4 stars relative to other Go appsI haven't got SmartGo Pro yet, but I'm thinking I probably will after working with this version. I've been playing Go for only a few weeks with anything like regularity -- and it's this program that seriously got me started with it. I've tried other tutorial-mode apps that just didn't seem to measure up. The Go intro that comes with this app is quite helpful, especially because it's interactive. That is, the app sets up sandboxed problem boards that you can respond to live, while you're still in the tutorial, and if you step back through your moves to try something different, the app will respond differently as well. That alone is a very nice touch. It's a much more effective way to learn than simply reading and looking at proposed or suggested moves. There's handicapping, which you'd expect, and you can set a custom board size in manual mode all the way down to 6x6 (ideal for Go toddlers such as myself). Given my level of skill -- essentially none right now -- I can't speak to the ease some say they have in making the AI mess up; however, since the game is supposed to match itself against your skills the more you play it, perhaps it's making these elementary mistakes initially, but will "learn" not to the more you play. In any case, I like this one a lot more than the other free/paid versions I've tried. I think it's worth the price, and I'm glad I found it..Version: 0

Fun GameI don't think I'll ever be very good at the game, but that doesn't make it any less fun. Smooth interface makes it easy to use..Version: 1.4

Best Go for iOSVery solid. Great tutorial. Only wish is to support turn-based play through Game Center..Version: 2.5.1

Atari ?Loving it so far, but where is Atari Go? Could have included it really as a quick phone game..Version: 1.4

Really good Igo appThe tutorial was perfect. I love how it gives you interactive examples. Learn by doing. The ai takes about 3-4 games to adjust to your skill level. My gf has already complained I don't give her enough attention anymore. :P.Version: 1.3.2

Pretty goodI’m just starting to pick up go. I’ve never played and don’t know anyone who does so this is a decent learning device. I was stuck on a four handicap for a while but then I got the go books app. Buy “the way of the moving horse”. I’ve read a few chapters and very quickly made it to level seven (3 handicap). Not as good as having a person to teach you and tell you their thought processes for winning but if you think about it you can figure it out..Version: 2.6.2

Great appTotally amazing interactive tutorial.Version: 2.5.1

Amazing! This is amazing? You can turn off the fact that the computer resigns and you can put it on manual so you can choose what size of board to play. I am a complete newbie to playing go, but I find myself loving this! The tutorial is pretty good, if a bit confusing. Thinking of upgrading to pro version it's so good :) ticks all the boxes!!!.Version: 1.4

GreatGreat game but a little pricey.Version: 1.4

Great AppGood go app for learning against an AI. The automatic handicap system is nice for measuring your progress..Version: 2.5.1

Great app!!Best to use along with Go Books and a problems app..Version: 2.5.1

Great app for learning the gameIt has helped me a lot.Version: 2.5.1

Excellent for play and learnI have't played go consistently for 30 years when I used to play every week and have looked for a computer/handheld version for a while to get back into it. In my opinion go is the best of all board games being deceptively simple yet brain-nummingly complex and challenging. This version is helping me to re-learn and re-perceive the strategies and I'm spending far too much time playing it!! One minor frustration is that if the system resigns and the game seems to be hanging in the balance, there's no way of learning why the resignation has been made. An excellent app. I will probably buy the pro version and get addicted to watching professional games too. Thanks guys!.Version: 0

Great for learningThis is a great app for learning and improving your game. I also recommend "Tsumego pro" (a tactics app) and "Pandanet go" (a great way to play against humans) once you understand the basics. This app will teach you the rules (the app follows all the rules... It doesn't cheat as stated by some reviewers) and it will teach you some basic tactics and strategy. Then you can practice and see how good you get at one of the most complex games ever..Version: 2.5.1

Smooth and polishedI'm a total Go beginner, so this may not apply to advanced players, but this app is really well done. It has a very nice tutorial to get you moving, and it automatically adjusts AI intelligence, handicap, and (eventually, haven't gotten there yet) board size depending on your level of play. It gradually improves the AI as my own play improves, which not only helps me learn against an opponent of reasonable strength, but also gives an impression that progress is being made as I move up through the ranks, which helps keep things interesting. The interface is nicely done and works well on the iPhone's small screen. Highly recommended. People talking about it being overpriced are insane. I'm sure they think nothing of spending twice the price on a mediocre lunch at a fast food joint, but won't spend three bucks for hours of deep strategic fun?.Version: 0

Good but some bizarre plays! For those new to go, particularly some who have reviewed this app it's worth considering what makes go such an amazing game, in my opinion the best board game. Played on a small board (9x9) you need to be able to think ahead and analyse as you would in chess. This is what computers are particularly good at. Consequently lazy humans like me struggle to beat this app on that board. But go to 19x19 (which the app lets you do manually) and the miracle of go unfolds. Even without doing the maths you will quickly see that there are an enormous number of possible paths for a game to progress along. In fact, so many that even a powerful computer cannot calculate them all. This is where human intuition and guile come in. Moves can have great significance later in the game which just can't be calculated when the stone is laid on the board. You may have to choose from several different options during the middle part of the game which are difficult to weigh against each other with any certainty. So with the app allowed 5 secs to think about each move I would always lose an even (no headstart) 9x9 game but almost always win at 19x19. That does bring me to the flaw in the app. At 19x19 it does make quite bizarre mistakes - missing obvious big plays and making inexplicable suicidal attacks. It also makes very strange opening moves (it doesn't seem to want to play in the corners even though that is so clearly the best place to start). Having said that I absolutely applaud Smartgo for doing so much to widen knowledge of this great game. I'm going to shell out for their pro app as it looks like a bargain. Use their go book app and tutorials to get some instruction on the game and you too will be grateful to them for opening your mind to a great and noble game..Version: 1.4

Great App for Go Beginners!I played Go some 30 years ago, and it was humbling to bounce around between levels 6 and 8 on the 9x9 board with this app. It inspired me buy a couple of beginner's Go books (after 30 years it seems I am a beginner again!). The AI isn't perfect -- sometimes it makes what seems like silly moves, sometimes I humble it into resigning -- but it often beats me by several points. The interface is good and there's a web site backing it up. The only problem I've had (other than my lack of skill) is getting the stone in the proper place. If I just jab my finger, it often ends up off by one, so I'm learning to use the magnify & place if I'm feeling jittery or hasty. Worth the $3, definitely. Otherwise -- programming, artwork, options -- I am impressed by this app..Version: 0

Great way to learnLoving the App. I love how the CPU gets harder/easier based on your skill level..Version: 2.6.1

Never cheat. Please read the rulesSome players claim that the AI cheated on them, I have been playing with SmartGo for a while and aside from losing all the time, I have never seen the AI cheats. When you captures stones you are allowed to put in impossible places, but I guess nobody read the rules and started to complain..Version: 2.5.1

GoodA decent app to learn the basics. Straightforward and has leveling AI..Version: 2.6.2

Powerful app for learning GoAs a total newcomer to Go, it took me a while to find the right board and handicap, but wow, what a great little app. Helping me to get to grips with this very clever game..Version: 2.6.2

Pretty good, annoyingly resigns earlyPretty good version of a computer go program. I'm rated around 12q but I've not been able to beat this program yet on a 9x9 board. A history feature would be useful to see how many times you've played, won, lost at what level. The program has an annoying feature in that it resigns very early on if it thinks it's lost. It would be nice too be able to turn this off. Otherwise great go program. Well worth the money..Version: 0

GreatThis is a good app if you just want to play for fun, but i only heard of it a while ago from Hikaru no Go Waya.Version: 1.4

Excellent game but it crashes at times…I have spent many enjoyable minutes playing this wonderful 4000 year old game. The GO board looks and gives the impression of a real wooden board. The pieces look like they were made from stone. I am sure that I will continue to play this game. No annoying commercials or pop ups trying to sell me a monthly membership. The only problem I find is that the app crashes in the middle of the game. Is this when the AI is losing ? :) The AI wins every time. It will be a long, long time before I become a GO master. I gave this app four stars because of the occasional crashes. Otherwise, an excellent app and I would definitely buy it again..Version: 2.6.2

A great way to learnWith a tutorial, problems, and a good AI to boot as well. The games can also be replayed with branching..Version: 2.3

Basic Go AppJust wanted to mention in here that SmartGo does support local pass and play multiplayer even though multiplayer isnt mentioned at all in the description. Other than that, works as advertised. Great Go app, no complaints..Version: 1.4

More content!!I really enjoy the simple and elegant design of this app, you’ve done well. The ai is lacking in strength, and not being able to play ai on 19x19 is a big disappointment. I may move on to another app and forget this one completely. The app is very easy to use! I hope to see more updates. It could easily go from zero to hero with some quality content added. Having a paid version is no excuse to keep major bugs and flaws in the free version..Version: 2.6.2

Awesm! This is a crazy wicked game especially now that i find u can play 2 player i thought it was just 1! I also love the problems i wish u had more.. could you make a game with just problems and call it the problems of life and death? Anyway awesome game keep up the good work and all u go lovers out there this is the game 4 u! ふじわら の さい (Fujiwara No Sai).Version: 1.3.2

Good app, can’t find a support featureI like the app - the AI seems good for a beginner like me, and the app itself is pretty minimal, which is great. I ran into one issue - I’ve turned the “mark next moves” feature off in game replay mode three times, but it keeps turning back on - but don’t know how to contact the app’s support line. I hope both of these issues can be addressed in app updates..Version: 2.6.2

Amazing, but..The app runs exceptionally well, and I've no problems with the technical side. It works on iphone 6 perfectly and fits the screen. The go AI is very good I do have one request. I wish there would be an in app purchase offer to unlock the smartgo kifu. So instead of paying a full £14.99, you'd only have to pay the remaining amount. As explained in the app description, this version is severely lacking for someone looking to train, as there are no go problems. Just a quick easy tutorial..Version: 2.5.1

Great appGreat tool to learn Go and read some books. The Smart Go Kifu version is much more complete: you can record your games, analyze them, read more books. It was a great investment for me since I use it for every games. Great for any players and any levels..Version: 2.5.1

Great TutorialsI felt utterly lost watching videos and reading instructions until I tried these tutorials, with various exercises for each concept that let you grasp the rules under various situations. As for the game, there's various levels that allow you to go as fast or slow as you desire, along with various board sizes. There's enough customization possibilities to keep you busy. A great tool!.Version: 2.5.1

Really good appI have wanted to learn this game for the longest time. This app has a smooth fluid interactive iBook-like tutorial and wonderful fair gameplay. My only issue is that the tutorial does not really explain how to win the game, but via the numerous in-game tools it is possible after a few gameplay experiments this is possible. Keep up the good work!.Version: 2.6

The best mobile Go game on any platformI bought the Pro version of this game after realizing that the free version was already the best Go game on iOS. Since then the price has come down $11, SmartGo Player is only $3 and it is worth every penny. Top marks, great developer, great game. This is the only game that has been on every one of my iOS devices from the ancient 3G up to today..Version: 2.4

SyncI enjoy playing the game on my iPad and iPhone. How nice if the game can be synchronized on both devices..Version: 2.6

Great Go for the priceFor what you're paying for, and if you're a beginner, this is a great app. It has a tutorial that will teach you all the basics of gameplay to get started and an intuitive interface that's easy to navigate. Everything you'll need as a first time player will be in this app, and you can always upgrade to the more expensive pro version once you feel you're ready. However, there are a few points keeping me from giving it a full five stars: - No difficulty settings for the AI. When you're first starting off the AI will seem unbeatable, and once you move past it you may be wishing for more challenge. A difficult slider would be a very welcome plus. - An extra tutorial section better explaining the scoring system would be helpful. As it is, beginners could easily be confused about scoring, or be wanting more information on how to play towards getting more territory. - The AI takes a decent while to decide what to do. It'd be nice if it were sped up a bit. - The advantages and disadvantages of playing black or white should be explained. Despite those small complaints, the app is a great start into the world of Go for anyone interested in learning how to play this great game. I look forward to trying the pro version in the future..Version: 1.4

Best GO app! This app is really well done, intuitive and polished. It has a challenging ai and very nice game replay features (branching, auto-play, scrubbing, ...). This app is just really good! I'm not personally a big fan of the leveling system against the ai, but it's optional. I feel like it's downgrading the player levels too quickly..Version: 2.5.1

Good time learning to playI'm really slow to pick up on Go but i love the game and SmartGo has been of more help than any tutorial. i simply keep playing, making moves not necessarily to win but to see the results, sometimes self-explanatory e.g. i didn't see a capture coming, or other times i need to back up a move and turn on the graph territory overlay before and after i drop a piece & SmartGo responds. i sometimes wish there were "opponent difficulty" settings for the "AI" but that's probably silly since you can (auto or manual) handicap. i learn a lot playing with a 5 stone handicap (i need 6 to compete hehe) then using hints for a follow-along example of how to win with a handicap i can't sustain yet. i play every day and learn and lose and win and laugh and punch my mobile in the face etc.. wonderful app..Version: 2.5.1
