: 3.2

It’s alrightI love the magazine but the app isn’t as great. I’d wish it was more interactive. This feels like a scrolling through adobe reader....Version: 5.2

Keep Pasta PerfectPasta perfect is brilliant , the update deletes this. I won't update for this reason.Version: 3.2

Well, it works...The iPad app is alright, no issues that I've found while playing around with it... but why doesn't it support landscape? It's not possible to view an entire spread at once (some of which look GORGEOUS), and it's a needless annoyance to have to mess around with my folio case that props my device up in landscape. Navigating the app is also a bit oblique and not very intuitive or easy. I'd love to see hyperlinks throughout each issue, e.g. tapping on an item in the table of contents to go directly to that page, or tapping text that says "recipe on p. xx" to jump to it. Still, there are a lot of minor things that could be changed that would help immensely..Version: 5.2

Cannot link subscriptionThe three dots they are talking about are not there.Version: 5.8

Slow To The Point of UselessWhen I first downloaded the app, I was so excited I was already planning to see if I could cancel the print subscription. Then I started trying to use it. Every new page requires a download, and it takes forever even on a good connection. The wait time is far too long, even for the most casual reader. I will not use this again. If the developers know what they are doing, they should be serving up nothing more than HTML and appropriately downsized images. If they are trying to deliver magazine pages, they are nuts..Version: 4.2

WAIT why is this portrait mode/pdf-like??I love the magazine/content, and was looking forward to having access to it via ipad app. Immediately turned off by the portrait-only, copy-of-print-magazine-only. I use a bluetooth keyboard / case and I rarely use my ipad in portrait mode! I want to be able to search content, etc., as I can on the Bon Appetit website. What gives??.Version: 5.8

Hate the new updateI absolutely hate the new update. Please change it back. The old version was fun and interactive. I loved the recipe index as an easy way to find links to the recipe I wanted. I had to update to download the Sept 2019 issue and it was very upsetting to find that it’s basically like flipping through the magazine which I receive in hard copy anyways. It makes it way more difficult to read it on my iPad mini as the font is too small scaled down and there is no way to zoom. It seems like a leap backward to placate people who don’t understand technology. If people wanted this format, they should read the magazine in print. Please bring the interactive format back.Version: 5.0

New update of the app won’t load.I have been using the digital version for many years now. This latest update required my to download all of my back issues and since that started won’t even open. Please bring back the previous version..Version: 5.0

RECIPE OPENING PROBLEMS!!!The app is great when the recipes work. Pages open up fast enough with a good connection, idk why people would complain about that. There are a million points for that to bottleneck... BUT there is some bug where the recipes will open for about half a second and then close........ I've tried restarting the app, then restarting my iPad Air, and reinstalling the app... Still the same problem over and over. Please fix Conde naste/Bon appetit!!!.Version: 4.2
