✓ Chess Academy doesn't teach anythingThe introductory lessons are good, but those just show the rules and how the pieces move. I've "purchased" several beginner Chess Academy units but have been disappointed. They generally just show optional moves, but don't teach anything. It's easy to pick the wrong move in "lessons" and have no idea it was wrong or what the right move was. Needs some explanation. Also I still have no idea why kngs can sometimes capture pieces when checked and other times that's not allowed..Run2tunesVersion: 1.20.1

✓ Meh.Pros: - Fast and responsive. - Quickly finds matches for online play. - Interesting cues in chess academy that shows real work has gone in building the sections. Cons: - Confusing character and rewards. Hard to know what some rewards do. - Timer for short games seems weird. Playing on the lichess app I have not experienced losing time so quickly. I think it has to do with network delays from both ends and the how long the unnecessarily complex UI takes to process and update. - No zen mode where you can just enjoy a simple games of chess without the unnecessary bells and whistles..Pokerrr56789Version: 1.17.2

✓ Not a game to actually learn chessThe game is fine - but dont be a game that claims to teach chess if nothing is ever explained. ✓ Fun!EDIT 3 star: Taking off a star because servers time out and you lose a game. Removing another star because i can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally moved a piece to the wrong square. It’s a touch screen so just accidentally tapping the screen in the wrong place during play can cost you a game. ✓ Games disappears, can’t continue themA few times I’ve been playing a game against the computer and had to stop for some reason. If I use my iPhone for something else in the meantime, like taking a video, and go back to the chess app the animated Arcade screen does its thing and the game I was playing is gone. It goes to the Home Screen of the app and there seems to be no way to get back to the game I was playing. Particularly annoying when the game is going well. Also, if you’ve begun a game and neither side has moved and you change your mind to play a different set of options you lose the game..ChemBobVersion: 1.20.1

✓ Bots Bots and more BotsIf you are ok with playing bots this is the app for you. Every opponent I've played when selecting play online vs live player all I get are bots. They all use the exact same opening. If they were real people the openings would vary. The chess academy is a joke. The computer generated moves are moves no one in their right mind would make. ✓ Life is too short for delay timersA lot of the game are hidden behind collecting gems, currencies and keys. Designed to delay the player from playing all the levels at once. Outside of Apple Arcade, I speculate that all those timed delays can be shortened with real money. Pity that this game is interesting but I can’t recommend this game for anyone who wants to play a chess game or ten without jumping through all these artificial hoops. You’ve made a “boring” game interesting for people new to it, but you disrespected a player’s time. I don’t want IAP mechanics in Apple Arcade. If you are learning chess, the only place you can play offline without limits is that practice mode. The other modes will have you try to earn coins or gems to unlock. ✓ Almost goodThis might get good, but right now it has problems that should be addressed. First is network issues. It’s often necessary to kill the app and restart it to re-establish a connection. Second, the game analysis tools are quite limited. Third, and this is the big one, the higher levels are teeming with cheaters. And because the devs have chosen to hide the opponent’s name, you can’t avoid a previously encountered cheater. I’m 2200 USCF and I’ll get a healthy advantage and then for the next 20 moves the opponent suddenly plays perfectly. It’s too frustrating. I’ll stick with lichess..Paradise PeteVersion: 1.18.3

✓ ConfusingPlaying regular chess is fine, I guess, but all this added stuff makes it super confusing on what you’re supposed to do. I didn’t see anywhere that teaches you on how to play the game if you have zero experience with chess. The Chess Academy section just tells you to make checkmate in one or two moves, not actually helpful for learning how to play. In my recent game I let the opponent promote 8 pawns, they chose queen every time and they stopped moving, they just kept on promoting pawns.. it’s a good chess game but probably not that many people are playing it so the developer has tried to create AI opponents that act in a stange way.NismaVersion: 1.18.3

✓ Good two player, rest is blocked behind timed paywall mechanicsThe academy provides no context or instruction. It’s ok I guess if you already know chess. But biggest problem is you need gems, but to get gems you have to wait for more chests. This is their pay to play mechanic they forgot to take out which ruins everything as the Arcade version has no paying mechanism. Also the ratings for moving doesn’t make sense at all. ✓ “Gem” systems should not be on Apple ArcadeThe underlying chess game inside this awful package is not bad taken by itself. But the “mobile game design” disaster pasted on top of it is honestly offensive. This is one of those “check in every 10 minutes to get your keys+gems+coins+items+XP to buy more content” games. It’s the kind of design that is used to get people to keep coming back to the app to spend money… except this is all free so why are there multiple currencies and loot boxes? The app claims to teach you how to play chess but you have to use items to be able to get it to show you an evaluation of the board or which move is best. Those get unlocked from loot boxes. The app has chess puzzles organized as lessons to teach you fundamentals. But those cost gems or coins to unlock, and you get those from loot boxes. This game is part of AppleArcade. The progression should not require loot box mechanics. I think apple should take this game down..HungrybackpackVersion: 1.19.1

✓ Bishop madnessI am new to chess, have only been playing for two months. So I was only playing AI on level 6 of 10. But, I was in a position where I could’ve one the game (I’m pretty sure), but the game locked my bishop, although—from what I understand of the game—my bishop had like 3 legal captures available. ✓ So, so many bugsI would really like to rate this higher, but the bugs and glitches are hampering my enjoyment. In about 70 percent of the chess Academy lessons in which one is asked to pick the best move, I am given no choices from which to pick. In the event that the game does show the options, it never does so consistently throughout the game. Maybe I’ll see the options for move but not the next. Additionally, often when I have attempted to use a hint, none is forthcoming although one has been deducted from my total. If I am mistaken in expecting the options for the moves to appear in all the games in which game instructions state to pick the best move, then at the very least, the instructions are unclear and should be corrected..Yak jackVersion: 1.18.3
