Nerva: IBS & Gut Hypnotherapy for Negative User Reviews

Effective but expensiveI’ve found this app very helpful in managing my gut symptoms. In particular, it does a great job of breaking the symptom-stress cycle which was definitely exacerbating my symptoms. It’s such a shame that the program is so expensive as I can’t afford to keep using it. I think it’s very unfair to keep charging $99 every three months, particularly for those who could benefit from long term use. The cost makes the program inaccessible to so many sufferers. I would happily rate the program 5 stars if it was more affordable..Version: 20.4

The most expensive app I’ve ever heard ofThe cost of this for 3 months is ridiculous.Version: 19.4

Didn’t get on with thisI’ve used hypnosis in-person many times and always find it very helpful. Unfortunately I didn’t get on well with this app and I think it has a lot to do with the choice of hypnotherapist and their voice. We are have different preferences and to only have a choice of one voice is limiting. I was recommended this app by my dietitian but would next time choose my own therapist. I was also very disappointed that the app auto renewed at the end of the 3 month subscription without any notice that it’d be happening or giving me a chance to cancel. I’ve now cancelled the auto subscription so I’d like to make others aware of this in case they too find this app unhelpful..Version: 10.2

I loved it and then…UDATE: they fixed my issue (below), but ONCE again, I can’t access my sessions. SAME PROBLEM. I wasn’t doing sessions every day, so I am on WEEK 4 with a month left on my 3 month subscription (which I bought about 6 weeks ago). The APP thinks I’m on WEEK 6, and so NOW it thinks I’m finished and has booted me out AGAIN so I can’t see any of the sessions I completed, or any of the sessions in the remaining two weeks I have left to do. WHY? What kind of app doesn’t let you see your progress or go back? I should be able to see whatever I want while I’m paying, no? I’m so disappointed. This app was highly recommended to me and has just been one hassle after another. Don’t spend the money. This app is a RIP OFF. Find another hypnotherapy app if this is the route you want to go. I AM DOWNGRADING MY REVIEW FROM THREE STARS TO ONE STAR after going back and forth with customer service for 2 days my app is STILL NOT UNLOCKED. 1. They told me it was due to an “update” and that it would be fixed “soon”. 2. I asked that the ADD the days on to my subscription that the app was down, as I paid for 3 months…not 2 months and 27 days. They said “we’ll keep that in mind”. 3. I asked again what was happening. They said “we’ve canceled your auto renewal”. I swear there is not a real person responding to me as the replies are so disjointed from the questions I’m asking. I am beyond frustrated. The saddest part about it is that the program was helping me. Now I can’t access it, AND I’m out $100. It’s all bad. OLD REVIEW After 3 weeks it said I was finished my 6 week program, even though I’d only just finished my first session of week three. So, I tried to get back to the 6 week program by restarting my sessions and it booted me out and now my subscription doesn’t work. I paid for 3 months and only got 20 days of it. I can’t unlock and sessions except week one day one. I’m pretty upset that I paid $100 for this and am not getting what I paid for. If I don’t hear from the developer in the next few days I’ll be asking for a refund through the App Store..Version: 20.4

ExpensiveReally? $90 per 3 month app subscription which is ultimately a computer program for people who are desperate for help. Yes I get it is researched but it is not individually tailored. I’m a psychologist and I think it’s bordering on the unethical!! In fact it is unethical to promise results when the program is not covered by the health regulatory board and there is no individual assessment undertaken and program developed by a clinician. It is also unethical to insist via email that consumers are not serious about their health unless they do the program. In Australia this sort of advertising is considered illegal in the provision of health services …..but the developer gets to fly under the regulator’s radar by being an app as opposed to being provided by a health practitioner. Be warned!!.Version: 18.4

Zero reduction in symptoms, made me more stressed, not designed for infrequent useI found the entire Nerva program extremely unsatisfying. I often found myself stressed and angry as a result of doing a session, especially when it explained how calm I should be feeling, when I fact I was actually feeling pain and extra anxiety/stress from doing a session and being unable to feel the things I was being told to feel. I have small children and a busy life, and often I found myself not having time to do a session for 3-4 days, often doing it too late in the evening and wanting it to be faster or feeling obligated and not in the right headspace for a session, ending sessions in anger and frustration and not being able to relax. The way the app is designed is it assumes you do it every day, so if you skip days it feels like you have to catch up, or feel like you missed important sessions. I found zero benefit to my symptoms, not a single difference, even when I managed to do the sessions regularly for a two week period. I feel like it was a complete waste of money and I am angry I spent so much on no benefit. It needs to adapted to more busy people and be designed in a way that doesn’t require commitment to do it every day, including the app design/structure. The sessions themselves shouldn’t talk so explicitly about how someone should be feeling, as people like me who weren’t feeling that way feel like they are doing it wrong or have something wrong with their brain. It’s hard to not take the instructions literally. Needs more disclaimers in the sessions that feeling certain ways is ok. I’m incredibly disappointed. I ended up giving up and not doing most of the program and feeling like I wasted my money. The only benefit I got from it was having a holistic view of myself focusing on my body and stress and how it relates to my IBS, which is saving it from a one star review. I must be an outlier in the 20% who don’t find the benefit, I also think perhaps my brain does not suit hypnotherapy, I couldn’t shake the feeling the whole time that it was not scientific and not going to work despite working extremely hard to be positive and not skeptical. :(.Version: 19.4

ScamThey sign you up for their annual subscription without letting you know..Version: 21.3

No good for people who cannot visualise.A good idea in theory, there are three main issues I have noticed: 1. The hypnotherapy sessions are visualisation based. If you have aphantasia, like me (no images in your head) then it gets quite frustrating. 2. Telling sometime to ‘imagine a nice, relaxing sensation’ does not actually cause or create a sense of relaxation. A lot more needs to be done to actually trigger relaxation in the nervous system, especially if you have mental illness. Somatic exercises, such as progressive relaxation technique need to be included. 3. The tracking does not taking into account other things you may be doing outside the app to improve your symptoms. It’s also very vague and doesn’t include any way to track food etc. The app allows you to share the data with a healthcare professional, but would provide little benefit other than to show you have the condition you already know you have..Version: 22.1

No customer support- wasn’t able to access full programThe app repeatedly says if you have to miss a day, it’s ok. Well I missed a few here & there & the app went on without me. It accelerated to the end without me & denied me access to previous day even though I still had an active subscription. I ended up losing the whole last week. I wrote emails, sent screen shots, and nothing. I was repeatedly told my concerns were being sent to the higher ups but never heard back after that. They certainly send me emails now that my subscription time is over, asking for more $$$. No emails about allowing me access to the program I paid for and didn’t get access to. The breathing exercises & the like are helpful & calming but the lack of assistance & money grabbing are definitely not..Version: 21.2

Helpful Yet Repetitive & PriceyI enjoyed the first couple of weeks but the repetitiveness of the hypnotherapy sessions got to me and kept me from completing the program. I realize they have a reason for repeating sessions but it wasn’t helpful for me because I no longer looked forward to the hypnotherapy portion. It just became annoying and boring having to visualize and hear the same hypnotherapy sessions each week. I did do the readings which were insightful. The app did help as far as my symptoms now being more manageable because I am able to implement some of the techniques such as visualization and deep breathing. However, this program for me was not worth almost $70. I ended up becoming completely uninvolved after such a short time and, aside from the readings, wasted over half of the subscription (my stats are showing only 2 weeks fully completed and it dropped weekly from there as I lost interest)..Version: 16.1

Nerve gut meditationLook I have to say it did help initially as a way of keeping track of symptoms over time and meditations are really comforting. It helped me realise that my gut issues probably are IBS and with meditation I can ease my symptoms. However in saying that. How could a subscription. possibly cost this much money it’s just a bunch of voice recorded meditations. I think you should lower your cost if you actually want to help people. For this price I could go get a massage or see a therapist or do something else really worth while for myself as opposed to spending 97 bucks for three months to listen to the same recorded voice meditations..Version: 17.5

Not a carefully thought out strategyIf the effects begin 4-6 weeks in of using the app then surely that should be the trial period to make a user commit to using your product, especially when the subscription costs are incredibly high. There are mindful meditation apps that have a 1 year trial period so it might be worth reconsidering more buy-in from your users who are willing to pay for something if it works no? One week is not enough to know whether it’s worth paying for an app that focuses on using self affirmation exercises as well as accessible knowledge that can be found online. Perhaps it’s a matter of convenience for most people and it’s a nice concept but I need to see more value to justify the cost.Version: 1.8.5

Hard SellHaving done the pre assessment, everything sounds really promising. Especially where they explain the link between anxiety and IBS. It really sounds like they care about you, taking the time to ask all the questions about you and your condition. But…..get to the end of the questions, when it is time to sign up and then you get a “you must sign up in 15mins” countdown. For such a caring company with a supposed understanding of the anxiety link to IBS, should they be putting this hard sell pressure on? If you don’t sign up, you get follow up emails, again with countdown on “sign up in 4 days”. I would like to believe this is a good idea, but the hard sell make me think otherwise..Version: 18.4

Nerva - a really helpful appI’m in week six of the Nerva programme for alleviating IBS. The hypnotherapy sessions are deeply relaxing, I particularly like the voice of the person conducting the sessions - it is gentle and reassuring. However the scripts used for the hypnotherapy are repeated often and I find this disappointing and irritating. After some sessions I’ve felt deeply relaxed and I’m hopeful that the suggestions contained the ‘good’ sessions will help to change my gastro-intestinal responses to somewhere near “normal” therefore enabling the IBS symptoms to fade away..Version: 20.4

RelaxationIt is challenging for me to relax especially when I am being asked to do so. I feel the pressure to accomplish something that it’s not easy for me to do. I seem to respond much better to the word CALM instead. In other hypnosis practices they use different ways to get someone to relax like going down and down the stairs. Do you have any ideas that can help me to relax? Otherwise I do like the meditation. Thanks. I continue to have a challenge with the expectation to relax. I think using another word, maybe something like, “my arms starting to soften”. Soften, soften a little...this language does not feel like pressure. Otherwise, I continue to like the content. Thanks. I do like the content of the mediation. I wish there was a different way to help people to relax. Using a different language like CALM, or SOFTEN... soften a little. This way there is no pressure or feeling like I’m not accomplishing something I’m supposed to do. But like I said the content of all the meditations are really good..Version: 1.8.5

Had high hopesI had very high hopes for this App but on week two the app locked me out and showed I completed the program, which I did not. Support was not very good and I learned you basically get 6 weeks no matter how many of the sessions you listened to…. I was able to get the app working again after several back and forth emails (no phone support) and to be honest the stress of this kind of turned me off. I feel like this app is more about the money than healing. Like I mentioned 6 weeks doesn’t matter how many sessions you do and you can’t go back to read the other part of the session. I was doing these at night so missed all the reading. The silly part was I kept getting emails from Nerva telling me how great I was doing. So automatic emails that know nothing of where you are on the program. I did like some of the sessions but quickly learned most are a copy and paste on the relaxation part which was annoying since this app is not cheap. I do believe there is potential here but until the app is constructed toward the user and not geared toward a “keep you paying model” wasn’t really impressed. More annoying you have to keep paying if you want to listen to them again. Then at the end you are expected to pay for a maintenance program…..hmmmmmm No Thanks!.Version: 20.4

Not tailored enoughAn app was never going to be as tailored as 121 hypnotherapy, but since it was created by a leading ibs specialist, it’s odd that there isn’t two versions of each session for ibs-c and ibs-d, as they’re completely the opposite symptom wise. I found myself tensing up a fair bit when they said about ‘flowing freely’ and phrases like this as for me, that’s exactly the opposite of what I want to happen. I also get panic attacks when out in nature irl because that often means there’s no access to a bathroom - and most of their visualisations are out in nature. The app itself was very easy to use and well structured, it’s just so disappointing that the actual hypno content was so counter productive. Maybe if they make one specifically for ibs d I will consider purchasing. But my symptoms did not change. If you have ibs-m you might be ok!.Version: 20.4

My impressionsI am not sure I am being hypnotized but I’m following instructions. I seem to be having very large, very loose BMs without pushing. Still very frequent over first 2 hours awake. May be emptying more. 🤞and look forward to more progress..Version: 22.1

Calmer but not curedDefinitely feel calmer, think I managed 8 weeks daily and a couple more weeks most days. Miss it if I don’t do it but unsure if any significant improvement in gut symptoms as they vary anyway. Having told you this may be all you need before signing up they do advise to watch what you eat midway through. Doesn’t feel good value after initial 6 weeks, even during the first 6 weeks the same sessions are repeated but there’s no way to rate them so you know which you get on with better - some I found a bit annoying. Haven’t really done the breathing, there are only 3 variations and I’m not sure they felt right for me..Version: 23.0

Waste of timePaid for this app only to find that it worked for 3 days and then no more readings or hypnotherapy scripts could be accessed. Waste of money!.Version: 1.8.5

App keeps crashingI can’t really comment on whether this has improved my symptoms as I’m on week 3. What I can comment on is, every time I get I to the relaxed state, the app crashes (every day) and I have to restart the whole thing again and skip to as close to the place I was. Which kind of defeats the purpose of feeling relaxed. The first 2 weeks seemed to be fine and I was really enjoying it. But haven’t been able to get into the relaxed state again because of the crashing..Version: 1.3.6

Overpriced and misleadingI got charged without having the opportunity of choosing the best subscription for me, and without any reminder of the end of the trial period. There are always the same six tracks repeating and the articles are quite generic. For the amount they charge I would’ve expected more insightful and deeper resources. One of the ‘psychological’ tips they give is ‘if you have bad thoughts think about something else’. I think most people are aware of this already and the point is not distraction but how to divert to a different thought. It’s more about strategies than ‘think about something else’, which I’m sure plenty of people try doing, regardless of the issue at hand. I didn’t get any benefit from this program, just felt incredibly frustrated and think the amount charged is completely disproportionate to the service given..Version: 1.8.5

App only works when email used is your Apple ID emailI signed up for a trial account. I entered my credit card information and an email. Then I downloaded the app but when I try to do the daily session it wants me to subscribe and when I click already subscribed it takes me right back to the “Today “ screen and won’t let me use the program. Seems the app only works if the email you used to purchase the subscription is the same as your Apple ID. Contacted customer support and was told I had to sign in using my appleID only even though I had registered using another email address. This is such a simple thing to fix on the programmers end, but it seems like they aren’t willing to. I have requested a cancellation of my trial and a refund since I can’t use the program until I setup a different account with my Apple ID email..Version: 19.3

Not for those experienced in meditationI am a guided meditation and hypnotherapy enthusiast and found this app somewhat lacking. I never felt like I got into a meditative state, and the visualizations felt a little silly. I found myself feeling more anxious bc the meditations were so long and, because I didn’t love them, I felt like I should have done my usual morning routine. This may be good if you’re completely new to guided meditations but just isn’t working for me. Customer service is prompt and thoughtful so I am happy about that..Version: 17.5

Plain annoyingI wish I could have made it through more sessions but the narrator is so annoying all I can do is lay there and wish for it to be over..Version: 19.4

Helpful program, overpriced subscription modelI have found the program pretty helpful with symptoms. However, it’s overpriced as a subscription and should be a one-time charge for lifetime access like most static programs are. The content all comes as a package so customer should be paying for the *content*, not for time subscribed. If I don’t use the all for a few weeks, I should not have to keep a subscription updated just so I can dive back in anytime or circle back to things I’ve already listened to. The argument that it’s cheaper than IRL hypnotherapy doesn’t hold water because a real person adapts and changes along with you - this program does not because it’s pre-determined. That’s fine and useful in a different way, but it should be purchasable as a full series NOT as a subscription..Version: 19.4

Enjoyed it until the app resetI was enjoying the program to week 4. Then the app reset me back to the start. Now I can’t get back to where I was.Version: 17.3

FrustratedApp was stuck on day 1 for 2 days. I sent a message into the help centre with no resolution. They told me they would manually unlock day too but never did. I signed up for a seven day trial before I started paying, thank goodness. I would be upset if it was stuck and I was paying money.... especially since it talks about consistency in day one LOL..Version: 1.8.5

Symptoms did not improveI have struggled with IBS symptoms for over 12 years. I have tried therapy, medication, yoga, meditation, every test the doctor can provide, etc. I’ve tried so many treatments with minimal relief, therefore when I came across an ad for Nerva, I knew I didn’t have much to lose and decided to give it a try. I completed the first session of the program and was excited about the hypnotherapy I had undergone, however, the excitement faded as I continued to experience discomfort, even during my sessions. I decided to purchase and complete the program to see if time and repetition would change anything. The app seemed to have good reviews and suggest that a wealth of info was included so I decided the price was worth it, especially if it worked. Unfortunately, the only thing that changed throughout the program was the amount of energy I had after each session. Although I did learn better breathing and relaxation techniques, my symptoms did not subside or decrease in any way. Most of the information provided was info that I had already read over and over online. This may work for some people, but even being a very receptive and open individual, desperate for relief, I did not find this approach to be of any real benefit..Version: 1.5.5

Interesting but ......after the fourth day of the free trial, I realised I was feeling worse not better. So I stopped, since I didn't want to keep getting worse. I bumped up the rating from one star to two, because it certainly is an interesting approach and evidently works for some though not for me. Not sure a paid smartphone app is the safest way to try it out, considering what's at stake for the purchaser. Response to developer: Yes four days may be too short a trial, but I suspect not many people are going to pay down £50 on the off-chance that the app will stop making them feel worse and make them feel better. So I suspect that delivering the therapy through a high-priced app means that only those who feel better during the free trial are likely to continue. Regarding the studies you mention: I would be interested to read them. Can you respond here, giving the authors/titles? As others may also be interested in looking the studies up (using a search engine). Thanks..Version: 1.8.5

Terrible customer serviceI had expressed that Nerva really did not work for me and their customer service unfortunately refused to honor the refund because I had contacted them 10 days too late, despite being on a year subscription as well as letting them know that they could charge for the 40 days but refund me the rest. I haven’t been using the app since and most likely will not be using the app for the rest of the year since it’s really not working for me. A waste of money for sure, the app might be good and work for some people. I also suffer from ADHD which makes me quite forgetful so I did forget about writing them before the 30 days deadline :(.Version: 15.2

Cautiously optimisticI admit, I was skeptical. But reading about the studies with Monash university and experiencing the hypnotherapy, I am feeling these sessions and look forward to them. I am cautiously optimistic that this could help. It would be nice if we could access the articles again like we can access the hypnotherapy sessions. I listen to them 1-3 times daily. So calming..Version: 19.4

Do NOT give these people your credit card number.Guess why I can’t buy my cat’s medication this week? These people kept my credit card number & used it to take money out of my bank account 9 months after the “Nerva” program already ended. I used to use this app. I felt like I really trusted the people who made it. Until today, when I found out that the creators of this app which I USED TO use charged me $150 to “renew a subscription” and let me remind you that this is a SIX WEEK PROGRAM. That means that they took my credit card number & stole money from me literally 9 months after the whole program/subscription ended. This is after I already payed them for a YEAR. it’s been deleted from my phone for who knows how long. I have moved on. Suddenly I am reminded of it’s existence when my credit card gets rejected, I check my account & see that this company I have no relationship with any longer stole $150 of my money. How? For what?! Who knows. For them? Fancy dinners i guess. You know who you took the money from? My little kitty, I was buying her medication when I found out about this. I am so scared right now. I guess I’ll see what happens but I have so little hope in this world at the moment. No one is honest any more. No one cares. And this little girl is going to suffer because another greedy person decided they were more important..Version: 22.1

CostI really wish the cost of the subscription was in the description. It’s disappointing to download the app and get my hopes up I might have a helpful option only to find I can’t afford it. I live on disability and $70 every 3 months is not doable. I realize every service can’t be free. But maybe a one time purchase for the app and then if I want to use the live chat then charge for that separately. I don’t know. I just know I can’t afford $70. Edit: I guess if I would’ve read the most critical reviews first I would’ve seen the cost. I’ll do that from now on. Edit #2: just letting the developer who replied know that the price is NOT in the info section in the App Store. Just that there is a 7-day and then auto renewal every 3 months. No actual price is ever given. And I don’t find it very convenient to have to leave the App Store and go to the website for the pricing info..Version: 17.5

RubbishFeel completely conned. It says you get a meditation every day for 6 weeks. In fact there are only 6 different meditations and these are just rotated. You only find this out after 6 days when it’s too late to cancel. Each session is only about 18 minutes long and quite a few minutes of this is the same on each one (breathing at start & coming back) app is basic, but their developers seem unable to even cope with this level of simplicity. I have to turn my phone off and back on before each daily session will load. It doesn’t work at all on my iPad, only iPhone. It’s not about cost, but value for money. I’d pay £100 if it was worth it. This is a con, as it isn’t clear what you are getting and that is wrong. A savvy person doing the free trail, would just record the sessions & cancel. An app at this cost should not have issues working either. I even asked about the number of meditations on the free trial and the question was avoided. I see why now! This is taking severe advantage of the sick and that is just plain wrong on levels. I’ve had cancer caused by an autoimmune disease and that’s why I wanted to work on my gut. I have other severe symptoms. I don’t like being taken advantage of in this situation. It’s about value for money, £50 is too much for 6 short sessions. Apparently it’s £50 every three months, when you get nothing new! Honestly appalled!.Version: 1.8.5

Nerva reviewThe app was recommended to me by my naturopath and it’s not bad. It has helped me keep calmer in the mornings, the speakers voice is very relaxing. I also like how all sessions are about only 15 minutes and it’s mapped out for you to easily do everyday without having to sift through what meditation you want to do. The cons to this app are, the stories are repeated… I find this kind of annoying considering you pay so much for the app, not a lot of work has gone into the creation of it when the stories are the same every week. I also find the price steep and not worth it. Why do they make you pay for 3 months when the program is only 6 weeks? In the end the app is good but not great and there’s better options for the price out there, this seems like kind of a money grab..Version: 19.4

Could be betterI appreciate the mind gut theory and I am open to change, but I am just providing some feedback I feel could make this better. The sessions are a very repetitive, the start and end is the same it’s only the middle that changes, yes I understand the theory that repetition is what helps stick, but it’s the same recording each time and that doesn’t motivate you to want to listen every night the same again and again. It would be better to have some different words from time to time. I wouldn’t say it’s really hypnotherapy as it lacks the white noise in the background that really helps you go deep, I find I don’t go deep enough. Thanks I’ll stick with it hopefully find some help..Version: 19.4

Relaxed but missing a bitI am finding that I am wonderfully relaxed by the part at the start. It reminds me of the Yoga Nidra that I practice. And then I started the visualisation of the beach. Next thing I knew i was imagining myself sleeping in one year from now. That happened in Session 2 as well. I feel lovely and relaxed and positive but feel as though I should return to it later to see what I missed. I tried sitting up today but I am so used to lying down for the yoga that it felt really unnatural and I decided to lie down. Maybe I will listen again later and sit up to see if I stay more conscious. I think this is helping. I slept better and although I woke a couple of times, I got back to sleep quickly. My mild symptoms yesterday improved last night and I have felt more energetic and positive this morning Thank you!.Version: 14.3

Does memorizing nearly every word of repeated scripts reduce efficacy?“IT WILL BE AS IF...YOU ARE IN A DREAM. In this dream...” After the free week trial I assumed that there would be a variety of sessions. I was wrong. The user is guided through the same four sessions, over and over and over, for 6 weeks. The only variety is the little text blurb. The sheer boredom of imagining myself in a pharmacy, on a veranda, on a swing, and looking at mountains made doing a session feel like a chore by a few weeks in, as well as caused my mind to wander during sessions. Think there is some really good cognitive behavioral training here, but ideally it would be less brutally dull to sit through day by day after a few weeks. Gotta be a hugely profitable app for the developers given that they recorded 4 sessions and wrote a bunch of short blurbs for almost $100 a pop - that’s a scalable business! “YOU’RE JUST GOING TO GET BETTAH...AND BETTAH...AND BETTAH...all of the time.”.Version: 1.8.5

FeedbackBrilliant for first course. Nothing new for renewal so not worth it. Get an app that adds content In response to developer- the concern was repetition for renewal. Only. 6 sessions with no changes is not worth it. I’d recommend the first year / course but without new content folk are better to just use a mindfulness app eg headspace calm.Version: 17.5
