The control system is responsive and intuitive, the graphics and sound are reverently retro and look great, and the game is as compelling and addictive as it always was. ✓ AddictiveI was really skeptical when I first got this game, seemed repetitive and boring. 10 mins later- I could not put it down. The old 80's type gfx really add to the charm of this game. Shame it's over so soon- been playing in my spare time over the last 3 days until i finished it. In hindsight I'm glad the game was not more difficult, getting near the end and dieing would of been terribly frustrating. The enemies that keep stealing the sword of you is very irritating(humanoid ones can and will)-especially when they then teleport. You also only have about 30 mins to get out when you finally have it-which is plenty of time- just use ropes to go up when you can. Cannot wait for the updates. Paid the full amount for this game and I don't regret it..Version: 0

✓ My Favorite iPhone Game. Period.I can't believe I've never written a review for Sword of Fargoal! This is my favorite iOS game out there! Who knows how many dozens of hours I've poured into it. I used to play it during my breaks at work to escape from everything around me into an adventure, haha. Most of the people who have written some of the more negative reviews simply don't understand the type of game that Fargoal is and don't care to find out. Sword of Fargoal is what you would call a "roguelike". It is a game about delving deeper and deeper into a deadly dungeon, in search of a mythical sword. You fight monsters, discover items, learn spells, and gain levels. However, the gameplay isn't as much about action as it is about strategy. When your character dies, that's it. You have to make a new character and start from the beginning. It gives the game a very satisfying risk/reward system and obviously a challenging difficulty. The dungeon is randomly generated though, which means TONS of replay value. Each character you make will have a unique experience. The graphics are very nice and I love the moody music probably above anything else in the game. Also, the controls are another high point. The greatest thing about Fargoal is the sheer level of polish. Sword of Fargoal is a labor of love and it shows. I didn't really like roguelikes before I played Fargoal, now I love them! Whatever the price is, buy this game. Can't wait for the sequel!.Version: 1.7

✓ Dungeon Crawling at its finestThis game is terrific, hands down. If you like fantasy quests, with dragons and elves and magic, this is for you. The interface is smooth an easy to use. the sounds are delightfully retro, lifted and inspired by the original. The soundtrack is great, too! ✓ Love it!I was a big fan of the original on the C64. This is a fantastic remake, and has added a lot of new things that really do add a bit more depth to it than the original had, while maintaining the feel and atmosphere of the original. My favorite thing about this game is the controls. Too many games on the iphone end up being less fun than thry should be simply because of frustrating controls via the touchscreen, but the style of this game and the way the author has set up the controls translate perfectly. ✓ Update to the update!I'm playing through Sword Of Fargoal for the sixth time now, eagerly anticipating Fargoal 2! I read on here that they're preparing to release Fargoal 2, and I couldn't be more ecstatic. Character classes? New monsters and items and tile sets? And it's free?! Count me in! Fargoal is a wonderfully ported and semi-updated version of the Commodore 64 classic. Most of the graphics received an overhaul, while things like the sound effects remain true to their C64 roots. People who are saying that this game is just a non-stop grind are completely wrong and are missing the point. Fargoal is more about the experience, the exploration. It's about the thrill of walking through a tunnel in the wall and exploring the crypt on level 7. It's about finding items to help you in your quest for the Sword Of Fargoal. If you can overlook the grind, you'll find a rich and rewarding experience that easily trumps every crappy western and JRPG in the AppStore. If you don't give this one a chance because you don't understand or get the wrong idea, then it's your loss. Fargoal is fantastic, and I can't even imagine how they could make it better with Fargoal 2. Get it now!.Version: 1.7
✓ Excellent game.This is only the second time I have wrote a review, but this game is so worth it. It's a very simple little Dungeons and Dragons style game where you roam around looking for gold and killing monsters so you can level and kill harder monsters. I've spent two whole nights so far playing this game and I can see myself spending a lot more time with it as well. Yesterday i realized it would be really great to an add a game mode that saves the state of your last temple visit. Then if you die the game is restored to it. Please add this! ✓ Best Roguelike on iOSFar better than 100 Rogues. Solid, flowing gameplay. Complex enough for a roguelike but simple enough for touchscreen controls. I know graphics are not a big concern to a real rogue fan, but SoF has a beautiful, warm, bright look and the simple animations look great. Special mention has to go to the sound. Effects are in a great modernized 'chip tunes' style. And the music? Wow. I normal turn music off on most games, but this isn't the usual bland crap done quickly on a cheap commission. This music show passion and craft in it's composition. The person who made this music clearly gave a damn and didn't just knock something out for a paycheck. Brilliant stuff that adds greatly to atmosphere and ambient enough to never get tiring. If I could change anything, I would add an option to view the map in fullscreen, it's a bit small for my less than perfect vision sometimes. Also the option to play in portrait mode would be nice, to make it easier to play one-handed. Minor niggles though, roll on version 2!.Version: 1.7

✓ Wouldn't part with this one for anythingNot only does this game take one back to the hay-day of gaming, with aspects like excellent design, a simple, yet compelling concept and a great tone of suspense, but it is ad free, easy on the eyes and ears and seems to have found that Holy Grail of gaming, perfect difficulty. Many tries will be needed to bring the Sword back, and I'm still trying on Legend difficulty. And I'll keep trying because this game is so much fun. I have been a roguelike enthusiast since Bridget Spitznagel was porting "Moria" to the Palm... Kyle Poole is working on a CCTG by the way ;) ... looking forward to "Shadow Era"! This app is VERY well done. I don't even crave an ASCII tile set or any other tileset for that matter. As soon as you play a game or two, you will learn the depth in programming is there. From secret treasure rooms (use a light spell) to the little nuances the developer introduced. The design/interface/and artistic direction are spot-on without taking away the roguelike gameplay or feel. I hope the programmer continues to evolve this app with the same artistic direction and carefully considered user suggestions! I really can't wait for 2.0! The price of this app will only be "too high" when the developer abandons updating it. THEN I would say $1.99 would be a proper price. Otherwise, Sword of Fargoal is a much better purchase than "Dungeon Hunters" from this former Angband/Diablo junky. PS. The Temple icon is the only graphic image that just doesn't match the rest of the game... Looks like a + gamepad madgarden! ✓ Awesome rendition of one of my favorite games!I have always loved this game and was excited to find it available in the app store! Beautifully made and crisp, this game never gets old! First of all, the wall tunnels keep the exploration factor high and wasn't existent in the original C64 version. Shields are also an improvement over the original as is the addition of wands, vaults, traps and enemy projectiles like skulls and arrows. And as much as I love the nostalgia the C64 version brings, this version is optimized for iOS and doesn't take anything away but adds so much more. ✓ Addictive, but best consumed in small bitesI really enjoy playing this game. It's good to pick-up for a few minutes, carry on with a dungeon, and then put down again. The graphics are perfectly suitable for this kind of game (retro remake), and the sound effects are good too. The only problems I have with it are that the game doesn't tell you what any of the spells do (I've still no idea what "drift" does, or why I should use "light"), an in-game manual would have solved that. Equally it gets very samey, very quickly. All the dungeons look the same and play the same. I don't mind this, as I expected it before downloading, but it means I only play for a max of 15 mins before I get a bit bored and switch off. Still, a great and faithful remake though..Version: 0

You will not find yourself spending ages managing items in your inventory or shuffling stats around - you just get in there, grab the loot, bash some monsters and get out. The dungeon is deep enough that a lasting game could take you many hours of play if you play carefully, or if like me you can't bear the thought of leaving any dungeon level unmapped! ✓ The Computer Gaming Classic - My All Time Favorite Reborn!This my favorite game of all time, bar none. I played this game on the C-64 when it first came out; it was loaded from a tape drive even before the C-64 had a disk drive available. I still have a Pentium-1 laptop with Windows98 on it that I use to run a C-64 emulator just to play the original Sword of Fargoal. This iOS game is much improved 1,000 times in graphics and now with the new items for you to use and no tape drive. It is fantastic for short pickup games. A total 5 star classic!.Version: 1.7

✓ Like Rogue/Moria/Angband? You'll love Sword of Fargoal!I have spent a lot of hours playing Rogue-like games such as Angband on my computer. There are equivalents out there for the iPhone (iNethack), but they tend to be fiddly as you have to choose keystrokes using the interface, especially with casting spells. Then I discovered Sword of Fargoal. Absolutely fantastic, simple to use interface, the smart-icon does it's job well, and the App even rotates if you change the iPHone orientation (which I wish more developers used). The only problem is if you rotate the phone so that the volume buttons are on top, the videos play upside down. This will be fixed in the next version, according to the developers. For the person that mentioned spells, they do do what you expect: drift allows you to float over some obstacles & escape from certain trapdoors, & light clears the mist from large area.
