Great port of a bad gameUgh. The mechanics are too divorced from the narrative. The whole game doesn't seem to have much strategy, and the game doesn't use it's setting very well. Avoid..Version: 1.1.3

Its a big okCant seem to get into the game, sticking with civ.Version: 1.0.1

Luck/Skill ratio is waaaaaay off.I've never played the tabletop version of this, but I've played plenty of dice-based games (including Arkham Horror and plenty of Fantasy Flight titles) and I've never seen rolls go this poorly. I can practically predict my rolls: exactly what I don't need. Or one short of success. It's a sad truth that a lot video "board" games ramp up difficulty by making you less lucky, but I've never been as frustrated with a game as I am with this one. I tried a game tonight and the random generator created a board with red/yellow glyphs locked, both in places where it's next to impossible to succeed without those glyphs. I gave it a shot and - surprise - fell one short (no wiggle room) or wasn't even close... with all four of my investigators and a couple of Clues. Stacked games aren't fun. I hope something gets tweaked. Until then, I'm deleting this and freeing precious space on my phone for games that work..Version: 1.3.0

Fantastic game, however...This game is great! Really well ported to iOS. The problem is there is no skip button for the intro video!!!!!! Having watched it around a hundred times now I’m fed up!!!!.Version: 1.5.0

Fun Game!I don't own the board game but own Arkham Horror, and this game captures the feeling well in 'lite' form. I find the game too easy and not punishing/hopeless enough. Also not enough "this roll either makes us or breaks us" moments. I only lost my first game and that was cause I was trying to learn the rules. But I won with random teams for the next 4 gameswith an average score of 4600. I wonder if there is a way to make it more difficult??? Spells cost insanity to cast in Arkham horror, maybe it should the same in Omens? Fun game to play on the subway. Some light tactical decision making..Version: 1.0

This game is waaaaaay to hardDon’t get or spend any money on it. Even on easy you can’t win. If you like losing EVERY SINGLE TIME then get it. I like FF board games… this is nothing like that, almost unbeatable..Version: 1.5.0

Pretty but brokenThe dice mechanic is broken. Pretty much impossible to achieve anything. Encounter win ratio is 3/10 which is ridiculous..Version: 1.5.0

UnderhandedIts an alright game. Good art, confusing but can be fun. What angers me is the underhanded way they gave us an expansion for free and then tricked the players into downloading a patch that locks the expansion down and forces the purchaser of the game to pay to reoprn rhe formerly free expansion. Cheap. Underhanded. Not worth the money..Version: 1.1.3

Fun, but practically impossibleThis game would be a lot more fun if it were more possible to win. The main issue is that the game itself doesn’t scale and it’s too luck-heavy. The game sometimes (and usually) starts you off against tasks that require far more preparation and items than you start with, making it near impossible to get the ball rolling. Even if you do manage to beat an early task, the game can easily spiral out of control. As with most games involving dice, this game is a little too dependent on luck. Even if you’re fully stocked and armed to the teeth, you can still scrub out and fail the task, potentially getting killed off right off the bat. There’s very little strategy involved. However, this app is probably better than buying the actual board game and getting frustrated at how much money you spent on that, so I would recommend the app over the board game if you NEED to play it. All in all, though, save your money and buy something like Ascension instead..Version: 1.5.0

Doesn't work on IPod Touch 2nd GenerationCareful, the game doesn't work in the 2nd generation Ipod touch, it's hard to tell apart from 3rd gen. You'd need to check model numbers..Version: 1.0

Unskippable Cinematics and Bad DesignLong unakippable cinemaatics at the start and end of every match. It's not that the game is too random, it's that the randomness is poorly planned and feels even more punishing and demoralizing than it is. Rally questionable game design..Version: 1.5.0

Impossible to winWaste of money. Game relies on the roll of the dice. I played one game where I never achieved a roll to complete the task. Recommend Catan instead.Version: 1.5.0

Not very randomThe game's inherent lack of reasonable random dice roles makes this game incredibly poor. When you need very easy roles to pass an event and they continuously fail to eventuate, its very obvious the chance has been tweaked to increase the difficulty. 20 games in a row prove to me the random events are manufactured for the moment..Version: 1.2.3

Cthulhu Vs. The Gods of RNGPersonally, I would go with Cthulhu over a random number generator (RNG) any day. Cthulhu is at least less fickle. It's a beautiful game and has a great story with it, but the game mechanic is based completely on a random number generator (RNG). So strategy and careful planning are useless as everything is a roll of the die. So you can complete several tough adventures in a row, all because the dice roll just the way you needed them to do. Only to fail on a simple one, because the dice failed to give the one thing that you really needed. And once you start to fail adventures you tend to continue to fail. When you complete an adventure you can get items that allow you to modify die rolls, get more dice to roll, heal and so on. But each item is discarded once used, so losing an adventure means you don't get to replace any used items. And so you get weaker. A character can take a turn to heal or buy a new item, but taking a turn to do so is gamble as you can only do one thing. And the longer the game continues the harder the adventures can get. So it's easy to find yourself in an unwinable situation. Unless, of course, you get really lucky on the dice rolls. Just ignore that fact that relying on a roll of the dice got you into this situation..Version: 1.2.7

Won't workLiterally just bought this game and it keeps telling unable to download..Version: 1.5.0

OK, but...Please fix the constant crashing... as soon as you receive a notification (iOS5) it is a almost guaranteed crash. When relaunching the app, I have to start a new game more often than not, and I'm yet to finish a single play in 4 hours as a result. And no, I don't want to turn off notifications to see if I can get through a game without issues. Edit: actually crashing occurs regularly, no need for notifications to trigger them! (thankfully it seems resuming is less of an isue than I originally thought - still by no means acceptable).Version: 1.0

Was great years ago, but now crap.I bought this game years ago, but the lack of support has brought it to its knees literally. I can’t even get through a game at this point without it freezing up. Do not buy unless they fix..Version: 1.5.0

Great when it worksFantastic game but made pretty much unplayable by constant crashes.Version: 1.0.5

Great game, but... (updated)Update 2.: It's been years since the game came out, and FFG still wasn't able to add iCloud support, Game Center integration, and still charges extra for the iPad version when almost all other apps are universal. Well, you won't see any more money from me... Update: The game is still fun but now I see some issues. Hence the review update. First, no iCloud support (or any other online storing function). Not cool FFG! Also, if I want to play it on my iPad I have to buy it again (which I refuse to do so). Don't be greedy FFG and make this a universal app! Lastly, this new monster appearance mechanic is plain ugly. What was wrong with the old one?! Original: This is simply a great game, requiring a lot of strategy (even though throwing dice is random, you can cleverly tip the scale to your favor with skills, items, and some general thinking). It is fun, and looks really nice. What else would you need? Also, with this latest Cthulhu expansion the challenge went up considerably, which is a welcome addition as the base game was kind of easy. I cannot recommend Elder Sign enough..Version: 1.3.0

Abandoned softwareHasn’t been updated in five years. Lots of bugs on the iPhone. 13 freezes doesn’t respond to input and so on. Skip it..Version: 1.5.0

Worse Cthulhu game ever...Thank god I tried the app before buying the board game. The gameplay is simply so boring. You’ve been warned.Version: 1.5.0

Fun, clunky dice game with interface problemsIf you are looking for a spooky Lovecratfian horror game, this isn't it. But it is a fun dice game with a decent Lovecraft theme, if you can get past the flawed interface. The interface is not only clunky, but inconsistent - you can tap on your items to see what they do on one screen, but another. Same deal for the flavor text on the challenges. The game will even let you waste time futiley trying to succeed at a challenge even when you clearly don't have enough dice left to fill its requirements (there's an option to give up if you tap on the name of the challenge). When you use an item to re-roll some of your dice, the box where you select which dice to re-roll covers up the cards that tell you what symbols you're trying to roll in the first place! Why doesn't the game just prompt us to tap on the dice which we want to re-roll? There is some strategy with which investigators to pick (I like to use the people who are immune to a certain obstacle against it - i.e. using the nun to get rid of locked dice, the scientist for challenges that would normally spawn a monster, etc.) and which resources to use, but luck is a HUGE factor here. It's easy to start off with very difficult challenges, or to end up in a death spiral where you don't have the items or health you need to have any decent chance to win. At least it's easier to "flip the board" and start over here than with the physical version!.Version: 1.4.3

Great game crap updateDon't download the latest update. So many issues and crashes all the time. Up until now no problem fantastic game. Just this latest release buggy as hell..Version: 1.0.5

Great game ruined by difficultyOk, the concept and implementation are very good. The game would be a lot of fun - except it's insanely difficult. Winning each round largely depends on chance and the odds are heavily stacked against the player. Even if you win most rounds - which I certainly don't - the enemy always advances more quickly than you. Maybe you just need more tolerance for frustration than I've got. But there's only so many times you can watch the bad guy's counter ticking up every few rounds like a metronome while yours stays firmly at zero. Most frustrating is that it would be the easiest thing in the world for the devs to add an easier difficulty setting..Version: 1.0.1

5 stars for the basic, 1 for IthaquaI enjoyed the basic game so much that I bought two expansions, Cthulhu and Ithaqua. Whilst the basic game is excellent for its genre, and Cthulhu is quite nice, I cannot discourage you more from buying Ithaqua. Not only is it downright impossible - I've played it in endless variations over twenty times and haven't won a single game - but it's also patently unfair, with a random generator that can cause you to lose the entire game at a moment in an advanced stage. This shoddy expansion has put me off the game altogether. A shame..Version: 1.4.1

Driving me crazier than CthuluLet me start by saying I love Arkham Horror, and have been playing it for years. Part of what I love is the deep challenge which results in great satisfaction experienced during the occasional win. It also recognizes the difference between the fun of a challenge and the frustration of IMPOSSIBLE! This game basically works on a die-roll system, where one starts with six die, and eliminates one die to reroll the others, a la Yahtzee. But somehow the 1/6 odds of dice become 3/50 odds to get the emblem needed to progress, and the Ancient One also randomly Causes other losses (sanity, stamina, or Doom to bring the game one step closer to lost). I love Lovecraft, and the Arkham Horror board game, and will still occasionally play this monstrosity. I would NOT recommend it to someone without the patience of a saint, and even then, that saint will want to throw his iPhone through a window. Please learn that ratcheting difficulty to impossible is not a substitute for a challenging, engaging game system..Version: 1.0.5

LameI love FFG, but they do not know how to market their apps. This game is way too expensive. It's not much fun (as a solo game). The iap are absurd. The fact that they didn't make this a universal app feels like they are just money grubbers..Version: 1.2

Avoid this gameProbably the worst rules I’ve seen for a digital boardgame port. I couldn’t finish a game in part because I kept falling asleep. Avoid this or Cthulhu will rise again..Version: 1.5.0

Not well designedI really wanted to like this app because I enjoy the board game version but this is just too awkward to use. It takes several minutes for the game to load after you pick your team and elder god. There should be some way to skip the intro garbage and ust play the game but every time you have to wait for the game to finish the silly little animation thing at the start. I don't play this very often precisely for this reason. I actually tried to play again this morning but the app just locked up during the first quest and I had to restart my phone to get out of it at all. This could have been a great game but it's just not very well designed from a UX standpoint..Version: 1.5.0

It's Okay, But Has IssuesFor starters, I own and play the board game frequently and, unlike other games, namely Neuroshima Hex, this game is better on the table than a screen. The user interface is often confusing. Misclicks happen often with no way to undo them. There are too many cinematic transitions that arbitrarily lengthen game time. There's a transistion in between basically anything that could possibly happen and anything after that. It's borderline ridiculous. The game is slightly different as in the board game you don't auto lose when the doom track fills up. Also, I really do feel this is harder than the board game. I only lose on the table about 25% of the time over many playthroughs both solo and teaching new people. I've beaten this once. The discrepancy is too big for me to assume it's just bad luck. If you don't want the physical version (which isn't that expensive) and just need to play this, it's serviceable. But it's not for me..Version: 1.4.2

Fun, but only for masochist.Elder Signs: Omens is a decent game. As a big fan of Arkham Horror, I jumped at the chance to play a dice-game based around it on my iPhone. The game has great production values, a simple interface and wonderful atmosphere. However, unless you're a masochist who enjoys being beaten brutally into the ground as you roll 20 dice and never see the symbol you need even once, you may get turned off after a few attempts. The game is hard, relying on 95% luck to win-- and even that is stacked against you. Many of the challenges are near impossible, even with items and clues being used... And to make matters worse, buying those items, pr even healing, loses you a turn, which gets you one tick closer to the horrible midnight effects that make things 100 times worse (nothing like watching your Doom meter jump 3 points because all four of your investigators fail a challenge that refuses to give you the rolls you need, no matter how many items you need.) Some may enjoy the challenge, but for those just looking for a fun game to pass the time, I'd pass on this. After a few games, you'll swear the "random " dice rolls are rigged against you..Version: 1.2.7

Great presentation, difficult gameplayAnd I thought arkham horror was hard to beat! Visually it is stunning, great animations and fantastic sound effects/music but I found the game to be extremely difficult..Version: 1.0

Wrong balanceGreat production values, but it is like a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces, it can't be completed. Balance and challenge is great in a game. Tasks which have a dice possibility of 1/100 aren't either of these things...we move from the realm of chance to fluke. I hope this may be redressed in updates so I can actually play again..Version: 1.0.5

Like playing slots at a casino(not in a good way)The variability of playing anything above easy feels like the rolls are absolutely against you, giving you everything but the results you need. Makes the game feel frustrating and not at all like you have a chance. I’ve had to start over on just the second level so many times, I may just delete the game out of pure frustration..Version: 1.5.0

Cthuhlu: devourer of funThe basic game is a fun and entertaining way to pass a few minutes in a pick up and put down game. Based on H P lovecraft literature you expect a touch of hopelessness and it works well. However the expansion ruins it. The longer adventure is a nice idea but it seems nigh on impossible to get to the third stage let alone actually complete the game! It renders Half of the characters unplayable, including one if the ones you get as part of the expansion!!? As midnight can cost your investigators 2 pips of sanity or stamina, certain adventures can increase this, and some adventures cost you 0-3 sanity or stamina just to attempt them, all the characters with a starting stat of 3 are unusable as they can (and will frequently) be on full Heath then just drop dead or go mad at midnight!! And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, the game will just kill them off! I have also started several games and found them to just be impossible; one starting adventure was the antiquarian (who locks both red and yellow glyphs) and another 2 adventures locked a green glyph each leaving me just 4 glyphs to play with and most adventures require at least 4 glyphs to complete them! The second stage has a really good mechanic which has you completing (potentially) easier adventures whilst simultaneously spending investigation glyphs to find the lost island. The "cthuhlu tokens" are an interesting idea. The non amulet ones are pretty cool (except the one that is just 5 trophies; I spent 15 hard won trophies on a cthuhlu token hoping for essential game items and got 5 trophies! That is utterly ridiculous!!). The problem is that the Cthulhu tokens are difficult enough to get, ( most i ever had the chance to get was 3, with only one being an amulet piece) and you have to get enough of them to get all 3 parts of the amulet or the final stage is impossible. If you could just buy the amulet shards for 15 trophies it would be hard enough. Or continue the investigation mechanic after finding the island to find the pieces of the amulet. I want to like it and want to enjoy it but having all your investigators exterminated, on day 4, yet again, regardless of your actions, before they have got anywhere, just isn't fun! Basically I have paid money to make a game I enjoyed; frustrating, horribly annoying and utterly unplayable. DO NOT BUY THE EXPANSION!!!.Version: 1.1.3

Bug: Darrel Simmons can’t upgrade diceThis game would be better if Devs would test. You cannot upgrade a red 4 investigation dice to a 5 using hometown advantage. That means that investigator is a rather useless character. I also think it’s extremely cheesy to have the iPad version and iPhone version separate purchases..Version: 1.5.0

No soundJust bought the game and there’s no sound on the iPad or iPhone..Version: 1.5.0

Doesn't work. This may be a good game with lots of nuance and strategy, but since I can't even seem to properly load all of the tutorial videos, it seems like I'll never know. I own both the HD and the regular version of this game and BOTH of them crash EVERY time I try to load the Map or HUD tutorial on multiple devices. I'm a huge fan of Fantasy Flight Games and have found that their boardgames are, almost without exception, some of the best ones you can buy. Maybe in time, they will approach the same degree of quality in their digital offerings. But for now - I'd say save your money..Version: 1.0

Pretty but pointlessIt would have been nice to pay this much for a game that was ACTUALLY WINNABLE but sadly, this is not that game. The ONLY people who claim to have won, have done so brcause they followed a walkthrough. That's not playing, that's a waste of time and money. If your idea of fun is a massively frustrating waste of time, then this game is for you....Version: 1.0.1

WARNING Updates delete purchased expansionCan you explain why, since the last update, the cthuhlu expansion I purchased has now been deleted? I am not paying for it again. No response??? POOR QUALITY SERVICE - DONT GET RIPPED OFF LIKE I DID.Version: 1.1.3

DisappointedIt’s a great board game but this app, even with its graphics and story is hindered by 90% of the time missing the dice roll by one. It’s more than frustrating, it feels like it’s designed to fail. Lost interest so won’t be buying the other stories..Version: 1.5.0

WasteWaste of money and time..Version: 1.5.0

Why are you making me pay again??I bought the expansion and I thought it was good... But when a new patch came out, it locked my expansion again and they're asking me to pay again?? Please fix :( Thanks....Version: 1.1.3

Great Concept But Difficult As HellA great Cthulhu game on the iOS but I find it extremely difficult to play. Since I started playing it last year, I never once been able to finish a single game. Consider making an easy mode for beginners so that we can get a hang of things first..Version: 1.4.2

So very close...This is a very, very well made product. The artwork is exemplary and the whole look and feel is slick and well polished. I enjoyed Arkham Horror and found this to be a fun mini-version of the same thing. I'll admit I think there's simply too much luck required, but still fun. However… It's really stretching the limits of what you can see and interact with on the iPhone screen. If you've got a retina screen then you can see all those crisp graphics but really they're very tiny and dragging those tiny glyphs around is not for the ham-fingered. If you don't have a retina screen, forget it, the game is pretty much illegible and those nice graphics are pixel soup. I consoled myself that I'd be able to play it on the iPad, and was extremely disappointed to find it (as with most others I suppose) doesn't use the retina graphics in the iPad when double sized. I was further disappointed to find it didn't go universal and that I'd have to re-purchase the same product (at a higher price!) to play it. A huge let down, which is a real shame for such a well made game..Version: 1.0

Crashes a lotGreat game but very frustratingly crashes regularly if not for this would be a 5 star game.Version: 1.0.5

AwfulI should have read the previous reviews before purchasing this app. A game with so much potential wasted due to the fact that dice rolling/ luck takes over the whole game. In addition, the odds are stacked heavily against the player with monsters having further advantages..Version: 1.2.3

Crazy difficult!Go read the blogs before you buy, people. I sure didn’t, and everyone agrees that this game is nearly impossible to win, even on the so-called easy levels. Everything is trying to make you lose the game, and the one time I actually got enough elder signs, the doom track advanced and I STILL LOST. I want my $3.99 back..Version: 1.5.0

Very good time killerOk so it's got a very steep learning curve but with patience you've got yourself a very involving and rewarding game. Visit the dev's website for some tips on strategy and tactics if you find yourself loosing far to often... You will still loose, a lot, could do with being just a bit easier, some difficulty settings would be a major improvement.Version: 1.0.1

Abandoned?Edit: 3 years and counting since an update. :( ——— I used to play this almost every day; I have all the DLC. One of the best games of its time on the app store. Except now, it's been seemingly abandoned; nearly 2.5 years sinxe the last update. I check back in periodically to see if anything new is up, but am consistently disappointed..Version: 1.5.0

IPad version sold seperateI do really like this game, but I am severely annoyed that I have to buy the iPad version of the game separate. It really makes me want to stop buying electronic versions of games from Fantasy Flight. This is the only game/app that has asked me to do this. Sorry Fantasy Flight. I love your board games, but you have to tighten up how you distribute electronically..Version: 1.5.0

Crushingly, brutally hardGreat production value, great graphics, sound & concept for any lover of Lovecrafts work. But this game is brutally unfair. I've sank hours into it and only ever beaten it ONCE. (With a 'normal' difficulty elder thing.) I have no idea why anyone would purchase the optional harder difficulty creatures like Cthulhu. If you enjoy losing, and having only a 1 in 1000,000 chance at winning a game, download this. I must be a masochist, because I keep redownloading it, and getting so frustrated I promptly delete it again. My desire for good Lovecraft-based games can not over-ride how insanely hard this is. Maybe that's the point. The creators serve the Elder ones and seek to drive us mad by having us play this..Version: 1.3.7
