Mansions of Madness for Negative User Reviews

Mansions of Madness - Gates are LockedI bought the second edition board game after hearing great things about this game. I installed this on my iPhone and IPad and even laptop, none of which work. Can't click new game! Have an expensive box sat there and awaiting a response from FFgames several weeks later. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone except someone I want to annoy. Poor app, poor support, poor company..Version: 1.3.8

Crashes instantly running VenturaWas one of my favorite games but after upgrading to MacOS Ventura is crashes on launch. Hope they consider fixing..Version: 1.8.8

Can’t open App IPhone 11Game won’t open. The game crashes when I see the FFG main screen. I deleted and redownloaded it and it still isn’t working..Version: 1.8.6

Worst app everI have the Second Edition and was so looking forward to playing it but I can’t get by the beginning. This app either reverts back to tile that I have to assume are the first addition (even though I have Second Edition enabled in the options) or it shows completely different investigators than I selected. I’ve restarted the game more than a dozen times and am now totally disheartened that I can never play this game. Please fix your app. So annoying!!!.Version: 1.6.0

Sound glitchWhere's our sound? Got the game, we're ready to play but there's no sound on the app?!.Version: 1.0.3

IPad Pro 11” where is the supportApp just updated for Horrific Journeys but still doesn’t support iPad Pro 11”.Version: 1.7.0

Wasted opportunityI only discovered lovecraft 2 years ago and in that time I have devoured all his writings and was still hungry for more. Naturally, when I discovered Fantasy Flight I jumped onto every Lovecraft product they have released to date. Mansions of Madness Second Ed. was supposed to be the perfect marriage between the tactile satisfaction of tabletop gaming and the technological efficiency of an application. I envisioned an app that would tend to the heavy lifting of card management, combat encounters, and most importantly, narrative progression. Unfortunately, FFG wasted this opportunity. The app is suitable for basic storytelling and game management. It gets you from the short intro to a fairly varied conclusion with few technical problems in between. The reason I consider this a missed opportunity is that with a little passion they could have leveraged the app for limitless immersion and variation within the meager selection of missions. For example, whenever you encounter a particular puzzle or locate a scenario related clue you typically just select one of a handful of item cards or even worse, you grab the circumstantial evidence card. A blood stained journal left behind by a mysterious protagonist? Oh look, the “evidence card”. A strange series of tracks in the mud that might lead you to the villain hidden among your comrades? Oh wait, just grab a clue token. Invaluable information passed on to you that could ahed light on the enigmatic note scribbled on the bathroom mirror? You guessed it...no notes to jot down for a later encounter, no critical information pertaining to a particular lock, not even an interesting detail that might aid an observant and savvy detective when the moment of truth arrives. Why go through all that trouble when you can simply use the “wild card” or the trusty clue token? The majority of play throughs typically involve searching for tokens or a few items. Take too long and get overwhelmed in combat. The narrative portions of the game seem almost superfluous. It is as though the designers figured that a few paragraphs of narration are all you need, and after a pile of clue tokens and dice rolls the tidy little conclusion provides the 10 seconds of framing for the experience. I wanted more! I wanted to find a journal on the floor in the study and actually have its words mean something to the outcome of the game. I wanted a good detective to bring a pencil and notepad and flip through important clues that may go unnoticed by less observant players. I didnt want to roll a die to see if the investigator “lucked” their way into a drawer; I wanted the drawer combination to be the birthday of the scientist’s wife. I wanted to discover that birthday on a card investigated in the kitchen. I wanted to pull out my scratch paper and recall the narrative clues to give me an edge in solving the mystery and escaping alive. I found that in my group of friends we were able to reach the same endings in missions without reading anything. We simply move, investigate, look for whatever symbol is being tested, and then guessing our way through the dismally repetitive puzzles. We noticed that too much emphasis was put on the “2nd Edition” in the name of the devs stuck too close to the ideas in the first edition, and by doing so they completely failed to reinvent the game as a completely independent creation. The app is so blatantly gimmicky that we agreed we would rather play without it if only there was an option to do so in the second edition. What the game was missing, first and foremost, was a writer who wasnt afraid to focus on the details in the messages strewn about the beautifully created environments. FFG wonderfully fleshes out the Lovecraftian universe in all their games, but in this specific iteration they seemed to forget that true money-spending fans dont buy the same rehashed products over and over for “new editions”. We throw our money at them because each detail they weave into the fantasy is another thread in the stories we use to escape from the real world. And unfortunately for us weekend investigators of the eldritch and enchanted, this particular foray provides little more than a tech-fueled attempt at innovation by a team that forgot the importance of “story” in a story-driven game. By leaning on the power of an app they could have easily imbued each and every detail of an investigation with limitless narrative. Instead, they opted to use an app for the bare basics of utility..Version: 1.4.2

WHAT IS RANGERange is defined with "range" everywhere. Such a bad game. Clearly no testing was done with people who didn’t know the game yet. The first scenario we get to the portal and the puzzle makes no sense and we die. Nothing in the whole house gives a clue what the puzzle means. I’m throwing this game away rather than selling so nobody else has to suffer through it..Version: 1.9.3

Well made app, great conceptLove this concept. But do wish they made it suitable for the iPhone 10+ range..Version: 1.8.6

Beta release.App should never have been released in it's present state. 1 update in and still crashing. Devs even saying that the save system doesn't work so scenarios should be played in one session....unbelievable. Why wasn't this game/app properly playtested. Edit 25/8/2016 2 updates later and had a save fail in the first scenario and according to BGG, other people are still having problems.Version: 1.0.3

Narrated text?App is pretty good, definitely take the game to the new level. I just wish all the tax was narrated with an actors voice. It would add so much more to the game instead of just reading countless screen text.Version: 1.6.0

Love the App but needs Chromecast support! Can Chromecast mirroring be enabled for this app on iOS? We need as many options as possible to get this on the big screen for a more inclusive game experience Otherwise it's a great concept.Version: 1.2.6

No sound on iPadWorks on iPhone fine but the graphics are hard to see and the sound doesn’t work on the iPad..Version: 1.8.0

Does not open on macOS (M1)Does not open open on macOS (M1), and on iPad, there are HUGE updates. We wanted to play, but we can't... So we need to pick a different game..Version: 1.8.8

Some of the sounds don't workI recently purchased the game and downloaded the app on my ipad 2 but the music, and the narration doesn't come out. I tried everything.Version: 1.2.2

Fun, but I can’t recommend. The game $100, with four scenarios. This would be fine, except that it seems to have three functional scenarios. Escape from Innsmouth is flat out broken. You get one chance to interact with Agent Craven. Then he locks the door and you can’t check again once you have more information. This makes the scenario unwinnable. The game doesn‘t bother telling you this, but you’ve lost. If you do convince him he vanishes with barely any hint where he went. You can find him again, and present the evidence. But you then have to get back to him to let him know the boat has arrived, with nary any hint you need to until you get to the boat without him. So you pay $100 for three functional scenarios and also Escape from Innsmouth..Version: 1.9.3

Fantastic concept but needs improvingI had the version 1 boardgame (no app required) and loved it SOOO much I had to have version 2! The artwork, gameplay and themes are out of this world! The use of the app is great and so inventive but as I have 4 games (version 1,2 plus 2 expansions) that’s four boxes of pieces I have to sift through DURING gameplay to place on the board. This is very time consuming when you just need an item card but have 4 sets of cards to look through it heavily affects the pace of the game. Please develop this app so it generates an inventory/item list at the beginning of the app so players can have pieces set aside before beginning the scenario. And please do this quickly as this truly is a 5 star game but just needs a tweak to get it there!.Version: 1.7.0

Cool game, poor valueBought this for my wife. Enjoyed playing it a couple times but EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the number of scenarios. There are only 4 scenarios which come with the $100 game (one of which is 4 hours long, much longer than we want to play) and then they want you to buy additional scenarios. Seems lame and a poor value especially when games like Betrayal on house on the hill had dozens of scenarios..Version: 1.6.0

App doesn’t work with path of the serpent expansionThe app doesn’t display any of the story or combat you need to know! Keep people aware of this so you don’t waste money and try to get the creators aware of this issue.Version: 1.8.6

Needs an undo button.Generally very good, but if you press the wrong button there’s no way to go back. It can ruin a game very easily. It should also confirm before you end the game..Version: 1.4.3

Custom ScenariosOnly 4 scenarios for the price and zero customization. For that price, you should at least be able to create your own scenarios to play..Version: 1.8.8

Can’t play half of the expansionsWish you would fix the text and info for the expansions as it is not working correctly :( Waste of buying the expansions as they are unplayable!.Version: 1.8.8

Good but Needs More NarrationApp functions fine. It is essentially a digital deck of cards that randomizes layout etc. Desperately needs added narration to increase immersion and decrease set up time..Version: 1.4.2

Crash IssueThis game is great! It is unfortunate that the app now crashes several times per gaming session. It is frustrating to restart & lose some details/turns after the crash even though the game state is saved. It is bad enough to keep this game on the shelf and play other options until the issue is resolved. :(.Version: 1.4.3

Doesn’t work with latest expansionHad this game for 3 years now and has worked fine with each expansions pack I’ve brought, however the latest one path of the serpent doesn’t display correctly missing all the combat data and story data you need to play the game..Version: 1.8.6

Great game. Needs an updateThis seems to be extremely choppy — near unplayable— with the latest iOS update on both iPhone 13 max pro and latest iPad mini.Version: 1.8.8

App doesn’t workLike previous review, app loads and gets to main page and can’t select new game and there is a spinning icon at the top left of the screen that doesn’t seem to do anything..Version: 1.8.6

Stop trying to downloadI can not play your game on my phone and everytime I download an app to my phone this game keeps trying to download on my phone. STOP YOUR GAME FROM DOING THIS 😡😡!! Btw I wouldn’t give it any stars if I didn’t have to!.Version: 1.8.6

Descriptions have dropped off?Recent update for bug fix seems to have replaced text descriptors for certain actions with what looks like a file name? Can no longer play the game properly as description text includes instructions to move forward.Version: 1.8.3

Sound issueI have an iPad 10.9 from 2017 and there is no sound ....Version: 1.8.4

No soundThe app doesn’t work on my Ipad. Why do I have the problem? I tried to install it several times but it didn’t work :(.Version: 1.7.4

Utterly rubbish, broken with 2nd DLC.The latest 12th. August 2017 update broke the game on my iPad Min iOS 9.0. Now I can't even play the board game. If you choose to use an app to make a board game, you need to be 100% sure that the app works, otherwise your customers are within their legal rights to ask for a refund for the board game, you need to fix this one quick, before this spreads on the forums and effects your revenue from app dependant games..Version: 1.3.8

Please add an undo button!App works, but needs an undo button desperately. This seems like an obvious feature, but apparently not. One misclick has completely altered the trajectory of some of our games, and there is no way to change it! Please fix this ASAP!.Version: 1.8.4

Will not run on M1 macI bought the core board game $125 and one expansion $80, A total of $200 CAD and now I can't play becuse I own an M1 mac the app that is *required* for the game will not run on my computer. Very dissapointed, compatibility says "runs on this MacBook Pro", but it does not. I have never even gotten to play once. :( PRO TIP: if you are thinking of buying MoM test this app first *before* you buy the boardgame..Version: 1.8.8

Narration lackingLove the game and the app definitely helps manage the board properly, one of the best features is the narratives introduction. Unfortunately there is 0 narration after that until the end of the game. Was hoping for a fully narrated experience..Version: 1.4.1
