Norton Family Parental Control for Negative User Reviews

Total GarbageThis app is useless. I get notifications that my child’s computer hasn’t been used for 5 days when she is literally using it in front of me. Most valuable education websites are blocked as “Computer Hacking”? There is no mechanism to approve blocked websites in the app- you must go to the Norton website to approve, so of what use is the app? Norton clearly did not invest anything into this app..Version: 1.7.0

Don’t get it!Just blocks EVERYTHING!! Can’t get onto my sons homework sites. Driving me round the twist!!! Wish I’d never got it..Version: 1.1.1

Bug in the AppCan’t manage the accounts by the IOS app . It allways shut off the app and ask me to log on again..Version: 1.8.0

Poor appDifficult to navigate, basically a shell for a poor web site which doesn’t pass credentials so you have to log in with a password every time you use it. Alerts take forever to appear and it’s really hard to do even simple things like allow your child more time when they’ve used their allocation. Very disappointed with this product..Version: 1.2.2

Useless AppThis app has all or nothing functionality. I was able to keep my son from using all apps, but had no ability to allow him to request approval for apps or to use approved apps. At the end of the day, 100% restriction is not a workable construct and so this app seems pretty useless..Version: 1.10.0

Doesn’t work with iOS older than 10Beware, this app doesn’t work on devices with older iOS. We have 9.3.5 and it doesn’t work, but they don’t tell you that until you’ve already tried to install and use it. If you are like us and give your kids older devices - not the newest, fanciest ones - you’ll need to find another product to use..Version: 1.2.1

Great Concept, Horrible PerformanceI hoped this would be a great aid to look after and protect my 11 & 14 year old, one of whom is disabled. The app is a nightmare to install and configure properly, and if you get it running it will slow the internet connection by about 66%. Very disappointing performance. I certainly hope they improve the prod, it is greatly needed in these sick times..Version: 1.0.5

App difficult to navigateWhy can’t the app do everything? And half the time my kids request more time, I approve it and it doesn’t work on the computer. So frustrating!.Version: 1.2.4

Invasive, Limited & ComplicatedSome functions re-arrange my child’s app screen each night. Does not integrate cleanly with iOS. And, dos not appear to be very intuitive from the get-go - requiring too much time-consuming, self-help research. Norton seems to be trying to be “everything to everybody”, and so ends up being very mediocre..Version: 1.11.0

Too buggyI have a reasonable IT knowledge. I can only get on device to work consistently. The iPhone often don’t work and it allows the kids outside of their times. A laptop wouldn’t work at all as it stopped all browsing. So going to be asking for money back..Version: 1.4.4

Not easy to useThe functionality of the app is limited. When you click on the child’s name, it sends you to a screen of the website. Why? I don’t know but I expect to do everything within the app. But, then when you try to use the website via the app, it doesn’t work! You can’t scroll down to get to all the options - such as changing the hours allowed on a device. I’ve tried this both on iPhone and iPad..Version: 1.0.4

Good, missing some featuresWe have this and Family Link running on our kids phone. Just about dropped this altogether, but family link didn’t lock out running apps and other things. This app, however, doesn’t show when device is locked (outside log/alerts) and doesn’t provide per-app time limits..Version: 1.1.1

Screen time limits constantly malfunctionI keep getting messages from Norton saying your child has changed the time in the computer (not true) and also that his screen time limit has been reached hours short of when it should expire. It is very frustrating to have to manually extend when it shouldn’t be necessary if it worked properly..Version: 1.0.5

FrustratingTime limits and curfews are not working as I’ve set them up. Very frustrating..Version: 1.3.1

Doesn’t support ISO and iPhone appNot happy to see it doesn’t support iphone.Version: 1.4.4

Main feature for parenting control missingI would expect the mobile app to allow me as a parent to approve ‘website access requested’ notifications from my child when she user her laptop. I can see the notifications showing up in the app however there is no option to allow/decline the access via the mobile app, i am having to login to norton family via a browser and then respond to her requests. Can the product be enhanced to enable this option via the mobile app..Version: 1.4.1

I don’t like this appI’m a kid and I don’t like this app because my parents always block laptop when I am trying to do something on it witch is really annoying. I wish this app didn’t exist and I would give it 0 stars if I could..Version: 1.4.5

Norron FamilyThe Norton Family app never works!! Is really good tool on the desktop, but not on the phone. Some times my son ask me for more screen time or to visit an specific website and I can’t access the application onmy phone..Version: 1.2.7

How unlock ? Not foundCannot find how to unlock account.Version: 1.2.4

Not badIt’s ok.Version: 1.1.1

Doesn’t even know why it is doingFamily control is not a simple app. I have a license for 5 devices and Norton can’t keep track of them. Follow the instructions (while I’m no IT guru, I’ve been doing computers and such for 40 years so I have some experience and savvy) and it doesn’t recognize the device. Set up controls for a child and they don’t work, kid is still using the device long after allowed hours are over and long after curfew. Can’t set hours for second kid because the choose number of hours function is not there (but it is for the other kid). Honestly, If it didn’t come as part of the LifeLock pack, it would be long gone..Version: 1.3.1

OkayLots of glitches, and doesn’t work consistently on different windows platforms. Also, it doesn’t allow your computer to self update for time change. We moved states, and it took forever to get it to change. Even the help line on norton couldn’t assist me. This product needs more thought put into it for easy changes. I also would like the feature to block add ons to the web browser. Children can add inappropriate games to the browser tab bypassing the monitoring of this program. The limiting of General types of websites is useful. The thing I do like is the phone app which allows quick lock of computer. Overall fairly useful but could be much better given other programs from this company..Version: 1.1.1

Not Consistently UseableThis app is frustrating as a parent. I am not able to approve more time from the app. The app will state there is too much activity and not allow me to log on. I must turn off wifi and then log in through the website. This is frustrating when my child has a project and needs more time. I’ve also had times where I have approved more time (through the website) and this is not communicated to my child’s device. I would suggest looking at a different app for monitoring your child..Version: 1.7.6

If you want your child to have depression use this app.My dad installed this app on my giving barely any time on it. Because of this app I was unable to talk to my friends from primary ending to loss of friendship as we were no longer able to communicate. The app was one of the reasons for my childhood depression. Do not recommend..Version: 1.6.1

Time inaccuraciesThis app needs improvement. The time shown versus what the devise shows versus actual is always way off. The app shows 1/2 hour used today. The devise says 11 min left of the two hours. Actual time is only 1 hour and 20 min..Version: 1.2.4

App is ok, Norton family has flaws my kids exploitMy kids change the time on the pc to get around curfew. Installing on their tablets is a nightmare. And when they try to sign in during curfew hours Norton gives them 30 seconds... so they just log in over and over to get a few bits of time..Version: 1.0.5

Delete all apps so child is safe?!?Delete safari, Snapchat, email…Don’t need Norton for that. Then uninstalling is a nightmare and I’m told they will call in 24-72 hours and my child has an unusable phone. Do not recommend..Version: 1.7.0

AwfulDifficult to set up, deleted it after a few wasted hours sending emails here and then to down load various links. Not at all intuitive, Norton you need to be better. This was not at all good..Version: 1.3.2

Creates more problems than it solves - buy something elseSince buying Family, my son’s Lenovo laptop won’t stay in sleep mode and therefore all his allocated time is used up every night, or while at school. The App won’t allow me to just give in and allow 24 hours of usage as a workaround. No solutions provided by Norton online. Also, the App is very slow to use, not intuitive and constantly requires logging in, all the while the kids it’s supposed to be managing are furious and yelling at me, due to Norton’s failings. It’s created more problems than it has solved. I wish I could get a refund and move on to a better product. Don’t waste your hard earned money to buy a headache..Version: 1.5.0

Clunky interfaceOverall this allows me to monitor my child online, especially with kids home doing schooling during COVID pandemic. However, it is difficult to manage sites my child can/can’t access. Just bit user friendly to allow certain sites that are ok in a banned category. Also, very frustrating Norton Family cannot monitor MS Edge..Version: 1.2.7

Nothing in the appI have children and they show up on the web version but not in the app. I’ve tried everything and nothing shows but when I try to add my kids in the app it says the kid already has a profile. I even get alerts for each kid but click on the alert only to be taken to an empty app. Waste of money..Version: 1.7.0

It does not workNorton Family does not work on iOS. Monitoring kids is a nightmare, the app does what it wants, just not protecting anything on the device. The makers will say that these are restrictions from iOS. This might well be, but then don’t have such a useless app in the AppStore.Version: 1.7.0

Could be so much betterHad this for several months and with the Norton name behind it, it should be so much better than it is. The app isn’t intuitive to use and I find tracking is poor. Also my child can turn off location services from their Huawei phone!! I get more help with a well known search engine’s reciprocal link, and that only really works with Wi-Fi nearby..Version: 1.6.1

Doesn’t do what it saysHard to navigate program and set up. Kids can turn off security with just a click, no parental password. Site that you have blocked are still coming up. No time limit controls..Version: 1.4.4

Low priority app for NortonThis could be high functioning and useful but it is low priority for Norton. Updates usually only come every 2-3 months. That tells you they don’t keep up with it and it just doesn’t work as well as they claim for parental monitoring..Version: 1.1.1

Just So TerribleIt limits my child’s laptop during the school time even learning materials. Only way is to not use Norton at all… I feel I wasted money on Norton..Version: 1.11.0

Poor supportNot as granular as one would hope, had to remove it for the device to function properly.Version: 1.1.1

Good but not responsiveIt is really good when supervision is on but not quick response when you want to take it off.Version: 1.4.1

ClunkyFunctionality in general is clunky and unresponsive. Not intuitive enough. Bugs in logging in procedure for parent. Plus other things….. Needs more uat and bug fixing and on overhaul of the ui.Version: 1.7.1

DataMy son can turn his data off and the App does not work There should be a way to stop this.Version: 1.2.7

To my 11 year old less than a week to get around this.Don’t buy this..Version: 1.6.1

App is pointlessDoesn’t support Face ID, everything you do loads their website which is not user friendly on mobile. When my children request more time, the app doesn’t allow you to grant or deny the requested time..Version: 1.10.0

DreadfulI tried setting this up on my daughter’s phone for hours. Every time, it said that the profile had been set up on my daughter’s phone, but at my end it would not recognise that there were any devices in her name..Version: 1.1.1

Very disappointed and time wastingRepeated errors and bugs with child device VPN. I am done, Norton Family..Version: 1.1.0

Uselessly complicatedIt should be easy to install, but it is so fiddly that makes it difficult to install.Version: 1.5.0

The worstWhen my child was doing homework most of his apps including chrome could not been seen or used so I had to delete the app and turn restrictions ever.Version: 1.7.2

Supervision can be easily turned off in child deviceI realised my child can easily turn off Norton Family supervision in settings by not allowing it to appear on top of other apps. It makes Norton completely useless. Norton kept sending me messages that supervision over other apps was turned off on child device but no explanation what that meant. It took me forever to find out what happened..Version: 1.7.2

Just okI do like the instant lock functions but my kids only have iPads and the content I’d like more control over doesn’t function in that iPad space. Additionally it’s hard to navigate what I’m actually locking in. For example my son has safari on his iPad but my daughter doesn’t and they have the same restrictions. Just annoying..Version: 1.1.1

Time ReportingThe time stamp that Norton uses to report an activity on my child’s device was inaccurate..Version: 1.4.1

Ok but so much ch could be betterLimited set of restrictions..Version: 1.2.7

App is terribleNorton app is terrible it’s supposed to protect my children but it’s let my 8 year old be on the internet for 6 hours today and now only just taken her app off her.Version: 1.2.4

Lost access to appsWorked well for the first few hours then all of a sudden all my sons apps disappeared and he was extremely upset. I allowed all of his apps when I set it up so no idea why this happened. I had to remove the management from his phone to get them back and even then he had to reorganise them all and put them back in the folders which frustrated him. The main thing I don’t want him accessing is adult websites. So My best bet is to just get something for my wifi to keep him off certain websites..Version: 1.6.0

Flat Out Doesn’t WorkVery unhappy with the Norton Family app, can’t recommend to anyone. No text monitoring, a clunky interface that is part app and part website, tons of erroneous reports about my kids turning off various features, locations that sometimes don’t work... look elsewhere..Version: 1.1.0

Disastrous app! Confusing! The app is awful to use. It is not intuitive at all and the functionality works part of the time. The “lock” feature never works. There are significant delays in receiving an email alert when my child asks for more time so I always have to go to his computer, log into the norton family app, and give him more time. This app needs a lot more work to make it even mildly useful. The positive reviews were obviously written by Norton employees. I think the app is currently free which reflects the awful functionality. I would never pay for this app unless significantly improved..Version: 1.3.2

Great in concept but kids work around it.I cant seem to stop the kids doing what they want. Norton fails to prevent kids from downloading software and playing games despite the controls you put in place. They can work incognito and overcome any blocks when in Chrome. I even try uninstalling chrome but it can easily be restated. The blocked websites can also be overcome when a lower level web address extension is selected. Eg. Roblox/home. Norton could learn from Apple family sharing controls..Version: 1.3.2

Not GreatThe app is really just a link to a clunky website that is hard to navigate. The parent app and kids app is difficult to set up. Help is hard to find online. I probably will not renew. Repeated warnings from kids phones that they opened all”social” apps, when they in fact did not. I tested it myself. Very rigid restrictions that are not realistic..Version: 1.2.7

Somewhat helpfulThis app is okay. You can only control total electronic time though which I find annoying. I want to be able to limit game time (certain apps) but would like for my kids to be able to read (use the Libby app) for a much longer time. You cannot do that on this app. Googles Family Link allows you to do that and I love it but my older son has aged out that and we need to find something for him. This isn’t working though. I would like for the phone to be able to make a phone call to me no matter how much electronic time has been used rather than locking him out. I do like that it warns out visiting webpages..Version: 1.7.2

Parental control does not work properlyThe kids are still able to bypass the website and app bans on their Win10 pcs. despite several requests, Norton’s technical team could not manage the problem..Version: 1.7.5

Could be betterAs another reviewer said, once you enter the child’s profile it locks and you can’t scroll. I found going to alerts them back again solves the problem - but a bit of a pain. It’s great to have instant access to lock devices, but a shame the that the rest is just opening the website in the app (it keeps telling me to get the app, when that’s where I’ve come from!) Not app specific, but this would be so much better as a parental tool if we could apply a total time allowed time across all devices. If I want my child to have total 2 hours on phone or PC but I don’t mind how they spread that time across those devices I can’t do that. I can either allow 2 hours on each (which total 4 hours) or 1 hour on each which doesn’t give them any flexibility and results in me having to lock/ unlock or constantly change the setting, which is bit of a pain with 3 children and access to 2 devices each!.Version: 1.0.4

Do not download this appThis app is terrible. It has deleted all my apps, contacts and removed the camera app. What’s even worse is that I can’t get any of these back. Terrible app, do not install!.Version: 1.4.4

Just got even worse - can i give no stars? The problem really is that there is no support service. When you really need support they let you down. Everything failed on subscription renewal and the online chat told me that I had to wait 7-10 days for a qualified agent to deal with my problem. In the mean time service doesn't work. Thoroughly disappointing. Update is now I've been waiting a month and I have just been told that it will.take another 7-10 working days. Lots of apologies when you contact them but their 'senior support team' seems to have nobody in it..Version: 1.3.1

Too frustratingNot user friendly and very frustrating. Sim is set to access during school time but it won’t connect in school time.Version: 1.7.2

This app is responsible for depressionEver since my friend was forced to have this app on their phone they became depressed. they wouldn’t eat 🥘 , drink 💦 , shower 🚿, or use the toilet 🚽The only thing that kept them at peace was listening to music but guess what. it got taken away every night. even on winter break. this app needs to be illegal and biden needs to ban it from america. biden save my friend from their depression. 🤟🏻✊.Version: 1.6.0

Works, but high learning curveOnce you get it setup and through the learning curve (about 6 months), it’s ok. It’s a bit too restrictive and sensitive at default ages/settings. Can be difficult to figure out blocking and allowing individual sites. After about a year we are finally figuring it out. I almost want to recommend just using the built in Microsoft Family app, it’s way easier and intuitive. This works, though, and I feel confident with the Norton brand and security..Version: 1.7.2

Full of bugsFull of bugs.Version: 1.4.3

LimitedWhilst set up with good intentions, the companion app that is required to be installed on the device to be restricted rearranges screen apps and ignores folder arrangements. Whilst this is apparently a restriction imposed by Apple, it critically limits the function of the app..Version: 1.7.1

App approvalThe feature that once allowed parents to approve more time from the app is no longer available, why is that? I now have to approve everything from the device itself. Can that feature be added back thru the app?.Version: 1.4.4

Norton Family AppReally difficult to use. Frequent glitches. Customer support not forthcoming..Version: 1.7.5

The idea is good...if it would workI’ve been trying to get this installed on our two laptops, desktop, two tablets and two smartphones. I have been trying for days to get it on the non-mobile devices. I can send a link in an email, but selecting the link opens a tab that never loads the download link..Version: 1.1.1

TrashLocation services doesn’t work, my daughter can’t do anything without getting blocked, you can’t use Safari, it’s rocket science to install on kid’s managed devices vs the parent devices. It’s used to be better. I had to uninstall it, will be looking for a replacement both for antivirus and this..Version: 1.6.0

Notifications .I hate the fact that when our phones come off from screen time thing, our notifications are off. Can y’all change that because it is frustrating to keep turning them in and off, on iOS devices. I have to keep deleting apps just to get notifications back on. It doesn’t work in my settings . So if y’all could change that it would make it a lot better ..Version: 1.4.0

This people don’t have childrenThis is the most no. User friendly program ever, the school lock is impossible to set up on my phone, it takes me 5 min. Every action takes so long that I forget to do it.Version: 1.4.1

Sometimes doesn’t workSometimes the app works great. Sometimes it does absolutely nothing when you’ve been logged in for several days. It doesn’t even allow you to log out and try again..Version: 1.1.0

RubbishFollowing a trial this was purchased for child’s phone, 3 months later phone became unsupported and app no longer works. No partial refund offered. Waste of money..Version: 1.7.6

Zero Stars wasn’t an optionI’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to resolve issues with Support - the Bot takes you round in circles. I paid for the subscription weeks ago and it’s not set up properly yet. Apps get wiped off my device and are then made available. I can’t connect to my child’s device. I’m looking for other options.Version: 1.7.3

Crashes on startLatest update won’t even open without crashing on iPhone XR updated to latest iOS. 1/7 update - deleted app altogether and reinstalled then was able to access.Version: 1.2.0

Not a good solution for IOS iPhonesChild phone apps randomly disappear, even when no time restrictions. Wouldn’t com back until Norton profile deleted. Then apps came back but all rearranged. Really Norton should warn people. Not a good solution, frustrating both parents and child..Version: 1.6.1

Can’t remove subscriptionI tried installing this but it won’t Work on my sons Huawei. Now it won’t let me cancel the free month trial which is super frustrating, click on the link and nothing happens and there is no person to email and contact. Do not download this..Version: 1.2.3

Consistently does not work as shouldAs above.Version: 1.6.1

Location services disables automaticallyI appreciate this app for the ability to set and change house rules, block certain websites, and know where my child's is. I am frustrated by the fact that location services keep turning off somehow on both devices. This never happened before with a different monitoring app. And it happens when no one is using the phone or tablet. A smaller issue is that there is no way to lock devices separately. The only option is to lock all of one child's devices. Now I'm in a situation where the morning of a day my child's phone was stolen, the location services were disabled, so I can't locate the phone. And I can't lock it without also locking my child's tablet which she can also use to communicate..Version: 1.1.1

Does not work wellI am rarely able to get this app to complete an activity. The kids ask for more time, I keep getting the unable to process, try again message. Try to adjust their time/settings - cannot connect. Easier to use the website or software on their computers. Disappointed in the capability of this app!!.Version: 1.3.2
