Times Puzzles for Negative User Reviews

BrokenBrain training on iPad is broken. It keeps showing the same puzzle for each day and the answer is always wrong also. The developers need to fix it.Version: 1.5.0

Grim Experience with External KeyboardThe app ignores any external keyboard and insists on displaying the on-screen one when it expects input. I have reported this and they say they’ll fix it. But there’s a deeper problem: the external keyboard often doesn’t work at all. This is not compatible with my use case so I deleted the app and unsubscribed..Version: 1.1.0

Another half baked updateAnyone who uses this regularly knows that the sudoku interface is woeful. Whereas the Polygon interface was reasonable. So what do the developers do…they wreck the polygon and leave sudoku… Clunky, you can no longer see all the words you’ve solved with scrolling. It isn’t obvious whether you’ve got the last word in the list… Bonkers!.Version: 2.0.1

Not the full set of puzzlesThis app offers only a subset of puzzles. The Times have made a real mess of their apps. The Classic version does not offer up most of the puzzles. The new version offers up all of the puzzles but does not keep the history. The Puzzles app does not have all of the puzzles. What a mess. Please sort this out..Version: 1.3.0

Works okay for meOnly use crosswords but it works okay for me. The only bug I’ve encountered is that completed crosswords don’t mark as such on my iPhone 12. The filter doesn’t work as a result. I would find it useful to filter by type. The custom keyboard is an interesting design choice. I find it makes the keys a bit small to hit..Version: 2.0.1

Can’t even try it outApple really need to sort out the way subscription games are advertised. This is not free. it requires you to subscribe- there is a 7 day period during which you can cancel. i didn’t, i just deleted the app. waste of time.Version: 1.4.0

Doesn’t work at all since last updateUsed to enjoy access to the puzzles this way but since the last update the app no longer loads. It bombs right out after less than a second. Hoping it will be fixed soon..Version: 2.0.1

Used to be good, now total rubbishAs per the title. Used to save your progress and time how long it took to complete the puzzles. Recently I removed and tried to reinstall the app and it just stopped working! Shame as it was good and saved me money as the times is just too expensive to buy now..Version: 1.5.0

It’s okayIt has the same disadvantages of the puzzles in the Times app. If you want to make notes, you have to switch to that format and it’s a nuisance to go back and forth. It would be far better to have two sets of numbers, one for final and the other for possibilities, as I have in other number puzzle apps (check out Puzzle Page to see what I mean). Also, why not include the codeword? I wrote to the Times three or more years ago about it and was fobbed off. It’s in the iPad version and there’s no reason not to have it on the phone app. In other respects it’s all right. If you don’t read The Times but would like to have its crossword, it’s worth subscribing..Version: 1.4.0

Brain train doesn’t workSudoko and xwords are good but the brain train is the same puzzle every day but with different incorrect answers!.Version: 1.5.0

Loses input on closing - VERY annoyingYou lose whatever you’ve entered when you hit the X (close) button. As the X is right next to the options … button, I’ve ‘accidentally’ closed down mid-puzzle many times. It wasn’t like this until recently. I’ve checked I have the current version..Version: 1.5.0

Simple App - Poor executionShould be a very straightforward app to build - but many problems. Puzzles take forever to load - and regularly fail to do so. Puzzles show as in progress even though they are complete. Such a good idea and simple to build compared to most other apps - I would start again!.Version: 1.5.0

What’s wrong?Used to enjoy using the app but for the last couple of months is refusing to load, just flashing up and closing again. Very frustrating, do you have a technical problem? Been going on for months now, the response from app support was that they had no record of this happening, you only have to look through the reviews to see that statement is an absolute lie. If the problem is not resolved I will be cancelling my Times newspaper/online subscription and heading back to the Telegraph!.Version: 2.0.1

Great puzzles, when the app works. My iPhone refuses to display several of the puzzles correctly, sometimes an almost blank screen, sometimes the very bottom of a puzzle at the top of the screen. My iPad was much better but it has started recently to clear a puzzle when it is closed rather than remember the progress already made. Both items are modern and are running the latest software..Version: 2.0.1

Don’t botherDon’t bother downloading. Definitely don’t bother paying to subscribe. The Times has not bothered to create a functioning app. The interface is HORRIBLE. Keyboard too small. Half the time, the keyboard doesn’t work, making word entries painful. The design is aesthetically outdated, but that’s not as bad as the lack of usability. Enraging when you press things and nothing happens. Also very slow to load… does the Times not have any developers or something? It’s such a bloody shame… I downloaded this because I like the NYT puzzle app. It is easy to use, things works as expected, nice stats, looks nice too. But the puzzles have American facts and spellings… so I came here. What a mistake… so disappointing. NYT puzzle app is £1 cheaper … do yourself a favour… download that instead..Version: 2.0.1

App doesn’t work!Subscribed via App Store for £6.99 and the app just opens to a “something went wrong page” Reinstalled the app and the same happens. Reinstalled the app again and was asked to re-subscribe for £4.99…? Subscribed again and got “something went wrong page”! Reinstalled again and was asked to re-subscribe for £3.99…?…yes £3.99!!!! Tried to contact support… Lost the will to live! I now have 3 separate subscriptions on a weeks trial for 3 different prices with one app that doesn’t open!.Version: 1.4.0

TerribleClosing a puzzle loses everything you’ve done in that puzzle. Also, too easy to close a puzzle accidentally. In addition, Suko puzzle no longer works on my phone- I’m guessing it might work on a phone with a bigger screen Very disappointing.Version: 2.0.1

I used to do this every dayThis used to be brilliant until it stopped saving progress. To complete a puzzle you now have to memorise it. As as soon as you leave it resets. You can’t print so now I have reverted to books of historical puzzles Please fix and don’t pay for it until they do.Version: 1.5.0

BrokenApart from the annoying forgetting word break setting bug (is it on or is it off? Who knows?) this app has stoped working completely on my iPad and iPhone, from about 2 weeks ago. Glad I’m not paying for a subscription or anything..Version: 2.0.1

Please fix this app1. Kakuro doesn’t load 9 times out of 10 2. If it does load then the grid lines on the right are missing 3. If you leave a puzzle to come back later, all answers are blanked out and you have to start again 4. There’s no consistent user experience between puzzles. Kakuro (when it loads) has a good pen/pencil interchange for answers/notes, but sudoku has a different way and is impossible to use if standing on a tube trying to do he puzzle. Please make it consistent with Kakuro. 5. Polygon is just annoying the way it now hides the answers It seems as though you let interns loose on the app every year and that changes are introduced that are not tested for usability or user experience..Version: 2.0.1

Great but…It’s great to have all the puzzle in one place at a sensible price, but the timer on the crosswords stopped working a few weeks ago and it hasn’t been fixed yet (when you complete a cross word it says time NaN NaN and doesn’t record as having been completed. I am writing this on here as there is no support function!.Version: 1.5.0

Won’t open.Excellent puzzles. Awful app. When it would open, no sync across devices. On iPad crashes on opening every time. Hard restarted, updated, reinstalled, nothing works..Version: 2.0.1

Flawed [but a revamp on the way?}Well, in Mar 2024 they are working on something. Hopefully it will fix: - Completed Crosswords still show as ‘In Progress’ on the Crosswords navigation page. - No access to the 30 The Times articles they advertised. - Timers run on Crosswords even if you close the app, have a snooze, go on holiday. Only way out is to complete the crossword [and if you forget, you have to go back in to see the ‘Congratulations’ message]. My longest time is 7 hrs 42mins [I went out for the day]. - the crossword show-word-break switch is really a toggle switch, default is off, no matter what position you have the switch at in settings in the app. Each time you go in you have to toggle this to see word breaks. But, the rest is excellent and I enjoy The Times Crossword and other puzzles every day..Version: 2.0.1

FrustratingWhilst it is useful to have all of the puzzles in one place (stand fast the Samurai Sudoku) it is extremely frustrating that when puzzles are closed any answers are deleted. This means that any puzzle has to be finished once started, which is not always possible - especially with the Jumbo puzzles. If this issue could be resolved the app would be a minimum 4 star..Version: 1.5.0

Bugs and more bugsWhile I really enjoy this app very recently a series of bugs have appeared. The timer now shows NaN (not a number) on completion of a crossword. The crossword is not shown as complete in the history, it’s a shame as this was fixed for a while. Multi word answers now no longer show dividers even though this is turned on, this had worked previously. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the app to no avail as the same regressions still appear..Version: 1.5.0

Misleading AdvertThe advert I followed said this was free. What they actually meant was that the App free. To get past the start-up screen, you have to agree to a £6.99 monthly subscription. If you do that, then you get a 1week free trial. You certainly can cancel with no charge within a week. But that, to me, is very different to a simple ‘free’. I have deleted the app..Version: 1.4.0

Quite poor quality for a subscription appAs others have reported here, on later iPhones the keyboard is really poor, constantly changing your selection or misfiring as it’s too close to the bottom of the screen. The crossword typing is far too slow and you constantly miss letters. A lot of the time you complete a puzzle and it doesn’t get marked as completed. Considering this is a subscription-based app from a reputable source it’s pretty poor..Version: 1.5.0

Bare minimum appGreat content but it seems like the app is very sparingly supported. Finished crosswords don't show up correctly & there is no Apple Pencil support for crosswords! Please add apple support! Give this some love - hard to justify the price.Version: 1.5.0

KlunkyIt’s OK, but it is really annoying to have no simple way of changing to “note mode”. The button to switch to note mode should be on the same screen as the puzzle..Version: 1.4.0

Needs urgent attentionFor the last two weeks this app has struggled. Firstly I had to close the phone and reopen - then I had to delete the app and reload. But now, even after reloading, it just flashes on and then off. Please get it sorted.Version: 2.0.1

What happened!?!This used to be a fab app - the keyboard was a bit annoying, but the puzzles good enough to make up for it. Recently, however, it’s stopped saving progress. If you switch to another puzzle or leave the app it forgets everything. Even leaving a puzzle open in the background doesn’t work. Totally unusable, and no sign of any response to loads of similar reviews. Time to unsubscribe, I think..Version: 1.5.0

Good but a few annoyancesClean, simple app and loads of challenging puzzles, which is really the main thing I want. However the app's own keyboard is smaller than the system keyboard, and supremely annoying. And perhaps the worst part, which I hope will be fixed soon, is that completed puzzles don't show as completed!.Version: 1.4.0

App crashesAs soon as I log in with my Times subscription the app crashes. Tried deleting and downloading again from the App Store and the app crashes on opening - not even getting to the login screen. I’m on the latest version of IOS, the problem is with the app..Version: 2.0.1

App STILL doesn’t work properlyI must confess to being disappointed in this app. It works after a fashion, but there are bugs which are very irritating. When you complete a crossword you just get NaN and the puzzle doesn’t complete. It stays as ‘in progress’. I notice from other reviews that this problem has been around for some time. Completion of a sudoku puzzle works correctly. Also the Apple Pencil only partly works. It doesn’t work within the grid. For a subscription app it is very poor. Please sort it out..Version: 1.5.0

Puzzles good, operation poorAnother issue with the new design for Polygon. The faint lines under where the word appear are indistinguishable from the bottom of the edge of the box containing the words. The designer of this ‘new improved version’ clearly is not into function.Version: 2.0.1

Doesn’t work at all - complete rubbishUpdate 25 June. Yet another month and still doesn’t work. Wht a load of junk. Great advert for what is supposed (ha, ha) to be UK leading newspaper. Update two months later … 25 May and still doesn’t work. App support is dreadful, no replies in two months. To makes matters worse the other two Times apps (Times Live and Times Classic) which allow you to download some of the puzzles have been revamped and are also now bombing out left, right and centre, either mostly just closing immediately on opening the puzzles or at random times thereafter or giving silly messages like “unable to load puzzles when not online” when there is a perfectly good WiFi connection. New release 2.0.1 out 16 March does not work at all on any of my iOS devices and same on my wife’s. Bombs straight out within a second of opening. Followed all their suggestions, restarted, reloaded, checked memory, got latest iOS etc. Nothing works, and all I can get from their help mail address is an automated response asking for the problem / device information I’ve given them countless times. App useless. Support useless. Subscription being cancelled. Wish I could give zero stars..Version: 2.0.1

Would be great to see a response from the developers……to all the other negative reviews about loss of progress, not showing puzzles completed and having to delete and reinstall repeatedly (so losing all previously started/completed history) - all of which I have been experiencing for months. Suggest you make it free until it’s actually worth paying for?.Version: 1.5.0

Fix for a nasty problemI have been playing for a long time. At first you could see all your completed puzzles and part-finished ones. So, accidentally closing a puzzle wasn’t a big problem. But for some time it has been clearing all my entries so that, although it showed a puzzle as completed or part done, when I reopened the puzzle it was completely unstarted. I found that the only way to get back to being able to see part- or fully solved puzzles was to fully delete the app and reinstall it. This means I have lost anything I had done before but at least I can now do a puzzle in more than one session. What was particularly annoying was that the menu button is so close to the exit button that it is far too easy to accidentally close a puzzle when you just want to select an option. When this happens you have to restart the puzzle. Update Dec 2022:Reloading the app fixed the problem of it not remembering your partly or completely solved puzzles for several months. But it has come back so I’ll try yet again reinstalling it. All other annoyances described by me and others remain. It truly is a disgrace to The Times..Version: 1.5.0

Crashes on launchAs of today, 26th Sept 2023, this app has started crashing more or less instantly whenever I launch it. Not good, please fix ASAP. Also need a way to see solutions to previous week's prize/weekend crosswords..Version: 2.0.1

A Bug’s LifeAs at 17 Apr 2024 the puzzles which are completed are now finally showing 'complete' on the puzzle list. But every single puzzle has reset when you re-enter, so you can't actually see how you completed it. Partially-completed puzzles also reset when you try to continue. It's a move forward from the developer, but still leaves a frustrating experience that has been (literally) years in the fixing. Developer did send a ‘response’ asking for contact, but gave no way to contact them apart from a generic FAQ page for the Times App - this seemed half-hearted and only strengthened my frustration. Glad to have iPad because I find the iPhone edition difficult to use. Use daily, but in these more frugal times, online subscriptions come under greater scrutiny. This subscription is on the hit-list of those to possibly lapse - simply because of the bugs..Version: 2.0.1
