BattleLore: Command for Negative User Reviews

What the hell with the diceThis game is good except the dice. Graphics good. Story good. AI good. Dice are awful. Unfortunately the dice is most the game. The last time I played I was protecting the cattle. Enemy goes first. There are five cattle to protect. Before I got a turn 3 cattle were dead. That is 9 his on 12 dice. My turn came. I had 8 dice. I got zero hits. This is every game. It is no fun. Too bad. The board game is awesome. This is just work..Version: 1.2.2

Good but unbalancedWell made game with good production values. Enjoying single player but multiplayer has a problem. Whoever plays the bad guys can just spam 6 demon lords making them almost impossible to beat. This concentrates their force into fewer units meaning they can move a greater percentage of their army and attack with a greater percentage each turn. It also means that when they are hit they are less likely to lose a unit. There is no advantage to fielding an army with more units spread out. We have played each game type and in each case 6 chaos lords defeats whatever is sent against them. The roc warrior is not as strong. I have the board game and it only comes with one chaos lord. This should have been the limit set on the app too..Version: 1.2.2

Worst tactical system ever!,Would could have been a great game is ruined by a crazy tactical system allowing you to only ever move a portion of your units each turn -- Too much reliance on random results for strategy.Version: 1.1.0

AnnoyingGame seems rigged, get in a winning position then all the rolls go against you. Needs work as very unbalanced. Do not buy unless you like the feeling of annoyance..Version: 1.0

So closeThe game seems like it will be fun but there are two fundamental problems... * No way to get terrain information until after movement. Knowing for example that a forest limits attack dice is very important to know before hand. * No way to save mid game. This is a deal breaker for me. For iPad games I don't usually have more than a couple of minutes at a time to play. That means I will NEVER finish a game..Version: 1.0

Frustrating! The other reviews are correct. This game is ruined by a bizarre AI that has incredible luck while your forces couldn't hit a barn door from 2 paces. Very unbalanced game play that spoils what could have been a good game..Version: 1.2.2

Needs more varietyI'm a huge, huge fan of iphone strategy games, and this one has polish, good AI and some very clever design decisions going for it. It really lacks variety though. There aren't many units to choose from, and fewer that you'll really want. It gives you powers in the form of cards to play, but pretty soon you realize you're just seeing the same handful over and over. Overall the sense of the game is repetition. Expanded content and adding some interesting units and abilities could have made this a five-star imho..Version: 1.2.1

Balance way off, not very funThe game has lots of potential, but the balance is clearly off. The AI rolls are almost always a success in some way. Hits, lore, special abilities. It hardly ever misses, but the player rolls are much less favorable. The balance is so off it makes the game from a practical standpoint nearly unplayable. Most assuredly it makes the game an exercise in futility and not at all enjoyable. I also would like to have a deck of command cards vs the same of selections. Not sure why they did this. You are stuck with the same choices and it loses some if the variety of using a deck. The game needs some fixing, balance us a real problem, and variety of command choices is limited. A near miss...not too happy with the game as it is right now..Version: 1.0

Yeh but no....Great story line 5/5. Too bad about the poor game mechanics. Not really strategy when 30% is luck. I'm ova restarting mission 5 times cos of poor luck.... Uninstalled.Version: 1.2.1

Dice rolling seems skewedNice game and compliments the board game well. Would be nice for an option to roll real dice as the "random" dice results don't seem that random..Version: 1.0

Terrible.Terrible. Not worth the money..Version: 1.2.2

Waste of timeI just uninstalled this thing. What a waste of great graphics and a battle system. What kills it is the difficulty. It's impossible. My last battle went like this, 6 of my archer units fire in two rounds. I got one hit, one retreat. Four enemy units go and he gets six hits, a retreat and a poison. That's how almost every battle goes. It took me six tries to get past round 2 of the campaign. It's a joke. Difficulty is not adjustable either. That's no way to design a game based on such a great board game. Unless they upgrade it, I won't touch this again..Version: 1.2.1

No pass & playCan't play with friends, virtual or sitting next to them. This huge missing feature is -1 star. Why make a virtual board game that one can't play a friend with? I wanted to pass and play with my family but I can't. The other -1 is because the campaign is too short and that there is no difficulty setting. Has potential, but misses the mark, especially for the $10 price tag. Feels like a $2 game. As for the cpu cheating, it sure feels that way, but the game might be too easy if it didn't cheat..Version: 1.0

Too small on IPhone 5sIf you have a small screen like on the iPhone 5s or earlier it's not worth playing this without a magnifying glass. It will ruin your eyesight. It is much better on an iPad mini or higher. Some zoom capability is needed for smaller screens or you need reading glasses. The game combat is frustrating. I play the he board game so I’m disappointed that the combat doesn’t reflect probabilities provided by the board game dice..Version: 1.2.2

This game is Really difficult.Really? Can't get past second battle. Absurdly unfair odds. AI always wins. Otherwise it would be awesome. I don't mind a challenge, but this is just stupid. Update: Wait wait. It gets better. I try again, because I really enjoy tactics games and I want to be able to like this game. I finally start to get a slight advantage over the opponent. What does the AI do? It plays a defensive Lore that, after at least 6x replaying this same battle, I've never seen before: "move your opponents forces at random." Random my foot! It moved only the units that had Lore buffs and were about to defeat some enemies. I call SHENANIGANS! Update: Played two more rounds since last update and... Drum roll... FINALLY vanquished the enemy. My trick: always double up your units to support each other and pin the enemy as much as possible. You get much more successful rolls when the enemy is pinned. The difficulty level is pretty high in this game, but I kept going back for more. I guess I like the abuse..Version: 1.2.1

Loses progress on force quit >:-|The game got wedged in a weird state where I couldn't get rid of the Lore menu. So I force-quit the game, expecting that (like with any worthwhile game) my progress would be saved. But no. This is a *turn-based game*—how much space could it possibly take to store the game state every turn in case of a crash? At any rate, loss of a few hours' gameplay is an automatic bad review in my book..Version: 1.0

Good but.....A well made strategy game. Looks and plays well on the iPad. Just enough complexity to make you think without getting a headache. But one major fault....you are unable to save mid-battle. Each battle can easily take 30 minutes or more and without a save option you can find yourself having wasted a lot of time. Dev's need to realise that a mobile device is not the place for games that wont save, especially turn based tactical games. 3 stars for that not including it, 5 stars if you implement it..Version: 1.2.1

It's all luckThis game is a bait and switch. It has all the trappings of an excellent tactical miniatures game. A clever command system. Interesting powers and terrain. And yet, none of this matters. The outcome of the game is overwhelmingly determined by who has the best dice rolls. It's a total luck fest..Version: 1.0

Almost Brilliant, but balance is way offI liked my first few scenarios, but the more I played the more frustrating it got. It took me 6 tries to beat the fourth scenario. The Uthak seem seriously overpowered. And the die rolling is very tilted towards the enemy. Is this how they sought to make up for a weak AI? The red team hits almost every time, while the blue team whiffs constantly. I know random results include "runs", but this has been going on since I started, so 10-12 games so far. I hope they can balance it with an update at some point..Version: 1.0

Gets boring fastIt's cool until you play over 10 games :/ it would be better if wasn't turn based. It gets boring quickly. Needs updates :/ unless u know u like the game I wouldn't buy.Version: 1.2.1

Good conversion of boardgame but pretty steep curveGreat conversion of the board game, but boy is the enemy AI tough! Seems to always roll what it wants on the dice when you seem to get poor rolls. Currently grinding frustratingly against this luck factor on the rookery stage. Frustrating watching it roll results that mean it slaughters your troops and rolls right on over two units at a time....whilst your own units blow ineffectual raspberries as a response...!.Version: 1.0

Good boardgame, so-so iPad gameI’m a big fan of Battledore as a boardgame, but not sure it translates well on the iPad. Tedious animations make gameplay feel sluggish, and as mentioned in many other reviews the lack of an undo for inadvertent lore selections is infuriating. I think it’s an especially bad fit for the iPad mini, where small screen size makes it look junky and hard to see when you zoom out to try to take in the whole battlefield..Version: 1.2.1

Please please please...I'm begging here...balance this game and add pass n play! It could be wonderful! There's way too much potential here, but regardless....playing this game makes me want to crush my iPad. I love strategy games and I want to love this app version of battlelore as much as I love the physical game, but when I'm rolling 9/10 misses to the AIs 9/10 hits, it's natural to get frustrated. Till Heroscape returns and comes out with an app version, I'll continue giving battlelore a chance..Version: 1.0

Not badNot bad, it seems to be the board game all there just without the extra hardware such as actual dice throwing. But there’s no save function for mid battle and battles can take half an hour. That’s just a no go for mobile for me so unfortunately it’s a delete. Also hasn’t been updated for latest screens..Version: 1.2.2

OkayI mistakenly thought this would be a fairly straight adaptation of the board game. While it is clearly based on and inspired by Battlelore, 2nd edition, much of what I found interesting about the original is absent. Probably done to make the game more accessible, but not particularly fun or engaging. Definitely not a ten dollar app. Very disappointing..Version: 1.0

Try again fantasy flight...I usually enjoy fantasy flight board games, but not this one. The graphics and story art are great but the actual gameplay is not. Combat is broken into 4 sections. First one seems useless. Movement and combat are the meat of it. I REALLY dislike the way movement is done in this game. It limits your choices of what units to choose based on the battlefield being broken into left middle and right. You get to pick from a list of predefined cards of how many from each side can take action, and this gets exhausted until you take a turn refreshing it or pick another side to work on. There are some other special movement cards you can use, but this DOES NOT feel like it's a strategic choice. It feels like a limitation for some unknown reason. Combat is not good either. When you fight, units can hit, miss, push, or get a rune action. The rune result feels like it should not be a result of combat. You can use rune powers on groups when you get enough, and they are cool, but the way you get them from combat is stupid. The push action is SUPER annoying. This means sometimes when your group can hit twice, instead it pushes away and can only attack once. So these two things combined in combat result in a system that is annoying. Combine that with bad movement and you get gameplay that is not enjoyable. The only reason I rated this as a 2 star is because the graphics, and art are good, but not enough to save this game. Don't waste your $$$.Version: 1.2.1

Complicated where simpler would be betterThe game has needless complications - for example limiting unit actions among 3 artificial channels that have nothing to do with actual combat tactics. And more of same throughout the game. You could take out 50% of the complicated rules in this game and it would become a 100% better tactical game..Version: 1.2.1

AI biased gameplayAs others have noted the game skews dice results heavily in favor of the computer - I assume to make up for poor AI intelligence. This makes the game infuriating to play because your good positioning and strategy are negated when your units always miss and the AI's always hit. Of course, they might also be doing this to drag out the time spent playing the campaign so that you will supposedly feel like you got more play time for your buck. However, playing the same scenario 15 times because you've been cheated out of victory doesn't feel very rewarding. Fix the skewed dice rolls and this game may have legs, but leave it as is and you'll alienate the user base..Version: 1.2.1

Could have been good ...Like many other reviews have pointed out, while this game could have been 5 stars, the impossibly cheap A.I. Keeps the game from being enjoyable, and because this game is so single player focused it kills the game. I don't care how familiar you are with the game, the rules or what strategy you use, there is no reason that three of your archer units taking six different dice rolls against one unit can not generate a single hit, yet the A.I. nearly never fails a roll. It's a shame the devs couldn't use a true random dice algorithm. Hopefully they update the game because as of now it's virtually unplayable..Version: 1.0

Fun but flawed adaptation of the gameCampaign is fun. The biggest problem is that combat plays out too SLOW - when it's the enemy's turn I just put my iPad down for a minute and then come back and see which of my units survived until the part of the game where I actually get to PLAY again. This game oddly seems to be ashamed of its board game roots - the dice are abstracted as a unit having a "17% chance" of something coming up. The interface is a little clunky, especially for stuff like skipping your archers' movement so they'll get a bonus attack. The game loves to rotate the camera wildly to show off two units that are fighting each other from a sexy angle, but this makes it needlessly difficult to tell what side of the board is which. If you're a fan of the original board game version, be warned that supposedly some units' abilities have been oversimplified..Version: 1.2.1

DIE AI!!!I like the gameplay quite a bit, but the AI is very overwhelmingly strong. I also agree with some of the other players. 4 stages of play seem useless and the 'pushing' is unique and useful at time, but it drastically can hinder a particular units play. Also the 'lanes' are unique, but very limiting and also frustrating when I cannot use the one I need. Especially when the enemy practally knows the perfect action every time. Lastly a difficulty level would be nice. Want to play, but I will wake my kid with how angry I get!!!!!.Version: 1.2.1

A fun game but rolls seems to be skewedBeing a fan of the boardgame this was a must buy for me. The game is great though I wish there was an undo spell selection. Numerous times I have looked at a spell to review it and then went to exit out only to cast the spell. It has actually cost me a few mission losses. But my biggest complaint is the skewed die rolls. They seem to favor the enemy more, and i have played the boardgame. I've looked at probability of the rolls in the help menu. Ive played this about 20 times and cant even get past mission 2 because of these rolls. The enemy archers wipe me out before i can close the distance and my archers cant seem to hit the broadside of a barn. Its only a 16% chance for my archers to hit, but the enemy should be the same unless they get poison to proc..Version: 1.0

Enjoyable but slow and occasionally glitchyThe game is generally fun to play, but there’s no way to expedite opponents game speed in campaign mode and, without being able to save progress on half-played campaign levels, the game will occasionally turn off forcing to restart from the beginning of the level..Version: 1.2.2

What a jokeIf you hate your phone and have an extra $10 then I highly recommend this game. It will take your money then proceed to encourage you to break your phone in the most imaginative of ways! Seriously, the dice fall in favor of the cpu every time. Any win is a lucky win regardless of your strategy considering the cpu will likely wipe out your forces every match. I absolutely love this game and was really looking forward to the mobile version. I'm highly disappointed that I get maybe 2 kills in a match. Three on a good day. I'm deleting the app, but I'm not asking for my money back. Maybe they can use that money to make the game fair....Version: 1.2.1

Brutal is accurateAs others have said, it's an excellent game, but brutal. Some of the campaign maps feel a bit like grinding but others are well balanced. I actually like dice in my war games because it reflects the vagaries of war. However, scoring no hits from 4 rolls of my archers, followed by 3 hits from 3 by the enemy is very frustrating. The problem is not the dice per se, but the extreme results that are possible from the rolls. You can play the same tactics and lose heavily or win heavily, depending on your luck. Still a very well made and enjoyable game, but could be better with a few tweaks on the dice..Version: 1.0

Feels cheap and cheatsI always wanted to try a C&C game. After playing this I never want to play Memoir 44, Battle lore 2nd, or C&C ever. I don't know if the dice probability for each unit is different. If it is the campaign or what but my dice miss more then the red. The special abilities of the red (computer) player is better. Automatic kills (true they lose one of their guys, but every time a unit dies they roll one more die) and poison is way better than your archers attacking twice. It doesn't feel balanced. I would be fine the probability to roll hits were different but then I would expect to have better abilities. I would also hope the game tutorial told me that. If it is the difficulty of the campaign ramping up I would expect that not in the second real scenario. So in closing it either feels like it cheats or it feels cheap and unbalanced. I am sadden that I wasted my ten bucks on this..Version: 1.0

Capture the essence but may need some tweaking?I'm loving how the app captures the essence, feel and, of course, game play of the tabletop version of Battlelore. It does seem that the probability algorithm of the dice is skewed in favor of the enemy dice. I have been cataloging the number of hits I roll vs. the number of hits rolled by the enemy for the last 24 games in campaign mode and the enemy rolls on average 9 hits to every one of mine. That makes it nearly impossible to succeed at progressing through the game. I'm a bit frustrated..Version: 1.0

Multiplayer questionI’m wondering if you can still play this game online?.Version: 1.2.2

UNPLAYABLEThe game is fun, but unbelievably slow paced. It takes 15-25 minutes for a skirmish with a total of 6 turns. And this is amplified by the fact that the game is difficult. So if you lose near the end of that 20 minutes for a scenario, you're having to play through the same painstakingly slow process all over again. GLITCH: On like the 6th stage of the game, once you beat the first boss Ravos, the game shuts down completely and you go back to the beginning of the scenario. It took me 8-10 tries to actually beat the 30 minute skirmish and then I finally win and it SHUTS DOSN AND DOESNT SAVE. So with my strategy in hand I beat it two more times and both times it shuts down the second you take Ravos last life away. UNPLAYABLE. PLEASE FIX..Version: 1.0

Disappointed...I love the tabletop version of this game, but the incredibly unbalanced A.I in this version makes every mission a bad joke as you watch the enemies out roll you every time. Can't be bothered to continue the missions. Need to find something less frustrating to do....Version: 1.0

Super fun game but crashing issues destroys progressSpecifically on the defense against the Ravo's war band one, whenever a grotesque ability is used to recover their health if they kill an enemy. The game crashes and dumps your progress so you have to restart it. Happened to me three times in a row now and is unable to progress past it.Version: 1.2.2

Looks good, but...Very disappointed. A hard game is one that you have to think about, sometimes for quite some time. One where you have to work out how it is working then deliver a strategy that eventually wins. This game is not a hard game. It is a frustrating game. How well you do does not depend on any strategy or learning. The CPU always seems to have the luck both in rolls and cards. So where's the fun in a game that offers no chance of winning?.Version: 1.0
