Spirit Island for Negative User Reviews

Great implementation with one major flawCurrently I have nearly 10 plays with this app and I think it’s great. Having the program run the AI is excellent and it’s really replayable… However, I was shocked to find out that the game doesn’t recognize your purchase if you play offline. Considering the price point of the game, that’s unacceptable..Version: 1.5.4

Tutorial BugI can’t complete tutorial because of bug. The latest version has a bug where it says to press highlighted city, but there are none. Please fix so I can learn to play the game..Version: 1.5.2

No to the expansionLove the game! Decided to download the expansion. Absolutely despise spirit and claw. I want to remove it from my account..Version: 1.5.4

Ridiculous Asking Price! Can’t believe the developer has released this game the way they have?! The prices you are asking are ludicrous, hardly anyone is going to get this App, so online games with strangers are likely to be non-existent, it’s a wasted endeavour for almost all involved! The board game itself has really really good reviews, rated at 8.36 out of a possible 10 on Board Game Geek. You are not owning a copy of this game if you pay for this App, and maintenance for upkeep of the game could be abandoned at any given time. In my opinion this game should be about £5, and the expansion maybe £3..Version: 1.3.1

Don’t support these practicesThis is a great board game done extremely poorly. No multi, obviously as is Handelabra tradition, but also a very clunky and barebones presentation for a beautiful game. There is nothing here that is deserving of the outrageous pricing. Don’t support these bad developers and maybe someone else can make a better (or even good) Spirit Island game..Version: 1.2

Far too expensiveAsking price is to much. App deleted !.Version: 1.4.3

LackingWell designed app and prices are fair. Tutorial doesn’t actually teach the game well and so without a quick flick in to the rule book you just end up losing games with no idea why. Not fun or well thought out.Version: 1.4.1

Excellent tabletop game; digital implementation is……sorry but the digital implementation shows it’s still in development. As an experienced SI tabletop player, your cards ARE the game. You need to be able to see all your cards at once, and zoom in to see their elements/abilities, and how their synergies interlock. The map is just the puzzle; the cards are my tools - it’s where the decisions and actions are. If this can be corrected, and asymmetric multiplayer added I will be back to boost my rating. If you’re an experienced SI player, you may be frustrated. If you’ve never played Spirit Island, this app is a great way to learn the game. It’s a top 10 game for a reason!.Version: 1.4.6

Mostly great, bad multiplayer bugI really like the app for solo play, and it’s a great adaptation of the original game. But I ran into a nasty issue when I was playing online with some friends. If your device goes to sleep (I accidentally clicked the power button on my iPad) then it boots you from the game with no way to rejoin. It ruined the game we had going :/.Version: 1.5.4

Insanely expensiveNice app, a good tutorial despite some other reviews. Can’t finish a game without buying this for $20. Sorry but not worth it. Poor value..Version: 1.4.3

Honestly fantasticFantastic app, great for learning the flow of SI for beginners, and naturally a ton of fun for experienced players. Stars lost for the obvious reasons: 1. No multiplayer. Not *too* bad, but does kinda knock the cooperative nature of the game. 2. No Jagged Earth DLC, which has far too much content to be missing out on. :( This could easily be a top-rated phone app..Version: 1.4.3

Way too expensiveWhilst you can play the tutorial game for free, the main game has some free turns but half way in its 19.99 to continue!.Version: 1.2

Offline purchaseDoes it recognize purchases offline to be able to play when not connected at all ? Does that issue has been solved? If it is I will buy it full, otherwise no..Version: 1.5.4

Learn the game through tutorialDelete after and buy the real game if you’re interested. $$.Version: 1.4.6

Extremely unfriendly to new playersWith a complex game, it is hard to make an experience which welcomes new players, but even though the game might have been fun, I ended up deleting the app before playing because of how unengaging the tutorial was. It's something a lot of developers don't think of as a big problem, but with a game like this, it shows. There are lots of ways more effort could have been put into teaching the game. If you haven't played the game already, I wouldn't recommend it..Version: 1.4.3

3 bugs in 3 games. Poor testingSo by game three I’ve identified three bugs. The defend 3 special ability for Vital Strength of the earth doesn’t work. It let damage through creating blight and losing the spirit token. Yes it was a sacred site. The 3 shield was showing and the city plus explorer should have done 4 - 1 damage for 1 total. The event wasn’t relevant. All Enveloping for Rampant green had a similar problem. A town plus explorer got through the two defense to trigger blight and token loss. Also, when declining to use choke for Rampant green it proceeded to ignore the disease token which should have prevented the build. It took me 20 minutes to find 3 bugs which make the affected spirits significantly weaker and essentially unplayable. I didn’t pay $20 to do your troubleshooting for you. I can’t imagine how many more bugs are waiting. Just found another, an explorer plus city failed to build anything (should build a town) and no affects were active to prevent that (scenarios, events or powers).Version: 1.3.2

Bad appThey trick you into downloading the game and then you have to pay to play. Lame mechanics..Version: 1.5.4

Expensive and annoyingThis game is at least twice as expensive as others. It takes 30 seconds for the opening menu to be completely labeled, so unless one memorizes the symbols and what they mean, one has to wait to use the game. Evidently others find this annoying because they have an FAQ about it: “The Main Menu is designed as part of the story of the game; the Island has always been there, before colonizers arrived to give their names to things. You can use the buttons on the main menu immediately, so as you attune yourself to the ways of the Island, you can jump right into the one you’re looking for. We also provide an accessibility option to disable all animations, including the main menu animation.” I’m sorry, but sitting through a lame 30 seconds animation everything you launch the app does not make your interface part of the story. It is just simply annoying..Version: 1.4.6

Gameplay great but Wi-Fi challengedI think the gameplay is great but I subscribed so that I could play the game on a flight without Wi-Fi and it doesn’t appear that you can play the full game without Wi-Fi which is complete nonsense. I could be wrong about the Wi-Fi thing but nobody could be bothered to answer me when I submitted the question through the support site..Version: 1.5.4

Too EXPENSIVE !!!!!£19.99 for full game ridiculous, and the expansion £9.99 same. They are just taking the ****.Version: 1.3.2

Game works great, if you have network access…Purchased this game via the subscription thinking I could kind of try it before I buy it. The tutorial is great, and overall the gameplay is awesome. My only complaint (and it’s a big one) is that you apparently have to be connected to a network (cell or WiFi) in order to access the content that I paid for. So DO NOT get the subscription if you plan to play on a plane or anywhere without cell coverage/WiFi Couldn’t even finish a game. I will likely cancel my subscription knowing this.Version: 1.4.3

Trash titleReally poor tutorial, just boring to play. But the poor tutorial coupled with game breaking bugs make gameplay unbearable, usually like Handelabra games so it’s surprising how poor Spirit Island is in terms of quality and gameplay..Version: 1.4.3

$17.99 ?!!!You can get about 8 other quality games for that!.Version: 1.4.1

Do not waste your time.On top of being overly expensive, ($20 doesn’t even unlock all content) it’s egregiously aggressive in pushing purchases, going so far as to limit the number of round turns one can play before abruptly being cut off and told to buy it..Version: 1.4.6

New update is trashThe app they have has been great aside from you couldn’t play online… the new update fixes that problem but it changes the layout of the game… you can no longer clearly see the growth phase abilities on your i phone or clearly see or read the cards your about to play with no way to zoom in on either of them. It basically makes the app unplayable…. Terrible update. Please fix so that I can play again.Version: 1.5.4

Cooperative solitaire?I was excited to see this great cooperative board game become an app. But having played the tutorial, I now see that it’s 1-4 Spirits, NOT 1-4 players. Hardly a cooperative game when it’s solo. It really needs the ability to play online with others..Version: 1.2

BruhNot complete trash, definitely not good at all. The fact that you can only use the 4 low complexity spirits is pretty bad. Also, 20$ only unlocks the full base game and promo 1, and Branch and Claw is another $10. Like bruh, that combined is as much as the actual branch and claw. $20 in of itself should unlock all expansions and promo packs for the game, including jagged earth(nowhere in sight). The gameplay is actually clunkier than the original, and the subscription is online only. Not worth buying anything for, just buy the main game. Not worth playing if you can bust out the real game. Just a poor attempt at Spirit Island, and hopefully someone else makes another attempt..Version: 1.4.6

5 stars except can’t play offlineSame as other folks’ comments: a great implementation of a great game… mucked up by the simple fact that you can’t consistently play offline even if you’ve purchased the game outright..Version: 1.6.2

Bruh momentYou have to pay to play many mobile games. It’s a good practice that allows developers to focus on the quality of the game, instead of plastering ads everywhere. Some games include free demos, where players can play the game a bit before playing. This is a great practice, as long as the developers tell the player beforehand that they’re playing a demo. You know what isn’t great? Waiting until players have finished a lengthy tutorial, and are 10 minutes into their first game, to tell the player they’ve been playing a demo the whole time, and must pay money to continue. That’s what Spirit Island does. Don’t play Spirit Island..Version: 1.4.6

Expensive & leaves a bad tasteAs a fan of the board game the app does seem rather well done however £20 feels like a lot to pay (especially when it is cheaper on steam). I also hated how the game throws you out the middle of a game saying you have to pay to continue. It should at least say before starting you only have ‘X’ turns to play..Version: 1.2
