Alto's Odyssey — Remastered for Negative User Reviews

The app crashes on all operating systemsI've been able to play the game for about a week, but now it crashes on startup on macOS, iOS and tvOS. Very disappointed....Version: 1.1.1

I adore this game butLike a lot of games they get too zealous with the progression and in game currency. You get the compass for 4000 coins but it doesn’t tell you that to use it you need 1000 coins…EVERY TIME. And seriously it takes a ridiculous amount of time to progress past level 20 some…i love your game but there is life too. So it becomes frustrating and not fun. The mechanics and visuals, amazing! But weeks to get a character, 1 star..Version: 1.1.2

Amazing game but…This game is incredible, stunning and addicting! But There’s currently one massive problem that I have tried to fix in many ways but it just doesn’t work. I have done everything possible to try and save my progression but it never works so you have to start the game from scratch every time you play you lose all your items and coins. It’s really hard to play again knowing you have to start from nothing so until this is fixed I can only give it one star, if this gets fixed I’d be more then happy to give it 5 stars as the game itself is a delight to play!.Version: 1.1.0

So disappointed, I thought I could finally playI was really looking forward to this being available on Arcade so I could play on my MacBook or Apple TV. The screen on my phone is too small to see the details of this game since I am vision impared. But they've made the bizarre decision to have some of the game take place at "night" which makes the game completely unplayable for anyone with vision imparement. That seems like an easy thing to avoid doing. It seems like a switch allowing for an all-daytime mode for accessibility would be a pretty normal add. It seems like a WONDERFUL game! I wish I could play along....Version: 1.1.0

It’s okay but so much the sameFor how much tine it’s been since altos odd. I feel like maybe the chance to do new tricks like flip forward instead of just backwards by splitting the screen press points would be awesome.. new world design like let’s say perhaps instead of just ridding a bumpy wall you could jump into the clouds and surf through like space or time riding some stars .. maybe board upgrades.. new characters.. new worlds like not just desert and water sliding.. say dense jungle and then winter.. or even garbage mounts.. ocean? So many cool things to apply the smooth controls of this game too yet more of the same. The Apple App Store has far too little games that don’t require you keep punching in giant amounts of money.. and is also limited (IMO) in the truly good games area. Card games bleh. Platform games heck yes! Don’t get me wrong there are gems.. but the gems have long been here without much new. The Apple Arcade.. it’s pretty okay.. hope it gets better. Anyhow, really hope the developers create another alto or like 5 more altos just with new ideas man.. I like the hidden city.. was very easy to get map pieces and ride through it.. the ride through it wasn’t epic..Version: 1.1.0

Looks stunning but does not syncThe promise of Apple Arcade is that I can pick up and play on all my devices where I am signed in with the same Apple ID. However, Alto’s Odyssey does not sync between my iPhone and Mac somehow, even though I am clearly signed in with the same Game Centre account and my high score is showing the same on Mac and iPhone. Is there a fix or is progress between Mac and iPhone not supposed to sync up? Other than that, this is a stunningly beautiful game with music to match. Relaxing but challenging at the same time. Love it..Version: 1.1.2

Big problemI absolutely love the alto series and recommend them to all but there’s a problem with this one for some reason my progress is deleted every time i close the game hopefully this is resolved soon.Version: 1.1.0

Lil’ LemursI had been playing Alto’s Oddesy, a lazy Saturday afternoon being wasted, casually being chased by a lemur. I went on a wallride- and the lemur suddenly jumped super high and started WALLRIDING. I was so shocked I wasn’t paying attention; the lemur had jumped on me, and Maya had fallen about 50,000 meters up. Now, I’ve been playing this for a while now, I’ve completed the original version; It still surprises how the characters never get injured; but the lemur surprised me more. Again, I’ve been playing for a while, but this has never happened; the lemur wallriding was a new one to me. Please tell me if this is a bug or not, because to me it looked like a glitch. [I don’t get why everyone complains about the Day/Night cycle. It’s still super easy to see].Version: 1.1.2

Glitch at the endI played the game all the way through. Loved it. The last quest is to get 350k trick points in one run. I was on 299,700 and the game blacked out and glitched. Right at the end. So annoying. Deleted it..Version: 1.1.4

Solid, but with a few flawsIt’s a solid, reliable way to kill time at the DMV or whatever, with great graphics and sound. It also has a few problems: it’s *dark*, for one. You are never in the day, it’s always a rain storm or sand storm, then right on to night, then back into another sandstorm. Second, the RNG can be a harsh mistress, resulting in grind. I’ve been playing for 2 weeks or something without the thing I need to do a trick appearing. This makes the game grindy since I can’t progress any further until the RNG gives me the terrain I need. It’s a fun little game but frustrating, which is kinda sad because it’s built for casual play with a relaxing vibe..Version: 1.1.1

More of the same, sometimes buggyAs other reviewers have pointed out this game is very similar to the previous game which is not necessarily a bad thing as it remains an enjoyable game to while away a few minutes. Unfortunately, I’ve found that after completing a level I’ll return to the game later that day to find that the achievements have been lost and I’m back at the start of a particular level. It’s happened enough, particularly on the harder levels now that it is becoming tiresome and frustrating..Version: 1.1.1

Gotta fix those bugs, please!I’ve been stuck on the “smash 50 rocks” goal for close to a month, and I could have sworn I’ve accomplished it several times, but then I check and it says I’m at sixteen percent of some ridiculous low amount. Today, I kept count, and I smashed well over 150 rocks on one run. It kept resetting the goal and resetting my current run coins, and therefore not adding them to the end. Unbelievably frustrating to put this much good faith effort in to achieving a goal in game and have it wrecked by a bug. I didn’t import my progress from the last game because I like the goals and wanted to beat them again. What a let down. Boo this 👎🏼👎🏼.Version: 1.1.2

Good game but crashes after every runIPhone 11 on iOS 13.3 Outdated iOS but if it can’t run on iOS 13.3 it should restrict it. I’m not sure why, but after each run, the game will crash to main screen without any notification or noticeable reason.Version: 1.1.1

Nice sort ofThis is an absolutely stunning game… A few things to change / fix: the rocks are really hard to distinguish from the things that make up the background - making it very hard to actually get far (I could really only see they were rocks when the coins arched over them). Another thing is that after you die the game shows the leaderboard page and that just doesn’t fit the stunning game, it looks really cheap and tacky, maybe needs a redesign. Last thing, when I play I want a way to hold down to zoom faster, it feels unnatural to only be able to press and hold to jump or backflip instead of actually participating in going down hills etc. It’s nice to look at but just falls a bit flat for me because of these things!.Version: 1.1.2

I REALLLLY want to like this gameI hope you don’t have ANY vision issues because if you do, this artistically beautiful game and it’s consistently similar tinted palettes gets very discouraging. It’s hard to play when you can’t properly see what your meant to be playing. I hope you don’t have a single learning disability, because if you do this game gets incredibly discouraging very quickly. There is almost no explanation for how everything works, and the learning curve is verrrry steep. Also on this subject the cost of all helpful tools is very high, and recurring— that means you have to keep paying for said tools, even as the levels quickly become chaotically difficult without them. It’s got such a wonderful concept, it just isn’t geared for everyone. IMHE if it’s “ableist” (listen, this is not some accusation don’t get frikkkin divisive on me, we are all in hell sweating on this topic so everyone gots to chill and cope with that reality) in my arenas then it tends to be guilty in other areas as well. But take that with a train of salt, it’s only my humble experience..Version: 1.1.2

A stunning, promising game felled by fiddly controlsAlto’s Odyssey is an absolutely stunning game, with beautiful artwork, mesmerizing backdrops, and a soundtrack that’s soothing and engaging without becoming annoying. Once you get past the mid-teen levels, the game becomes almost unplayable on a touch screen. Some of the obstacles require multiple different types of movements - jumps, wallrides - that are triggered by the same touch. As a result, your character often does something unexpected. I’m not sure if this game would be improved by playing with a game controller, but a more thoughtful touch-based control system would make this game substantially more playable..Version: 1.1.0

Endless runnerIt’s the same alto game as the last two times, with a few new tweaks. Also the character Paz is still in it, despite being slow and hard to use. The lost city isn’t that great and you can’t immediately go to it because you have to find some map pieces, which aren’t hard to find at all..Version: 1.1.0

BrokenApp is broken, whenever I close the game I lose all my progress; levels, coins, the lot. Not happy..Version: 1.1.0

No audioNot sure what’s going on with this game but there is no audio at all for me. I’ve checked in settings and audio is turned on but it’s completely silent making it impossible to play. Will update review if this gets fixed..Version: 1.1.5

Desperately needs a skip challenge optionCan’t express how fun it is to build up your skill and abilities to fly through the air to an amazing soundtrack and visual art. Except when you have to stop doing all that in order to spend run after run trying not to leave the ground to maximise your odds of coming across the power up you need under the exact circumstances to fulfil a challenge. Can take a long time, especially when you occasionally forget that you have a challenge to try to complete and accidentally find yourself just enjoying the game in a suboptimal way. Just add the option to skip with coins after a certain number of runs, it really needs it..Version: 1.1.1

Interesting but flawedThe game is interesting in that new elements reveal themselves consistently (with rock sliding, ruins, collecting things, and the city), the art design is amazing, and the zen mode is pretty fun. I think there are some serious flaws with it too, though. The main issue is the fact that the time-of-day and weather changes a lot, which is sometimes cool (like the thunderstorms with blue lightning), but this causes a problem because the character and all the obstacles are dark, so it’s impossible to see where you are and where the rocks are. The rock sliding mechanism is also problematic, where it’s usually impossible to chasm jump using rocks, and it sometimes flips the character instead of sliding on the rock, causing a crash. The only other things are that it’d be nice if the stuff in the shop was more affordable compared to how hard it is to earn money, and maybe it’d be cool if there were not rocks in the zen mode, or at least the person stood back up from a crash quicker..Version: 1.1.3

Nifty gameFun to play, real neat visuals and music, storms, lightning, kind of hypnotizing in a fun way but I’m ready to call it quits for 2 main reasons: 1) Lack of continuity. Every time I crash it feels like the game is starting again, fresh. I might even just go a few hundred meters and hit some rocks, and the game then says ‘Play Again’ as the option to give it another try. This is the type of game that should give me 3 ‘guys’ to work with, and if I crash, just drop me automatically 50 or a 100 m back without any prompting, then, after that third guy, or if I’ve earned a free guy after 5k, the fourth, then ask if I’d like to play or start again. 2) Just a tad too easy to crash when jumping and landing - which, of course, frustrates the point I just made above. Cool game, really, I could probably just sit and watch the scenery go by all day on a lazy Saturday afternoon, but all the crashing and sudden restarting makes it so that the perceived cost quickly exceeds the ultimate benefit of playing..Version: 1.1.1

Fun but I lost my save game the day after hitting level 22…I love these games but losing a weeks worth of playing it instantly for no apparent reason is a super huge bummer. Hope you can get it fixed..Version: 1.1.0

Ripoff of AXL and TunaThis game is a complete ripoff of AXL and Tuna, an excellent 32-bit iOS game that was sadly never updated to 64-bit. This new game is OK, but the character is too small, the graphics too simple, and the gameplay to basic for my taste. The fun of the original AXL and Tuna game is missing..Version: 1.1.0

Great game but it’s shuts down inexplicablyEvery time I try to launch, the game quits out and just exits. I don’t know why. Please fix..Version: 1.1.1

Great, but annoying bug. This is a fantastic game, beautiful design, incredible scenery, but there’s an annoying bug when using the ProMotion setting, the game freezes and stutters when this is enabled, forcing you to use 60fps only, despite iPads and iPhones now going up to 120fps..Version: 1.1.3

Okay, but annoyingThis game has a lot of promise, but it’s unfair to the player. The shifting colors, based on the “time of day” are neat, but it just washes everything out, especially the rocks. I wish there was a way to disable that. Also, so many of the obstacles (e.g., rocks, cliffs) appear so suddenly due to the steepness of the hill that you can’t possibly avoid all of them. The developers could learn some things by playing Dragon Hills, which IMHO perfected this style of gameplay..Version: 1.1.2

Want to love but some issuesThis game is beautiful and can be calming except for when I can’t see the rocks because they blend so well with the background. Especially at night or dusk. Jumping at the correct time to make it across canyons is almost impossible for me. It’s truly disheartening that there seems to be such a tiny proper jump window. I can’t even collect the map pieces because I can never jump at the correct time. I know it’s already a simple game but can’t the jumping over caverns and to get higher up be a little easier?.Version: 1.1.2

Still not ready with ProMotionI’m ready for an update now to fix ProMotion stuttering….Version: 1.1.3

Could be a 5 star game if it weren’t so darkIt’s a gorgeous game, intuitive and fun. Unfortunately the “dynamic weather” makes it almost unplayable when it is nighttime. For some strange reason the developers decided to make the character dark, on a dark background, with dark obstacles. You can’t even see your character half the time, thus having no idea how to be oriented to stick a landing, or avoid an invisible rock. When it’s daylight the game is very enjoyable, which seems to be only about 1/3 of the time. If there were options to keep the character bright and the rocks were even 50% more visible it would be a 5 star game. As of now it is a pretty good game, with some frustratingly poor design flaws that could be resolved with minor tweaks..Version: 1.1.2

Extremely DisappointedI love the Alto series, and I’ve been playing for years. This game is simply Alto’s odyssey but just with one new biome. It took them 3 years to add one biome? The graphics, functions, and even the music is all the same as the previous game. They should’ve just updated Alto’s odyssey. If they want to make a new game, at least add SOMETHING new that is significant whether it’s the controls, location, or abilities. They should really move on to a new game/series..Version: 1.1.2

Saves! Now forces reloadIt’s a beautiful game and fun, but ever time I close the app and come back it restarts all my progress back to the tutorial so there’s no real gathering of achievements or progress to advance. If this is a fix soon it’ll greatly improve. Update! It’s better with saves, now it crashes whenever you “die”. Closer.Version: 1.1.1

Really hard to playI played about 20 runs, and in every one, I died within a minute by hitting something that was blended so well into the foreground, that it looked like it was supposed to be in the background. Shouldn’t obstacles be obvious, seeing as they end your run immediately? I also found that the game constantly punishes playing well by designing obstacles to only get you across gaps if you aren’t going too fast for them. Can’t even count how many times I had a ton of speed built up from combos, only for my whole run to be ended because I was going too fast for the hot air balloon to float up and bounce me. Just stupid.Version: 1.1.1

Good concept, graphics make the game unplayableThe game is really fun, but more often than not the text is impossible to read because it is black on black. Additionally, you can barely see anything when it’s night, and forces you to strain your eyes..Version: 1.1.4

Game keeps resettingThe game is great, but each time i reopen it to continue playing, the game resets itself and i have to redo the tutorial and none of my progress has been saved. i tried reinstalling the app but it doesn’t fix it..Version: 1.1.0

Still almost impossible to see what’s happening at night…I like this game, it’s good - I played the original version to completion and I’ll play this one too… But, I had the same complaint about the original - when it’s night in the game it’s virtually impossible to see anything. My eyesight isn’t bad, so I can just about play (especially once I get the wing suit) but this is plainly and simply an accessibility issue. When it’s day and I can see and I enjoy the game, wen it’s night I can’t and I don’t. I guess anybody with eyesight any worse than mine would just give up. It needs a mode to always make it day or something. Apart from them the game’s still good, the new area is nice and the new challenges are fine. It does have some bugs and I don’t remember the originally being so noticeably buggy but maybe it was. I’m talking stuff like crashing into rocks while you’re boosting, or not boosting after a really quick wingsuit, or clipping through things at high speed. It’s a good game, just needs to be more accessible please..Version: 1.1.4

Fun game, but too darkI love this game but my only complaint (and it’s a big one) is that the “nighttime” is too dark to play. The contrast is so low that it’s extremely difficult to see not only the scenery but also the character you’re controlling. You can’t even tell alto’s orientation because he’s almost invisible against the dark background. This makes playing the game extremely frustrating after a while because you only really get good runs during daytime or dawn phases.Version: 1.1.2

Ok for a few hours fun but too many flawsA decent sequel with a few original elements, but the difficulty makes for tedious grinding progression and too much dependence on luck. I get that many of the scenes are at night but the game is often simply too dark to play. Flying blind is entertaining once or twice but after 3 crashes in a rapid succession it just feels unbalanced and unfair. If you are trying to play the game anywhere but a dark room, forget it. The new Lost City objectives are a twist, but only being able to have one active at a time feels like they are just trying to stretch it out needlessly and turns the game into a frustrating and tedious grind. Like previous Altos, the items in the store are priced too high. The option of slogging through a dozens runs to secure a single use helmet is just unfun..Version: 1.1.1

Level 46 is unbeatableOverall the game is pleasant and enjoyable, but I finally gave up trying to beat level 46 after over a hundred tries. The goal is “Smash three rocks with a water stream boost in one run.” First, water streams are rare, but rocks following water streams are very rare, often following a lip that forces a jump over the rock. As a result I smashed about four rocks total in all those attempts. Disappointing that I’ll never finish because of this flaw..Version: 1.1.1

Beautiful but…It hurts to rate this harshly because the game is beautiful, but it lost a good bit of its fluidity since earlier versions, and I have been stuck on a seemingly unbeatable level dye to an unreachable goal: smash a Poy with a water stream boost. In the two ish weeks I’ve had this goal, not one pot has appeared during a water stream burst. This and the 1000 for travel seems superfluous when you only stay in places traveled, it seems like, for a couple hours. Because I am stuck with no end and I do get a lot out of goals I’m going to have to delete..Version: 1.1.2

Game is buggedCan't get past totorial. It tells me to "Click and hold to back flip" I click, nothing happens, holds click still nothing. closed game and opened it back up and problem continues. The only way i could pause the game is by alt tabbing and then the pause menu options are non responsive had to force quit game to retry. I've tried with trackpad and pluged in a asus mouse still nothing. (click works to jump over the first rock and nothing and to continue through text and nothing else. the game looks nice and seems fun if only it was playable :/.Version: 1.1.3

Corrupting GameCenter dataI play this game on my phone and AppleTV. My AppleTV is set up with separate users, each with their own AppleID logins for AppStore, GameCenter, etc. My saved progress has been cross-pollinating with my family members who use their own accounts on the AppleTV. Issues: 1) My account was the first to unlock the Lost City, but when my wife played her account she could see “lost goals” appear on her game screen, before she unlocked the Lost City 2) My game progress reverted to my wife’s progress (I was in the mid-30’s level) and suddenly my progress was back to her level at level 24. 4) She opened her game tonight and had lost all of her upgrades. When she checked the workshop, her workshop reflected mine (I had never purchased an upgrade, but had 12,000+ coins). She used the 12,000+ coins to “Re-purchase” her missing items, but then I checked the app on my phone and my game now showed al the repurchased items and depleted coins that she had just done in her account. I had something similar happen with Sp!ng for Apple Arcade and the developers were able to reach out to me and resolve the bugs. I suspect Alto Lost City is having the same issue. I purchased the other alto games in the past and was excited to try the Apple Arcade version, but so far losing progress, losing coins, and corrupting my Family members games has taken the fun out of this release..Version: 1.1.1
