✓ Best. Game. Ever. BUY IT!!This is a simply astounding game. The graphics are beautiful, there's so much to explore, mysteries to solve, monster things to kill... And an interesting story behind it all! At times it's very deep...no pun intended haha. It's a very long game the first time through, well worth 5 bucks. And I intend to play through it many, many times! the one thing is that in the beginning, it can be very slow. If you discover certain things sooner rather than later, it probably wouldn't feel so slow. but I myself was thinking "is there a point to this?" . So trust me: explore, explore, explore as much as you can, and when you stumble into the energy temple, the game will pretty much become a whirlwind and never slow down again. Also, if you get to a really difficult spot, you can google it. There's a lot of tactic advice for this game online. I had to resort to the web for help several times, though it wasn't my first choice. (it would have been runner if I could have done the whole thing independently). So even if you need every dollar you have for food, and you're a homeless person (which seems unlikely since you're holding an iPad connected to wifi), buy this. It's much more important than food. ✓ Stunning, unexpected beautyThe soundtrack is reason enough to purchase this App. The controls are solid and the visuals are sharp and fluid on the 3rd generation iPad but the soundtrack is what makes this one of my top purchases on the iPad. You will not be disappointed. On a side note, use headphones. There are certain instruments and lows you will miss out on if you only listen through the iPad speaker and you will miss out on truly one of the best game soundtracks out there. ✓ Beautiful and compellingI found about this game when the soundtrack popped up on a torrent site. After checking out reviews onYoutube, I resolved not to pirate the game, but actually buy it. It seemed too original and well crafted to disrespect by stealing. I was right! It is reminiscent of Metroid and The GBA Castlevania games, but it is much more than a cut-and-paste job. The game beats with a real and sensitive heart. From the delicate soundtrack, to the hand drawn backgrounds, to Naija's lovely voice, the game overflows with meticulous care in its design. Each new area discovered is a joy to explore. Each boss is tougher and more frightening than the last. Each new ability is deepens your game experience. I cannot recommend this game enough. ✓ BeautifulI have spent literally hours absorbed in this game. It looks beautiful and it is a pleasure just to swim through some of the areas such as The Veil and the Kelp Forest - I was not quite so fond of the Abyss... The world is huge! The unrolling storyline keeps you intrigued. Lots of treasures to collect and I like the way that some of these change the decor in Naija's home cave. Lots of food to collect which means that you frequently have to kill harmless fish, but I find I have become quite hardened to that now. Some of the Boss Fights I found difficult but they would have been easier if I'd learned to use the quick form change icons on the bottom left of the screen earlier on - slide your finger from old form icon to new form icon to change - it would be useful if this could be given more emphasis in the help. ✓ Seamless control and great gameplayI am really enjoying Aquaria. I played it on the Mac, but never really got into it. The controls on the iPad make this game. They are seamless and intuitive. A big leap from the Mac to the iPad is the ability to move and sing thanks to Multitouch. Aquaria is reminiscent of Metroid and later Castlevania games in its open environment and item-driven progression. I love those games and I am finding Aquaria a joy to play. I have experienced none of the crashes or freezes that other reviewers have noted. Aquaria has been seamless with no lag or pause. It instantly resumes when switching apps and automatically pauses when removing headphones. I cannot even play more than two minutes without it crashing. Hopefully updates are forthcoming, but at the moment, I simply cannot recommend this. Update: As others have said, rebooting the iPad will fix most crashing issues. What's left is a beautiful adventure game with lots of great gameplay. This game is well suited for touchscreen, especially with the singing powers. The bosses were a nice challenge that required a bit of thought to work out how to defeat. The maps are huge (so big you can get a bit lost) and there's a ton of treasures, recipes and powers for the die-hard completionist to find. 20+ hours of gameplay and fun for $5.50 is money well spent. It's an action-RPG in the style of classic Metroid and Castlevania, but it emphasizes exploration over violence: this is a complex world with a variety of life, not all of which is hostile, and your primary means of interaction is song. The majority of your power-ups are there to keep you alive and help you solve puzzles, keeping the pace (mostly) non-hectic and freeing you to just enjoy playing. And then, when there are big battles, each boss fight itself demands puzzle-solving under fire. The game is incredibly engaging whether you're playing with cute sea creatures, fighting for your life, or just singing along to the background music. The theme is sweet yet macabre: the persistence of goodness in an intricately created robotic society plagued by entropy. Discovering this game is like rereading In The Night Kitchen as an adult: it's greater than the sum of its parts and worth every penny. Considering the amount of time and effort that must have gone into this gem I'm not expecting Machinarium II in the near future. That being said, I advise taking your time with it and avoid any cheating. But it is very much like the Metroid games for NES and SNES, in that it has a huge area to explore, you beat a mini boss and get an ability that allows you progress to further areas. The map system keeps it manageable so the openness doesn't become a detractor. The bosses are fun, you need to work out how to beat them through trial and error. ✓ BrilliantAquaria is probably one of the best games I have ever played on an iPad. The storyline is engrossing, well thought out, and long enough that it would have easily been worthy of a novel. The art is beautifully surreal, dozens of imaginative creatures swim through the water and offer a myriad of challenges to the player. The shear size of the world you have to explore is breathtaking and well worth exploring. Even at the end the game doesn't fail to amaze, I spent the last ten minutes of the game slack-jawed as every little nuance of the story came crashing into place, leaving me with the desire to return to the beginning so I could experience it with a new perspective. I don't have a problem with the controls like some of the other reviewers but I do see how they could be considered cumbersome. ✓ Amazing atmospherI love this game. This is one of the few good, polished games on the AppStore. The music is especially good. One of the problems with the game is that having a mini map visible all the time, really prevents you from appreciating the beauty and immense scale of the world your exploring. Please add a option to make the mini map invisible. Also can you make a sequel. ✓ Massive is an understatementI don't know how I missed this game before, both the PC version and now this. I'm so glad I found it, though. It's beautiful, with so many areas to explore I can't even believe it, and I know I have some more to discover once I figure out a couple more skills. This is by far THE best iPad game I've installed. And I have some of the best out there. There's a pretty good forum at the developer site, too, for when you get stuck. And you will get stuck. Only complaint--controlling your character requires you to cover the screen with your hand quite a bit. Wish there were a joystick type control, so I could just enjoy the scenery more. ✓ Buy this gameMy last review was not very well written, so I am redoing it. This game is absolutely remarkable! The animation, music, story, design, sounds, and size of the game are miraculous. This game does not need anything...except a sequel. Please, please, please make a sequel. I am assuming that you are working on it because at the end of this one it said "to be continued" and it would be very disappointing if the storyline were not continued. ✓ Magical, sublime and so easy to playI remember playing this as an indi title on my PC and thinking at the time how much I loved games like this that are so easy to play its not about the controls and more about the experience. Sadly I was overworked at the time and never got chance to get very far so when I heard this gorgeous title was coming to iPad I wad over the moon. I watched a demonstration from the dev on how they were making the iPad version and it was clear they were spending a lot of time on the interface and overall feel. The end result is a gorgeous game that feels like it was made for the iPad. As the launch screen prompts you! If you can wear headphones as the music alone is a soothing and relaxing journey. I especially love the puzzles based on music and colour, perfect for kids to learn while they play. Hats off to the devs for bringing us this gem and if this is the standard of games we can look forward to in the future on iOS them I'm very excited. ✓ WonderfulThis is a wonderful port, when I first played Waking Mars I immediately thought of Aquaria and thought it would be awesome if they made a port, and you did! It's well done. The only thing that I can complain about is the rippling water when you spin your finger around Naija, it is hard to control, especially on the Sun Temple level when spinning the cogs.
