Ascension: Deckbuilding Game for Negative User Reviews

Great game. Dreadful app. This is a bit of a protest vote. But, I love this game, but have almost completely stopped playing it. The new app is just horrible. It’s ugly, slow, and makes the game harder to play. I don’t know what they were thinking..Version: 1.14.2

Problem with in-game buysThe game is great. Love it. But I started playing it on my iphone and bought a couple of expansions, and when I opened it on my ipad those two expansions weren’t available to choose them to play, but to buy them (again). I’m using the same account on both iphone and ipad. Shouldn’t the in-game bought expansions be available on both devices???.Version: 2.2.1

Fix it pleaseThe game itself is amazing, but this app is plagued by a freezing glitch that appears far too often. Once your deck size gets too large (easy to do with all of the expansions), it will inevitably lock up and you will lose your progress. This would be a five star review without this glitch..Version: 2.1.2

Recent update/overhaul is awfulI have been playing Ascension since it came out, and have bought every expansion. For the past 6 or 7 years Ascension has been by far the #1 most played game on my phone -- AI games were perfect for long DMV waits. The game itself remains great. This recent update, however, has ruined the game for me and all my friends I play with. The animations are torturously slow (even on the 'fast' setting), the drop targets for dragging/releasing cards are smaller and worse, the cards are tinier and way more difficult to read, the performance of the app is noticeably worse, and information about the state of the game is much more difficult to glean. This is all not to mention the innumerable new bugs that have popped up -- I'm sure those will be fixed eventually, but the core issues here are the UI/UX redesign that is worse in every single way I can enumerate. I gave the new version a shot, I really tried; the tinier card and art detail started giving me an actual headache, in addition to having to spend extra arduous effort in the now-clunkier UI. All my weekly games with my friends have all abruptly stopped. This update has actually *taken away* my favorite iOS game from me..Version: 1.14.2

App is crashingLatest update with artwork and animation revisions has introduced a number of bugs and slowed down overall game play. This is even with fast animation turned on. Crashes every time I play now.Version: 1.14.1

Keeps crashing...The game is good, but the new version is annoying. It slowed down the game without adding any functionality whatsoever, and it now crashes every other match. If you are thinking of buying, better wait for the next version..Version: 2.1.2

Can’t Move TreasurePlaying RoV + DU + Promo 3. If I have a Wildcall Staff in play, and then play a Crystalline Monk to move a treasure from one affected card to another, the game freezes. Can this be fixed? I can’t resume the game, can only delete it..Version: 2.2.1

Broken since recent updatesGame hangs on white screen at startup..Version: 1.14.3

Totally wastes the space available on an iPad Pro 12.9 inchIt's a decent game, though very limited by single deck and all others cost money (single/basic deck is still fairly interesting though). Biggest issue is that often times when they update the game they REQUIRE you to download the game again, even if you do not care about anything in the update...like they never heard of backward compatibility or something. Worst thing is the layout on an iPad Pro 12.9 inch… Some of the controls block the view of the first few cards in your hand when you have several constructs… I can't understand why they couldn't lay out the screen a little better for the massive screen size available on the iPad Pro 12.9 inch!.Version: 2.1.2

Stopped workingCrashed at start of online game, until update. Now gets stuck on loading screen..Version: 1.14.2

Neither Broken Nor FixedI've tried various deck-building games but this Ascension app is the one that has sucked up hundreds of hours. As time has gone on a wide range of mechanics have been added through expansions, including some cards so overpowered as to be game-breaking, but whichever version you play is a lot of fun. The Dreamscape expansion broke the game when it was issued thanks to a card that drew all the Dreamscape cards. This was quickly patched, but the game is still now very unstable, with crashes happening in maybe half games. To be fair, Ascension always crashed, but previously it only happened in games with scores in the thousands and now it's very common..Version: 1.12.2

I just watched my favorite game get destroyedThis is the game I play every day. My favorite game on iPad. Now, thanks to this new update/developer... -Constructs cover over cards in your hand -I am no longer able to accept game invitations -Animation is glitchy and buggy To call this update a catastrophe would be an insult to catastrophes..Version: 1.14.1

What the hell happened?Let me just say firstly I love this game. I own year one and year 2 collectors editions and have absolutely no problem with the game itself My problem is with the app. Before Asmodee took it over it was a good app. Still had a few bugs when you made stupidly good combos with infinite loops and things like that but hey nothing’s perfect right? Since asmodee took it over it’s become buggy as hell. Games randomly crashing on me. None of the expansions available when I try playing while out of data or anywhere with a poor signal. Game refuses to even start in airplane mode I bought this app because it’s a game I love. Because it’s a game I can just sit and play relaxing in hospital waiting rooms. On public transport etc. I paid a lot of money for all the expansions except the latest one. And now it’s all for pretty much nothing Well done asmodee as usual you screwed the pooch.Version: 2.1.0

Loved the old version of the app but not this versionI have played this game for many years and usually purchase the new decks as soon as they come out. I have a close group of friends that I play games with and we have probably logged a few thousand games. Since the update to the app I have dreaded going into the game. My notifications in the corner of the app display no longer show up, the interface is clunky, if you do not stage the card to precisely the right spot is SLOWLY moves back to its original location even when the animation is on the highest speed. The outer menu that show all of your current games is horrible. It is far to large for the information that it displays. I really enjoyed this game and I wish you would consider taking out some of these “upgrades” so we can have the game we love back..Version: 1.14.2

Unplayable, deletedI got hit with the slowdown issue that others have spoken of, and the game has become unplayable. It started off with a little stuttering here and there, and slowly progressed to where the AI laying down a single card basically brought it to a screeching halt. I tried the various fixes and work arounds on the forums, but eventually nothing worked; even reinstalling the game and only using the base decks was barely helpful. My phone is, maybe, 8 months old, other games (that are far more complex graphically and otherwise) run perfectly fine, and I have plenty of space left. Some of the threads from past users suggest this has been going on for at least 2 years, so I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath for a fix. Also, before the slowdown demon got me, I noticed the shuffling was near nonexistent; you could pretty much predict what cards were coming next after a few turns. And the fanatic/event trophy spamming got a bit boring after awhile. I understand it’s part of the game, but it’s another RNG mess that detracts from overall strategies; one fanatic banish per turn is more than adequate, after that it’s just silly. I’m not interested in crushing someone because I got the right event with the right amount of combat points at the right time. Loses its appeal quickly..Version: 1.13.1

New design has ruined gameplayThis used to be my go to game when I needed a 10 minute diversion. While the rules and gameplay have not changed in the new version, the UI has been destroyed. The swipe-up to put cards into play is interfered by new iPhone 10 functionality of closing an app. The card destinations of the void and deck are too small and I am constantly having cards returning to the main pile. The action buttons that come up when double clicking a card are too thin and require precise clicking. And lastly, the game freezes sporadically and will either need time to accept another action or an app stop and re-open. The game is fundamentally sound, but the new design must be fixed..Version: 1.14.2

Crashing way too oftenThis is a great game. But lately the game is crashing a lot, at least 2 out of every 5 games. They need to fix this to make it a worthwhile purchase..Version: 2.2.0

Awful updateUsed to play this multiple times a day. Now it hardly loads, and when it does it looks and functions terribly. Can't see the value if card icons u less you open them, constructs block viewing cards in hands... Only good thing I can say is that there's an in game chat now, but I haven't used it much, as the game crashes!.Version: 1.14.1

UI screwed up after years of successI've been playing Ascension and it's expansions for years. It's one of my go to games, and easily rated 5 stars. The new user interface that just released is a *huge* step back. The cards are muddy, low contrast messes that are much harder to recognize at a glance. The text is much harder to read on them. They seem to have adjusted the drag targets too, since it's not as easy to play cards or fling them into the void or discard pile. I'm playing on the iPad after having regularly played on the iPhone. There's no excuse for my to be squinting to figure out what's on the board. I haven't encountered the crashes other reviewers have mentioned yet, but unless things improve rapidly, I can't see playing it much going forward, and that's a shame..Version: 1.14.1

Worst redesign ever!!!Update: I haven't played for days because the update disgusted me so much. Tried it again today, I am never gonna get used to this. I even got a headache from the absurdly bright colors. For at least 5 years I have plays this game daily, playing at least 5 games online simultaneously and I bought almost all the expansions. But now I am really done. There is no excuse for a game giving me a headache. I will keep the game on my iPad in the hope that the redesign will be rolled back or at least toned down considerably, but I'm not playing anymore or buying expansions until that happens. Why was the order of the militia and heavy infantry cards etc in my deck switched? Why doesn't it show the whole construct cards anymore? Why are the constructs covering the cards in my hand on my 9.7 inch screen??? Why the blindingly bright color at the top? Why doesn't it show 6 online games anymore but only 4 at a time? Why is everything so slow now? Was the old design so wrong that EVERYTHING had to be changed? I have been playing this game for 5 years at least, I think I will just delete it from my iPad. The end of an era..Version: 1.14.1

New version is bad (1.14)I have played thousand of games of this on mobile, I have every expansion, and it was my favorite mobile game (I own at least 20). The new update is much slower, harder to read, and harder to use. With the switch to Unity and a PC focus it’s obvious that the mobile experience wasn’t high priority. Games take twice as long to play or more, I can’t drag cards to play because they’re in the iPhone X swipe area, and I miss the new submit button all the time because it’s much thinner now. I’ve gone from playing daily to not at all and I’ve switched games. Normally I wouldn’t review a specific version, but with the switch to Unity, the PC focus, and Asmodee supposedly being up for sale I don’t have any confidence these issues will be fixed in a timely way or at all..Version: 1.14.2

Stumbled upon, meh.Stumbled upon this, paid for it, played the Tutorial and got excited. After winning the next 3 bouts it occurred to me that there's no reason for winning. There's no storyline, no rewards like money to buy cards, you just.. win.. and play again.. with this meh deck. I don't get it, there's no purpose in continuing to play. Expensive mistake buying this, has potential but hasn't gotten close to reaching it..Version: 1.2.2

Seems to be some bugs affecting some peopleI was very pleased to see Return of the Fallen available for IAP, but my excitement has been marred by some UI glitches that are crippling to swift play. I own an iPod touch (3rd Gen) and I'm getting some weird text glitches (akin to paint dripping down a wall for the tails of some letters), and very poor touch controls. The only areas of the screen that will respond to touch are the four corners, the very center and the hand area. This is just about enough to actually be able to play, but extremely tedious. For example to fight the Cultist, I have to double tap on the Mystic and try and scroll through the cards until the cultist is there and try and touch the edge of the 'defeat' button. The only cards that you can drag are from your hand to the in play area, nothing else will move except the Mystic. I have tried removing the app from my iPod, rebooting the iPod and reinstalling but it has not improved anything. Hopefully these bugs can be hotfixed so that I can get back to trying out the new cards, and give the 5 stars I know it deserves!.Version: 1.1

Love the game, not latest expansionFrequent player; hate new design/app. Animations are jumpy. Font size looks like it’s a senior citizens edition. There’s now a lot of needless glowing. App crashes randomly. Also not impressed that developers didn’t suspend this update after receiving so many bad reviews..Version: 1.14.2

What happened?I’ve been playing this game for about four years. Love it. Downloaded the update yesterday and now it crashes every second hand. Also I have no idea what’s happening as apparently I play all characters....I’ll play the tutorial when it stops crashing but what happened to the game I love? Update: tutorial didn’t help but have worked out how to deactivate the NPC in offline. Happy again, but miss the card pictures. They were much lovelier before..Version: 1.14.1

In app purchases mostly unavailable offlineI have really enjoyed this app over the years and have purchased almost all the expansions. The infamous expansion slowed it down a lot on my IPad 3, but it plays well on my newer 2018 IPad. Recently however, I noticed that the app no longer lets me select most of the in app purchases offline, which never happened in the past. The only ones I can select are the most recent expansion I had selected in a past game or the original expansion. When I am back online, I can select anything. This makes it much less useful to have on a long trip without an internet connection. Is this a bug or attempts at stronger verifications of purchases? Since I paid for the expansions, I would like to be able to play them at any time. I will have to consider whether I will waste any more money on expansions for this app..Version: 2.1.2

Raise the honor!!Please raise the amount of honor in multiplayer online instead of the standard 60 honor, you provide that option on a single phone but not online.Version: 2.2.0

Terrible since updateLatest update uses a new engine which has destroyed the game for me. Don’t bother..Version: 1.14.2

Playfield is awful on iPhone 11Buttons are cut off by the screen edges and the notch, hard to play unlike a rectangular screen. Update for iPhone 11 serious is needed to improve playability..Version: 2.2.1

Ruined by the upgradeLoved this game before the recent update. Had good distinctive artwork for the different cards, card values for the final scoring were easily readable and the play was quick with good use of being able to swipe cards to the destination. It just flowed really well. The upgrade... oh dear oh dear. Beautiful artwork, but too detailed for the iPhone. Hard to read card titles and scores not easily readable. Also, now have to drag cards to the exact drop zone whereas a swipe worked before. Gameplay now feels clunky and clumsy. Very disappointing. Previously it was 5 stars, but now I’ll probably delete it..Version: 1.14.1

Consists mostly of luck and spam. The ultimate goal of the game is to snowball your resource output and card intake as fast as possible. To do so takes little effort and a lot of luck to see if you can steal the better cards from the 'shared' card pool in the middle..Version: 1.6.1

Addictive but crashes too oftenI really like this app to the point of buying the 2 upgrades. However unfortunately since the 1.2.2 update, it frequently crashes and I would not recommend buying this app until this has been fixed..Version: 1.2.2

Multiplayer can’t increase honor points poolThis needless limitation really ruins multiplayer. This point has been brought up by many people for about 8 years, but it has been ignored..Version: 2.2.0

I’ve enjoyed Ascension for a long time, but the latest updates...It’s actually bad enough that I will most likely delete the app. Utter failure guys..Version: 1.14.1

App no longer worksOffline mode crashes right out of the main screen. I don't understand how a bug this bad could possibly ever get released. This game used to be great but it feels like a ripoff now, especially after buying all the expansions..Version: 1.13.1

Removed my previous purchase! They are thieves, bought expansions a while ago now I have to pay again to play with them..Version: 2.3.2

Needs to be fixedUsed to love this game. Got an iPhone XR and now trying to play exits the game accidentally all the time. I know this is Apple’s fault and not the game makers’, but it’s their responsibility to update the app with some kind of fix/work around. Until they do, my rating is one star..Version: 2.2.0

Such a sad declineI’ve been playing Ascension since the beginning, purchased every expansion, and have been a very active player up until about four months ago. They forced an account merge between Asmodee and Playdeck which led to me not being able to log in at all since. My initial contact was through the app interface and I got no response at all. I’ve since contacted support several times via email and kept getting the same response. “We’re sorry, and have forwarded your issue on to the team in charge”. I’ve started asking for a refund about two weeks ago and have been ghosted with no response since. Truly terrible support and very poor customer service. What happened Asmodee?! Guess I’m going to now have to resolve this through Apple..Version: 2.2.0

Recent update crashes a lot in offline mode on iPad 4 miniThis used to be one of my favourite games, but a recent update has made offline mode unplayable. I’ve been trying to finish a single game; for the first few dozen crashes and hangs, it was enough to restart the app from where I left off, but now it’s hit a crash it can’t get past and I literally can’t finish my game..Version: 1.14.2

Robbed of its legacyAs with many other reviews I’ve read here, I stared playing this game on release and I find myself coming back to it every week every day and I love the nostalgic feel it has to me as someone who’s played the game for around 5 years. That it until the latest update ... I came to find my favorite designs from chronicles of the godslayer butchered to this new stile that I’ve been seeing over the more recent packs that ultimately lack all the charm that got me involved with this game in the first place. I’ve downright refused the buy the latest expansions because I feel they don’t belong with the rest of Sabee’s beautiful artwork and feel from the earlier packs I’ve gotten to associate with “ascension” Please fix this and include an option to revert the to the old art we know and love. I feel like I’ve been robbed of an important part of what I’ve loved for so long. Thanks..Version: 2.0.1

Restore function doesn’t workI can’t now access the decks I bought. It’s a shame as it’s a good game..Version: 2.3.2

A Great Game Almost RuinedAscension is a fantastic game, and the iOS app has been one of my favourites. I have played it frequently, and I've purchased every expansion until now. The latest release (1.14.2) has fixed quite a lot of defects, and the game is fairly playable on iOS 10, although there problems with cards disappearing when moved. On iOS 9 it remains almost unusable. It refuses to run at all on one of our iOS 9 devices, and crashes frequently on the other. Still recommend that you avoid this app until a more stable version is released..Version: 1.14.2

Used to love this game...Hate the new update. Art has taken a huge step backwards. Time to find a new game....Version: 1.14.3

YuckLoved this app, now it’s all shiny and glitzy, beautiful cards from the early sets have been replaced by ‘new’ versions. Wish I hadn’t updated it. Why mess with a good thing?.Version: 1.13.1

Great implementation, weak gameThis is probably the best implementation of a card game on iPad I've seen - it runs smoothly, the cards look good and are easy to read, it's fast and intuitive to play. The online play has a very strange user interface and tends to break, though. But the real problem is the game of Ascension itself - look around for it on Boardgamegeek and you'll see similar things about the actual card version. Unlike most deck building games you don't get a free choice of what card to add to your deck at any given point, you have to choose from a random set. So it's nearly impossible to plan ahead. Bearing in mind that the hands you draw from your deck are also random, you can lose the whole game because you picked up all your Militia while there were no monsters in the centre row, and there's no way to prevent that. Also, the cards are a bit samey and lack variety somewhat. It's still a lot of fun if you want a fairly simple game with a good feeling of progression, but I really hope these developers pick up the license for Dominion or Thunderstone and do versions of those, because they would own everything..Version: 1.0.1

UnplayableLast update is unplayable on iPhone X. Dragging cards triggers closing the game. Such a shame, it used to be so good.Version: 1.14.2

RuinedA great game gets a new-company-makeover and is made worse. What a tedious surprise. It runs slower, the feel is "spongy", the screen is not as responsive, moves that you could take instinctively now require experience-dulling attention, there are bugs lurking all over the shop and I've had it crash for the first time ever. I do understand that no one sets out to purposely ruin good apps, but releasing this soggy turgid pudding is pretty reprehensible. The screenshots in the App Store are out of date so it's not even selling what you're buying. It all smacks of a 'don't really care', reputation-killing attitude that cannot fail to do Asmodee harm. That they've bought up a raft of excellent boardgame conversions over the past year, fills me with dread. Each expansion has been an insta-buy for me in the past, but until the base game is fixed/restored, there's simply no point in going any further with it. Gutted..Version: 1.14.2

Crashing.Keeps crashing. All the time..Version: 2.2.0

How do I face aiCan you please include an option to face ai..Version: 2.4.10

Good game...bad appThe AI goes so slow in this game. Can take minutes for the game to play its turn..Version: 1.13.1

New version very buggyThis is classic case of, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The previous version of the game was fine. At times when playing against the “phone” the time taken by the phone to play its turn was stupidly long, but other than that it was very good. Now, in the few days since the update, there are so many bugs it’s ridiculous: cards that disappear under your finger, the game suddenly freezing, and Mordant Widow basically crashing the game as you have no way, that I’ve found, of actually destroying your opponent’s construct. What was once a great distraction on a long commute to and from work is now driving me to distraction. Hopefully there will be a patch soon to fix the bugs. Oh, one more thing, the previous version was very light on battery usage, but now it chews though battery like a termite through wood. Note to developers - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it..Version: 1.14.2

Love the game hate the appI love this game and continue to get enjoyment out of playing regularly. That being said the app is very counter intuitive on iPhone - the layout means that half the time when dragging a card from my hand it switches to my main screen - and because every time you so much as wiggle the app it disconnects you from the server it means I have to reload the game all the time when trying to play - sometimes three or four times in a row in one turn. Add to this that when it’s the first card I try to play it forces me to sit through my opponent’s last turn EACH TIME IT RELOADS, and I get super frustrated and routinely consider deleting this app...it’s frankly only the money I’ve put into the game that keeps me from doing that. As well, often you can’t double click on constructs so I have to open the tab in order to activate one. And don’t get me started on trying to scroll through cards and having it accidentally play or discard something I didn’t want to. This was a 5 star app until they kept messing with it. If the game wasn’t as good as it is I would rate this a 2 or even 1 star because of how obnoxious it is..Version: 2.1.2

New update no goodThe new update is very difficult to read the cards, gets interfered with on iPhone X because of the home dash, and plays much slower than before. Often when ending turn it will pause for 10-20 secs and then ask to confirm end of turn. It could be good I’m sure but so many flaws. Every time I try to play an endurance card from the bottom it activates my home dash and tries to close the app. So annoying! I used to play the last version very frequently. I imagine I won’t invest my time into such a poorly designed app. Maybe it’s time to switch to Chess or Catan.Version: 1.14.1

Love the game, hate the limitationsI have the physical and digital copy and this game is amazing. This game has one huge issue, it chugs to a crawl making it more a battery drain and frustration while waiting for the computer to finish its moves..Version: 2.1.1

Great game, amateur art and UIAs a deck building game ascension is up there with the best of them and is certainly one of the quickest to learn. I like how this game plays and the developers have done a great job converting the card based gameplay to the iPad. The AI plays really well although it all happens so fast it's impossible to see what the AI is doing. To some people the artwork used in a card or board game doesn't matter all that match. I think such people are a minority. In my own opinion I think the artwork is pretty poor and some of the cards are downright ugly. This is made worse by the amateur UI used to wrap this game which is again poor and quite clunky. Even the title text of the cards are fuzzy and hard to read which means it isn't long before my eyes start to hurt playing this. All of this detracts from the enjoyment of playing this game for me. As an iPad app it lacks any sort of polish. Clearly just because you can design and develop a great card game doesn't mean you can also design a great iOS app. 3 stars is probably a little harsh but it's a great game spoiled by an amateur implementation..Version: 1.0.1

Latest version not playing for friendsWe have lots of multiplayer games going and a bunch of friends are getting white screen of death with sound and the game not working..Version: 1.14.1

New update disappointingJust tried the new updated and was disappointed. For me the issues is simply the new graphics and animation affect my enjoyment of game. I find the new graphics for the cards hard to see differences when playing on phone. Too dark and all the cards looks the same. Would have been nice to have the option to keep old graphics. The animation seems slower and clunky compared to previous version. I did not have a issue either crashing yet. Previous version I would have given 5. Played it every day. This version probably not..Version: 1.14.1

Locked out on an iPad 1 IOS 5.0.1After buying all the previous expansions I am now locked out of all my 20 current multiplayer games because The app says I have to update, but I cannot update because I do not have and cannot get iOS 6. Why can't I continue with my current games? You seemed to have jettisoned all players on older devices and bricked the multiplayer game for them. The revamp in early 2018 has turned this from a game with an almost perfect interface into a rather mediocre one. Still playable but nowhere near as enjoyable as it used to be..Version: 2.0.1

BrokenI loved the ascension app; i played it more than any other app on my iphone. now it is a laggy, broken mess and i am gutted that i cannot revert to the previous version. who makes these decisions ffs? Update Apr 2019: So now I can only play expansions online. If I’m offline, they all show as locked. Abyssmal..Version: 2.1.2

Game crashesWhile playing, there’s a particular card or sequence of cards that will instantly crash the game when drawn. This renders the game unplayable..Version: 2.2.0

One step forward, two steps back! The latest update is great with the new expansion and an updated graphical feel. However, the updated graphics wind up being more of a detriment. The animations are slower, the UI requires you to be much more precise in where you drag cards to play/activate them, the touch response seems to be diminished, and I’m constantly accidentally closing or swapping apps while trying to play. All this leads to one game taking as long as 3-4 did before the update! I’m playing on an iPhone X, so it’s not like I’m trying to use outdated hardware to play. All these little gripes are going to make me LESS likely to want to play and pick up the missing expansions. Hopefully this is resolved quickly..Version: 1.14.1

A decently fun game with a slew of issuesI’ve played Ascension since it was first released in a small batch, I’ve backed it, and I used to beta test. I’ve played too much of this game, and it’s always been something I’ve used to relax. The 2 star review is for this most recent update, and for issues I’ve seen persist throughout the updates. As of right now, the newest update is almost unplayable. Online games have problems matching, you cannot control how many players you want in a game, once you create an online game you cannot delete it, and for the love of Benalia PLEASE adjust aspect ratios to fit different sized screens like the iPhone X. I appreciate they’re trying to give the game a facelift, but how this got pushed with so many issues I cannot fathom..Version: 1.14.1

The bestIt is my first time to invest money in a game, because it’s really worth it!.Version: 2.2.0

Marred by mired AIThe card game Ascension is s pretty solid game. It has wonderful synergy between cards and a mechanic that is quick paced and has a good amount of strategic deck building. The gameplay drawback is its ridiculous randomness, particularly when you purchase expansions. At times these expansion sets are reminiscent of playing Chutes and Ladders or Candy Land since you can randomly gain free cards by the dozen. That said, if you are selective with which expansions you buy the game is better balanced. Check board game geek to see which ones are ideal. The real issue with this isn't the gameplay. It's the slowdown. If the AI gets certain cards, too many cards in hand, or too many cards interacting with each other on the table it grinds to a halt. I've sat and stared for a minute or two waiting for the computer to slog through placing a few cards on the table. In a game where turns last an average of 10 seconds this is truly unforgivable, especially on an iPhone 6. A game as streamlined as Ascension shouldn't consist of 20 minutes staring at nothing and 3 minutes playing. Give this one a pass until playdek does something about the terrible slowdown. One year later and the game runs just as slow. Still not worth the time it takes to get through a slogged game..Version: 1.13.1

The redesign ruined what was greatWas initially great but the redesign and layout are suboptimal. 1. The transition to a darker, purplish color scheme along with change in font and more 'fantastical' appearing artwork make this game a chore to play. All these design choices combine to create difficult to read the text, difficult to know what card is what. In the past, the contrast between the black star point, red damage, and white triangles were easy to differentiate. In this redesign, the color and shape contrast don't stand out enough, especially against the background. 2. Not updated to accommodate newer iphones - the notch, rounded screen colors make button and menu elements cut off. Additionally, the sheer act is dragging cards from your hand to the playfield is stymied by it's position near the ios drag to go Home bar..Version: 2.1.2

Purchases disappear and no supportOver the last four years, I have purchased every expansion for myself and another player. Recently, I got a new phone, and reached out when I could not pull up to the games that I have on going with other players. Imagine my surprise one on my old phone, the other player in the family had all of the decks, again on a phone that they did not use, and on my new phone, at least all the decks do not show, even on several gams I have been in for over a year. I reached out and received garbage directions that have not worked for over four attempts. I have made every attempt to reach out to Toby and their customer service who takes about a week to respond, since these are time sensitive games, those games have expired due to this company’s lack of critical customer support. All. Decks were purchased for two players, which is more expensive than purchasing the game. Support shouldn’t take a month for basic steps, and they know this is an issue, as evidently others have experienced, and reported the same. Waiting to exhale, but I do not expect customer care or product support..Version: 2.4.16

Buggy as hellThis used to be awesome. Since the last update it crashes all the time.Version: 1.14.4

Asmodee broke this game :(This game used to be great, but asmodee decided to mess with a good thing when they took over from Playdek. Issues now include floating cards that won’t disappear, inability to view your entire hand, cards covering important info... the list goes on..Version: 2.0.1

Great gameUpdate May 2018: Used to play this app every day and I have the physical game and had every expansion for the app but the new release is just terrible. I’ve decided to not even buy the latest expansion pack. Maybe I’ll take another look in a few months to see if they fixed the app. Sadly I expect this release will begin a death spiral that due to lack of revenue will cause even less investment. Original review: This game remains one of my favorites. The AI is pretty good although it gets a little slow when it has a lot of options. Although the quality is pretty good I hit a bug of one sort of another every few hundred games. Stupid things like if I have 100+ cards in my discard pile I can't destroy any after the first x number. Obviously if that's my only complaint it can't be all that bad..Version: 1.14.1

I am not a fan of the new lookI began playing Ascension in table top format when a friend brought it over and it was unlike anything I had played, so when I found out that there was a mobile version of it obviously I was thrilled. The version BEFORE the update was almost perfect. I had very few hiccups and the game ran pretty smoothly (unless the AI played many constructs at once). The update with the new look and play style is the reason this app receives a 3 star for me. The game obviously hasn’t changed but the controls and the smoothness that I enjoyed are gone. The app is glitchy, sliding finger controls are rough, and the overall update was a buzzkill for me. This game was perfect for killing time without using data and now I don’t have that anymore because of my frustrations with the updated look and feel. I love this game, don’t kill the app with a new look..Version: 1.14.4

Repetitive but funFun game although only a couple of strategies are really viable AND fun. The AI has a game-breaking flaw where it can take up to 10 seconds to make 1 move. This needs to be fixed ASAP..Version: 1.2.2

You killed itWhat did you do? - it is like sludge on iphoneX.Version: 1.14.1

Good but buggy and crappy AII played the table top version with some friends and then downloaded the app so I could play and get some strategies down. While I have learned some things the AI is horribly bad. It has zero strategy and only plays to acquire or defeat every card it possibly can. It doesn’t try to play to faction strengths and can’t utilize many cards appropriately. In addition I’ve had multiple games freeze or glitch out. Most of them will freeze up while reloading. My most recent game I had left open while doing other things. When I went back in the app loaded as if I had exited. The game loaded successfully but at least 4 turns prior to where I had been and unable to play any cards rendering the game useless. It’s still fun but really annoying when you get a good game going and then lose it..Version: 1.13.1

Great game, frustrating app...I’ve enjoyed this game and app for years. Unfortunately, the app has become more and more unstable over time. It is now routinely freezing and crashing on games that will not reload (without crashing) on restart. It’s had a big issue for a while where it will freeze when you try to end your turn which can be “fixed” by quitting the app and then reloading the game (but is annoying and takes time). Also, it’s been more challenging to perform certain actions since getting a iPhone XR since the swiping action to return to the home screen is often triggered when trying to play cards if you’re not especially careful. Hopefully there will be an update to help with stability..Version: 2.1.2

New update is buggyGame won't even open on my iPad anymore with new update. Just a blank white screen.Version: 1.14.1

Good game but crashes a lotIpad pro crashes a lot during play....Version: 1.14.4

Asmodee Update ruined the gameCannot play on either iPad or iPhone now that Asmodee did an update. Crashes immediately. Sucks as I had almost all the expansions..Version: 1.14.2

RuinedApp crashes outright on my 4th gen iPad. Used to be great but can’t play any more. You may be lucky on recent devices, but if not, Asmodee will be of no help to you..Version: 2.0.1

DisappointedI have a iPad gen3 and it keeps crashing when I try offline games. Sad as it used to work so well..Version: 1.13.1

AscensionIs it just me, or are others unable to get into the online game the last couple of days? It says invalid password, and then forget password brings me to a 503 error.Version: 2.2.0

Good game, prices different in app to those listed on store pageGood deckbuilding game. Shame prices advertised for in app dlc on the App Store page are significantly less than those you find in the app. That was disappointing and probably breaks some advertising law..Version: 2.4.16

WowThis used to be “the” game. I remember playing it on my ip4. It was well balanced and curated for the players and players only. Now it’s all about micro transactions. It’s way unbalanced. Game-crashing bugs every time I use it. It has plummeted down to something I am ashamed of having on my phone..Version: 1.14.4

After huge update game crashes after each moveAnd sometimes within each move in the multiplayer set up (offline mode).Version: 1.14.1

Very bad interfaceThe old interface was perfect. You could play a card while another animation was going, and the card-play trigger zones were appropriately sized. Now you have to wait for each animation to finish before you can do anything, and the the triggers/targets are so small that card-plays have to be needlessly precise. What used to be a smooth-flowing game is now very frustrating to play. I bought every expansion before the change. I don’t even play now, because the game feels so bad. Ascension iOS is ruined..Version: 2.2.0

Terrible updateI used to love this game but the new update is so terrible I stopped playing. Why can’t you offer us the choice of previous design!?.Version: 2.0.1

Was good but ruined at the momentIt was a great game but also ruined by the latest update. The speed setting fast was speedy which is very good for the old players but now it becomes sluggish. The void region, the casting card region and the used card region become smaller than they were. As a result, players have to put the card carefully. Otherwise the card will be returned automatically. This slows down the game a lot. The experience becomes worse. Plus there is a fatal bug that once the card “all seeing eye” is used, it won’t go back to where it should be but get stuck to a bizarre place. I have been playing this game for ages. It is possibly time to delete..Version: 1.14.2

Fix ascensionWhen I open the app it dose not load properly and I can not see the menu. Playdek, pls fix this problem so we can play this great game.Version: 1.14.2

Offline mode crashesThe new update crashes frequently and kicks you out of the game..Version: 1.14.1

Poorly set up multiplayerFantastic game however it’s impossible to do online play. When going to set up the game you require a Playdek account which it does not give you the option to create. Such a shame as I love this game..Version: 2.2.0

Not bad...The description above is a bit deceiving. As the current build stands you don't actually battle the 'fallen one' all you do is collect enough honour points to win a game and that's where it ends. There is no game progression (so why use the word 'chronicles' in the title?), no rpg elements, no card collecting (outside the confines of the battle - the developers are missing a touch here as the inter user trading potential could prove very lucrative) it is simply a one off card game that you rinse and repeat from scratch. I was expecting something more along the lines of Zynga's Warstorm card game. Without a demo version i had to pay in full to find out for myself. I probably would not have paid £2.99 if i knew what was inside the box. Credit is due though, the game as it stands is very solid and fun to play. It runs smoothly and without glitches (a rarity with new app store games). Personally I would like to see it bulked out with the common staple components of modern e-card games such as leaderboards, spells, a much bigger card portfolio, rpg elements (experience/stat boosts), in game currency facilitating rare card trading and missions/challenges.Version: 1.0.1

AscensionIt’s time to pay the ferryman! Get your act together and put out a bug fix for your latest release that crashes constantly by closing down on the latest apple ios. Otherwise you will lose loyal followers like myself who have been with you from the beginning. The clock is ticking!.Version: 2.1.0

Game is working againWell... the latest update has fixed the problem. I'm not sure that the new user interface is any better than before, but it's a pleasant change to a familiar game. I never got a response to my emails, but evidently the new management did care about all the complaints....Version: 1.14.4

Too difficult & data farmingToo difficult to set up. Makes you create an account. I have enough accounts I’m not creating another to give you data.Version: 2.2.0

Too Many BugsThe game is fun and when I started playing it worthy of 4-5 stars, but a while ago (year maybe?) they did a major update making the game more aesthetically pleasing. The update also brought a ton of bugs with it. Most of the expansions would crash or bug out whenever a certain set of circumstances arose; some have been fixed, some not. However, the most overriding “bug” is for a couple months now the game will randomly crash without warning, often not letting you back in for several minutes to hours. By all means play the free version of the game, but I’d recommend not spending money on any of the expansions or promo decks until this glitch is fixed. I’ll edit this review when it is..Version: 2.1.0

Crashes & Hangs with latest updateNot sure why the revamped version wasn’t tested more before release. It crashed multiple times and then now my game is stuck & crashes upon reload. Not playable at all..Version: 1.14.1

Crashes a lotReally enjoy the game but it crashes a ton! Especially when you’re in the middle of a good game, it freezes and kicks you out..Version: 2.1.2

Finally DeletedAfter the last update the game has a bug when I log in. Sometimes it does not recognize my password. Although, I'm entering the same password everytime. I had my password saved, but that caused again endless loop of an invalid user name/password error message appearing that couldn't be closed. Even when I closed the app and reopened the error message reappeared. After rebooting my phone I unchecked the save password indicator, and didn't have any log in problems for a while. Now, the app is acting up again, and will not accept the password I use to log in every time. In addition, noone I play with is getting notifications, so my games sit there inactive for hours or days after I take a move. Considering all of this, it isn't worth it to keep this app on my phone. It's unfortunate because I really enjoyed the game prior to the update. I'm just thankful I never purchased a bundle pack I was considering..Version: 2.2.0

Horrible new versionThis app used to be great but they really messed up the re-design with a really poor interface. The interface is extra terrible on iPhone X - it's not optimized for the display at ALL (wasted empty space) and it's too easy to accidentally swipe the multiasking bar when playing a card - doing so causes Ascension to immediately exit back to the menu, and out of your game (in multiplayer). It takes rare poor talent to turn something good into something so shoddy. Please try harder to optimize this game for iPhone X!.Version: 1.14.3

Excellent programmingAn amazing game. Programming has made this a true delight to play, with notifications and the ability to see the other player take their turn if they are online at the same time. Please add an in-game note of what sets are being played. Update: please help. The link process was confusing and now my entire friend list is empty except for one friend. I have contacted the friends I can and they are struggling to update. This has been a seamless port and an excellent gaming experience, but I am worried that this new road bump will lose a lot of players. Also if there was some way to see what expansion options were being used while in a game, that would be cool..Version: 2.2.0

Good game, but it doesn’t seem to be supported anymore. It is way behind of its physical version. Expansions are not added anymore, and updates are mainly about bug fixes..Version: 2.2.1

FrustratingCould be a great game. It's not as no opportunity to build a deck; cards are completely random so cannot plan ahead; monsters appear early in game so you build your deck for that then peter out so all is left are constructs which you can't afford as your deck is skewed. Also the AI is very difficult to beat as (dare I say it?) there does seem to be some bias when playing... Amazing how often it turns cards over in the centre that he can afford and needs.... Found it fun when learning to play it but once you want a greater challenge just becomes frustrating...... Poor..Version: 1.13.1

FrustratingAll of my purchased expansions are missing and the restore button does absolutely nothing..Version: 2.1.1

CrashingNot even starts..Version: 1.14.2

What happened?Normally, this would be a 5-star app. But the Asmodee version is horrible. Poor graphic user interface. Horrendous feedback lag every time you want to do something. This went from being a no-brainer "must get" app to an "avoid at all costs!" Especially if you're used to the smoothness of the original Playdek app. The Asmodee version is stable but the response time is still laggy compared to the silky smoothness of the original. And the UI is grotesque with the cards now going out of the screen area if you have more than 7 on a phone. It's a pity as I've logged in hundreds of hours on this app (the original Playdek version). EDIT: the Asmodee version has improved in terms of stability... but which genius there made the decision that an internet connection is mandatory to validate all DLC purchases? Only allows the core (free) game to be played despite me having purchased several add ons that can’t be played without the internet. Which is clever when I want to play the game on a flight..Version: 2.4.10

Cheating much?I love this game, don’t get me wrong, but the game has a tendency to cheat. Last game I played, they got a card from their dreamscape that can once a turn double the monster they killed’s honor points. It doubled 3 in the same turn. I’m no genius, but that’s well over the one per turn. That’s just one of many times I’ve caught the computer players cheating, and just glassing over it like no big deal. Another instance to prove I’m not just spouting garbage is when they have no power left but can somehow get one or two more cultists or finatics... is it just me or do all card games now a days have cheating ai? If it’s because players are good then, um, no, no excuse. I bought the expansions because the base game became too repetitive, and now I get cheating in the game. Way to sell those expansions. If I didn’t know better, I’d feel ripped off..Version: 1.13.1

Love the game but hate the new updateThe new update is slow and ugly. Previously the game ran smooth on fast and I enjoyed playing it but now it’s just unplayable. I’ve given it a few chances but I just can’t stand it now..Version: 2.1.0

Since last update it crashes all the time.Love it, but now it crashes all the time. I play to 120 points for my long bus rides..Version: 2.1.0

Update made my experience worse (again)Update: I have rethought my initial 2 star rating and have given this 1 star because the game says I have to update to play online and there i no update available in the store. They dont seem to care about UX, save your money or spend it playing any other board game TL;DR. Great game, bad experience relative to older versions. This use to be one of my favorite games to kill time either online or offline. Now it is frustrating to use. I own an iPhoneX and I cant swipe cards up into play without triggering the phone’s “Home” gesture. Did you test this update on a X? And!, when it goes into the background it immediately logs you out of the server and so you have to go thru the entire log-in and select game flow to get back to where you were!! Argh😤! It feels like target zones for dragging cards to Discard or Void have been made smaller. And when you release the card you want/defeated and you miss the target zone it lists lazily back to its original position. That speed should match the other animation speeds. I wish I could have the old version UI UX back. If my above concerns are addressed then I will change my review accordingly..Version: 2.1.0

Not a fan of the new UISooooo not a fan of the new UI! Downloaded the update and... what the hell?! OK, the buttons stand out, but they don’t match the graphics/style of the rest of the game. Which has all changed to look more cartoony. Now when I go to play my turns in my current games, the layout looks tacky and awful! What happened?! Who thought this would be a good thing? Who looked at this and thought, “yes, I think the game should look like this”, and signed off on this design. I wish I could roll back to a previous layout. 😳😤 If there is a way to decline game invites it’s really well hidden. so now I have a game invite from some random for a game I can’t play because I don’t have the expansions, and I can’t decline it. 😤 This new UI is ruining my love for a game I have played for over a year (you can see my original review from before below). Saw a review that questioned the point of this game/point of winning... The point is that the gameplay is fun. Well, it used to be anyway. The strategy and tactics are ever-changing. The point is bragging rights when you beat the pants off your friends, and the frustration when they beat you by *one* *frigging* *point*. Love it! Been playing for over a year and never get sick of it. Until now..Version: 1.14.1

Disappointing since updateWell, they fixed the white screen of death, but this app still crashes so often I can't play live games anymore and I am questioning whether asynchronous play is worth it either. This was my favourite game, I bought lots of the expansions, but now I play Star Realms. 😪.Version: 1.14.4

Last update over a year agoThe app seems to be abandoned. Don’t spend your money on it..Version: 1.13.1

Broken with updateGiven up on this card game. Great way to reduce interest and I expect developer’s revenue.Version: 1.14.2

Latest update has ruined my favourite gameWhere do I start? Ascension is (or was) one of may favourite games. I’ve played daily for years but the latest update is testing my love for the game. 1) new card art - I can live with this, even though I now have to relearn what each card does as they are so different! Can’t we have an option to choose which card art we have? I’d prefer to have the style that matches my actual card game 2) the new app is really buggy! It freezes, constructs don’t seem to sit where the should (I had on randomly floating in the middle that I couldn’t move/select after having to discard). The constructs/card selection are too close to the bottom of the screen meaning I am often accidentally closing the app when selecting cards.... Need I go on? I’m running on iPhone X so no excuses based on hardware. Please fix this mess created by the update.Version: 1.14.1

New version disappointingMuch preferred the old version. New version is slower (both in both CPU consumption and in playing speed). There are lots of flashy animations that take up play time. Card graphics are emphasized rather than card text. More precision is required when dragging cards around the table. The only new feature I appreciate is the in game chat.Version: 1.14.2

Used to be my favourite game in the App Store. This was a great game. It was snappy, quick and fun to play. They've introduced new card animations and now it feels 'spongy' (for want of a better word) and laggy. This game was so much better before the new company took it over. I'm hoping the next update will remove those horrible card animations that slows down play and ruins the fun. Wish I could undo pressing that update button..Version: 2.1.2

Wait until they fix itWhat used to be my favourite, perennial game that I played for years... I now no longer play. They issued a new update which (a) is ugly; (b) crashes frequently and (c) has a AI that takes FOREVER to take turns. What used to be my main addiction is now something that I never use..Version: 2.0.1

Ruined gameClassic example of a game that needed only tweaks, ruined by an “improved” UI overhaul. Battery drain, UI that does not conform to latest iOS standards, and just outright poor responsiveness to gestures, this game is an embarrassment. Very sad that it has come to this - developers just don’t seem to care :(.Version: 2.1.1

BrokenUpdated to 1.14.1 and the app no longer works. New update has come out since then which still hasn't solved the problem..Version: 1.14.2

So slow! This used to be one of my favorite games to play on my iPad or iPhone. However, it has gotten to the point recently where the AI apparently can’t keep up with the card pool. This leads to the AI spending several minutes playing each one of its turns. Given that the AI can play practically instant turns on every other one of my apps, it makes Ascension not worth waiting for. It’s so bad that it affects my game strategy, as I know that I have to buy certain cards or they will cause the AI to hang up on every one of its turns. If this problem could be fixed, this would be a great game, but I have seen no reason to believe that the developers will fix it. Thus, the game is decidedly mediocre..Version: 2.4.6

Great game gets goonedAwful. Just awful. Played this game daily & then this new version comes along & ruins everything. I’m out. Do not download or give them a cent..Version: 1.14.1

Recent UI update destroyed what was a fantastic gameRecently the entire UI was updated. This update was unneeded, unwanted and ultimately a horrible idea. The game went from being a favourite to being an annoyance to play. I’m not sure what they were thinking..Version: 1.14.1

Almost unplayable on iPhone X or 11.This was an amazing game on my iPhone 8 and previous models, but with how Apple has new phones accessing the home screen with the removal of the home button (a swipe from the bottom), this game has become virtually unplayable. The problem is 2 major design problems: fist of you even flick the bottom of the screen the game kicks you out, and second all of your cards you’ll play are located at the bottom of the screen making any move you make dangerously close to hitting this part of the screen. The worst part is that not only does even the tiniest slide from the bottom kick you out of the game, but Ascension completely logs you out, requiring you to first log in, then find your game, then take the turn you intended to 30 seconds earlier. Can someone from the development side please play the game for 30 seconds on a X or 11 and see how miserable of an experience this is?.Version: 2.2.0
