✓ Works intermittentlyWhen it works right, this is a fantastic app. I run an instance of a man-in-the-middle proxy on one of my servers, and have rules which transform traffic passing through in order to defeat ads and tracking. With this app, I can send only the traffic I want to deal with, and not unduly slow my device. Unfortunately, this app stops working frequently. It constantly says “Weblock not installed” when in fact it is. It stops filtering arbitrarily until you manually restart the vpn. ✓ Isn’t useful after removing VPN method.I get that the devs were forced to revert to less effective proxy-based filters, but the great VPN method was this app’s whole value. Rather than quietly continue to sell it without discussion of the crippled status, they really should do the right thing and discontinue it and stop taking people’s money. There are many Safari adblocker apps that used to be inferior but now do a better, simpler job than Weblock. Clearly, only a small minority of people are interested in the effort required to make the cumbersome proxy-config method work. ✓ The current version doesn’t block ads. 😞I’d been happy with Weblock for several years, and even more so when it began blocking ads using VPN. No more futzing with proxies! Yay! The latest version, which removed VPN support, isn’t blocking ads, however. I’m having to see them for the first time in years, and they interfere with my using my newsreader. I’m hoping this is fixed ASAPer than ASAP, and will change my review to reflect the fix when it’s implemented. In the meantime, Weblock isn’t doing anything for me, and I’m trés sad. 😰 Two other bugs: Both the upper-left corner and the widget claim it’s not installed. When I tap “Settings,” it says it is. (This is a long-standing bug I shoulda reported before now.) I whitelisted a domain and accidentally left the option to whitelist its subdomains off. I can’t turn it on to save my life. I keep trying, but the change isn’t saved. I even tried deleting that rule and re-adding it, this time with subdomains enabled, but it STILL shows as “No.” This is maddening! ✓ Quit working in appsI have used Weblock for a couple of years and I was very happy with it. However, something has changed recently that prevents blocking ads within apps such as the New York Times app and Flipboard, in fact all in-app ads are now being displayed. It still works for Safari which seems odd. I emailed the developer, but they did not choose to respond. I tried redoing the auto proxy several times and verified that Block Content permissions in Settings was on. It’s a shame it no longer works as it was virtually 100% reliable in the past. ✓ Good, but for one issueThis thing is awesome. I’ve had it for years. The only annoying thing is when I’m searching for something on Google and it still shows the google ads, but prevents me from accessing them. To be clear, I can see the ad, but when I click on one, it stops me from being directed to the website I’m trying to get to. The best way to fight the ads is to disable 2 options in Safari: block cookies and block javascript. So sites will start to look much better. ✓ Outdated, Outperformed, yet not ObsoleteThis app was meant for the early 2010’s. Not by design, by functionality. Better apps that do more for free use up-to-date adblocking/anti-tracker lists and provide different DNS servers to use. This doesn’t. Only 39 filters for general ad servers and 28 for user tracking scripts. Not good. It does have a tab to manually add your domains, but you gotta do it painstakingly one by one. Now, I would’ve given this a one star if it wasn’t for this hidden gem. It has a feature better apps don’t have ( to my knowledge ). Adblocking through WiFi without the use of a DNS/VPN. Weblock can use a legacy “WiFi-only” mode where you change your connected WiFi’s HTTP proxy to Weblock’s. This has so much potential, and I have to give credit where credit is due to the developer(s). The HTTP proxy persists between multiple networks- meaning if you go to a new network, put in the proxy URL, disconnect and come back, it will still be on WeBlock. I hope they revamp this app with this feature with more benefits but judging by the last update, 2 years ago as of 2020, ( yikes ) I’d say it’s a fat chance..Version: 5.2
✓ Stops many apps and game from even functioning!This app seems like a great idea but I found on using on my iPad three blocked many games from functioning and many apps for working at all. Game of Thrones Accent will not even start at all with this app running, RT news app also does not load any content when this app is running. What good is an app that claims to block as if it kills half your applications. Customer support is not much better I reported this issue to them and they basically ignored me. ✓ Zero StarsAbsolutely ruined by misguided UI development. It used to be you could turn it on easily and you knew that’s what you were doing. I think the button was called Enable Weblock. Is there’s a proxy button on that turns itself back on as soon as you turn it off. And WiFi setting in the app remains active. Huh? What’s going on? In combination with copying the URL into the WiFi settings and toggling it on and off to load the url or unload by turning proxy off and saving, this should be easy. Even after doing so, Weblock still says Content Blocker is enabled! WOW, did they ever mess this up. So the way to turn it off is either totally obtuse or it’s to delete the app(?). ✓ Currently not Compatible w/ iOS 15I’ve been on iOS 15 since the public beta and it was one of the first things I noticed. Ads started showing up in apps and on Safari/Firefox and the widget just says “Unable to Load”. When it works, it does a phenomenal job at blocking ads and just making things overall so easy and hassle-free not having to deal with in-app ads and blocking webpage ads. ✓ Finally stopped working reliably in Dec 2023I’ve been using Weblock for years and years, and it’s always done a great job. But this week, several apps finally started to break through and show ads, most annoyingly Bored Panda, which throws up full-screen video ads at random in the app, and then begs you to whitelist it (to BP: This behavior is WHY we block ads!). I’ve contacted the developer, but given how long it’s been since this has been updated, I’m not expecting a fix. It still works in some apps, particularly games, so it’s not a total loss yet, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to start looking for an ad-blocking VPN now..Version: 5.3
