DRAGON QUEST II for Positive User Reviews

A fantastic portIf you want to experience Dragon Quest 2, this is by far the superior way. All the other ports can be described as "outdated" in certain ways. Non-user friendly menus and unhealthy amounts of grinding are no longer an issue here. Let me stress that, in my opinion, this game has well balanced grinding, at least, out of all the other ports of Dragon Quest 2. Glad that Square Enix decided against padding the game with grinding, when they could have made it significantly worse and added IAP's. I'm very pleased that they didn't do that! The biggest problem about this port is that it forces portrait mode. Not a problem for phones, I'd probably argue it's preferable to play it vertically on phones. But it is fairly cumbersome to play on tablets like that, it would be far better to play it in landscape mode for a tablet. I didn't think it was a massive problem, but I'm sure for some people it could turn them away from purchasing it. At the start I wrote that this was the best port of DQ2, I mean unless you're Japanese, because then you'd have the PS4 and 3DS ports, which would be better than this IMO, purely because it's identical to this port, except you could play horizontally. But we don't have those yet, and I'm sure they'd probably cost more than this copy does anyway. In summary, this is a great port of Dragon Quest 2!.Version: 1.0.3

Awesome!I never beat this as a kid growing up in the 80s. Took 30+ years but I finally did it. Awesome game..Version: 1.0.5

BugsGreat game until it bugged out. I can't talk to shop owners without the game shutting down :(.Version: 1.0.0

Crashes all the timeThis is probably one of my favorite dragon quest games, but it crashes constantly on iOS 10. Update: they finally fixed the crashing issue!.Version: 1.0.3

Nice throwbackIt is fun, cheap way to enjoy childhood nostalgia, but the old carts and system would be a lot of money and time.... this I was able to enjoy it on the road. It has been changed... it is the same, but they nerfed the crap out of it, the save log allows you to save anytime (good for the road) but makes the game much easier... save every 5 steps or after every battle... also the level “grind” doesn’t feel as difficult or time consuming The graphics are nice and updated, the games save feature is nice for on the road, and it is pretty much exactly like the original, although some names were changed. I gave it a 4 because it was great fun, but needs a classic mode that is just like the original... heck in today’s insta win game world it would be called “hardcore” mode.Version: 1.0.5

Best game ever..but crash everytimeI cant talk to a merchant without the game crashing.. Please fix it. I see that many other people have the same problem. Do something , its the best game ever , we need to play ! ;).Version: 1.0.0

Back button bugs fixed in latest updateI notified Square Enix of the issue in this game when I contacted them about the same one in Dragon Quest 3. The support ticket was escalated with a fix on the App Store a few days later. Kudos to the app developers on fixing this! What issue was: Broken back button and button for switching directional pad on iOS 11 + iPhone SE. App works ok on iOS 9 + iPhone 4S This game is a classic RPG and the UI and touch controls work well too. Treat yourself and get this app..Version: 1.0.5

FantasticReally enjoyed this nostalgic throwback. Almost no grinding out levels required. Just one important note, when finding your way to Rhone/Rendarak, in the small room with the teleportation tile, the secret exit is on the southern wall. I’m pretty sure the nes version I played ages ago didn’t have the room with the old man to confuse things (talking about heading West or something)..Version: 1.0.5

Game breaking glitch::fixedUpdated: now that it works it's a great game. Square Enix: fix the bug on this game. Otherwise it's completely broken and unbeatable. Don't buy unless it's fixed..Version: 1.0.3

I never got to beat this game as a kid!Now I can relive my childhood in classic RPG fashion, without an older brother taking the controller away. Anyone who played this as a kid will be a bit sad that it’s much easier with the quick save and auto save feature... but it saves you hours of your life too! Especially for gaming on the go! So glad they put this on iOS!!.Version: 1.0.5

Solid title and great remakeIf you enjoy classic party and turn-based RPG's, then this is for you. Great adaptation of the original NES game with new features such as being able to return to any town or castle rather than only where you last saved. Only problem is a message speed bug when using battle items where the text progresses increasingly slower the more you use them until you reload your game. If ever fixed, then 5 stars from me..Version: 1.0.1

Bug fixed :)Thankfully, an update was just released that fixed the back button being untappable on iPhone 6 devices. This is probably the best was to play the game, good job devs..Version: 1.0.5

Great Classic RPG, but....This game is great if you're a 2D rpg fan. I only have one pet peeve about this game, which is the language the game is using or tried to use. I understand the game takes place in a setting of a medieval type of era, but could they at least have the text be in the modern English language? Seriously, I had to analyze each sentence to understand and look for clues of what to do..Version: 1.0.5

Great Game, some sound glitchesFantastic game, first time playing through the original trilogy. Had no issues playing through DQ1 on iPhone 6S but had some sound glitches with DQ2 - sometimes the music is playing but the button click noises and attack noises don’t play. Settings are set to default and closing the game and restarting doesn’t always fix it. Otherwise a fantastic port though.Version: 1.0.5

Worth the moneyA faithful port of a classic RPG from my childhood. While the game is easier than the original on the NES due to exp scaling it is otherwise an almost perfect port..Version: 1.0.5

The enemy are defeatedPlease read above..Version: 1.0.5

Got it!!!! I Love RPG's :)Please release more. I'll buy 'em all. :).Version: 1.0.1

Excellent classicI recently started on the DQ series and just cleared this second title last night. DQ1 felt like a fun, retro RPG but in DQ2 I teared up a bit listening to the ending :p This is a super improvement on DQ1 on many levels - several fun quests to complete and you can take your time exploring the expanded world and richer settings. The 3-member team play made the story and characters far more engaging, and when you finish you really feel like you've overcome obstacles, shared adventures, and saved the world with two best friends. It is amazing that this old game with pixelated graphics can still give much joy to players :) Looking forward to playing DQ3 soon!.Version: 1.0.1

Fixed bugI found a way around the crashing, hopefully it works for more than just me. I play on my iPhone 5c and on startup with a saved game usually crashes talking to inn, shipowner, etc. I found as soon as I start my saved game that if I make a quick save then continue playing the game will not crash! Hope this works! Great game, a lot easier that the items show up as a "sparkle" though....Version: 1.0.0

Great Sequel, iPhone X Optimized!I love the original Dragon Warrior/Quest. It was my first RPG and still one of my favorites. However, many people say this sequel isn’t as good... BUT, I think this game is amazing! It’s the perfect blend of simplicity and customization. The first was very simple and the third has a lot of options. This DQ is a great mix. And now that it is updated to fit iPhone X, I’m really really enjoying it!.Version: 1.0.4

Really greatLove the whole dragon quest series. For nostalgic purposes you can’t put these down. There is a bug though. When you get to the parts of the game. And you fight mobs like pazuzu, they won’t spawn. If you leave the area and come back to that map, you can walk forever and nothing will spawn. This noticeable if both DQ2 & DQ3.Version: 1.0.5

Loved it, got through it pretty quickDefinitely worth the price tag. I admit I had a bit of trouble staying immersed and fell back on an old ascii walkthrough to burn my way to the finish line. But it was still worth it. Doing it that way made it a pretty short game. The low difficulty helped. Now I’m on to DQ3 which I like more..Version: 1.0.5

Good gameNo crashes for me. can't get into Hargon's castle though. I believe I have tried everything..Version: 1.0.0

Sound effectsI’m getting music but no sound effects even at max setting. I’m playing on iPhone 8 Plus Any ideas.Version: 1.0.5

Wonderfully nostalgic.Everything you'd expect from the classic version of a now legendary franchise. Not as long as the blockbusters of today, but still full of relevance and charm. Will always be one of my favourites, and I'm thrilled to be able to play it officially in English at last. Looking forward to future releases, perhaps even on a certain handheld console? *puppy dog eyes* Thank you Square Enix! :-).Version: 1.0.1

Pretty good portPolishes up a classic rpg.Version: 1.0.3

Error ReportNot really a review so much as reporting an error. Game froze while on the top floor of the southern dragon's tooth while playing on an iPhone 7. I had a set alarm on my phone go off just as I encountered an enemy "Sekerleton", dismissed the notification (swiped up on the pop-up) and the game stopped responding, sound stopped and had to force-close the app. Not sure if it was caused by the alarm starting during/before the battle started or if it was caused by dismissing the notification while in-game. Other than that, this has always been one of my favorite classic game series, you did fairly good work on this title, aside from losing some of its old charm without the original action menu. Still five stars..Version: 1.0.3

Crashing after battle fixedGame no longer crashes after almost every random battle. Will update once I've played more of the game. Otherwise, seems like a solid dragon quest game with all the pros and cons the series has..Version: 1.0.3

I’m back.I finished the second game today. Beautiful experience like the first game, yet more expansive. Felt more alive then DQ1 (to be expected). I wrote long last time so I’ll Make it quick. I can’t wait to start the 3rd game. Everyone talks about how good it is and it’s the 3rd game at that. I got it waiting for me tomorrow. I don’t want to jump right in. I need coffee something to eat and 2 hrs lol. DQ3 here I come. #PEACE.Version: 1.0.5

Another great remake!.This is better than the retranslated version as well!. Great job square enix. Can you make final fantasy 7, dragon quest 6, 7 and 9 for the iPhone (iOS)?. It would be great if it is possible..Version: 1.0.1

Crash issue finally fixed. This game finally works as intended, and no longer crashes after every battle. Highly recommended for fans of grind heavy classic jrpg's, perfect for killing time and remembering there's actual JRPG games on the App Store that aren't infested with micro transactions and thinly disguised "gameplay" designed to separate fools from their money. A classic in every sense of the word and absolutely worth the one time purchase price for jrpg fans..Version: 1.0.3

Great classic :)I've just finished it , really great version :) Got an iPad air2 run Well and no freeze thanks to port our fav rpg series of all time on iOS :).Version: 1.0.0

Good but needs patch.Yooooooo patch this. It crashes whenever I talk to anyone behind a counter. The main bad guy might actually win if you don't do something about it. Crashing the game is an ingenious way to defeat me..Version: 1.0.0

Sound effect not working! The game is really fun, but the sound effects are not working on my iPhone XR. Apparently i’m not the only one with this issue..Version: 1.0.5

DQ2 is no longer the worst RPG of all timeAfter beating DQ1, I kept thinking “how on earth did 8 year old me figure all this out?” Answer: it took me 6 months and a notebook where I wrote down clues and mapped the caves and dungeons. I recall as a child starting DQ2 but don’t remember why I didn’t play it after a couple weeks. DQ2 difficulty level has to be 100X that of DQ1. The world is 4X as big, you need a boat, the dungeons are nearly impossible to figure out without a guide/walkthrough, there are 147,000 villagers to talk to and decipher their Ye Olde English clues. DQ1 had a handful of items you needed to acquire in order to complete objectives. I can’t even guess how many were in DQ2. You gain 2 characters, each with their own rules on what armor and weaponry they can don. Do you sell items back to the shops or try them on your partner first? So much thinking involved. It’s a slow go getting started and I bow my head in shame that I resorted to a walkthrough and auto save scrumming. Nonetheless, by the end I was addicted and neglected my wifely duties to beat this game. Wasn’t the biggest fan of Atlas. His power was very random and it didn’t seem fair that he killed my full HP level 36 Princess in one swipe. But what the original game lacked is more than made up for in this version. It plays flawlessly, there are no ads or hidden fees. Very enjoyable RPG..Version: 1.0.5

Excellent port!Dragon quest 1-3 are all amazing on IPhone XR, they look and play great. Please update dragon quest 4-6 as well to take advantage of the new screen size please!.Version: 1.0.5

Starry SkiesI love the dragon quest franchise! Still praying for IX to hit iOS (long shot I know but I can dream).Version: 1.0.3

Combat bug fixed nowAlthough it took SE a shamefully long time, at long last the combat crash bug appears to be fixed and it's playable once again..Version: 1.0.3

GreatDragon quest 2 is definitely more in depth in comparison to the original, but it still keeps that classic feel to it, and I'm really enjoying it, just as I did the first one. Worth it..Version: 1.0.3

Great!Five stars, I did really appreciate those remakes for iOS of the first 3 chapters of DQ. I do love the new graphic style (compared to the nes one) and the Middle English text, even if it's really hard to understand if you're Italian like me! Great job..Version: 1.0.1

Bug fixesJust adding this review to show SE my appreciation for addressing the bug that made this game unplayable. (Admittedly, it did take them pretty long to fix what seems like a minor yet gamebreaking bug.) Seems to be fine now, and it's a fantastic classic jrpg, and it's probably the best version of DQ2 out there..Version: 1.0.3

Bugs & Issues Are FixedAll the bugs and glitches have been fixed, so ignore the past bad reviews. Now that the game runs perfectly, it's great! I've been playing pretty non-stop the past 2 days. Very fun and addicting..Version: 1.0.3

Dragon Crash IIThey fixed the bug! Now it is a delightful game to play! Just picked this up a few days ago, just got the second character, now the game is unplayable due to nigh-constant crashes at the end of battles..Version: 1.0.3

AwesomeNot had any problems with the game crashing as some reviewers have (iPad 3)..Version: 1.0.0

CrashesIt's a good game but it often crashes when you visit a shop or inn..Version: 1.0.0

Major bug cant finish the gameSome idiot on the programming team put a wall in the temple that supposed to get to Hargon. Now the final part is blocked until this gets fixed. Who does the quality testing on this thing?.Version: 1.0.0

Dragon quest 2Crashes after battles.... very very annoying!! Please can I have a refund?.Version: 1.0.2

Great GameNeeds controller support along with landscape view for it. Also the virtual d-pad is in the center of the screen when playing on my iPhone XS Max..Version: 1.0.5

Another classicThe game is just like any other Dragon Quest games. Classic old school Jrpg. Game ran flawlessly on my iPhone 4S. The button layout is amazing, the game plays well with one hand. The game can be frustrating sometimes (the old english doesn't help). But in general, it's a great game!.Version: 1.0.1

TY Square Enix for listening to us!FINALLY they fixed the bug issue. I'm grateful they listened to our complaints. I now give this game 5 out of 5 stars!.Version: 1.0.3

Love the game but no SFXSFX stopped working in menus/battles after a quicksave was loaded up. Haven’t found a fix but apparently this is a common issue that probably won’t get patched..Version: 1.0.5

A ClassicWhen my Dragon Warrior I & II cartridge for my Game Boy stopped working shortly after finishing the first game, I was glad that I could play the second on my phone. This is a great game. The game itself is a classic. Although, among the DQ games its considered to be one of the worst, I found it quite enjoyable. The story is much more involved than the first one and the additional party members add to the experience. This version of the game is probably the best. The game is generally criticized for its difficulty, but with this version a lot of that has been fixed; the ‘hidden’ treasures sparkle, the prince and princess are pretty useful, there’s a world map, etc. I also liked the updated sprites and the additional save options. The one thing that I didn’t really like was the controls. Coming from the Game Boy, it took me a while to get used to the touch screen controls, but once I did, I did. And to be fair, there aren’t really any better options on a phone. Overall, it’s a great game, well worth the $5 imo.Version: 1.0.5

Great retro game!!Some really great music and a terrific port of the original - now that the crash bug appears to be fixed!.Version: 1.0.3

Playable Again! It only took three months to fix!.Version: 1.0.3

Almost flawless...Great remake of a classic. Now the bug driving me crazy is when you use any of your gear as an item(like the lighting staff) the delay is really long. You almost think it's going to crash any second. Fix that and you got a five star translation.Version: 1.0.3

Awesome!I love the dragon quest series!! Great game! (Extremely happy they are on the iPhone and iPad..).Version: 1.0.3

ClassicEverything has a few bugs when first released. Still, it's a great classic to play. Hope DQ III will be next and don't forget to make a classic bundle pack of DQ I - IV if it is..Version: 1.0.0

SecretIf you are following the walkthrough that says go up the stairs in Beran and you’ll be in the outside world to Rendarack, but your in a room with an old man, then go DOWN not up to the stairs from the warp. Good game, nice interface, beat Malroth at levels 40, 38, 35. Wish I had know prayer ring has limited number of uses before I sold 2 of them. Poof Dust.Version: 1.0.5

Solid classicA solid retouch of an old classic. The gameplay is very traditional and much if the difficulty is unintentional due the age of the games concepts. Still a solid Dragon Quest experience and a fun little romp into Alefgard..Version: 1.0.0

Shops crash the gameThanks for fixing the shopkeeper crashing bug. Still, what happened to the unique musical score in Wellgarth/Burrowell? That delightful townswoman doesn't sing for you anymore, and it now sounds like every other boring town..Version: 1.0.5

Well worth the money! It's been a long time since I last played This game. Likely since the 90s. I remember spending months beating the NES version. I can't remember how old I was, 11 at most. My memories of abuse in the last cave and castle kept me from playing subsequent ports. Time having healed my wounds I decided to give this port a go and do not at all regret my decision. This game is awesome. The difficulty feels just about perfect, the world more open than I remember, and the format of a mobile platform fits this game so perfectly. I do have some complaints about the controls, and the lack of precision makes a certain aspect of the final cave a bit more frustrating than it needs to be, but overall this was an awesome port and a great experience. Very much looking forward to other mobile ports (DQ7 in particular)! Keep up the great work squenix!.Version: 1.0.1

The game is working now!No more problem. It’s a great game after all those years..Version: 1.0.1

One of the finest RPGs experiences to dateOne of the finest RPGs experiences to date, music is splendid,.Version: 1.0.1

This is a Great game👍👍👍👍.Version: 1.0.5

How do I change language?I know this is a good game and I want to play the game in traditional Chinese but I cannot find where I can switch it..Version: 1.0.5

Bugs have been fixedFIVE STARS!!! Now that the patch has been released to fix the crash/ bugs!!!! :).Version: 1.0.1

BUG IS GONE! NO MORE CRASHES!Bug is gone. Started new game on 10 August 2016 before the update. At Rippleport (Liamport). Once I kill both of the Gremlins, the app crashed. Installed update, and now I got past the Gremlin battle, got the ship, and I'm on the quest to collect the 5 crests..Version: 1.0.3

Bugged combat fixed!EDIT: The game seems to work again as of the most recent patch. Way to not bungle the most basic aspects of quality assurance, Square Enix. Good job! ******* I caused a glitch to occur somehow during this playthrough. After exiting the cave with the Silver Key, I used a Chimera Wing, and Tantegel castle was on my list (despite how I hadn't yet been there). This doesn't seem to be adversely affecting my game. ******* DQ2 is a fun, fairly simple classic JRPG. It's scope is smaller than DQ3 (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), and more in-depth than DQ1. I enjoyed that it was much more like older RPGs in that it gives you a decent sized world to freely explore where you will once you get your ship. There is a pretty fantastic sense of exploration in this game, especially considering how old it is! For a JRPG, this game wasn't much of a grind fest at all, which I liked. It moves along at a good clip without you ever really having to stop & level up. There are some minor gripes. There seems to be a minor glitch where if you use an item (like the Lightning staff) in battle, it takes an absurdly long time for the text & damage to load up (like a minute+ for a group of enemies). It'll also often not say "Isolde uses the Lightning Staff", and instead it just says "13". Pretty lazy quality control for a game that costs $4-5. There's some other minor nuisances, like how you have an item called the Echo Flute (which is used to help you locate key plot items) which will only work if you're in the EXACT room where the plot item is found. This makes the item misleading. You walk up to a tower, you use the flute, it says "no echoes here", and you think "ok!" And go search elsewhere. Unfortunately, the item WAS there, only it was like 6 floors up. My gripes are minor though, and on the whole this game was pretty fun! If you like old school RPGs, pick it up..Version: 1.0.3

EpicReally epic game.Version: 1.0.5

3rd Times the charm…I have tried three times (at least) since the late 80s to beat this game. The original NES one was a little too hard for me at 9. My second try was on a flash Cart and I there was a save issue so I gave up. Shame on me for not staggering the 3 save slots… ;) I am so glad I saw this through on my iPad Pro. What a Great gaming experience. It was just about perfect related to the little fixes and QoL features. This version challenges the idea that DQ2 was the black sheep of the series. Cheers.Version: 1.0.5

GoodGood.Version: 1.0.5

Nicely doneThe grind is a bit real on this one. The monster encounter rate definitely higher than I recall, plus you must grind levels on about three to four different occasions. After getting all the end game gear and leveling all three characters to 46 the last boss was easy. Played on a iPad, controls were good since you can move by touching any part of the screen. Translation was a bit mediocre. Overall a good experience. I guesstimate about 35 hours to complete the game. Tips: get the falcon blade (bought in town), don’t skip the mad cap (last cave, near end game) both items make a big impact..Version: 1.0.5

FixedWith the latest iOS update, all game crashes seem to have stopped and I can finally enjoy this game. I've been waiting for a while now and am so happy to continue my Dragon Quest education..Version: 1.0.3

A lovely trip down nostalgia laneI used to play these games all the time on the NES and this one is better with the superior graphics. The interface is pretty natural and easy to use, though I wish there were an option where the screen could switch to horizontal view. I also forgot how hard all the puzzles in this game were (it's been long enough since I played it that I forgot everything). It was well worth the few dollars I spent on it..Version: 1.0.0

Thanks for fixing the bugA lot better now. Thanks..Version: 1.0.3

A step upCertainly an improvement gameplay wise when compared to the first one, which was still itself enjoyable. It is a pleasure being able to experience this franchise's origins..Version: 1.0.1
